Shame. Good servant to the club and hope he finds another job elsewhere if he wants one. Mr Tickle has to be given the chance to bring his own men in though, which is fair enough.

Thats a kick in the teeth, I hope every effort was made to accommodate him. His Next Gen teams were the highlight of many a year.

I wish him every success and I'm sure he will achieve it.

As sad as this is, the new manager needs to have a team around him that is totally sold on what he wants to do. At the end of the day he'll be judged on what he produces, and Lambert has to have every person at the club pulling in one direction. KMac has been a superb servant to the club, and the last few years have been quite turbulent and will have hurt him. Maybe he just no longer wants more change and feels he needs to move on to find a new challenge and some stability for himself and his family. I can only wish him the very best in everything he does.

Good luck to Kevin and thanks for everything he's done for the club.  17 years is a long time and he's earned the respect of the fans.  I hope this means that Karsa and Culverhouse are already sorted. Not as if it was ever a doubt.

Really gutted there wasn't a way we could acommadate him. He has been brilliant with the youth set up.
Maybe he feels it's time to move on.

I wish him all the best, he's been a credit to Aston Villa.

I hope this doesn't impact on our attractiveness to the most sought after young players, he would have been a big part of the pull.

All the best Kev. I just hope that we are able to continue the good work he's done with the academy.

The indications are that this was his choice, and in that kind of situation there's nothing the club can do. Maybe he wants to be a number 1 somewhere?
Title: Re: Kevin McDonald is to Leave Aston Villa.
Post by: ozzjim on June 09, 2012, 02:21:56 PM
I think the time is right. He was always too comfortable a solution if things were not right with the manager, and has been involved with the first team for a while now, without any real effect, and was part of TSM team last season, so has to share in the pain of that. His work with the reserves and youth has been brilliant, but then we have McAndrew, and maybe Sid going back to the youth set up could be a possibility if Bertie wants his own men around him. I would hope he brings a couple more as well as Culverhouse and Karsa if I am honest, unless Sid stays with the first team. I do think the time is right though, and I really hope if he wants the top job somewhere he makes a good fist of it. I fear he will be back in at youth level within 2-3 seasons though. A bit of a Paul Hart.

Very sorry to see him go, but it's probably a sign of Lambert bringing his own staff in, which can only be a good thing.

All the best, K-Mac, and thanks for 17 years of great service!

Sorry to see him leave but it was always on the cards.  Not many coaches survive as many changes of manager as MacDonald has, and while Houllier and McLeish were probably willing to put up with people who they didn't appoint, it may be that Lambert is a bit more ruthless.  Or it could be that Kevin just wants a fresh start elsewhere.  In any case, the very best of luck to him.

Long-time club servant MacDonald to leave Villa
09 Jun 2012 13:31

Kevin MacDonald has decided to bring to an end his long association with Aston Villa Football Club.

The former double-winning Liverpool midfield player became synonymous with the success of Villa's academy and reserves.

Since his arrival at Villa in 1995, he has overseen the development of such players as Gareth Barry, Gabby Agbonlahor, Marc Albrighton, Ciaran Clark, Barry Bannan, Andreas Weimann, Craig Gardner, Gary Gardner, Darius Vassell, Steven Davis, Liam Ridgewell, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Lee Hendrie, Jlloyd Samuel and Gary Cahill, to name a few.

As manager of Villa reserves, he secured a Premier Reserve League North title in 2003-04, and four Reserve League South titles in five years from the 2007-08 season and a national play-off triumph in 2008-09.

At the beginning of the 2010-11 season he stepped into the breach as caretaker manager of Villa before assuming a first-team coaching role alongside reserve team duties last season.

Chief Executive Paul Faulkner said: "As a club, we are immensely grateful for the contribution Kevin has made in more than 17 years at Villa.

"He has been an integral part of the success we have enjoyed at academy and reserve team level and, in assuming his caretaker responsibilities at the beginning of the 2010-11 season, he cemented his position as a man who will always command respect at this club.

"The whole of Aston Villa Football Club will wish Kevin well."

Kevin said: "I've had an incredible 17 years at Aston Villa, one of the biggest clubs in the country, and wish to thank all the staff and players I have worked with during my time at the club.

"I wish Aston Villa every success in the future."

It's a shame that he's gone. I personally thought he did well in the caretaker role considering he was thrown into it 5 days before the start of the season and the job he's done with the reserves has been outstanding. The best of luck to him.

A sincere thank you from me Kevin.  To survive seventeen years in this dog-eat-dog world of professional football is an achievement in itself and is a measure of the high capabilities that you have.  The respect shown on here to you is testament to that.  Wherever you go in football; may you find great success.

Didn't he apply for the Forest job last year too before McLaren got it (who himself wanted the Villa job only us message board fans put the board off apparently. There must have been a lot of us hoping for McLeish in that case...)?

The last two years must have been pretty strange for Kevin after years of diligently and successfully blooding young players for the first team. I can't see him managing, is he close to retirement age? He'll have gone through all the emotions that we have since MON left and after 17 years service with us he might, as suggested earlier, be jaded by it all.

Quite a few assuming Lambert has given him the elbow. TBH, is Kev applied for the job, as we're led to believe, and was unsuccessful then he probably thinks it's a good time to seek pastures new. Besides, having had a taste of the big time after MON left he probably wants to chance his arm at something bigger than baby sitting the kids, etc. All the best.

A shame to see him go and he's been a marvelous servant to the club.

I suspect this was always going to happen though after he was caretaker boss and didn't get the job (twice, even three times if he was interested this summer). Very hard to go back once you've had a taste of the big time. Perhaps now he wants to go and have a crack on his own somewhere - good luck to him.
