Very good idea but don't really see the point in going to a school in Sutton Coldfield where we already have a strong fanbase.
The headteacher alluded to this
We have a lot of Villa fans here at Boldmere Primary School and we may have a few more soon with this great scheme.
What we need to do is target inner-city Birmingham where there is a high ethnic minority population - areas like Aston, Handsworth, Lozells, Nechells, Small Heath, Hockley, Winson Green, Sparkbrook, Ward End, Ladywood, Saltley etc.
These are the areas where we lose support to Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal.
-
Beat me to it TRS-T ;)
A great initiative that should encourage the younger generation into the game; or at the very least help raise our failing attendances. I like it.
-
This is following on from the last SCG:
6. Would the club consider giving some free tickets away to local schools? Especially kids who play for after school clubs. Or even offer junior ticket deals where a player can hand out tickets?
With the right process in place, this could be a great idea. Since the SCG we have spoken to a number of Head Teachers and PE co-ordinators and are currently finalising a pilot of a ticket based scheme for primary schools. Watch this space.
Russell Jones
Head of Marketing
First safe standing now this, which I think is a great idea. Perhaps they're beginning to take on board some of the criticism on places like this about communication/listening to the fans.
Edit: TRS-T - This is probably the pilot referred to in the quote above, maybe they'll target some of those areas if it works out.
-
Only to be expected that some would try to find a negative with this initiative.
The scheme is open to all primary schools with a Birmingham postcode.
-

Does that mean it's open to schools in West Bromwich? ;D
-
Great idea and something that has been mentioned before on here. Well done to the club on this.
-

Yes because West Bromwich is covered by the B70/B71 post codes

It would be if they had any. Most kids there are off working in the Mushy Pay factories by the age of three.
-
Good idea villa, maybe get some kids stop watching united or liverpool
-
If you go to Newcastle, everyone supports Newcastle.
It should be like that in Birmingham (with Villa obviously.)
-

Even the Sunderland fans?

It's a one club town unlike Birmingham. We don't do too badly considering the amount of clubs in this area. We piss all over your club Small Heath when it comes to support, that's for sure.
-
bet they nicked this idea of MK Dons they have been doing it for years
-
In our school (Sheldon area), I'd say Blues have way more fans than other teams, then maybe Villa, but not a great deal more (if any) than Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool & Arsenal.
Share the wealth - get out into the poorer areas and give them tickets to fill the ground up and mabe pick up some new fans for the future!
-
At my place there are plenty of Villa fans (wonder why?), a few glory-hunters and a couple of knuckle-draggers. It would be nice if this initiative (as good as it is) was extended to neighbouring areas.
-

How is it then that Everton and Man City (both the smaller clubs in their respective cities) have a similar fanbase to us (the bigger club in our city)?
Surely they should have next to no fans having to compete with the two biggest clubs in England?
They compete with Man Utd and Liverpool.
We compete with Blues (and Albion.)
Also Birmingham has a bigger population than Manchester and Liverpool.
-
Is every single thing you post a thinly veiled piece of trolling?
-
If, as a Villa fan, I was on an independent Villa message board with 500+ posts and had accusations and comments aimed at me at being a knuckledragger, I'd be long gone. Are you Villa? Or SHA?

Even the simpletons on Villa Talk thought the same.

Villa.
-
Hope its a success, its really important to get kids through the doors to see games, something which was easier for us when we were kids. In this day and age of wall to wall sky football its good that some kids will get to know how much better it is to be at VP.
-
Excellent initiative. Hope it goes well.

Because Everton have a history that comes close to ours and Manchester City are very likely going to win the Premier League. We are also in competition with three biggish clubs whereas they compete with one each.
-
I'm sure they will get round to the inner city schools but they can't visit them all on the same day.
-
Only to be expected that some would try to find a negative with this initiative.

