Title: If Villa ceased to exist.........
Post by: Drummond on October 12, 2011, 05:50:41 PM
*inspired by another thread.

Who would you support? or would you give up on football completely?

I've been tempted to give up on football completely in the last few years, I hate what the Premier and Champions Leagues have done to the game. However, having lived in Sheffield for a while, I'm tempted to go to Bramall Lane and watch Sheffield United more frequently and think they'd become my team.

I'm going for the Steel City Derby on Sunday. I may never post again........

Don't think I'd enjoy it if I didn't have the same kind of emotional dependency as I do on Villa. I've always liked Celtic and Barcelona, but I don't get upset if they lose, or ecstatic if they win.

FC Aston Villa 1874, in whatever division they ended up starting in.

Failing that, maybe Tammurf or Kidder. Or I could relocate to wherever they are playing that particular season and support Clyde properly.

Taking into account where I now live, 5 years ago or so I would have probably gone for Citeh, but very soon there won't be any room on that particular glory-hunting bandwagon.

So I think I'd start going to Bury with my mate Dominic.

As an aside, when I first moved up here 20 years ago, there is a bloke I vaguely know who moved from London at a similar time.  When he did, he ditched Arsenal and started following Accrington Stanley, then playing in the NW Counties, simply because he like the name and the phoenix from the ashes history. He says he wouldn't have swapped the experience for all the trophies and the Champion's League.

I only support Villa cause my Dad passed the addiction on really, it could have been any other club.

Like most I would ditch the Prem and Championship.
I've always had a soft spot for Scunthorpe and Stenhousemuir up in Scotland.
The reason for this odd pair is when I first started following football properly some 43 years ago, age 9, this pair always finished bottom of the league and I felt sorry for them.
So I'd probably catch a few of their game a season.

That sums it up for me too. I'm a Villa supporter and always have been, it's part of my identity. That being said, I care less about the current team than I ever have and I sometimes feel the club that I love doesn't really exist anymore. Also as I'm now 10,000 miles away I'm over missing the matchday experience so it wouldn't be the end of the world for me.

I only love one club. But I must admit to a soft spot for Grimsby Town. In my previous life as a fully fledged tax payer I was based in Grimsby for many years and when I couldn't get to a Villa game and The Mariners were at home I'd go and watch them.
I enjoyed their glory days in the fourth division when they had a young upcoming manager called Lawrie McMennemy and a centre forward called Matt Tees.
Did you know that Grimsby Town have never played in Grimsby? Blundell Park is in Cleethorpes.

What a daft question.

I'd still support the Villa of course - the legend would live on, and Aston would become the new Gracelands.

We'd be the biggest non-existant team of all time. "Who the F**k are Third Lanark, Melchester Rovers and Barnstoneworth Utd?"

Given Villa and McGregor represented the Big Bang of the football Universe it would obviously end if Villa ceased to exist.

As for other teams I, like Percy, have a soft spot for Celtic and Barca and would keep an eye for their results. The only other team I would attend regularly would be Fluminense assuming I'm back living in Rio. Their colours are a mixture of Villa's and Ireland's and the atmosphere at their big games is electric.

To play devils advocate, one might say:

"I'd feel pretty much as I do now.  We can't win anything of any real value without an Arab owner, Man City have made the game unplayable for the most part and our poor American "billionaire" owner has made it clear that we have no chance of ever getting close to competing.  What's the point now anyway?"

However, I'd just give up on football, as has been said before, football is difficult enough to watch now as it is so without the Villa it'd be pointless.

Worcester City. I reckon I'm not the only one who has got keener and keener on non-league in recent years.

After 1874 Aston Villa, It'd be Worcester City for me, too, I reckon. I've been down St George's Lane quite a few times and my brother now goes there more than he goes to Villa Park anyway, while my other, much younger, brother plays for the youth team.

