I think we'll play well, much better than we did against Everton, and nab a 1-1 draw; which would be a 'triffic result.

Bent and Ben Arfa.

4-0 Villa. After Benteke's hat-trick, Bent will score the fourth fourth after beautiful interplay between Bannan and Ireland releases N'Zogbia, who amazingly beats his man and crosses for Bent to volley home at the back post with perfect technique.

I've got every league result prediction wrong so far this season, so I hope I'm wrong again!

Lambert said after the tranmere game that he hoped one or two of the injured players would be back for this game. I don't think he can be talking about gabby, albrighton or bent. Are vlaar, el ahmadi, delfouneso injured? I'd dread to think what might happen if the first two aren't playing! Is clark's suspension over now too?

Assuming we dont have more injuries, I'd go:

Guzan - Lowton vlaar baker lichaj - KEA delph - Ireland Holman - bent (weimann, CNZ, new fwd)

I think he may have been referring to Carruthers who's apparently been dealing with a knock on his ankle, and maybe he was hoping he could rush Gabby back for the game or something.

With their movement up fron then i think it is really important that we pair Baker with Ron - Clark is too slow and will cost us

PL has said that we will go to win and i believe him (unless he starts with Bent up top on his own again grrrrrrrrr)

Guzan (although he wont drop Given on his return "home")

Lichaj                      Ron                    Baker          Delph / Stevens

                                         Herd
KEH                                                                  Holman
                                        Ireland
                                        Weinmann

A Newcastle win. We have a lot to do to knit this team together. Newcastle like Everton are a reasonably settled team and should have too much for us.
If Nzog or Ireland if put into the side decide that they want to play, we should make it a tight game. Bent can't be as isolated as he has been up front.
3-0 to the home team.

I'm slightly optimistically going for a 1-1 as well.

I think we need to play Vlaar and Baker together and one of Holman, Ireland or N'Zogbia to have a good game, but if that happens I think a draw is achievable.

My point being that PL sounded really refreshing that he clearly said that players got picked on form - he made the point about Given not being guaranteed #1 spot and that is the reason why Guzan re signed. If he goes back picking players on rep rather than performance then i am sorry he is no better than TSM

And for the record i would drop Given also - but you just know he wont be

Don't we can afford to carry CNZ and his anti-tracking back attitude in this game - it left us wide open on that side against Everton and Ben Arfa will shred us to pieces if we give him that much space and time. He might do anyway, but we should at least try to double up on him.

I think we could get something but it will be a tough match.

The, cough, wise words of Lawrenson

Quote
Newcastle have been linked with Andy Carroll and you can never have enough strikers. They are being very cute because they know Carroll only really wants to go to Newcastle. Their idea of a deal for Carroll is not the same as Liverpool's idea of a deal.
If Villa are going to stay in this league they have to get the best out of Darren Bent. Paul Lambert has been trying to bring in striker Christian Benteke from Belgium. If they can bring someone in to help and take the pressure off Bent I think they'll be fine but if they don't they'll be in big trouble because defensively they're looking very fragile, including keeper Shay Given.
Villa are going to Newcastle, where they will get a thorough examination because United have good attacking players and have options in midfield and up front.
Prediction: 2-0

The ground is one of the most easy to get to from a city centre in the Premier League, take your pick depending on what sort of pub you like!
The "Great pubs, full of Villa" always used to be the ones near the train station, don't know if that's still true, haven't been since about 2001.

Agree on the team earlier but would go with Delph ahead of Nzogbia.

Dont think there is much between Lichaj and Lowton for the right back slot but Lambert will give Lowton more time to settle in

Would like to see Herd break forward from midfield more. He has a great leap on him and could add some scoring threat I feel. Too often there is only Bent to cross it in to.

Can't see why N'zogbia should get anywhere near the team, Matt so your better judgement should prevail!  I also think he'll start with a couple more of the new blokes - Benteke especially.

I don't think benteke and the guy from Crewe were signed in time to play. I think that needed to have happened by noon Friday

i've voted for the Draw, but i could make a case for all all 3 results being possible,
and have had a few quid on the win with betfair at 6/1 to good odds to turn down,  with Lamberts attitude to away games, it just needs to click and you never know

I've voted for a draw, more from blind optimism than belief.  Deep down I think we'll lose...I'm not expecting points on the board until southampton if I'm honest.

Nah, I think Given and N'Zogbia are out. He doesn't countenance cock-ups. I agree he'll persist with the 'Vlaarke' partnership.

Guzan

Lowton
Vlaar
Clark
Bennett

El Ahmadi
Delph

Holman
Ireland
Weimann

Bent

I would go with that with the exception of Baker for Clarke.

I don't think benteke and the guy from Crewe were signed in time to play. I think that needed to have happened by noon Friday

I agree n'zogbia doesn't deserve to start. The alternative is weimann I guess, although we could play one up.

Ah right, didn't know, thanks.

One up top with an extra man in midfield would be better than fielding Nzogbia.  We need to try and keep the ball as much as possible tomorrow and CNZ doesn't ever seem to do that.  If we are to play 2 strikers then as you say, step forward Mr Weimann.

If O'neill is allowed a free hand in the transfer market you can expect Sunderland to be bankrupt within 7 years (being generous it could be 3 or 4).

As for the game I can see us losing, but I hope we will see an improvement in the quality on the pitch, and some chances being created.

- I predict an unsustainable wage bill for Sunderland that comes back to haunt them once the great O'Neil gets fussy and moves on

- Happy with the window! The lack of proven Premier League quality is a concern but we have a wide range of young, 'hungry'
players who seem to genuinely want to play for the club (makes a nice change). Vlaar at CB and Karim El Ahmadi in holding midfielder have both looked very solid

- I can see why pundits would tip us to go down, we have a small, young squad. But once they start to gel together I'm sure the results will come and I fully trust Lambert to keep us well away from relegation

- I think Darren Bent's going to have a big season. We're relying on his goals big time but we know he has the ability.

