Title: Fulham v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Risso on August 07, 2011, 09:55:07 AM
First one of the season, and I think Leeg is away for a bit so apologies for the change in routine!

Anyway, I think it'll be a cagey 1-1 as we find our feet.

In an effort to be some bit positive for the start of the season in going for Fulham 1( AJ) Villa 2 (Bent, Zog.)

I refuse to be negative before a ball has been kicked. 3-1 Villa. Bent x2 and Gabby.

I'm being positive: Fulham 0 Villa 1.
Controversial penalty in the 97th minute. Bent.

We should be aiming for at least 7 points from our first three games. I'd take a point out of this though. I'll go for 1-1. Bent to put us 1-0 up, before they equalise late on.

Voted 1-1

Bent or Zog to score early in the first first half, then under siege most of the last half hour before conceding a late goal when Warnock gives away a stupid free kick.

1-1 would be a decent start to the season but i think we might nick it 1-2, if not i will settle for a draw.

Fulham 0 Villa 7.

Bent 23, 37, 42, Shaw 56, 61, Hampton, 83, Race 90+5.

Fulham 1-2 Villa.
Nzogbia & Gabby put us 2 up, then Sidwell for them as our old players always score against us.

1st win of the season and we look dead certs to win the league!

I think Fulham will snatch this one, I'm afraid, just by being 'match sharp' from their uefa games.

2-1 to them, Bent scoring for us.

Count me in as another one in the 1-1 club. Followed by two home wins and a nice seven points from the first three games.

1-0 to Fulham.

Fulham away is a tough match and as mentioned before they have the advantage of an early start so they may well start the season like a train.

what is mcleish's first side looking like?

Given
Young, Collins, Dunne, Warnock
Albrighton, Petrov, Makoun, Bannan/Ireland
------Nzogbia--------------------
--------Bent----------------------

Or will Nzogbia be wide and Ireland or Bannan more in the hole?

Starting Heskey would not be a positive move. Petrov/Makoun partnership is weak and would like to see Delph in there but folks here are saying his pre season form has been poor.

Why would anyone pick Dunne ahead of Clark? I think we probably will, just don't see the logic.

Dunne = fat, past it, trouble-maker.
Clark = athletic, good at football, best young defender in country

I've long said my favoured option was Clark paired with Cuellar or even better a new signing but I reckon the Chuckle brothers reign will persist. Lets hope that their form merits it.

I can see Clark getting a few games at left back or central midfield.

No N'Zogbia?

I'd be tempted to play something like that but with the Zog rather than Gabbs and maybe Bannan or Ireland in place of Stan. I do like the playing Clark as a DM idea.

I don't like the back four but it's not like we have the choice.

There are so many reasons to be concerned about this season, why do I HAVE to be positive if I genuinely don't feel that way.  I am concerned that our defence looks shabby, our creativity with Young and Downing gone is questionable and we are one or two injuries (Bent and Given) away from a real crisis.  I'm sorry, I just don't have a good feeling about this season.  I won't pretend otherwise.  Just to clarify, it won't stop me from purchasing club merchandise, spending a fortune on flying over for games and actually supporting my club.  Probably a lot of people banging on about "being positive" that actually put sod all into the club so as a supporter in every sense I reserve the right to feel the way I do.

What role is Gardner expected to fill?  I don't get to reserve games for obvious reasons and so I haven't really had a chance to see him play too much.  Is he a Petrov type player or is he more attacking?  Who would he replace in the side?

And you think that Gabby would be a hardworking wide midfielder if Warnock did have a nightmare?!  Blimey.  Gabby is a forward, who is mostly shite on the wing.  if you're additionally hoping that he'll provide a measure of defence in front of Warnock, you're in for a deeply disappointing afternoon.

Gabby either needs to play next to Bent, or not play at all.

At the risk of sounding like a raving mentallist, I'd consider playing Heskey left wing with N'Zogbia wide right. Leave Albrighton on the bench so we can bring him on near the end to run at tired legs. Heskey's extra height could come in useful when we are defending set pieces. Both Villa and McLeish's Small Heath failed miserably to contain Hangeland from corners/free kicks last season. Plus Heskey has played well in the pre-season games I've seen (although admittedly I've only seen two).

Why all the suggestions for playing Zoggy on the right and Hesky/Gabby on the left? Surely it makes sense to play them down the wings on their strongest foot. I know they can cut inside but wingers work better if going down the line to whip in a decent cross for Bent to thrive on.

I don't rate Gabby on either wing and wouldn't play him there. Heskey is never going to race down the wing and ping a cross in for bent. Better to have him on the left where he can hold the ball up, cut in to feed Bent and generally make a nuisance of himself. Whenever he's played wing in his career it's been on the left I think.

Not exactly a justification for playing either them on the left then, and all I've seen Heskey do on the wing is slow play down so much because he cant do anything with the ball and allows their defence to get back into position. Zoggy has got a great left foot so always an opportunity to have a shot from the right once he's cut inside, but think he'd be best utilised down the left wing. Surely it makes sense to play to Zoggys strengths rather than Heskey or Gabbys weaknesses.

