This, I feel, may cause some good constructive debate. Who indeed should don the captains armband for the Mighty Villa this season. Listening to words coming from AM it appears that our spending will soon be, more or less, over. So we know who we have got to choose from.
Sounds like Petrov will continue to wear the band for the Barclays Asia Trophy but that Big Eck has yet to decide who will ultimately have the honour of captaining the club.
Personally, I just don't know., and I think it's an important decision. I think Petrov has done a decent job but I don't see him being the first name on the team sheet any more and is he really a natural leader anyway? Maybe someone at the back? Given a possibility.
Would anyone give it to Scott Parker if he found his way to Villa Park?
-
DB. I like the way he comes across.
He's a professional, well spoken and more importantly.... says the right things.
-
Never liked strikers as captains.
I think Petrov should continue as captain, but as you say, he may not be an automatic first choice, so we need a strong deputy who is. This time last year Dunne would be a good shout, but his behaviour last season says not.
Who captained the youth side that's now coming through - was it Clark?
-
It'll probably be Petrov.
-
tough one as i dont see petrov being a regular starter ,dunne if back to his form of 2 yrs ago would be a candidate but hardly set an example last year-in all honesty we lack a decent captain and there is no outstanding canditate in the current squad.
-
We lack a captain and an out an out leader
Petrov should not be captain as IMO he should be on the bench at best.
Dunne - no because of how he took the piss last season
I'm struggling to think
-
Stephen Ireland's maturity and natural leadership qualities should put him at the front of the queue.
-
Petrov is a good club captain, and despite his assured first team slot probably coming to an end I do still think he should carry on in that job; he is well respected, popular and a good example to younger players.
-
Given?
-
Actually, maybe Luke Young would be a good choice?

no good as captain if he cant get in the team , luke a possibility but again injury prone and often not in the team-its a difficult one .
-

I think he was captain of Middlesbrough so has done the job before. Whether it's Luke or Petrov, we need someone who's going to be a regular starter for us.
-
Good first post lawman - welcome to the site!
I always felt the captain should be a dominant midfielder (oh for another Dennis Mortimer or aKevin Richardson, Andy Townsend) or central defender (Nicholl, Laursen, Southgate). I think it's been said before we don't have enough leaders in the side and for all his limitations I think we'll miss NRC in that aspect. Unless we sign Parker I think Stan will keep the armband as I think he'll get plenty of starts but will be regularly substituted towards the end of games.

This.
-
As we are, Petrov, he's a decent captain and a leader and there's no other suitable candidate. If we somehow secure Parker's services then he would be the obvious choice. A natural born leader.
-
I think Ciaran Clark has the definite potential to captain villa one day. I also think that the captain should sit centrally in the park. CM or CB. With what we've got it's bound to be Petrov, and I don't think that's good enough.
Despite resale value, we should get Parker. Clark would learn a lot from him.
Or loan back Milner!!!!
-
If as i keep reading everybody has a clean slate, then i think it should be one of Young.Dunne and Collins. I would go for Dunne myself as he hardly ever misses a match while the other two are a bit injury prone.

on that basis of a clean slate -id agree with dunne.
-
Might be an unpopular choice but if McLeish can get Dunne fired up then I'd opt for him, think he'd respond well to being given the role, but I've opted for Dunne as no real leaders within the squad.
-
I wonder if Delph would get any consideration if he becomes a first team regular this season? Seems like a confident lad that could lead by example, and might add something extra to his game with a bit of a sense of responsibility.

Contary to popular belief there was never a Seaman Stains or Roger the Cabin Boy in Pugwash
-------------------------------------------------------
here is a persistent urban legend, repeated by the now-defunct UK newspaper the Sunday Correspondent, which ascribes sexually suggestive names – such as Master Bates, Seaman Staines, and Roger the Cabin Boy (meaning to have sex with) – to Captain Pugwash's characters, and indicating that the captain's name was a slang Australian term for oral sex. John Ryan successfully sued both the Sunday Correspondent and The Guardian newspapers in 1991 for printing this legend as fact.[2]

Petrov when he's on the field, Collins when he isn't. If Clark becomes a regular maybe him next season.
-
Wow US where did that come from. It was like a little secret you have been desperate to tell someone .......Stick with Petrov. There are no outstanding candidates and the young lads respect him so no need for change. If he is not playing give it to Dunne ........
-
How about Given?
-
Dare I say it? Dunne if he gets his weight off and his head in the right place
-
Given isnt a bad shout Dave but im not a fan of keepers being captain as you can't always talk to the outfield lads as easy. I don't like strikers as captains either as they aren't always aware of whats going on
-

I agree. Putting all the animosity from last year aside. He is the outstanding candidate.
Given would be ok. I just personally only like central midfielders or centre halfs as captains.
-
Dunne would have been an obvious and good choice 12 months ago, so do we rewind the clock and give it to him or base or decision on what has happened in the last year?
I said in another thread that I'd start with Petrov and Makoun in CM, but can see Delph being slowly phased in over the season in place of Stan. So I don't think it's an immediate problem and hopefully some leaders will emerge, and/or Dunne convinces everyone he's put 10/11 behind him, by the time Stan is fully replaced as a starter.
-
Giving Dunne the responsibility might help him get his act together and get him back to his best.

agreed with given as 2nd option -petrov wont start often enough in my view to be captain and as said above dunne may respond well to the responsibility.

very good point
-
Petrov with Dunne as vice.

Could use the same argument for Ireland.
-
Seamus is vastly experienced, a model pro, and certain to play if fit.
I'd give it him.
-
Give it to fat boy slim dunne
-
Dunne would be my choice.
-
Dunne would be my choice.
As catering consultant, maybe.
The only way that ****** should wear the armband is if every other Villa player on the pitch is mysteriously stuck by lightning.
-
If Collins could consistently produce the performance that he put in at home to Man City last season then he'd be an obvious choice for Captain.
As it stands he may well be the fall-guy shoul dwe able to muster enough loose-change to put in a bid for Dann. Shame really as Collins has probably got about 6 years left in him and has all the tools to be a top CB and leader, just seems to lack the necessary concentration at times. A kind-of, 'Ginger Zat Knight' if you will.
-
Fully agree with you, other than the Zat Knight comparisons - I think he's a much better player.
-

Except Ireland has no experience as captain and does not come across as a potential leader.

Can we put you down as a 'maybe'?
