Pat Heard just broke the news on Twitter.

Shocked - I didn't even know he was ill.
I have a great affection the 1988 promotion team; can't believe that two of them are dead before their time.
-
Christ. Only 44.
RIP Bernie. Condolences to his family.
-
So sad. RIP
-
87/88. Still my favourite season.
Thanks Bernie.
-
He only missed one league game in the season that got us back where we belong. RIP
-
Yipeeayey Bernie. Got a distant memory of you lashing one into the top corner vs the Blues in the Simod in '88. Hope it was you anyway. No bloody age. Condolences to yours. RIP.

Shocking news, I wasn't even aware he was unwell
Always gave his best for the cause and an integral part of the promotion campaign; RIP Bernie Gallacher
-
Just heard this from a mate, such a shame, and yes he did score a screamer past Blues in the cup. I remember that team under GT that got us up, he played his part, like they all did.
RIP Bernie and thanks.
-
That is a shock - 44 is far too young.
RIP
-

Wasn't around when Bernie was playing, but may he rest in peace.

RIP Bernie. You were never the most popular player but you always gave 100% and perhaps deserved more appreciation than you recieved.
-
RIP Bernie

Cult hero of mine, hence the username. Not the most talented but always gave his all. RIP Bernie
-
Very sad news. RIP
-
Only know of him from the often dubious mentions of his name on here but that is a very young age to go. Condolences to his family and friends.
-
Heartbreaking news.
I remember him from back in the day when we actually used to play the noses, he missed a penalty in a shootout at their place if I remember (preseason friendly probably)
44 years of age, is nothing these days and puts life into perspective.
-
RIP.....thanks for your service to this great club of ours.
-
Very sad news .I watched Bernie come up through the Youth and Reserve teams and the guy always gave everything he had to give. I spoke to him several times and he was a really nice guy.R I P Bernie.

It may be that the family don't want it publicised. You never know in such circumstances.

RIP

I seem to recall his last ever appearance being in my first ever visit to Villa Park, a 2-1 win over Coventry in September 1990, I certainly don't remember seeing him after that. From recollection Kevin Gallagher gave him a torrid time for half an hour after which he got his shit together and then marked him out of the game.
RIP.
-
Good send off for him .