Interesting, I expected a lot more predictions of Fulham wins. No one has even gone for them winning by more than one goal. They'll be more fit and fluid than us given their short summer break and the crowd will be well behind Muttley and his men.

I think we'll have a decent start to the season, once this game is over.

3-1 to Michael Jackson's favourite after-life team.

Some of the Zog's best form for Wigan came when he was on the right cutting in, a la Downing.

Not sure I'd be crazy about Gabby on the left again though.  Or Heskey, for that matter. Both might 'do a job' (to borrow a hackneyed phrase) on a short term basis, but that's about it.

Yeah no doubting Zog's ability on either wing to be honest and no doubt he'll continue to score a few from there, but if our other options on the left are completely useless then makes sense to use Zog on the left. In an ideal world Albrighton will regain his form coming down the right, Zog on the left and use Heskey/Gabby as subs/back up for Bent.

Dont think Delph has done anything to justify his place in the team, and come to think of it neither has Albrighton

Defense has been pretty tight so it picks itself

The real key is how Eck wants to play - go for the attack minded option then

                               Makoun         Petrov
            Gabby                   Ireland                       NZog

Defensive option

       Gabby        Makoun         Petrov      Bannon    NZog

I do feel fitness wise they will be a lot sharper than us

2-0 Fulham and Eck critisised 1st game for being too cautious!

Albrighton    Bannan     N'Zogbia

                   Bent

Subs: Guzan, Clark (if Collins fit), Petrov, Lichaj, Ireland, Agbonlahor, Gardner.

Beye goes on to the bench if Collins is unfit and Clark starts.

1-1, by the way.

I'd say Bannan deserves his place more than Albrighton, so I'd go N'Zogbia right and Bannan left, otherwise same as above, Ireland just shading Gabby in the hole due to being able to pick a pass far better.  Please no Heskey. 1-1, Bent.

I'll say 2-1 Fulham. Can see them flying out of the blocks as they're already half way through their season and I think we'll take a while to get going.

Sad to say but I'd take a point from there.

Nothing sad about wanting a point from Craven Cottage, they're bloody good at home.

I worry about the defence though. You know the season must be nearly underway when James Collins pulls up injured. He really is a liability with his ongoing injury woes. We really should have replaced him this summer.

I can see them being more prepared than us and winning 2 or 3 to 1.

I reckon the back 7 picks itself.

Then I'd play zog and bent if fit enough.

Less sure on the others. Would probably play heskey left and Ireland in the middle. Bannan to come on if we need more invention.

Sad to say but I'd take a point from there.

They finished above us last season and qualified for Europe. A point there would be a good one, especially as the're likely to be sharper than us from starting their season early.

All London Tuesday games have been. Decision on (Wednesday's) England game tomorrow. I would imagine we will know whether it's on by Friday.

If anyone's going by public transport and hasn't bought their tickets yet, I'd advise to wait till the day before doing so.

It's not so much police numbers as tomorrow and Wednesday would see large numbers of people leaving grounds in the dark at peak riot time. Saturday afternoon will be a different scenario.

Not that football issues are the biggest priority by any means at such times.  But if this game was called off -for whatever reason- I wouldn't be particularly distraught.

Felt at the time it was Sods Law that we get a team buzzing and out to impress a new manager -and who are probably a few weeks ahead of us fitness wise- first up.

Would much rather play them in Oct/ Nov, when they've maybe lost a bit of momentum and the novelty has worn off.

I'm not so sure its not politically motivated. There's obviously a fierce hatred among today's youth towards JJB Sports among others and the failure of sucessive governments to control the widespread institutionalised racisim in carpet shops obviously was the trigger in tottenham.

Probably.....

Premier League & Football League Statement

The Premier League and Football League are saddened by the recent incidents of civil unrest and the effect it is having on local communities.

We are in on-going discussions with our London-based clubs, the relevant police forces and statutory authorities, in regard to the staging of the coming weekend’s fixtures in the capital.

The Metropolitan Police has conveyed to us the dynamic nature of the current situation and with that in mind all parties will review the situation on Thursday and make a further public statement.

With the information currently available there is no reason to think any matches outside of London will be affected.

We are conscious of the need to keep fans informed of any developments and will, of course, keep them as up-to-date as possible through club, league and media channels.

I just cant go along with Petrov being an automatic choice. Apart from that Derby goal I am not sure I can remember him doing much else of significance.A solid holding midfielder sure, but I would much rather see Bannon / Makoun /Delph given his 'auto starting place'. Sorry, the man just does not do enough IMO and its well known he runs out of puff after 70 mins. Surely we have better options?

Over the past 2 seasons Petrov (appalling fitness aside) has been mediocre at best.

But as he is Club captain expect him to start the majority of games and for us to get steam rollered with him makoun and the barmy one in the middle

Who's going to tell him? ;)

Actually, I'd like to see us start with Delph and Bannan in midfield (Bannan the player at the top of the midfield triangle) as per my team posted earlier in the thread. I think a couple of the younger players will give us a bit of a buzz and zip. But I think AM will play safe, and we'll see Petrov and Heskey.

