Tight game. I reckon the same side will play, barring any new signings.

Would like to see Bannan coming on earlier, probably for Heskey, as the game opens up.

Good time to play Everton but it's very hard to get enthused about anything AVFC related this season. Prob a 0-0.

Would like to see Ireland play instead of Heskey but doubt that's going to happen

For what it's worth my side

Given
Herd, Collins, Dunne, Warnock
Ireland, Petrov, Delph
NZogbia, Bent, Gabby

Too far away to judge I reckon. With transfers in and out a possibility at both clubs and the potential for injuries during international duty it's impossible to know how either will line up although they've had their customary shit start.

1-1. Cahill for them from a corner, Bent levels for us late on.

Heskey replaced by Bannan after Fellaini blatantly elbows Emule but the ref chooses to ignore it as he spends so much time falling over anyway. Bannan avoids Fellaini's continually flailing limbs as he's below the arc of the constant attempted decapitations, and sets up Bent for the equaliser

Everton can be a good team but only got a result against Blackburn thanks to a very dodgy penalty. Moyes' makes another slow start to a season and I think we'll win.

I think this is one of those games that will be a good barometer of the season ahead. Win and we should be comfortably top half. Lose and it could be a long season ahead.

FWIW I think Everton will struggle this season whereas Wolves will do better than expected. I think we'll sneak this one 1-0 or 2-1 to provide some early season optimism after the hysteria of the transfer window.  Either way I'd be happy with 4 pts from the next two games.

Hard to predict this one. Blackburn were given a 2 penalty chances and still couldn't beat them (although that says more about Blackburn). Everton are still a similar team to Villa, the only difference being, they don't want to sell their better players.

I hope a win, but they need a win at home after their opening day debacle so will push for it.
Title: Re: Everton vs Aston Villa pre-match thread
Post by: Merv on August 30, 2011, 04:27:19 PM
Have to say, Everton do look ordinary this season and they're traditionally slow starters anyway. If nothing else, we're looking hard to beat - they're pretty light up front, our defence seems solid again. And so... 0-0 (again) or 1-1.
Title: Re: Everton vs Aston Villa pre-match thread
Post by: VillanVillanVillan on August 30, 2011, 05:31:45 PM
Depends on the formation, and who starts. Same formation as we've been using, 0-0 draw. If we see some early Albrighton and/or Bannan/Ireland participation, I can see us getting a 1-0, 2-0 victory.

On another note, I think Gabby has done well this season so far, do you think we could play him and Bent together up front? Maybe have Agbonlahor play behind Bent?

Only difference between us and Everton is that their fans back their manager and blame the board for what happened in the transfer window. AV fans are in the dilemma of which of these to blame first.

as an Everton you have to be massively gutted right now. It's not the best round here, but they've done pretty much fuck all. It will be interesting to see where they stick Drenthe who is really a wing back playing on the left where arguably they have one of the best attacking full backs in the league. For me a very odd move by Moyes. Know nothing about the forward they acquired from Tigres. The fans are getting very restless up there and if we get into them early we can take all the points. Our first XI isn't bad, and once we figure out how to get them to work and move together we'll be ok. Defensively we'll be fine in this game. They've just moved out three attacking players. This is a manager who has played before with 0 forwards, and some thought McLeish was negative while at Blues.

I'm going for a 2-0 win with Bent back on the scoresheet.

It makes you wonder what morale will be like at Everton.

I think we'll be quite buoyed to be honest. The team I saw PaultheVillain post earlier had a nice balance about it.

I'm aware there has been much bed wetting, but I'm please with the two signings and think we may be up for a cheeky away win here. We'll be solid at the back, that's for sure (famous last words) and without Arteta, do they have the guile in the midfield?

I don't see Everton losing arteta as such a big blow for them in that they are use to playing without him recently. Great player but has spent a while injured. They still hve quality in Cahill and fellaini and will still be a hard team to break down. Even without a pot to piss in they can still pull in signings (granted on loan) that make you raise an eye brow and go hmmm ok. Stracqualursi and Drenthe are a gamble in that they're not proven in the English league but I think that's a good bit of business and can prove a real threat on the attack.
I'm going for a 1-1 draw. We may sneak a late winner if I'm being very optimistic.

Cahill picks up a fair few injuries aswell and I don't think he's scored a league goal since February so not the force of old.

I assume he's playing for Austrialia aswell so him or Fellani might get injured during the International break.

That sort of formation (Cahill with Fellaini behind) may work away from home, but when the onus is on you to attack you need a leader of the line type and/or good movement upfront, which with two midfielders you're  unikely to get.

Only because the pressure that Moyes is under and only because the team is under the same kind of pressure and the fans are making demands I have to go for a home win, also I would say that at some point the fairly positive start that McLiesh has made will at some point get tested, for me that will be Everton....

Hope we win, can't see it.

Please not another draw, lets at least show we aren't a born again B'ham City and let's at least go for it even at the risk of losing.

Please not another draw, lets at least show we aren't a born again B'ham City and let's at least go for it even at the risk of losing.
I actually think it will be the opposite of that and if we keep it 0-0 up until 60 minutes then there already restless fans will get on the teams back, they'll become nervous and we'll nick it around the 75 mark.

luke: Hope your right, and the longer it goes on without them taking the lead the more pressure they will be under to get the result and that will feed through from the fans, the more open spaces will appear on the park and we have the players and pace to take advantage of that.

Still think the very fear of that pressure will mean Moyes will set up hit team to come at us from the outset and at home, i still think this is a nailed on loss, unfortunately, otherwise i think Moyes could well quit....

