Works well on my non-Apple smartphone. I like it - much cleaner than before. However this is probably due to the lack of adverts which I'm sure will change once the tinkering has stopped.

Im using Mozilla firefox and finding that this box doesn't seem to continue off the screen meaning that the text is not wrapping on to the next line.  Is anyone else experiencing this or is it just this borwser?

Weird..... when i type a sentence and it gets towards the end of the screen, rather than wrapping to the next line, it just continues and disappears off the screen so i cant see anything after and dont know if there are mistakes im making etc.  Like now, ive typed this and its  has disappeared off my screen after the word "CANT" so I have no idea what im typing and if it makes sense lol

Bit of an odd thing happens when you quote a post. Trying to edit it down so that only the relevant bits are kept, the reply window doesn't wrap. Using IE9.

And are you still on the non-secure version? Are Wikileaks about to pounce on us?

viewing from my laptop (win7/chrome) the frame for entering posts does not word wrap and scrolls right when I hit the right edge of the viewable section. It's as if it has lost its width property.

If I hit 'preview' the preview frame does wordwrap but appears offset and truncates the first 8 characters or so on the left hand side (throughout the post).

At 19:57 I refreshed this page. Everything at the top loaded, then the claret band (but no page of thread info) and the Heroes Links menu on the left, immediately.

Then at 20:03 the rest of the page loaded with the page numbers, title and posts.

This is on an iPad, but it's identical on a PC. The ipad is on wireless, the PC wired. I restarted the router just in case. All other websites are loading super fast.

Is it some funky BT issue that's taken exception to H&V? Or is there some sort of delay reading the DB? It looks as though it's not widespread or others would be whining like me :-)

Symptoms

When trying to view a website using Safari, you may see the alert message: "Could not open the page. Too many redirects occurred trying to open (website name)." This may occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page, which is then redirected to open the original page.
Resolution

This issue is typically caused by the website you're trying to view, not by Safari. Safari may be able to open the website at a later time, when the website's redirect problem has been corrected.

Occasionally, the issue might be caused by an interaction with Safari. The issue may also occur because redirect information has been retained beyond its useful life.  In some cases, resetting Safari may allow you to regain access to a website. To do that, follow these steps:

    Choose Safari > Reset Safari.
Only check "Remove all cookies" and "Empty the Cache."
    Click Reset.

If the issue persists, sending feedback to the affected website may help. You can also send feedback to Apple by choosing Safari > Report Bugs to Apple.

I think that's a good idea, Drummond. Having to scroll up to the top each time to go back to the list of threads is a bit awkward, so the ^ button being at the bottom right of a page would be a good move.

Also, I know it's come up before, but has there been any more consideration given to including a Tapatalk plugin?

Agree with the comments above.

One way round the issue is to use the Opera Mini browser in which you get to the top of the age with a flick gesture. It is also a lot faster than the android stock browser, on my low end phone anyway.

In the next few days l will be removing the current 'mobile' version as it is now a few years out of date. I will be installing the latest version shortly.

For those who have asked about Tapatalk, l have looked at it again, but l am still not keen as the software will allow Tapatalk to display adverts or links the extent of which l would have no control.

I can look at installing both versions, providing there are no conflicts in the running of the forum as a result.

I think a separate one for film and telly would be good. I reckon more people watch films/TV than play games, for instance.

Could include the general TV/film threads where people would be expected to avoid giving away massive plot twists, and specific threads (eg the Breaking Bad, Making a Murderer and Star Wars ones) where people can post what they like.

I use Linux Mint and in last weeks updates it gave me Firefox 52.0.
Now when I log into the site i get the following message 'This connection is not secure. Logins here could be compromised.'
When I click on Learn More I get this page......... https://support.mozilla.org/t5/Protect-your-privacy/Insecure-password-warning-in-Firefox/ta-p/27861
I don't use my password anywhere else, but is it possible for someone to hijack my details from here and then pretend to be me on other sites?
Title: Re: This Site
Post by: paul_e on March 20, 2017, 11:25:00 AM
The risks are fairly minimal, the warning is simply because you're logging in to a site that is served via http: instead of https:

The main risk from this is if you have someone on the same local network as you who interrupts the request and alters it before letting it get to you.  In a private broadband scenario, so long as you're connection isn't compromised, that's a fairly low risk.