If we're staying as we are Petrov as captain is disappointing, it should be Delph and Makoun in the middle, but as Mcleish has said he wants to buy a midfield general, it's even scarier that Petrov will stay as captain as it means he'll be above both of Makoun and Delph in the pecking order which is a real shame.  Don't expect the kids to get much of a chance under Mcleish, Warnock over Clark, Heskey over Albrighton, Ireland over Bannan, Petrov over Delph seems to be the way we're going, and he signed a 35 year old keeper.

Leaving now to head down towards Earls Court and the hotel. First journey of the season is always special. I will be happy with a draw however this may turn out to be a  bad start for the fact that they are ahead in match practice and our line up is not settled.

I've held my tongue all summer, but now we're here, on the eve of a drubbing as we are ill equipped/prepared

0-3 loss, Given MOM

if that happens mate, then no one will say anything,
but if it doesnt and you turn out to be badly wrong, expect to be reading it again a few more times at about 5 oclock

to be fair mate, nothing would make me happier than being badly wrong

Afraid Ive got to agree with Lawro on this, hopefully in a sort of reverse-psychology, expect-the-worse sort of way. 2-1 to Muttley's boys. Where are people intending to drink before the game?

Greetings from sunny Cognac in France where I am en vacances

Got R5 so will be tuning in later but fear a loss here, 2-0 to Fulham, just can't see where our goals will come from apart from Bent. Perhaps this and a few other dodgy results might persuade the powers to be to strengthen....not that I want us to lose in any shape or form!

I hope so JP, keep forgetting we have got him to be honest! The sun has gone to my head evidently....

Feeling miffed as fulham is always one of my best away trips but I shall be there in spirit as I lounge by the pool with R5 on and the promise of MOTD later

Perfect scenario Fulham 0 - Villa 2 Bent - Nzogbia Would be great on several levels mainly a win and secondly my Dream Team ............

I know what you mean , the sun has gone to my head , even thou we have no sun here ..

I think the team , IF , they play to their potential and get their best days back , can beat most teams in the Prem including Fulham .  But of course Ireland might be useless , Warnock might act like a plonker etc etc etc but I am quietly confident AM can sort these out .

I think we will start the season ok , but If we can just get two good players in for when the injuries start happenning we would be alright for a 7th/8th place ..   but is the cheque book closed , it looks like it

It's one of these things, if our first team stays fit and is on form we can compete against most in the league. However that's a bit if. We still need a centre mid and a full back though.

yes and we dont want to go back to the days of MON , of playing the same 11 when they are out of form or clearly unfit.

Difficult one to call, much depends on the team selection and from what I've seen to date, there's a complete lack of creativity up front. Whilst not his biggest fan, I'd really like to see Bannan in the starting XI as he really has an eye for the pass. Ireland I don't believe is up to speed yet and Albrighton hasn't had the best of pre-seasons. Both could play a part coming off the bench.

I have a horrible feeling AM will start with Bent, N'Zogbia and Heskey. If that's the case, I just hope we're not too far behind before AM makes a few changes.

2-0 Villa. Have a great day all those going down there.

Think it will be a cagey season opener, 1-1 with the Zog opening the scoring early on.

I've gone for a draw
AM will not want to be beaten on his 1st day of the job(so to speak)
I foresee us effectively lining up with 1 upfront when we've not got the ball-5 in midfield
v dreary 1-1
I hope i'm wrong
I bet I'm not

1-0 I think we will be hearing the words Aston Villa nil quite often this season. We are just lucky there are a lot of poor to mediocre sides in the perm this season.

Mods, can you move BedsVillans post from the Match Thread on to here as we always lose when somebody posts too early on the Match thread.

Superstitious, me? You bet!

Now bloody Monty has done the same. Shit, we're going to get stuffed today.

I think we'll win on the basis I think Fulham are going to have a dodgy season. Rather than the facts that they're more settled than us and have had a couple of competitive games already - also N'Zogbia is our main (potentially only) creative force and he's not fully fit yet.

For anyone who's hoping to stream:

http://www.veetle.com/index.php/widget#59920FB700047344FAF2708ABD23A92F/true/default

That should be a good stream. EPSN USA but with UK commentary I think.

After downloading the 'widget veetle player' try and avoid the 'drive scanner' during installation (it'll ask you install it optionally). Looks a bit dodgy and isn't needed.

VILLA v Fulham: Given, Young, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Petrov, Delph, N'Zogbia, Heskey, Agbonlahor, Bent.

Subs: Guzan, Albrighton, Bannan, Clark, Delfouneso, Ireland, Makoun.

No Makoun  :-\

I reckon Gabby and Heskey off Bent. Stan and Fabulous Fabian in centre mid and N'Zogbia in the free role.

                   Given

   Young Collins Dunne Warnock

Agbolahor Petrov Delph N'Zogbia

             Heskey  Bent

or

                 Given

  Young Collins Dunne Warnock

  N'zogbia Petrov Delph Heskey

        Agbonlahor Bent

I'm not too thrilled with either of those, to be frank.

Aye, that could do it, although I'm not sure if N'Zogbia isn't better out on the wing in the same way as Ashley Young was.

Gotta love the new season!
