Title: King Carlos Day - Sunday 13th May
Post by: micsymmonds on May 10, 2012, 12:33:45 AM
Hey all,

I did think about putting this in the match thread, but we are trying to drum up as much interest as we can on this to give the big buy the send off he deserves.

Mat Kendrick, Jack Woodward from the media are backing it and there will be a mention of it in the Birmingham Mail over the next few days.

We have a lot of the youth and reserve team backing it too with Jack Grealish, Emre, Gary Gardner and more Re-Tweeting.

We have so far printed off 500 Carlos masks and will be handing them out to fans before the game. we are calling on all fans to come in curly wigs, spanish flags, print off Carlos masks themselves.

Would really appreciate everyones support on this, and you can follow @micsymmonds or @KingCarlosDay on twitter for more info on it and to have any questions answered.

I hope all of you going will come out and support and thank Carlos this way, and although most of us dont agree with him going, it will be nice for him to feel appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

I don't want to sound like a killjoy, but you make out like he has been some kind of Villa legend.  Ok he has always been complimentary about the club and fans but I can only remember about 10 really good games that he played for the club during his stay.  Is this all not a little OTT for an average player who did not sign a new contract?

Agree with everything Singapore says.  Martin Laursen and Olof Mellberg deserved this kind of accolade.  Carlos Cuellar does not.  He has been paid handsomely during his stay at the club, but is an average to good, journeyman footballer who ultimately failed to cut the mustard!

Over the top was my initial thoughts, but then as I thought about it why not enjoy it. You fans who go to the games regularly have not had a hardly anything to cheer or get excited by all season.
Carlos has been a great pro, he has played to his best ability and gives it his all. Always popular with the fans but never fancied by the management. He appreciates being at the Villa so why not give him a send off, he is a very likeable chap and why not try and enjoy the las Villa match of the season.

So what if it might be a bit OTT? It's the last match of the season, we're safe barring an event of cataclysmic proportions, the knuckledraggers are still in our shadow and it's been a shit season all round so go on, enjoy the moment and make the most of it!

Its got more to do with most fans thinking what a shower of shit the rest  of the defence is.

Reserve the right to call it off if he knocks in 17 own goals and we get relegated.

If Carlos had played more, he wouldn't be seen as the legend/hero that he's perceived by many.

Its a classic........... sorry here comes another Americanism............ "Backup Quarterback" situation. Many people always think that the bloke who isn't playing is always better than the bloke who is.

Me too, an extremely average footballer in my view, nice guy and all that granted, but hardly deserving of this kind of treatment. It shows how low we have sunk to be celebrating this sort of thing. Very small time in my opinion

Now that's a more creative suggestion.  Funeral attire is definitely more appropriate after this shambles of a campaign.

Why didn't you mention this before? 20 of us have just ordered donkey costumes to send off Heskey after all of his efforts, bit of a clash, sums up our season, I blame McLeish.
Why didnt Randy say something on his daily briefings to us.

I think a few players should be celebrated

Carlos  - with fans dressing as suggested, especially comedy hair to match his sometimes comedy defending

Heskey - the same fans periodically falling over and waving their arms about in anguish then after 60 minutes feign an injury and ask to leave the stadium with big pretend bags of cash

Beye - Fans dressed like Ronnie Biggs - becuase it has been the biggest theft of money in the history of the game

That's okay - in keeping with the Spanish theme of the day, we can take turns at pushing you off the roof of the Main Stand at Carrow Road. Ay Caramba, Vamos, Isla del Encanto etc.

Still can't understand the logic of letting Carlos go. More madness from the board - why do they seem to like pissing-off the fans all the time? They just haven't got a clue on football matters - dumb-ass decision. I'm not renewing my Season Ticket next season if McLeish is still there! I didn't think I'd ever say this, but I hate Lerner and his cronies!

I am surprised nobody has mentioned the most glaring weakness in letting Carlos go, namely that we now have very few players for whom we have a song, as opposed to a simple chant. Carew, Ashley Young, Marlon, Emile and now Carlos. What is the club coming to?

A good committed pro - Dave summed it up well earlier this week when he said that he was the opposite of Emile in that fans generally liked him, but 5 managers chose not to play him. I always felt we were more solid with Carlos in the team, though I winced when he had the ball at his feet.

I don't understand why his perceived lack of ability should preclude him from a decent send off. If some supporters merely liked him as a character and want to show that, I don't see why it should be seen as over the top.

Also ut of the four players above, I'd say only McGrath is a legend.

Carlos is a top bloke and a decent pro. That's something we've been, and indeed football in general, has been sorely lacking in recent times. I for one wouldn't begrudge giving one of the good ones a good send off. Plus, it'd be a bit of fun and light heartedness in an otherwise fucking dire, miserable season.

