Just picked this up from Sporting Life, seems appropriate to put in this thread:

Quote
Aston Villa supporters are being urged to attend a pre-match protest against manager Alex McLeish ahead of Sunday's home clash with Manchester City.

A statement posted on the 'Vital Villa' (VV) fans' website claims the current record of six wins in 24 Barclays Premier League games is "relegation form."

It also claims the Villa players are "seeming to be in open revolt" following Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Newcastle.

The statement reads: "We have played 24 games this season, we have won six! Is this good enough? No. This is relegation form. Alex McLeish is not the man to lead Aston Villa.

"He had a full pre-season, was given £20million (approximately) to spend and has players of the calibre of Darren Bent, Gabby Agbonlahor and Stephen Ireland to work with (also the most promising batch of home-grown players produced in years).

"Despite all this, we find ourselves 13th in the table and without a home win since Bonfire Night (November 5).

"Now after the debacle of Sunday, with the players now seeming to be in open revolt, the future is looking very bleak indeed.

"We need to act now before it is too late and the unthinkable happens.

"If you support this, please join us 3pm on Sunday, Trinity Road Stand by the McGregor Statue. If you don't then please ignore this."

Some sections of supporters were unhappy when McLeish made the switch from local rivals Birmingham to replace Gerard Houllier last summer.

But it remains to be seen whether there will be substantial tangible support for the proposed protest on Sunday.

Villa sold Ashley Young and Stewart Downing for a combined £35million to Manchester United and Liverpool respectively last summer.

They spent around £17million in signing Charles N'Zogbia, Shay Given and Alan Hutton plus Jermaine Jenas on loan from Tottenham.

McLeish was aware of the constraints he was under and often admitted he has been instructed to reduce the "astronomical" wage bill by club owner Randy Lerner.

The former Rangers boss has also conceded this is a season of transition for the midlands club but remains convinced he is the right man at the helm to eventually revive Villa's fortunes.

I'm not a McLeish fan but this won't help!

So protesting by turning up to the game and meeting at a place they were going to be at anyway. Sheeesh Randy must be worried. All this achieves is fans booing the team at home when really they need support. Counterproductive.

The mentality seems to be that everyone has the same opinion, but only the 'real fans' care enough to do something about.  It totally preculdes the possibility that they are 100% wrong in their opinion, surprisingly.

"If you support this, please join us 3pm on Sunday, Trinity Road Stand by the McGregor Statue. If you don't then please ignore this."

That's my favourite line in the whole piece. 'If you don't.... please ignore this.' Genius.

I can understand why some are unhappy - I'm pretty deflated about things myself, though I'd expected things to happen this way - but I honestly don't see the point of a protest. I'll bet the owners and management are more than happy at what McLeish has done so far.

How can this possibly help the team?

Well, yes.  While I agree with that, if we come out at them and play attaking football (as we can) then we could at least keep the scoreline down and hold our heads up.  With this hanging over us, we could have another Liverpool at home game.

I invite all PROPER fans to join me at 3pm on Sunday at The McGregor Statue for an anti protest protest.
The plan is to stand around in the cold looking  silly and embarrassed for fifty minutes before entering the ground.
Let's face it that's a better idea than sitting in a nice warm pub having a drink with your mates and then going to the match to give our team the vocal support it needs.

Despite being in a similar boat, Everton fans still show up in numbers and create a great atmosphere for their team at Goodison. Their team found a way to outwork and beat Man City the other night. These pricks will only want to see us fail, which is the most ironic thing about this whole protest. Their fire is fuelled by the team losing, and they are too fucking thick to realise otherwise. That if the team wins, that means a 'nose manager wins. They can't live with that. It pisses me off no end that this serves no purpose other than to create more tension than there is already going to be.

This should be fun...

'it's nothing to do with the fact that he's come from blose, it's what he's done, or hasn't done at villa'.

My arse.

'he was given £20 million pounds to spend.'

But we sold our two England International Wingers for £37million. We also needed to replace Luke Young, Reo Coker, Walker and Friedel of our important players last season.

Protest is because players are starting to turn.  If he's lost dressing room , fear the worst.

Are they? Why no protest last season when half the squad were in open revolt? If the players are acting up again then I blame them, as I did last season. If McLeish goes, who's to say they will like the next manager? On form the overpaid wankers will play up again.

Not a personal vendetta, nothing against him, just what he's doing to club.

We were shit last season, too. No protests like this then. Is he to blame for everything shit at B6 and not the owner (who hasn't really backed his man) or the players (who seem to suffer from either bad form or bad attitudes.

