There seems to be a pattern developing here at I don't think have addressed it.
Gareth Barry... starts to play for England regulary then leaves the club.
James Milner... starts to play for England regulary then leaves the club.
Ashley Young... starts to play for England regulary then leaves the club.
Stewart Downing... starts to play for England regulary then leaves the club.
Who's next?
It seems this club needs a new transfer policy, because if they've learnt anything they must now realise once all these players start playing for England, all these clubs are in for our best English players.
We need a new solution, don't bother signing the likes of Downing or Milner because once they get in that England team they'll be off quicker than Usain Bolt. Buy foreign instead. It's the new way forward because having all good English players only means we'll lose them.
The news today was the traw that broke the camels back. Felt like I need to say something.
-
Ban all Villa players from international football. Problem solved.
-
Albrighton next maybe but not for a couple of years?
-
Two words..... Paul Scholes.
-
Two words..... Paul Scholes.
we wont be signing him he's retired

I would like to think Marc is Villa through and through... but then again, that's what Craig Gardner said!
-

He got a lot of stick from some of our fans for what he said but the OP is basically saying the same thing. I don't know whether or not to be pleased when our players get called up, it seems to bite us on the arse every time, as the OP says.
-
Darren Bent next?
-
Its obviously Bent next. He's not exactly known for sticking around too long.
-
Darren Bent next?
I'd imagine so, unless we show some actual ambition.
-
Any player we allow to get into the last 2 years of their contract and plays for England regularly will be next.
-
There is one exception to this. The ever prolific Emile Heskey.
-
Players have ambition. Maybe Villa should get some.

I agree, it actually blows my mind that the board still haven't addressed this problem at all. I really do question if they've learnt anything from this.
I just feel completely alienated by the board. At least when O'Neill was around he would treat his best players like his children.

I don't think it's ambition we lack, I think it's more a case of the board being inexperienced when it comes to English football and not knowing how best to act on their ambition. Randy is a businessman and has the clubs interest at heart but we are not Man City, I think we need to employ a DOF to give the board some guidance.
-
I actually wish we could be the new Man City, it'd be so much fun.

The Liverpool board has even less experience of English football. However, unlike Randy, they do have experience of running a successful sports team that annually challenges for the title.
It would have been great if John Henry had gone after Villa instead of Liverpool

I See another pattern
Gareth Barry... starts every game for Villa becomes England regular then leaves Villa & sits on bench for club and country.
James Milner... starts every game for Villa becomes England regular then leaves Villa & sits on bench for club and country.

^^^ I agree.
Randy has no experience owning a successful team, unlike Henry Newman who knows what it takes for a team to win and be successful.
I know American Football and Football are two different sports, both on the field and off the field but atleast knowing what it takes to win in any sport is priceless.
-
I just think footballers today are mercenaries apart from a select few it really annoys me when they have only been hear five minutes then they want to move they I would also be happy if our players don't become regular England internationals.
-
I reckon they go away with England mixing with the likes of Rooney, Gerrard, Terry, Ferdinand all on £150k + a week
And they think why am i on £50k-60k a week when i could get £100k + Also, they obviously get "tapped" up by the other players, like Gerrard when the scousers were after Barry.
Paul Scholes was right when he said that the players play for England to further their career.
-
It's like Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple and Columbo have got together and started a thread.
-
Or Lieutenant Frank Drebin.
-
What we now need is a Baldrick, who has "a cunning plan".
-
nothing new about it
as a lad I was broken hearted when Andy Gray left for Wolves (ok he was a Scotland international)
shortly after we won the league with no regular internationals
not long after that we were selling Gibson to Man U then Sid, Rideout and Platt to Italy and there's others I can't remember ?
we need to get back on the straight & narrow financially first after MON blew all that money
and ban Capello from VP ;)
-
Or Lieutenant Frank Drebin.
"Surely you cannot be serious?"
" Yes I am and don`t call me Shirley"
:)
-
Maybe if they had all stuck around we'd be going for the title

The most important commodity in football these days is money and that's what we lack.

In fairness though, that statement could have been made by a fan of most clubs outside of Manchester, Liverpool and West London.

He has taken over a team that can spend a lot more money and still balance the books.

Knowing how to sign a cheque is more useful than any of that guff.

MON, for all his faults and I was a harsh critic of his, really was the driving force at villa in those years we flirted with top four. Whatever you say about the man, he was firmly in charge and you always felt we were going in the right general direction.
The board have really let things slide since MON's walk out. Where is the sense of direction? Where is the sense anybody's in control? Where is the positive energy?

Without wanting to be glib, when the dictator in a dictatorship disappears, a power vacuum is left. O'Neill, for his sins, was a good lightning conductor for most negativity aimed at the club. It was only after his departure that the media's negativity and the ire of the fans had to find a new outlet.
-
As I said, I wasn't an MON fan but I have more sympathy with him now than I had 11 months ago. Also, it was easier being a villa fan when he was there so in time we probably will all look back with rose tinted glasses.

Kendrick has just tweeted we have bid £10m for N'Zogbia and waiting for a response from Wigan. At least he's never going to play for England! :)

Very true. He'll probably get his head turned while playing for France by Arsenal players instead.
-
i can see a pattern developing
its not the 1980's and we are not a big club anymore
hence any good players we have get bought by the bigger clubs
-

I would have preferred it if we had bid before we sold Downing. Methinks the price might have gone up a bit.
-
Since i have been watching the villa it has always been the same whenever a villa player starts to play for England. Hitchens,Cowans,Hodge,Southgate and Platt all decided villa were not big enough for them
-
Yes a pattern is clear, but so too is Malcolm's pattern of players going to bigger clubs, [and Middlesboro], becoming benchwarmers or losing form, and no longer being regular England first team. Certainly Barry and Milner have suffered huge for loss since accepting the Arab shilling . Milner needs a move or he will not figure in next years Euro failure, loan for a season to VP? Downing has had a whole season fit, so is due a long injury. Ashley, like Dwight, deserves his time in the sun and should do well.

Was that Clive bloke who knew how to win at rugby priceless at Southampton?