I usually find there's something a bit Albion about fancy dress, but Cuellar is apparently a good bloke, and he's a decent player, plus it has been bad enough watching us this season at home or on telly, so if anyone deserves to enjoy themselves after this shit year, it is our away support, so good luck to them.

We decided on this as its either ANOTHER boring, miserable anti McLeish moan and booo boring that fails to take off.

I know, lets actually NOT be miserable at a game - I know for one or 2 of you who have made comments that is very hard, but its about time we got some positivity around here.

He is getting a send off as he is an extremely likeable football player, he gave his all when playing for us. EASILY been our best defender this season. CARES about the fans unlike the majority of the team. How he is being let go this summer is beyond most fans.

Its about time our fans had some fun, a laugh and a good time - if the team wont do that on the pitch, then we will do it ourselves.

If you are looking for masks on the day, either tweet me @micsymmonds or PM me here and ill get back to you.

Enough of the McLeish crap, its getting boring now. Fans can sing all day long but we have done enough of that at Bolton and games since. Lets let the players, particularly the young ones and players like Cuellar know that we have one of the best away following in the league.

Some of you really need to get a grip. Killjoys is an understatement

Not critisizing, I am just saying its pretty frustrating when the fans try and do something positive, yet people reply basically saying boo i want an anti mcleish protest etc, or Cuellar is rubbish etc.

We want all the help we can get - from anyone who has met him would know how much of a nice guy he is. Hitz wasnt the best player in the world for us but he is considered by a lot of fans as a legend for how he cared for the fans.

Sometimes its what players do off the pitch which can mean so much to some fans.

Do not mean to critisize anyone and i apologise if i have offended anyone as well, we just want to have a bit of fun on the last game of the season.

It's going to be fun anyway.....some will be in fancy dress, some will be dressed to look like Cuellar, some will sing anti McLeish songs, some will have even walked there, some will be boozed up, some won't.

But all of us will be pretty relieved that there is nothing on the game.

The only point that will unite the majority is the fact that b-lose are staying down and we will all join in that song.

There are a few participants in Sunday's game that will not be with us next season - in the main, fortunately.

I'm sure that everyone will have some fun, regardless of their attire - blessed relief at the end of a truly painful season. I'm sort of wishing I'd got a ticket for this now.

Have fun.

I have been in fancy dress last away day for the previous 4 seasons, and if I was going I would be again but a combination of finances and refusing to go while 'he' is there since I went Wigan away means I wont be......however if I was, I would certainly get all Spanish and have a bit of banter! Last away day dressing up is a right craic.....although when you get off the bus in town at 09:00 and walk from bull st over to paradise place for a breakfast and a beer prior to catching the train, your not quite as relaxed and very conscious of your apppearnce, unlike a few hours later when your well oiled!

Generally always well recieved by others, and you do get to see some cracking costumes.

He's just popular, and has been for a while.

He's not the greatest player we'd had. He's not the greatest player we've got now, but people like him, so good on them for saying goodbye properly.

Also, can you blame anyone for wanting to do anything to make themselves smile after what has been a season of precious little to smile about?

He is/was probably our best defender but that goes to show the position were in at the moment rather than his ability. Although some of his displays at right back under O Neill, I witnessed some of the worse distribution of the ball i've ever seen.

What I do like about him and why he deserves recognition at Norwich is that he is clearly a genuine bloke who also respects the fans, which can't be said of a lot of footballers.

Yeah, he does come across as being one of the good guys.

On you first point, the 'best defender at the club' line gets trotted out often on here.  I'm curious to know when he actually proved this title?  He's been solid, hasn't moaned.  That is all.

Yeah he comes across as a nice bloke, but the best defender at the club? I don't think so, but even if he was, so what? With a defence as shite as ours it's hardly high praise.
We've had far better players leave our club who contributed ten times more to the cause as Cueller ever has without as much as a cheerio, but the exceptionally average Cueller is treated like some kind of "legend".
Peculiar people some Villa fans are.

Yeah, he does come across as being one of the good guys.

On you first point, the 'best defender at the club' line gets trotted out often on here.  I'm curious to know when he actually proved this title?  He's been solid, hasn't moaned.  That is all.

Being solid and not moaning, is about the height of my expectation for Premier League players these days.

Yes, Mike. I know what you mean.  But that's because we support a club who are currently going nowhere and our expectations match this.

"Backup Quarterback Effect", as I mentioned above.

However, considering that his fellow senior defenders are Hutton, Warnock, Collins & Dunne; it could be said that he didn't have a lot to do to prove his title.

I refuse to get involved, nobody made any effort when I was trying to push a big farewell day for Moustapha Salifou.

I did. I got dressed up as Salifou for our last game of the season last year against Liverpool. For some reason though, my blacking-up seemed to really annoy Luis Suarez and Kenny Dalglish so I thought it best to go home and change.