There's a blog post from Mozilla about the reason for the change (it was actually in V51) - https://blog.mozilla.org/security/2017/01/20/communicating-the-dangers-of-non-secure-http/

I don't know if moving to https: is an option for the site but there would be a cost involved in getting the certificates for it.

Can create certs for free if required:

https://letsencrypt.org/ (https://letsencrypt.org/)

With Shell access can set them up up to auto renew, so minimal maintenance also.

Hi Martyn,

Noticed today that a "pop-up" appeared on the site. It's said about working online with a yes or no option. It seemed to appear when a page was left idle for a while.

Just thought you should know in case it was a problem.

I got the pop-up on the desktop by hovering over the address bar in Firefox (adblock enabled).

The 'Yes' button links to a shortened url : "bit.ly/2addmoney" or something like that. 'No' just closes the window.

I am experiencing similar.

If I press the "arrow up" button at the top left of the mobile site, it takes me up one level from thread to group, still on mobile site, if i press again I land up on the main site.  (i.e. if I press the button whilst in the "Bruce Out" thread, it takes me up a level to the "Heroes Discussion" page both in the mobile site. If I Press again it takes me to the main site www.heroesandvillains.info/forumv3/index.php#c3)

Also, I don't seem to be able to log in via the mobile site and have to go to the main site and then enter the mobile site from there.

It's happening on 2 phones, one running Android 7.1 the other running Android 8.1.

Hi Martin! I use the mobile skin on my phone. When navigating to the homepage www.heroesandvillains.info/ (http://www.heroesandvillains.info/) the site now reverts to the desktop version. If I click on the 'mobile' link at the bottom of the page (there are two links) I get Sherlock Street. Nothing happens. When I navigate off the homepage I get the mobile version back.

Yep me too. Also on Android 8.1

The software for the mobile version has been taken over by a new developer, l will install the latest version as soon as l can.

I will have to uninstall the current software and install new version as there is no upgrade option, and as there are a few other things l need to do on the site, l will do it late one evening when there are fewer users around.

The modification does not work with the mobile version.

I can confirm. Navigating up a level from a board e.g. http://www.heroesandvillains.info/forumv3/index.php?board=16.0 using the up button with the arrow takes you to http://www.heroesandvillains.info/forumv3/index.php#c8 where you get the full site, not the mobile version. Clicking on the 'mobile' link takes you to http://www.heroesandvillains.info/forumv3/action=forum but displays the Sherlock Street 404.

If you click on a link to a thread or topic from http://www.heroesandvillains.info/forumv3/index.php#c8 you go back into mobile version.

I've been setting the switches to off.

However, because I close down my browser when I'm not using it, I have to repeat the process every time I log in.

I see that there's a single switch for enabling all but no such switch for disabling all

I am not trying to be 'clever' the advert blocks have caused problems, as did the mobile version when l upgraded. I had to disable the 'front page' with 'Board News' on so everyone goes to the Forum page now. As for the blocks on the left l was experimenting between 'Board News' 'New Topics' and 'Recent Posts' to see which works better.
The 'Bury FC' is there because it was the top item in 'Off Topic' at that time.

I just get loads of ads and the home page so I have to search for any topic. I have a link to "little things that are so annoying" so I have to go that and then I can find the daily topics on there. Frankly I am getting a bit pissed off with it as this has been going on for some weeks now.

Whilst I can appreciate, and accept, the need for ads within the pages, I am now getting pop up ads along the bottom of the screen every time I open up a new page. Can only assume it is linked to, or as a result of, going down the ad route. Having to kill the pop ups every time I open a new page. Makes using H and V hard work, and a not particularly enjoyable experience.

