Title: Villa announce friendly against German side Werder Bremen
Post by: not3bad on July 03, 2012, 12:47:48 PM
PAUL Lambert’s German connections are already being put to good use with Aston Villa arranging a pre-season at Werder Bremen for Saturday, August 11.

Lambert, who won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund and returned to the country to complete his coaching badges, has organised the practice match against last season’s ninth-placed Bundesliga team.

Villa will travel to face Werder Bremen at the Weserstadion on Saturday, August 11, with kick off at 6pm local time.

Lambert’s claret and blues were scheduled to play a friendly at Molineux that day, but Wolves asked to cancel the game because of their Capital One Cup commitments.

The Championship club have arranged their home tie against Aldershot in the newly-named League Cup that afternoon.

Villa are not due to play any home friendlies this season because Villa Park is hosting the Community Shield between Premier League champions Manchester City and FA Cup winners Chelsea on Sunday, August 12.

A busy pre-season programme kicks off with a trip to Burton on Saturday, July 14 (3pm) and also includes friendlies at Peterborough on Wednesday, August 1 (7.45pm) and Nottingham Forest on Saturday, August 4 (3pm).

Villa will play three games during their US tour later this month, taking on Philadelphia Union on Wednesday, July 18, Chicago Fire on Saturday, July 21 anf Portland Timers on Tuesday, July 24, with each match starting at 7.30pm local time.

Friendlies can sometimes be made as part of a transfer deal. I wonder...?

I know there are thousands of rumours every year, and most of them are utter nonsense, but even taking that into account, I struggle to think of a rumour regarding us in the last five years that worried me more than the thought that:

1. McLeish would still be here.
2. He'd sign Karl Henry.

Maybe we've sold Gabby to Bremen?

Bremen is a decent city, and the ground is pretty smart too. I am in Bremen at least a few days each month due to having to visit head-office and I think you will find Bremen to be a rather interesting place. Home of Becks! Some great bars and restaurants and they are in the process of transforming the old docks into a "new modern facility" i.e; more restaurants, retail outlets and fancy apartments.

Only problem would be with flights. Them fuckers at Ryan Air swallowed up all the direct flights from Birmingham, East Mids and Luton and now you will only be able to fly direct from Stanstead.

No flights? Ryan Air are cocks! It always proper annoys me when we are just about to take off, and some annoying fuckwit says over the intercom "We thank you for choosing to fly with Ryan Air"... I didn't choose you, i had no choice you bastards because you swallowed up all of the competition!

I think my mate will be running a coach. Premier Entertainments, I presume most of you will know Goughy. He's already on the case.

Looks like Bremen Airport's runway is closed from 6th to 11th of August so no flights are going in or out.

Next nearest is probably Hamburg.

Due to the reconstruction of the runways at Bremen Airport no Germanwings flights will operate from or to Bremen from 6th to 11th August 2012.

I'm never, ever travelling with Ryanair having read Nile Rodgers' tweets about travelling with them yesterday.

Treat the British public as badly as you can get away with, if they keep coming, then they're stupid, but NOBODY disses a disco legend like that.

The stadium holds 43000 and it would be surprising if 25000 came. Last year there were 13000 for a friendly against Fulham.
The day of our game is Werder's "Fans' Day", so there will be a lot of families at the game.

Apparently the away fans sit in an upper tier, 50m away from the pitch, so the atmosphere there might not be great if the ground's half empty. There's also a standing terrace for away fans.

I went to the Hannover game a few years ago (the day after MON was appointed) and they just had a special window at the ticket office for Villa fans on the day. It was their "Fans' Day" too and they had a fan park with loads of beer and refreshment stalls - really good day and atmosphere both before and after the game. Hope I can get to Bremen for this one, Germany is the best country to visit as a football fan.

So any news on tickets for this game?

Will there be a pub / area where the Villa fans are planning to meet for a few biers before the match?

The German Villans have contacted Werder, who are waiting to hear from Villa whether they want to reserve the away end (or part of it). You'll certainly be able to get tickets on the day - it's just a question of whether you want to sit with the away fans.