Failing that, I suppose it would be my adopted home town of Pisa, although it would depend a lot on which team my son ended up following I expect. I already look out quite a bit for Roma, as that's who the father-in-law follows.

Having said all that, I wouldn't follow any of them with any real passion. How do you follow the great footballing love of your life? Anything else would be a let-down. Better off staying single at that point.

I'd spend the cash I currently spend on the Villa on a few weekends away in Europe each year, watching the top teams in great cities... Munich, Milan, Spain or even further afield like Moscow, Kiev etc...

I'd definitely not have another team though, unless it was the re-incarnation of AVFC.

No one, I just wouldn't care if the Villa weren't around. I can totally see why those without an affiliation to a particular team dislike football so much.

By an large, the people who are involved within the game, players and administrators, have become wankers.

I used to watch a fair bit of Wigan when I first moved up north, but as they're just another identikit Premier League team, I'd probably be the same as Chris, watching a bit of football but not supporting anybody else.  I've tried a few games over here, but it's barely any better than watching kids kick a football round the park.

It'd have to be FC Villa or whatever sucessor club came along. On the subject of watching other teams, some weekends I wake up with a yearning to watch some football and the Villa are too far away/too expensive and wonder about some local football but I just can't get myself motivated to do so. As others have said there's no-one else who I have the emotional attachment to like Villa. There are teams I prefer to do better than others but nowhere near the level of gut-wrenching pain or giddy joy I get from Villa

When I moved down to the south-east in the early 1970's, I assumed (wrongly, as it turned out) that it would be too difficult to travel to Villa Park, so I adopted a London team as my second string - QPR, who were playing very exciting football at the time. I went to just one match, against Leeds (a draw, one of the 4 points Brian Clough got as Leeds manager) but felt nothing at all for my adopted team. It was just another football match, with no emotional involvement at all. So I abandoned QPR and started making the trek from Surrey, and now Sussex, to Birmingham. No regrets, despite, as Meanwood Villa says, all the frustrations, disappointments, heartbreak and agony, alleviated by the odd moment of elation.

God, it's difficult.  I'm still trying to imagine a world without Villa.....

Cut to World Without Villa...

'THERE WOULD BE NO WORLD WITHOUT THE VILLA!'  (dramatic voice production)

So, (images) cataclysmic hurricanes, armageddon and all 4 of the horsemen turning up and doing their thing...Sutton Town, Man Utd, Real, Juventus, and River Plate all spinning away into the ether...until there's a new order....

And the first thing to crawl up out of the sea and on to the land is a claret and blue dinosaur called...

Difficult one. As some posters have also said, I would probably lose interest in football totally, other than the odd game on TV.

If Villa had never existed, having parents that came from Aston and Smethwick respectively, I would probably have been a Baggies supporter.

If I still lived in Sutton, and Villa ceased to exist, I would be tempted to support Walsall and/or Boldmere St Michael.

Living down here, I could see me gravitating towards Craven Cottage, although it's a shame Brighton is not a bit closer.

Can I throw this one out there. I don't know that I would be that fussed.

I would of course initially be gutted at losing my team but I would I have the desire and energy to start up a new club? Not the way modern football is I don't think.

And it might just be the excuse I needed to start having a big chunk of my life back that I waste at the moment following a club that, like 86 others, feeds on scraps from the top table with only a fleeting hope of very occasional success and then only in competitions the Sky lot can't be arsed with.

Its a sorry state of affairs.

Get together some like minded people to talk to AFC Wimbledon and get a team together. They only had 5000 fans but look where that got them. They also helped FC United as well

Longford Town!

Ah, a trip to Strokestown Road (not often I have a valid reason to mention my hometown on H&V).

It's called Flancare Park now (or the 'Flan Siro' by the diehards!)

I'd have a different team every week........In other words, whoever were playing Blues!

Is the correct answer.

I'd still watch football on the box but I couldn't support any other team, they're all shit and their fans are twats.
I agree with this

Wouldn't go as far as to say I have a soft spot for any other club, but there are some clubs who I have less disdain for than others.