Also why is this protest now? We have had some shit performances but why is the protest being planned now when the side is starting to look better and play slightly better football. Where were the protestors after the Tottenham game? We've also been nearer the bottom and had poorer results than Sunday's draw. Why now?

I'm no fan of McLeish, but I'm increasingly supporting him I don't know whether it is the more I hear from these protestors the more I start to support him or whether I have witnessed a tangible improvement in football and performances. The results weren't brilliant but we managed to show some attacking impetus sadly lacking in some of our games earlier this season against QPR and to an extent Newcastle. We are having 10+ shots where earlier on we were having 0. I just cannot fathom why the protests are happening now.

Not too sure about that, Toronto.

They've been getting their lowest crowds in years this season and Goodison is probably the whiniest, most whingey crowd in the league.

They're also constantly complaining about their own leadership (board level).

Our own crowd have shown this season that they can get behind the team when given some encouragement (Arsenal and QPR, for example). It'd be great to think the crowd could lift the team spontaneously, but that doesn't happen these days.

In the two matches I cited, the team upped their game, and looked a bit bothered (for a change) and the crowd reacted superbly. Even Pat Murphy was impressed.

I don't think a handful - and I bet it's at most 50 people on this "demo" - of people refusing to respond is going to make a whole heap of difference.

Can we have a Guess the Crowd & Prediction Thread for the protest?

My GTC is 43 and Prediction is this -

3pm - The 43 are all in position singing about Small Heath.
3.03pm - The 43 are getting restless are there are so few of them and start to shout a little louder before someone decides to start a 'stampede'.
3.04pm - The 43 find themselves by Villa Village. They stop there, and start singing 'We want McLeish out', pointing the fingers at the offices above the shop.
3.07pm - More than half of the 43 have now raised their scarves over their faces as they continue to lay into the staff working above the shop.
3.12pm - They move on, making their way past the back of the North Stand, to be apprehended by Police, telling them they can't go that way.
3.13pm - After shouting at the Police, they turn away, and form an orderly queue to purchase a fanzine from a keen salesman who has sought an opportunity.
3.17pm - After spending their £2, they turn again, this time walking back towards the Trinity, before breaking up into smaller groups, having forgotten what they turned up so early for. Complaints about the cold start to go around, for which McLeish gets blames, so they start their songs again. Now, there are only about 10 left.
3.20pm - The 10 remaining Super Great Wonder Fans are queueing at the turnstile, moaning about how many people don't care about the club. They are however, proud of their bed sheet that they held.

I was quite impressed with McLeish's demeanour on Sunday: he was engaged, passionate and prepared to have a go at players that did not play to his script. And, by and large, the team played okay (defensive idiocy aside).
Yes, his substitutions have been suspect at times and he has seemed to stumble across the value of palying Herd and then Clark alongside Petrov as the midfield. His biggest problem was that he prioritised buying N'Zog over a couple of decent centre backs in the close-season.

The point is, we have McL at the moment: why shoot his legs away at tihis crucial time in the season when the
chairman is unlikely to get rid?

His biggest problem was that he prioritised buying N'Zog over a couple of decent centre backs in the close-season.

To be fair to him, he had Dunne and Collins, who had formed an excellent partnership that, it seemed at the time, Houllier had messed up.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the summer's priority was replacing Ash and/or Downing.

It's at times like this I recall Henry Rollins' advice to Morrissey:

"Go for a walk, get some sunshine, get some vitamin C. Get a girlfriend, get a James Brown CD, GET OVER IT!"

The worst thing about this is people on both sides making out their the better fan, as a fan of Villa we all have a choice in how we react to things that happen to our club! Some may become alcoholics some may boo for 90 minutes every fortnight others might just stay away altogether but I'm guessing they all love the Villa!

One thing that does piss me off is people saying that the protesters will embrace "us", at the end of the day who cares what others think? It's something that has been aimed at the Brigada lads a few times. At the end of the day what our fans do at our club has fuck to do with Mancs, Scousers or the Noses across the city.

OCCUPY VILLA VILLAGE

Idiots. This is perhaps one of the reasons that persuade me that McLeish should go though, we could win the European Cup and he still wouldn't win over a large majority of the fans, and until he goes attendances will continue to plummet; though maybe we're better off without these uninformed fools embarrassing our club.

I swear to god I've heard people at the Villa blaming McLeish for the exits of Downing and Young.

Well for a start we finished 16th under O'Leary in 2006. I get a strong feeling that these idiots only realised they were 'true Villa fans' after we started performing well under O'Neil.

I bet they don't even know who Juan Pablo Angel is.

We would have been below 13th last season at points too? And we've probably been lower earlier this one too.

Must have a very short attention span.

