Title: Reaction to ex players returning to VP.
Post by: Holtenderinthesky on July 14, 2011, 12:03:03 PM
In light of the imminent transfer from the Villa of the ex Boro player, I was pondering how our ex players have been received at Villa Park over the years.  We've had the likes of Yorke, Southgate, Barry and even Vassell move away under provocative circumstances and I'd like to gauge exactly how our latest deserter will fit in with the boo boys.   I personally feel worse about this one than any of the aforementioned due to his totally arrogant and classless attitude in forcing a move after 1 good season.  The more I think about Downing, the more respect I have for Ashley Young.  We all knew Ash was leaving, but at least he did it in the correct manner.  Is Downing going to be the most hated ex-Villain in recent memory or are there worse examples?

Downing deserves to be reminded of the total disrespect he's shown to AVFC

Ifyou take Gareth Barry (Who ?) out of the subject then yes, The likes of Milner and Young everyone knew whaty was happening with them but they got on with playing up until the last minute. Fair play to them. The likes of Barry and Stewart "came on a crutch" Downing are better off else where IMO as players like that dont deserve to be linked with the claret and blue army.

This is how he should always be referred to in the Villa history books.

I have no problem with Ashley Young, he gave us good service and went for a good fee to the champions. Downing however gave us no loyalty and has left to a team not even in Europe, albeit for a good fee. He has treated us with no respect.

I think Downing will be in for hell on Earth at ours next season.

A nice treat if you sit in the Trinity and Witton Lane.

Have no beef with Ashley, always gave his all and joined one of the biggest clubs in the world.
No hard feeling towards Milner either.

Ba££y remains a cocksucker.

The only thing setting Downing apart from Hodge is that he did not show us total disrespect on the field of play. For that reason alone he is not at Hodge level.

Barry and Young gave good service to the club, Milner too who played his best for us up to the very last kick.

Downing says one thing and two weeks later says completely the opposite.  He is nothing but a weak, dis-loyal, lilly livered, spineless excuse of a person.  No sooner than the plaster has come off he wants out.  I wish him nothing but ill and that goes for his new team too.

Agree with a lot of that, barring Barry. He'd been angling for a move for years (remember the pompey / spurs links?), so fuck him.

See, I've mellowed to Barry. At least we had 9 years out of him, but I genuinely feel thart Villa are and will always be his Club, despite signing for Man City (for whatever reasons, even misguided)

However  Downing, despite having a great surname, is Hodge reincarnated

I'll never forgive Yorke for his treatment of Villa.  We spotted him, gave him his chance, he grew up with us and just, just as we were putting together a very decent side, he jumps ship.  If he had stuck with us we would have had one helluva forward line.  I think he owed us some loyalty at a key point in the  club's recent history.  Ditto Barry: his actions were to be the first signs of cracks in the Lerner Dream.  Both players, who had been with us since they were kids, let us down at very key points.  When push came to shove, they owed the club and its fans some loyalty.  Horrible.

Downing.  I feel no attachment to him as a player and rate him as a good footballer but I'm not disappointed at all in us selling him - we can replace with better.  Simply for that duplicitous u-turn, though, he deserves all the stick in the world.  It's about time supporters showed today's footballers and their agents just what they think of them.  If he has the bottle to be at Villa Park when we next face Liverpool he will deserve everything thrown his way...and I'll tell you what, I reckon we'll give them a hammering.

TBF Spurs sold Carrick, Berbatov, Bent and Defoe (who HR re-signed) and managed to get into the CL.  It can be a good business plan to buy players for 10 mil and sell them for 20 but only if the funds are re-invested into the team.

The big difference with Platt retuning was that he'd spent a while in Italy before coming back.  It's a lot easier to accept the loss of a player if he isn't being sold to your rivals.

Downing has no spine and no balls.
Signed with a broken leg, we have waited patiently for one good season, then he runs off as fast as his little legs will carry him as soon as the opportunity arises.
I would just love someone to have the courage to tell one of these Billy Big Timers that they signed a contract and they will stay until the end of it even though we would lose millions....wouldn't it be refreshing?
Commercial madness I know but whoever does it (perhaps Levy)? would have my utmost admiration.

Totally agree.
Gareth Barry gave us over 10 seasons, and Ash went about his final 6 months in a perfect way.
James Milner? I'm actually not to sure he even wanted to go. The reason he was sold was because MON over spent.
I might be shooting wide of the mark on that, but it's my opinion.
Downing owed Villa for the faith and loyalty we showed him when we signed him. That's why he'll be the first ex-Villa player that I'll openly boo on his return.

Stewie, or Dirty D as I now refer to him, will get a terrible reaction.

Yorkie, Barry, Milner etc served the club well (despite what we may think of them). We took a gamble on Dirty D, gave him a chance to prove himself a top player and he fecked off the first chance he got. Pr1ck.

Sadly we were bigger then than we are now. Partly due to the failure on our part to kick on at the right times but the game has changed a lot too and we probably are victims of that.  Who would have thought ten or fifteen years ago that clubs like Chelsea and Man City would end up having so much money to throw about.

Villa are going through a rough period with many awkward questions hanging int he air but to me they will always be the greatest club in the world.

It always makes it more entertaining if there's a pantomime villain you can direct all of your stick at. Notably, Joey Barton got it in the neck when we beat Newcastle, and didn't Terry get a load of verbals last October or whenever it was over something or other? You find out how weak a player actually is if they let that kind of stuff affect their performance. Terry didn't, really. Barton did. I expect Downing to follow Barton's example.

I said in another thread, Downing is a tosser and his legacy with Villa is of Hodge proportions.

way before he joined us I always thought the guy was an asshole especially when I read some article about how he was a part time Ibiza DJ and that he referred to DJing as a 'mental challenge'.

tosser.

When he used to play for Boro and the odd game for England i honestly used to wonder how.Was a fairy before Petrov nobbled him ,that injury has just made him pull out of any 50 50 tackle.I certainly am not sorry to see him go,we wont miss him half as much as we will the likes of Young and like we did Milner.

I don't doubt Downing will be booed relentlessly on his return.