Well I think we will nick this one. They are on a bigger downer than us at the moment. The new Fabregas is a huge loss for them. If we just manage to mark Tim Cahill from corners we should be O.K.
I'll go for Everton 1 Villa 2. ( Bent 46,88)

That was at Villa Park, we were unlucky not to win up there at Goodison.

On the basis that Hutton hasn't had a competitive game since last March, and Herd was man of the match last weekend, I'd keep Herd at right back. Jenas also won't be match fit. There's no need to rush them into an unbeaten team.

He played tonight and will again on Wednesday for Scotland.

Mcleish does not seem the type of manager where youth get a chance in my opinion.

I'm more than willing to give AM a chance. But if he continues to leave Bannan on the bench...

Glad they have not got Ateta, or as they seems to insist on calling him, Arteeeeta. Cahill seems to have been benched this season too oddly.

1-1 draw for me, they always scrap a result out of us up there. Charlie NZo to open his account, Hutton to play well and them to get a dodgy pen and score.

Have I already posted in this thread? Been open too long!

Huge game for Gabby. Jagielka has been off the boil for a while and I think Gabby will be better suited to playing up top than Bent ironically enough for this game.

Good chance Given may be out though even though he is playing for Ireland. Playing on a plastic pitch with a groin injury could be nasty.

think we might sneak it 1-0 and miss a penalty.

Given
Hutton, Collins, Dunne, Warnock
Jenas, Petrov , Delph
Nzogbia, Gabby, Ireland

After 2 games midweek, Petrov wont last the 90. We definitely need another body in there. 4 of the back 5 have been away all week so I dont think we will be as secure as usual. Especially if Given is out.
Strangely confident though, feel we are playing them at a good time. 2-1 to the Villa. Gabby with both.

Jagielka is having a mare at the moment and Gabby in the mood could destroy him. Lets hope the Heskey attacking midfielder experiment is over.

Even if he does tire, which I doubt he will tbh.. we've got cover for him on the bench. I wonder how Ireland must be feeling. First, Delph is heavily favored over him to open the season and now Bannan is in great form.

...............Bent
N'Zogbia  Bannan Gabby
.........Delph    Petrov
Nock Dunne Collin Hutton

I feel Bannan's distribution abilities will send N'zogbia and Gabby into the final third with a lot of pace. I want to see Jenas feature also, whether if it's because Bannan or Delph underperform or Stan gets tired. If Bent is unhealthy I would filter in Heskey and have him and Gabby alternating freely.

Yes, indeed though their fans perceived and very vocal injustice against any decision that goes against them on the pitch, more so than any other set of fans I know, makes it quite hard to maintain that sympathy and empathy...

If Heskey it staying in the side as he's 'doing well', then surely Delph's performances mean the same?  I think the team sheet tomorrow will be more interesting and create more debate than the game itself!

I think the same john

I would ideally like to see jenas and delph in behind Bannan but I've got more chance of a topless hand shandy off Lucy Pinder

Trust me - that's not all it's cracked up to be!

I think we may see Jenas in for Heskey, which I'd sorta be OK with.

0-0 or 1-1.  I'm not expecting a classic, probably a scrappy Bent effort and a Cahill header.

It's nailed onto be a draw or we'll see Baxter rip into us and they will go on and on about another star being born.

I could live with that

As long as ivanhoe isn't a starter

Prediction. A surprise routine 2-0 win with goals either side of half time from Bent, then Gabby on the break.

Guy's......Have to disagree on the draw, based on the fact we have 2 teams that are very capable of making some real errors all over the park, had this have been the Everton of a couple of seasons ago and with our new emphasis on defence or improved defence, yep I would say a draw is nailed on.

But........

Everton under pressure, got to make a fist of this, Villa need the victory, McLiesh knows he can't lose to a team in meltdown.

Much bigger Everton game than usual IMO.

I just have a feeling that petrov is going to be teachers pet and heskey will be used because he makes us hard to beat.

He'll only be teacher's pet through playing well, as there is no previous connection between him and AM, and if so shouldn't he be keeping his place anyway?

I think you're right about Heskey, but if and when we look to add some guile in sacrifice of the 'hard to beat' element, or when a someone like Bannan/Ireland makes themselves impossible to leave out, then things will change in that regard.

1-2 , surely jenas in for heskey which would be a positive move and i expect bent and collins to deliver the goals against an average everton team to gve their toffee nosed fans more to moan about.

This is where reality begins......

This is the most played fixture in top flight football in the history of the game........................

Villa narrowly have the edge in terms of victories, but, its very close.

Just picked this up but when these teams first met Jack the Ripper was inflicting carnage on the streets of Whitechapel

George Eastman patents 1st roll-film camera & registers "Kodak"

Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh cuts off his left ear

In England the first six Football League matches ever are played.

Sept 22nd 1888,  Villa bt Everton 2-1 in there first ever encounter.

So bring it on, none of this puffy top 4 namby pamby let see some football.

This is the shortest distance I have to travel for a Villa game - 9 miles.
Normally I am buzzing with excitement about this particular day - meeting up with old mates in and around Liverpool and later seeing some lads from Brum.
Got up today and having digested Old Ginger`s comments I am thinking "why the **** do I bother?
Hopefully our lot will be up for this as Everton are there for the taking.
However like many others on here the prediction is ..............0-0

It will be very interesting to see the starting 11, with the addition of Hutton and Jenas, and the form of little Bannan. Albrighton should start if Bent is not fit, with Gabby up front.
