Title: FA Cup 2011-12: 2nd round draw
Post by: Andy_Lochhead_in_the_air on October 30, 2011, 02:31:22 PM
763 teams (including Villa ) set out on the road to Wembley this season.
With todays 1st round proper draw, by my calculations we are already down to the last 131 with 7 4th round qualifiers still to be decided.
The nearest thing to how football used to be.
Arlesley Town or East Thurrock United away in Round 3 will do me.

My mate follows Nantwich Town and is gutted with their draw away to MK Dons. He was optimistic they could get to the third round. I'd love us to get somebody from outside the football league away from home in the third round. Even though we'd probably draw 0-0.

I reckon we will get Blackburn at home in round 3 and win. There will be a team who win their 3rd round match and get kicked out and a lucky loser will be reinstated meaning we will also get Blackburn at home in round 4 which we will also win. Then we'll get Man City away.

Indeed.  I have the distinct impression that we have exhausted ways of going out of the Cup to Man United and Man City will take there place.  I can think of three FA Cup exits to Cit£h in the last 20 years it would only be right that we topped that up to the same level as United over the next decade. <sighs wearily>

I like the FA Cup at this stage.  No forgone conclusions, upsets and the fact the fans are up for it.  Then, of course, the big boys - and the Villa - come along and spoil it.

I've just been a sad anorak and done some analysis of our last 54 years of misery.

1 disastrous Final.

4 semi-finals and 6 quarter finals exits

19 3rd round exits (just over a third)

2 1st round exits (3-1 at Torquay!...Torquay!!)

We've lost to the eventual winners on 14 occasions in that period and the runners up 4 times.

Surprise surprise Man United have knocked us out the most, 6 times, followed by Liverpool 5 and Spurs 4.

It really does make for depressing reading.  Time to get "Abide with me" going on the iPod to cheer me up.

If Gloucester City get passed Chelmsford it's Telford at home faintly disappointed with the draw. Pity we didn't get to play the team drawn out before us rather than after.

6 of those 7 4th qualifying round replays have now been decided.
By my reckoning there are now just 125 teams left out of the 763 who entered and one of them is the Villa !

I am really starting to think this time it is going to be our year !

Newcastle.
I know its a bit sadistic because they havent won an FA Cup or any trophy at all in over 40 years so it would hurt them so much to come so close and miss out. Imagine all those crying Geordies at the end. Imagine Alan Shearer on the TV. (The BBC are just about hanging onto coverage of the final I think ?)  We could dedicate the win to Harry Hampton to rub salt in the wound.

However- given that it's a guaranteed win...heh heh heh...
I really want to beat Stourbridge in the Final!   15 - 1.

if I can't have that I'd like 17-1 against Man City.

An opinion no doubt shared by fans of all teams outside London. Except Londoner Man Utd and Liverpool fans, of course, who no doubt consider the FA to be a considerate and noble organisation for responding to their needs, which, of course, are of greater importance than anyone else's.

The capacity could be as low as 1,500, with the Shed in particular being a lot lower than the Walsall game.  The big problem is the lack of suitable lighting around the exits