As of yesterday my work laptop is now flagging the site as 'Malicious'.

The place I work at use McAfee SiteAdvisor Enterprise and it has started flagging the site as follows:

McAfee Content Category: Malicious Sites
McAfee Security Rating: Red

Has something changed?  I can still get to the site but it's a pain in the arse as every time a page loads the McAfee warning page appears and I have to click to continue.
Title: Re: This Site

I had something similar last night too.  It was flagged by McAfee also.  There was a trial period of McAfee when I bought this laptop almost a year ago but I downloaded Avast for free, yet from time to time McAfee flags sites asking 'are you sure you want to go there?'. I know they are safe sites so ignore it, I thought it was an anomaly of something I'd typically done wrong.  I've never had a problem with any anti-virus software as far as H&V is concerned before.

Similar for me. I keep getting a pop up and redirect about prizes from Sky whilst using Safari on iPhone (no issues whilst browsing on MacBook). The only way to get out of it is to close the browser. It only happens whilst using H&V. Very annoying.

I've cleared my browser history in iPhone settings and will advise if it happens again.

I use Firefox with UblockOrigin and Ghostery on my laptop and have no problem. No problem on Android, but I use an app which I wrote myself as a training exercise.

Just ran a simulation using Safari and can recreate the problem. You need a decent adblocker. A proper VPN will have this built in. Downloading and running Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware, both of which have free versions, is always worth doing.

I'm not getting ad problems but I am constantly redirected to a another URL when trying to access H&V with Safari on iphone.   The URL it's going to is myaccount@ee.co.uk.  I do have an account with EE as the phone is on their network.  But not sure why I get redirected there when trying to access this site.  It happens if I search for a H&V link on google or use my favourite link.  Sometimes I can access the mobile site, sometimes that also goes to My EE.  So I downloaded adblocker pro and it still redirected until I entered the actual URL to be blocked.  But now when I try to access H&V it says that the URL is blocked.  Maddenining.  Anyone got any ideas how to fix it?

I had to update the 'mobile' theme to the latest version, unfortunately the default colour was a bright blue! This has now been changed to Hex Colour #7f1734 (claret).

The 'mobile' theme does not have all the features of the main forum, l am working on the code to be able add an image while using the 'mobile' theme.

You should not see adverts if you have donated and use the GMTheme or use the Mobile Theme as they are only in the default HandVTheme.

Using Chrome on Android 9 the font sizes between different post in the same thread are a bit random, and the format isn't clear and a bit difficult to navigate.

On Firefox everything is much clearer and fonts are consistent.

Went to a different topic earlier this evening, as you do, and, woah!

Suddenly, I was confronted with a different layout in austere claret and white, posts stretching from one side of the screen to another...no sidebars... or Heroes and Viillains in fab artwork at the top...what is this sorcery...panic!

Then I found the button down right for a traditional view and, thank goodness, at a click, it all came back.

Perhaps I stumbled upon a minimalist version?

Not really. It just means that messages are not encrypted, which is not a problem in this case. If you are doing a financial transaction, then it is a big issue.

You can change your bookmark to the site to https from http to stop the alert, or use TOR or a https everywhere extension to your browser if you paranoid. I am not advocating against paranoia, by the way.

An annoying bug (for it surely cannot be a feature) that I am encountering in the new mobile version is when you tap on the arrow for the next page in a thread and the screen displays the last message at the bottom of the next page. Highly annoying because you miss all the previous messages and have to scroll back up (or use the go up button) if you want to know who was moaning about what.
Android 9.0 Pie with Chrome.

I get the same with mobile version with Android 9 and Chrome (along with somewhat random font sizes between posts).

It seems to go to the top of the next page if I use Firefox, but in Firefox all the buttons become unresponsive either immediately, or after a short period of use, so I can't advance a page or use any of the menus.

On the mobile version, when trying to navigate between topic menu boards, the 'up' button chucks me out to a 'full site' version of the H&V Articles home page, as does the 'home' button in the actions drop-down. It reverts back to the mobile version when I click on something. First world problems and all that, but a bit frustrating.
You can have a 'like' for the flash of claret in the mobile version actions, though!