I'd include Sheffield Wednesday, Wolves and Forest in that lot, but- truth be told- I don't particularly care whether they win, lose or draw.

I might 'Go Continental' more often and attempt to get my fix at some of the grounds that still have standing areas- just for old times sake.   That big bastard of a stand in Dortmund being a particular favourite.

But I don't think it could make up for not having the Villa, I'd probably just spend my time there sobbing like a big baby, thinking about what might have been.

AJ Auxerre. Ground holds 17,500. Love 'em.

No Aston Villa? Wouldn't even look at a league table or results table. Corporate sponsors fuck off and die. I don't drive a Ford and I don't but use Gillette. Why not? Because you piss me off by being at the football you ******!

I'd be stuck on the choice between Peel and St.Georges, depending on which I could find the best internet stream on and who's balance sheets were available to view.

Newcastle Utd for me, not a popular choice, but I have connections up in Toonland and the place is great.

I would treat all organised football in Britain with the contempt it deserves. Aside from Villa I wouldn't miss it. I went to watch the Old Stars last Sunday at Dales Lane, which is where Rushall Olympic play. The regulars have to pay £7.50 to watch the Evo-Stik Premier or whatever it's called. I was astounded.

However, having lived in Sheffield for a while, I'm tempted to go to Bramall Lane and watch Sheffield United more frequently and think they'd become my team.

I'm going for the Steel City Derby on Sunday. I may never post again........

Having lived in Shef for a while myself, I'd go for the classy team with fans from the North(ish) of the city, history, great stadium, unique name ... (sound familiar?)

You'll be fine Sunday, most aggro I've seen has been on the day before around neutral areas (Crookes, Broomhill, Eccy Rd, West St)

Good points Tez. Thing is, Blades are my local team and I can't be a glory hunter!

Shouldn't be too much trouble, pubs will certainly be shut though tonight could be interesting in one or two spots.

20min walk from Greystones is a nice treat, loved going down the cup game last season - skinful of beer after and still home quicker than the drive home. Must meet for a telly game soon.

If Villa ceased to exist tomorrow then i would gravitate to where my favourite Villa players go to, probably then take up an interest in there careers, so if Gabby were playing at Arsenal, I would take an interest generally in Arsenal, would I support them=No,  but I have to be honest I'm struggling this time out to be even interested in Villa...

Way to much finance in sport now for my liking particularly football.

Arsenal. Because I liked their yellow kit as a 5 year old and it became my first kit ever owned. As such, I would just support them instead.

Not really fussed by football at all anymore though.

Probably start watching Hinckley or Barwell and go to Tigers for the first time since I was a teenager. I'd then wait until the powers that be realised that an uncompetitive league kills interest and a wage cap is introduced. I'd then probably end up at the (insert sponsor) Stadium in Leicester.

I'd be delighted (for myself - I'd be sorry for those of you with more commitment than I've got).

I hate what football's become, I live nowhere near VP, I can seldom muster the enthusiasm to go to London aways, I recognise that we're as bad - more or less - as all the other 'EPL' fucknuts, I hate the way that fans' loyalty is exploited until they bleed, I hate that football encourages rational adults to behave like passive-aggressive spoilt children of the worst stripe, and I find the whole thing - even the actual games - totally obnoxious and the very worse thing is that every tiny thing that we do helps to enrich that fucking satan Murdoch.

And yet I still can't help, despite it all, giving a shit.

Leyton Orient.

The girlfriends dad supports them and they are fairly local. I went to a game last season and am looking forward to going and watching them play against Sheffield Utd on Sat.

I haven't been to a Villa game all season. In fact the only game I've been to is Arsenal v Sunderland as I got a free ticket.

I can't afford the Premiership. Still love Villa but its just too much money. Mind you the Mighty o's are still 20 quid. But no need to pay much in travel and I will get a lunch for free at her parents.