Well, we all see different things, John. I never saw wingers as the priority since we had Albrighton and also some talent through the middle. Collins was my biggest concern in the close season; that and a defensive MF.
But, as you imply, maybe my mind is post-rationalising stuff.

I'm listening to Drive on 5Live and they've just done an interview with a biologist that has discovered that cabbages can communicate with one another.

I think we could have told them where to look for living proof.

By the way the story about cabbages was real.

Quote
I’m sure most of you have seen the reports in the papers today regarding imminent protests this Sunday before the Man City game. Normally I ignore this kind of thing as a few protests have been supposedly organised recently but nothing has come to pass. However in light of the media coverage I felt some sort of response necessary.

Is this really the time for this? Are things really at the point of protest?

At the moment, after 24 games we are sitting in 13th place, which is higher than last season. We are 8 points above the drop zone and not really much sign of us being dragged into a relegation scrap. We are only 5 points behind 8th place in the league.

Much of the ill feeling is directed at Alex McLeish and I’m afraid it all stems down to where he came from. Stats support the fact that he has a better record to Houllier last season and a record that is on par with O’Neil’s first season. I don’t remember any protests taking place back then.

In the statement issued by the protesters they state the following

‘He had a full pre-season, was given £20m (approx) to spend and has players of the calibre of Darren Bent, Gabby Agbonlahor and Stephen Ireland to work with (also the most promising batch of home-grown players produced in years).

Just to address this.  I can only add up 18.5 million pounds worth of purchases. In the current market that does not even begin to scratch the surface. Darren Bent has proven time and time again that he is a proven goal scorer but the fact is he has continued scoring recently despite the main channels of supply (Young & Downing) being sold. Agbonlahor and Ireland, I actually thing McLeish has done well in returning these players to form. Certainly something that the previous manager was unable to do!

What do these protesters actually hope to achieve? The sacking of McLeish? Please tell me which top flight manager is available to take his place.

These people will say in a seductive manner ‘if you’re a real fan you will go and protest because how can you watch your club decline?

I say how can you go to the protest and help contribute to any potential decline by sticking the knife in? The image at of the club is not great at the moment, how do these people expect anyone of any good calibre to join a club where the fans have treated their last two managers with nothing but contempt and have a record of booing their own players. I believe David Moyes said publicly that he would never come to Villa because of how the fans treated Houllier.

I’m not denying that there are some issues that need working out, but recently we have been seeing progress on the pitch. In the last 8 games we have scored 15 goals. That is not the stat of a defensive manager, especially when you consider the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal are included in that run.

At this time we need to be uniting as fans, not further dividing. Not protesting, look at the state Blackburn fans have gotten themselves into. They are now laughed at on a daily basis.

Get behind the club, get behind the team. It is no coincidence that the away form is vastly superior to the home form, due to the never say die mentality of our brilliant away fans. We need to take that into the ground at Villa Park. Stop booing the players. Stop crying about what we have not got and what has been! Look at what we have got and push the team forward!!

That’s how this team moves forward, with loud vocal support at Villa Park. Some games we will lose, some we will win! But we need to do it together!!

WE ARE VILLANS!!

BE THE 12TH MAN!

Thanks for reading

Proud to be a Villan

If the Ginge has lost the dressing room, I hope Warnock, Collins, Heskey, Dunne are lost forever. I also would like any player who does not give 100% for Aston Villa to be got rid of. Pissed off hearing about players revolt etc. If it's the same players as last time F,,, m off.

I found this
We was  there at 10 to 3, Big Wazza told me and Dazzy G to get their early and get the chanting going, me little brother was dragged along too and all he could say was “you promised me chips” and “im hungry” any way Fart Breath Mike and his mate that doesn’t wash much Frowsty Mark came along the Trinity and the chanting started “Alex Mcleish is a ginger bluenose” that bought a laugh.
Next thing the cops showed up in two vans and we were outnumbered 32 to 8, they asked who the ring leader was and we explained that Big Wazza had to go to Tescos for his mum and was running late. It was just then that Bogey Face Paul, Sewerage Bob and Spider turned up in his spider man outfit. We asked” what the fuck yer doing wearing that, its not the end of the season you know”. Spider just started running around and jumping in the air, he had obviously been at the crystal meth again. I don’t think spider even supports The Villa, in fact the bloke is so off his face I don’t think he even watches football. Then Fat Dave and Stupid Frank turned up with a banner with Alex Mcleish in a Blues Shirt, well it was supposed to be Alex Mcleish but it looked like Mr Burns off the Simpsons.
The lettering was great though GET BACK TO WHERE YOU BELONG and there was a drawing of a Pig in a pen with ST Andrews written at the bottom, although it looked more like a pink cow.
Eventually Big Wozza came running along out of breath with his arms full of leaflets but tripped over on the curb and the leaflets got blown all over the place. The last thing we heard as he was put in the back of the police transit was “get those fucking leaflets handed out” no one moved so I took me brother to get some chips.