Because the portal does not work fully with the theme when l get one thing working something else stops. I am trying to work on it live but l will probably need to turn the mobile theme off for a while to see.

Sorry to moan but this is driving me bonkers. Any likely time for when it may be fixed please?

When attempting to access the forum on mobile over the last day or two, the site goes 'dark', and it doesn't let you click on threads - anyone else having this issue? Doesn't affect other websites I use.

I frequently check the mobile version and have not encountered any problems other than the portal/navigation one mentioned above, which l am trying to resolve.

Quick question. If one's big fat fingers were to accidentally hit the 'report to moderator' rather than a spoiler reveal, would one still need to then hit 'submit' for such a report to be registered?

My brother- Border villan -  can't get H&V toload on either his iPhone or iPad.

I run Android based kit and gave had no issues.

Is there a problem with Apple compatability?

Seeing as I'm here, for a good while now when logging on to H&V both on my laptop and tablet, I'm getting an error message.  To access the site I simply click off and log straight back on with no problem.  Not a major problem but niggiling nontheless.  Any ideas anyone please?

Not sure if there is anything anyone can do but adverts for The S*n keep appearing in the banner at the top and bottom of the screen. I know it can't be a personalised ad as I would not go near a site associated with that particular 'media' outlet.

I can only get in through a VPN at the moment. First time I have been able to get access since Friday night, have had to try using my laptop. I have tried through phone (non wifi) and through wifi, and different access points (I have a different router in the office in the garden), none of which has worked. Now using a VPN which finally got me in, on a different browser.

Not been able to connect for a couple of days at home (via WiFi) - got on via 4g whilst out at lunchtime will try again later. Desperate to read Legions thoughts on Cam Archer.

Edit - home now. Still  cant get on via WiFi but fine when turned off and using 4g.

Send me your IP address and l will check the server.

If you are with BT, that is your problem, they have a habit of issuing blocks of IP's which contain 'toxic' addresses. This can happen when your router has re-booted or re-started, even whithout you knowing, e.g. during the night a brief power outage may not affect anthing else but may cause your router to re-boot/re-start.

This does not happen with mobile 4g which is why you can normally access sites without problems.

Looking on some Sky forums, it looks like a similar problem, seems to get resolved for a lot of users by turning off the router for a few minutes then back on again. Hopefully it will have picked up a better block of IP's.

What's the best url for the site ?

I type in www.heroesandvillains.info, which takes me to the home page. I then click on the forum link, which takes me to a 404 (EDIT - actually a 403)  page, I then click on a link to go back to the homepage, where I click on the forum link again to get here.

When you hover ove the tab for the forum it should show  https://www.heroesandvillains.info/forumv3/index.php  if it doesn't your system is probably using an older cookie.

To bypass the front page type in:

https://www.heroesandvillains.info/forumv3/index.php
or
https://www.heroesandvillains.info/forumv3/

both of those should take you direct to the forum

I couldn't get the site on either laptop or phone at all for about a week. Following a tip off from a friend I used data not wifi and could use the phone. Admin unblocked my ip on the server and I could then use wifi on my phone but still had the 404 error message on the laptop. Now don't ask me to explain why, I am beyond my pay grade here but turning on VPN solved the problem and both appliances are fine.

I've now got pop up adverts appearing on the mobile version on Android. It's only just started happening. How do i get rid please? They are sitting right at the bottom of the screen and just flashing away. It's highly irritating!

And they sometimes cover the dialogue box as I'm posting. I can close with a click but it pops straight back up when the screen refreshes or goes to a new page.

Martin, Eamonn (regular user of this site) hasn't been able to access it for weeks if not months from any device apparently. I've sent him direct links but he can't get in. He says he's cleared his cache and what not.

Any thoughts on what the problem might be? If I get an email address, could you contact him directly perhaps? Thank you!