That is a bit unfair though. The school I went to had a CV postcode, yet is closer to Villa Park than say, Henley in Arden school which has a Birmingham postcode. Oh well, a good initiative nontheless.
-
I think the comparison to Manchester teams and their support, especially the red shite, is a little unfair. If anything there are so many other teams in and around the greater Manchester area that suffer because all the kids wanted to support the glamour club and in the Northwest for many years it was always United. The reason a lot of clubs in the north struggle is not just due to the easy travelling to United but also with that silly egg chasing game they have up there - which in most instances gets more crowds that most NW football teams.
A lot of the United fan base stems all the way back to Munich 58 - where due to the tragedy alot of people, including non football fans, adopted them as thier team and it just grew through generations - especially for fans that are not from Manchester.
Historically we have never had a huge home following - but for as long as i can remember we have always been known to have one of the largest and devout away followings across most teams

The cynic in me would say target the more affluent areas where there is already a good fan base. More likely to convert pupils into regular fans, and more likely that the children/parents have the funds available for match tickets/replica kits etc. In marketing speak-pick the low hanging fruit first.
-
I think people are misunderstanding this. All that happened yesterday was they had a PR event to launch the scheme. It doesn't mean one school has been given first go, I'm guessing they did it there as it was relatively close to training ground.

Encouraging kids from the Sutton Coldfield area is not a bad place to start. They're more likely to receive pocket money to spend on merchandise than kids from inner city schools. Bringing an instant return.
-
Hmmm, the only problem with this is that this, coupled with the bring a friend for a tenner and it being cheap-ish anyway; mean that it is going to be very hard for me to guess what the crowd will be on Wednesday night.
And there's a whole pound riding on it, so it's vital stuff.
-
My 2 boys came back with news of this scheme today from their school. The school is using it as reward for improved performance in sport ie beat your cross country time etc. They go to an inner city school and there will be no charge for the tickets.
-
Greay stuff from the club.

It'll put them off running for life.
-
Where will the kids be located in Villa Park?
Family stand?
-
You don't see many Manchester United shirts being worn on the streets of Sheffield. Followers of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are even harder to come by.
In the city where the world's first football club was formed, only two sides count for anything. You either watch Sheffield United or Sheffield Wednesday - there just isn't room for other teams.

£2. It's a rollover as we forgot to guess last time, remember?

Well done Villa.

Support your local team or your dad's team.
Anything else is unacceptable.

Coventry is now, and has been for five years, my local team, and my dad is a nose.
Who should I support?

Coventry haven't always been your local team though.
And Villa is not too far from Coventry so you are still supporting a local team.

Indeed. Add to that with a game on Sunday it doesn't give the players long enough to recover from the malaria, cholera, diphtheria and yellow fever jabs they would have needed had they gone to a school in south Birmingham.

Up to him.
I'm mostly not thinking of people who move around though so let's keep this nice and simple.

What about someone who lives in Birmingham and whose dad supports Manchester United even though he wouldn't recognise Manchester on a map?
-
Someone who is currently 8 years and is born, raised and still lives in Oxford. All his family are from Oxford and still live there and none of them like football or have ever been to Birmingham but he has realised he likes football and chooses to support Villa, is that allowed or is he a glory hunter as he didn't choose Oxford Utd?

You'd hope they'd support a local team but if they supported Man U you can't really blame them - it's their dad's fault.

However the more Villa fans we can get the better ;)

If you get your team off your parents then you can't really be blamed - your parents naturally influence you.

He's obviously been a Man United fan since he was born.

What if their parents moved from Oxford to Manchester while their mother was expecting them, but en route their car broke down and they had to spend the night at that hotel by J10 of the M6 at Walsall, their mother went into labour prematurely and while being taken to the Manor hospital she gave birth in the ambulance on the Wolverhampton/Walsall border?

Aston Villa - Tickets For Schools.
Small Heath - Tickets For Fools.

I was nearly born in Wales. *Shudder*
-
My brother-in-law, who has had absolutely feck all interest in football in the ten years I've known him, is taking my six year old niece (who also has shown feck all interest in football) to the Villa/Chelsea game this weekend because she was given a free ticket at school.
He's had to pay for his. And now he's gone and bought two scarves, a flag and a fecking teddy bear for her.
She was even singing "Veela, clap-clap-clap, Veela..." to me the other day
I hope she fecking hates it and wants to leave after ten minutes. Which I'm convinced she will.
Good work Villa.
-
My niece who goes to school in Castle Brom and my nephew who goes to school in Yardley have both got tickets through this scheme.
I think this type of scheme and the 4-4-£40 deal against Fulham are excellent and a great way of getting young fans into the ground who may otherwise not be able to afford to go.
The noses did this a few years ago with there ‘kids for a quid’ deal and they got a lot of people who may not have had an interest in going to the sty any other time through the turnstiles and even though they may not go now they still call themselves noses.
We need to do things like this to encourage people to support the villa and not become glory hunters following Manure or Citeh.