- I think Charles N'Zogbia might have a dissapoint season. He's been very uninspiring since arriving, and we're all praying he decides to start playing like we know he can soon. Why not against his old club? ;)

- A realistic aim for Villa this season is to finish above 15 and show notable improvements in our approach to games since last season.

- I have a feeling Chelsea will win the league this season, they've made the best signings and have started very strongly.

- I think Chelsea, Man City, Spurs, and Man United will get Champions League football, with Everton and your lot getting 5th and 6th.

- Norwich, Southampton, and Reading are my candidates to go down. I'm not convinced there's much, if any, quality players worthy of the premier league in their squads.

- Quite excited to watch Eden Hazard, he's looked absolute class so far.

- The one thing to watch out for will be Bent. He might not get many chances but if the ball gets anywhere near him in the box he rarely fails.

- I'm very worried about Demba Ba and Cisse up front, as we've seen what they can do from multiple positions. That Vukic looked really good  in the Europa League against that Greek side as well - very creative and full of energy.

- I predict a 1-1 draw out of hope more than anything, but I wouldn't be surprised to see us take a bit of a hiding.

Sunderland : Whatever O'Neill builds, it will have feet of clay. They will be flavour of the moment for a while but you will have the last laugh. So will we.

Our transfer window : No quick fixes there, but genuine possibilities for the future. The complete opposite of what we have been used to. We may fall flat on our faces, but I like what has been done.

A few pundits are tipping you for the drop, is this fair: pundits are fickle, and don't seem to like us much right now. Not fair, but not unreasonable either.

Villa player to have a big season: Concrete Ronald. He'll be the one emerging from the tunnel chewing on a baby's arm.

Villa player to have a disappointing season: Such things are relative. I doubt NZogbia will be anything other than underwhelming.

realistic aim: keep out of the mire
Where have you strengthened to achieve this : got rid of McLeish

PL Champions: not us, couldn't give a monkeys
top 6:ditto
Relegated:ditto again

new Premier League players looking forward to seeing: Any and all of our new signings. Plus Bent (if he actually gets to touch the ball it will seem like a new signing)

danger men v. Newcastle: No idea, good performances are found where they come from right now.

Which Newcastle players are you worried about: Shearer. He's an ugly get.

Finally, what do you reckon the score will be: Could be anything really. You got 6 two years ago but could have been 2 down and out of it in the first 20 minutes. Last year we were nowhere near as good as 1-2.

Sunderland: they'll have more success than they've had in some years. This will be followed by the realisation that success for Sunderland amounts to not much more than consistently upper-top-half finishes, perhaps a league cup and not much more. O'Neill will leave, the next manager won't be able to do much with what's been left behind.

Our new recruits: Nobody really knows, but it'll be fun finding out. Or maybe it'll be horrible.

Relegation: it's more likely than top-six, but it's still an outside bet. Like when Newcastle went dow...oh.

Big season for Stephen Ireland.

Disappointing season for N'Zogbia. Again.

Realistically: mid-table oblivion.

Champions: Man City.

Top-six: The usuals plus Spurs, Newcastle, Everton or Liverpool

Relegated: Reading, Saints and one of Norwich, Wigan, QPR.

New players: Podolski will be interesting.

Our dangermen: El-Ahmadi, Bent if he wants to be.

Newcastle players: Tiote, Cisse, Mirandinha

Score: 2-2

Villa have failed to win their last 12 Premier League matches. If they fail to win in Tyneside they will set a new unwanted top-flight club record.

The Villans have not scored more than once in their last 10 league matches. It's their longest run without netting at least twice in a match since 1999.

Need to boss the midfield to stand a chance here so would probably play a five of

Holman, Delph, KEA, Herd, Warnock (yes Warnock).

Bent can't play up front so Wiemann starts.

Baker and Vlaar in central defence and drop Given to shake him up.

To be fair, I expect to lose regardless of selection/formation so would be chuffed with a McLeish-esque point today.

Shocking fact! We have been making these terrible statistics for a while now, they might get worse before they get better. I'm not confident about today but I'm feeling more confident over our future.

I would take a loss today even it shows improvement, fight and confidence returning to the team. We then have 2 weeks off for our new manager and new players to get to know each other more and work on everything.

2-1 defeat, Ron to score for us from a corner. Now that would be something.

We've signed a couple of decent youngsters, Bigirimana from Cov and Anita are both prospects, but overall it's a disappointing window. With regards to your window; I was expecting you to go after a few "names", but I think you've gone the right route; young and hungry.
I think you'll be in trouble this year. If Benteke doesn't pick up the goal-scoring mantle there's a lot of pressure on Bent.
I reckon Ireland could be important for you.
Given will not play much I fear
Villa: top of the bottom half of the table & you'll need to strengthen again in January. We should be aiming to again challenge for the top 7/8 spots. We've more depth in midfield, but we're still shockingly thin at the back and up front.
City will win it.
City-Man U-Chelsea-Arsenal-Spurs-Everton
Wigan-Norwich-Southampton
Carzola, Hazard, Ramirez
Our dangerman is the Hatem Bomb. I'm worried about Bent for you.
I'm not confident, going for a 1-1

Dave, N'Zogbia has been shocking for us - did Newcastle fans see a good player?
He was a good prospect, but his head was filled with his own hype, from his agents & some of our fans. He's the same as Hoilett, Moses, Pennant.
