Title: Update on Bent- source SSN
Post by: Virgil Caine on May 02, 2012, 04:22:30 PM
Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish says England striker Darren Bent could be fit in time for Euro 2012 this summer.

Bent is on the mend after ankle surgery and the news he is recovering well will serve as a welcome boost for Roy Hodgson, who was named the new England boss on Tuesday.

Bent, 28, scored three of his four international goals during the Euro 2012 qualifiers but landed awkwardly on his ankle during a match against Wigan on 25 February and ruptured his ligaments, an injury which was expected to rule him out until next season.

But McLeish said: "I don't think there is a chance of him playing again for Villa this season but the doc thinks he's got a chance for the Euros, he's talking about four or five weeks.

"Darren's running and working individually with the physios. I'm not sure if he's at the level of striking a ball yet but he can't be far away from that now.

"The physios will be working on him to get him back to his peak fitness and we have to make sure he gets back good and proper.

"I said 'are you ready to go on the bench at the weekend or something?' and he said 'no, not quite, but I'm making good progress'."

Without wishing to start another anti McLeish tirade I found the last sentence interesting- surely he is kept up to date by the medical team on a players progress?

He may be making clear he's exploring every possibility in order to field his strongest team. Not an entirely stupid thing to do.

Apparently not.  I just posted the full piece from the official site on the match thread.  In one breath he's asking "Benty" if he's fit to be a sub, the next he doesn't know if he's quite ready to kick a ball!

He makes it very clear that he has no idea just how fit or otherwise his star striker actually is.

Maybe he's just not into making any rash predictions. Maybe Bent has been training with a ball, but he doesn't want to say so. I don't get this obsession with turning AM's every utterance into proof of his incompetence.

When you are picking the team, most of our players can't strike a ball on the field so yes Alex, "Benty" might as well sit on the bench.

There's plenty else to slag him off about without needing to read extra into off hand comments he makes.

He would score more goals sitting on the bench with our present manager in charge .

Well call me old fashioned, but if I was teetering on the edge of both relegation and the tin tack, I'd be asking for an update on Bent's condition almost on an hourly basis.  I certainly wouldn't be completely oblivious to whether or not he'd started kicking a ball in anger or not.

Hang on a second.  Our manager is still being paid a fortune, and yet he was too spineless to venture out of the dugout at he weekend, and this week he doesn't know the condition of arguably our best player.  If he doesn't want to appear incompetent, then best not to make stupid statements.

Risso, our manager could rescue a child from the path of a speeding bus and you would find a reason to call him a spineless prick.

What? He rescued a child from the path of a speeding bus? You'd think he'd spend less time being a super hero and more time on the training pitch. The spineless prick.

Odd comments but the main news there is he definitely isn't going to play for us again this season. Sod England.

I'm more concerned about results and performances than I am how he words a pretty pointless message about Darren Bent.

Just what we need really. Lose our top scorer for months, then put him straight in the shop window.

Not sure if this link will work as am on my mobile but the impression I got is that Bent is very nearly fit AM asked if he felt fit enough to sit in the bench. Bent said no

I don't think we'll see him a Villa shirt again

Link worked fine. I think the club are very good at communication these days, with AVTV etc. Some may ridicule everything they say but it is better than a wall of silence.
Regarding your last sentence, I tend to agree, but that is only my own cynical view.

Well, I suppose the new manager is going to have to find some funds from somewhere to rebuild the squad ....

Whatever happened to the players saying that they would turn out on one leg to perform for their beloved club.

Oh i remember, they all became multimillion pound mercenaries who only play for themselves

I thought this season they all trained without the ball, hence wtf is that lets kick it away its round and it looks awkward.

Basically, if he wants to leave, he'll leave....and after the club's "transition" from where it was when he signed, who could blame him?

I have 2 sides to this. If he wants away, I hope he is fit, scores 5 goals and we get 20 million back on him. If he wants to stay, then I hope he puts his feet up.

I quite agree, his impressively consistent ability to lead teams to PL relegation or as near as damn it, is ample proof.  He doesn't need to say a thing.

Didn't want to start a new thread but Darren Bents just posted this on twitter. "@DarrenBent: People need to get there facts right "refused to be on the bench" I need to be asked for me to refuse, #facts

I havent seem the papers today so what's he referring to?

Scrap the last bit. I've just found the answer within this thread.

McLeish has said he has asked him, the pundits on soccer sat had a pop at hom without knowing the facts, and Bent is saying he has not been asked to go on the bench. Interesting and clearly no communication between manager and player.

This has all come about because of McLeish's comments. The guy really is clueless. Having just watched how Norwich played away to Arsenal and comparing it to how we rolled over there really shows how clueless McLeish is.

Yes,in the article on the OS Mcleish definitely gave the impression that he had asked Bent if he was ready for the bench and he said no which is a complete contrast to what Bent has just tweeted.

There is enough to criticise McLeish about without plumbing the depths, Bent is out for the season and a quick 'are you fit to sit on the bench yet' 'No boss' is in danger of being blown out of all proportion.

He didnt need to say anything really.Nobody was expecting him back this season The problem is because Mcleish is so unpopular everything that comes out if his mouth will be scrutinised, another reason why his position is untenable as things are much more likely to get misconstrued

He needs to go

Watching the Villa this season , you can tell there is no communication between the players and the manager.