The ticket office were unusually less than helpful in the first instance today - I asked for tickets to be sent to me by express mail but they stated this could not be done - I was told to phone the Werder ticket office if I wanted tickets - I just could not make the call centre lady understand my request - I need the tickets by Friday as I fly out to Holland on that day.
I decided to redial and got the same individual - this time I asked for her manager which she seemed reluctant to do - eventually I spoke with a manager who also stated she could not send the tickets other than first class despite me offering to pay the costs. When asked what I should do if the tickets do not show up she said I need to phone the ticket office and they will cancel the tickets and arrange with Werder for me to collect on the day - why didn`t they just say I could do that in the first place.
I also e-mailed Werder and got this response:
Hello Mr. VCTM,

yes, there will be a ticket box for guest supporters near the guest area (Westkurve).
The tickets will cost 15€ each.
The stadium is about 6 km away from the airport but we would advise you to go by bus & tram instead of car, because due to the supporters day (Tag der Fans) there is no parking space at the stadium.

On a serious note - i think the line up on sat must have the basis of what he intends to start with at WH the following week - unless a major injury or a well known name is bought i would think he must be close to knowing the team for the opening game

I totally agree with both posts. As for today, why people have to bring the war into things is ridiculous. They know nothing about it. When I watch programmes about those who fought in it, I regularly hear old servicemen showing respect to their old enemy. The muppets let the side down today.

Nice to see people from here today at the game, my first pre season match, our style of play has certainly changed since Norwich.
I didn't think the German bombers song was sang by the majority of people IMO. Most of us were a bit embarrassed to be honest although even the guys who were singing it weren't doing it maliciously, just as a misguided pxxxtake.
We have much to learn from the way they 'do' footy in Germany. It looks completely different to what we see in the UK. Lots of families, yet even more booze around than at home.

Before and after the game the Villa and Werder fans got on very well together and it was lovely waliking along the river to the ground with supporters of both teams. Alan Perrins from the Lions Club really put himself out for the German Villans and arranged for them to meet some of the players afterwards. The singing of "10 German Bombers" was insulting, embarrassing and very loud (Alan could hear it from the Werder directors' box), but on balance more good was done over the weekend than harm.
As for the game -  after Forest and Werder we need to learn to defend

The ten German bomber song was joined in by a large number of the supporters in the standing section. It is England fans  behaviour that I heard for the first time repeated in a Villa game in Europe. Shame on all who joined. I pointed out to a group of 3 who were bellowing out in front of me  that it was disrespectful to our hosts they dismissed it as "harmless fun".
On the other side I can't praise Werder fans enough.T They were great before and after the game and of course did a rendition of "Villa Villa" during the game. Lovely to see their friends and family oriented BBQ''s along the river bank.

Shame that this song was sung by Villa, I'd've hoped that we'd have avoided falling into that trap for English fans in Germany.

A few of my German mates actually quite enjoy the song (in that it celebrates the forces who liberated Germany from the Nazis), but it's all about context and a football game between a German and English side simply isn't an appropriate setting for what could easily be construed as baiting the opposition. Pleased to hear that more good than harm was done overall, though. It'd be nice to think Werder fans have a decent impression of our club on the whole. I certainly found them a very welcoming bunch when I was there a few years back, with plenty of Becks to lubricate some good-natured banter.

Unfortunately there are idiots at every club. I'm sure Werder have theirs. In England there are those that have no idea what the war was about or meant. They think it's a bit of fun to keep bringing it up against those that in all likelihood had nothing at all to do with it, and most of those that have links through their blood lines, are embarassed and ashamed by it. It's no different to being amongst England fans when despite having my England top on, some started to sing, I'd rather be a paki than a kraut. Lovely. People who were with me were mortified.

It's not all of them but it can seem that way. It's such a shame that we would rather sign that kind of song in the name of banter than just get behind our own lot. Because I doubt that our lads on the pitch, England or Villa, get motivated by songs against pakis and the war.

What was the attendance and any idea how many Villa were there?

I think it was 22,700 + and I'm guessing we had between 100 and 150 beers.  Could have been more.

Fixed.

Very good, but as it happens I wasn't feeling very well and didn't drink alcohol.  Others seem to make up for me though.

Just back after a week in Holland - took in the game and enjoyed meeting many "German" Villa fans in addition to several H&V ers.
I despair sometimes at our travelling support - they can be brilliant or downright embarassing - why sing about Small Heath when playing a frendly in Germany?
The Ten German Bombers song - what the heck? Those singing it around me, in the standing section, could barely stand and sing at the same time. They weren`t kids either. I just wish some people would stay at home sometimes.
As for the game - Given should not be first choice!
Bremen- a nice city which I will visit again in the future.
