Title: Friedel Compilation
Post by: Chipsticks on June 27, 2011, 07:51:27 PM
Nice compilation of Friedel's saves last season if anyone fancies it.

Makes me a wee bit worried about the defence mind.

Fantastic. Best keeper we've had for years. I voted for him for player of the year. He and Bent kept us up no one else.

What is concerning, is the amount he had to make, and also, he is going to be difficult to replace

Why isn't there a compilation of the amount of set pieces we conceded from because he never left his line.

He was a good solid keeper for us, but I totally agree with the decision not to offer him more than 12 months.

A lot of keepers look like world beaters on show reels. Brad did well at times last season, but was also very fragile at others, and many wanted a younger man brought in around Jan. Good signing for the money and service though realistically, but time to move on.

That one against Bolton from the free kick that went down to his left was top drawer!

I agree.   Equally concerning was the God awful music accompanying the video - which to compound matters was only coming out of one speaker.

Did he ever save a Penalty for us?

The one from the Arsenal header was the best one IMO.

Some cracking saves in there hope we can replace him soon.

I can't remember one. He's a very effective shot-stopper and it was great to see all the saves and blocks in this video, but he doesn't command his area and, as Shrek says, is vulnerable at set pieces. I'm pleased we signed him, but he's now past his best and I think this is the right time for him to go.

Ok, simple explanation why I thought he was a liability last year.

watch it again and pay attention to where the ball goes after his saves.

Very much agree....it seems to be a thing with our keepers, Guzan is just as bad.

Will miss big Brad though, he's a was a good servant.

As an ex keeper myself i agree there are some excellent shot stopping saves and his positional sense was as good as you would expect from his experience.

But

as Paul e mentioned a lot of his heroic saves actually put the defense under even more pressure due to palming / pushing shots back into the danger zone rather than away from goal - might seem pedantic but these are basics learnt very early by keepers. Also his command of the 6 yard box for high balls was as poor as i have ever seen for a such a big guy

That's what I was thinking ... how many of those "saves" turned into "goals" two seconds after the clip ended?

Can't believe he's gone to Spurs at 40...probably can't believe his luck. Would be more at home at a lower level or on his sofa at this stage.

He made some good saves, his attitude was spot-on (the 20 years he's been in the game I'm sure he knows how to see through the bullshit that goes on in the modern game).

The ''parrying shots back to where they came from and keeping the defence under pressure'' thing is the sole reason why I won't really miss him. A terrible habit for such an experienced goalie. Not good on judging when to come off his line either.

Yep two that spring to mind were the Chelsea 3rd goal Terry scored which he palmed straight back into the 6 yard box and also Fulham at home when he did the same thing.

Good keeper but right time to let him go I think.

Cahill's goal in the 3-2 defeat against bolton was another he palmed straight back the opposition as well.  There's a few more as well, I can remember about 9-10 that I thought he messed up on last year that led to goals, and that's not including goals that came from crosses that he should have come for.

He was a great goalkeeper for a couple of years but last year was a season to long and I can't beleive he's got a 2 year contract with anyone on the back of it.