It's just a page full of teenagers from Eastern Europe who can barely spell the club name and 30 year old blokes called "Chaz AVFC 4 LIFE Birk" who have no other purpose but to name every conceivable scapegoat they can, who at the moments seems to be McLeish or Bent.

The only thing I find moderately understandable and actually agree with is the abuse towards the full backs, even though I don't think that Hutton's been as bad as people are making out in the last few weeks.

Pathetic is what it is.

Trouble is,they are not all so young.  Everybody is entitled to their opinion, of course, but to do this immediately before a crucial (as are all games i know) game is ridiculous.  They'll be glad if we do lose, which we probably will against the team in form and top of the league, so they can gloat.

I do think over the last decade some of our fans have become obsessed with them. It was never like that before, the Rags were just laughed at and generally ignored. Most of our songs are now about them. Obviously the Rags only exist to hate us but I really fail to understand why some of our fans give them so much importance.

There will be a few more at this protest unfortunatley, mainly because of the tv cameras and because it'll give the protesters chance to wave at their 'bro's and ring them on their mobile phones innit.

Judging by the unproffessional childish mess Jazzy G has made in putting his point of view across on here, i can only presume all his fellow clan are of the same ilk. It's very sad.

The last thing we heard as he was put in the back of the police transit was “get those fucking leaflets handed out” no one moved so I took me brother to get some chips.

Of course it will all be 'we want Capello' now.
There will be some interesting spellings of that name.
Cappello
Cappelo

Also Cappelo,s claret and blue army

I dread to think of what other variations they come up with.

There will be loads of people milling around the statue on their way into the ground

I think I'll make a protest site.

something like this!

What I would like is for everyone to go to their seat at 4 pm and support the team for christ's sake!  If you are thinking about coming to VP to boo the team or individual players then don't bother coming, stay in and watch Eastenders or whatever other mindless crap you endure without a sound!

Seen this post on there,

AM is a tactical dimwit. Not once has he played a midfielder or anyone else out of position at right-back. He also doesn't sound Irish or look like Martin O'Neill

is this why Chris Smith hasn't put anything on here yet.

No, it's because I'm ill you prat and because I'm in favour of giving McLeish a fair crack of the whip. He's a decent man.

Lookslike the Guest Book has gone. They have modified the site claiming the they 'gave him a chance' with reference to McLeish. I could ride a coach and horsrs through that statement but will not bother other than to say what bollocks it is.

In an attempt to be rational about McLeish, he inherited a team which had just lost its two best players and wasn't given the proceeds to re-invest in proper replacements.

He could go 'shit or bust' about how we play, but that could be suicidal and he can't go defensive as we have such a crap defence, again inherited.

So, like any Manager without funds he's stuck.

The difference (at this point in tie at B6) comes in the evidential motivational ability ( this is where MON scores) and I'm not sure he has enough of that.

He is a slightly dour person, likeable but dour all the same, and no John ( guitar in his office) Gregory either.

So, he a) either grabs a personality to warm to ( doubtful) or b) is given a World Class scouting team and a £100 million transfer kitty - plus the ability to pay the £100k a week demanded by top, top players and we'd be Ok I reckon.

As a) or b) are pie in the sky, he's onto a loser at VP with the fans, however, as the fans don't appoint Managers it's totally pointless ( literally in our case) in protesting about him, so GET BEHIND THE TEAM.

That's how I see it !!

I think the following might happen. They'll continue to bang the 'McLeish Out' drum over the weekend whilst keeping an eye on the possibilty of it being 'a bit nippy', then when they get wind of a possible poor turnout, they'll cancel the protest and claim they're doing it to give the players their full support.

Or is that 'Serport'?

I agree with this post.McLeish hasn't managed to motivate and get players running through walls for him-agreed, but neither did Houllier. Some of the football I've seen has been good let down by a shocking defence. If im fed up with anyone it's Randy Lerner-I'm surprised there isn't more feeling against him.He owns two clubs, both have poor records.I doubt he'd have appointed O'Neill on his own either.I wish he'd just sell up.

There are a lot of Villa fans who will never be happy which is a real shame for the club.I remember being very frustrated with the negativity aimed at John Gregory when he got Villa to the top.I really wonder what fans expect?

McLeish has got a rough deal so far in my book.He needs the chance to build his own team before being judged.
