Title: Matchday superstitions
Post by: PeterWithesShin on October 20, 2011, 04:42:32 PM
Do any of you have a matchday superstition?

Mine is I have to wear a replica shirt to a game i'm at, otherwise i'm convinced we'll lose. I wear the same shirt until I see us lose in it and then it's never worn again that season and the ritual starts with another shirt. Some seasons i've come close to running out of shirts!

I've had this superstition for about 25 years now so can't see it changing, so in a few decades when you see some 70 year old bloke wearing a replica shirt, it will probably be me!

So far this season the BFR era Brazil shirt is yet to see us lose so is the current "lucky" shirt.

So do you have a superstition, is yours any more ludicrous than mine?

Exactly the same theory about the shirt, and also I have my Lucky Scarf.

No listening to a Villa match live on the radio as well, it's bad luck.

I have to have the calender on the right date. That's non football too, if its not on the right date I have a bad day. It sounds stupid but it works

I hope there's a midday change of socks the day before to accommodate this.  For everyones sake.

I used to wear the same lucky pants season after season but I stopped when they got a bit crusty and finally disintegrated. Don't have any superstitions now - the football is shit so I don't need to replicate it in my underwear

I don't have any superstition. I sometimes  think about when getting dressed on a match day that I should wear the same stuff as the previous match if  we had won than but  normally fail to find due to my wife's immaculate tidying up of washing!
I used to  think about all the bad result combinations under  some sort of facile belief that if I thought about them and worried they were not going to  come to be. Billy McNeil  era destroyed that belief.

I gave up on superstitions a long time ago.

For the two Wembley trips in the mid-90's, we made sure we walked around the entire stadium before the game (as much as possible, I think it was fenced off half way round).   This was because we did exactly that before the Tranmere game to 'soak in the atmosphere' - and we all know the result of that.

I wear the same lucky pants when I go and watch the Villa I have not had them long and when I've had them on we have never lost.

I always made sure I went through the same turnstile up until the Wigan game a few weeks ago when it was closed for some reason.

I wear earrings that can loosely be classed as shades of claret or blue, ditto my eyeshadow.

No superstitions for me but I did have a mate who insisted on having a Snickers/Marathon on the way to the game for good luck...

I never did get round to asking him why or more importantly what he would have done if the newsagents didn't have any Snickers left!

I always wear a retro shirt, it doesn't normally matter which one. But this week I've made sure the 1971 Wembley shirt is ready because I wore it for the Wigan game and for once we looked half decent. I always call into my local at exactly 12.30 have two pints and stand in the same place at the bar.
Does it work? It must do we haven't lost a home league game yet.

We have to walk out of the Leisure Centre Car Park along a particular route.
At the start of the season we have to buy Cadbury 99s from the ice cream van in front of the church and maintain this purchase until a home defeat.

Used to be that if we lost, I wouldn't wear the t-shirt I had on that day again but have far too many now and can only identify one that is definitely unlucky. Try to wear the same top for cup runs. Also have semi banned myself from going to games in Manchester. 10 visists, 10 defeats.

From my teenage years of getting the bus to Birmingham my mate used to say it was bad luck not to say " Tucker Fastners" when passing the factory. I did this for the next twenty years without fail. Because we used to win more than we lost at home I kept it up but then when it seemed we were drawing every game I went to in the last few years, I ve stopped. Oh and the fact that it's ridiculous as well !!

I walk exactly the same way from Aston station - crossing in the same place and walking on the road for a set distance and then on the pavement at a particular place. Always go up the same steps to the Upper Holte, turnstile 42, and use my lucky loo! Sad, really! Oh, and I always travel backwards on the train, next to the window in a two-seater row. ;)

I only have to have put them on the day before, so the usual practice is to put them on and off just before going to bed, so they are only worn for a few seconds.

I also have to buy a hot dog from the same food stand every match, the one opposite the club shop on Witton Lane, even if I am not hungry!

I always used to get a cheeseburger from the van down the road from the Villa chip shop. He who must be obeyed has me there so early now that I miss out due to him not being ready.

No room in modern football for superstition.  How lucky would we need to be against Man City away?

What we all need to realise is, when the Villa don't win it isn't the team's fault. It's that someone hasn't done their pre-match ritual properly!

I have to shave on a match day. I didn't last week and look what happened. It's not an exact science but its better than blaming Heskey.

Hmmm.. sorry to be suspicious but a lot of these superstitions seem to be an excuse to stuff your traps with hot dogs and botulism burgers outside the ground. I think I'll start my own superstition tonight. Henceforth I must eat a chicken dansak (no pineapple) every friday before a Villa game.

I managed to find a pair of claret boxers with a blue waistband in ASDA, so bought them. Wife hates them, (says they look like council pants!) and they are really uncomfortable, but we haven't lost this season when I have been wearing them.

I do wash them inbetween wears btw!
