Title: 2011 Women's World Cup
Post by: cdbearsfan on June 26, 2011, 02:19:38 PM
Started 17 minutes ago. I'll give it a go. Decent standard so far. France on top against Nigeria... hoping the Super Falcons (Nigeria) can cause an upset.

Will be happy if anyone other than Germany or USA win the cup. It's boring if the same teams keep winning all the time.

It's on Eurosport by the way.

I think I've just seen The Nigerian Female Harewood.

Shocking miss. Best chance of the game so far.

2-0 to the Jermans at half time, Canada can't do much in the last third.

One-nil to England, header from a corner. Williams. Not such a bad day for people called Williams after all.

One-one. Good long-range hit but the keeper should've done better.

No, I've done my best, googled it and everything and I still can't think of a decent Pitcairn pun.
Over to you H&Vers.

The coverage of the daytime matches seems to have been bumped to make way for the French Drug-Taking Championship.

Surely Sky, Channel 5 or ITV4 could've shown it if Eurosport can't be arsed?

It is a pity that the women's game still isn't high profile enough to get decent coverage. The games I've watched so far have been okay. Some classic comedy goalkeeping aside of course.

Just like watching the Villa. 1-0 up, holding on for dear life then conceding in the dying moments.

In fairness, it would've been a travesty if France hadn't at least got to extra time. They've been the better side. England look knackered and just need to hold on and hope to sneak through on penalties. Hopefully they've never watched the men in a shoot-out!

Apparently the pain of landing on your boobs is similar to you attaching your balls to your chest and diving on them.

Wouldn't they land on their side (the keepers, I mean, not the boobs)?  Anyway, I take your point.  Kind of puts them at a disadvantage when it come to saving penalties, so I guess she did well to get the first one.

Big Sam says it best -

Watching the women's football. I do hope it's a kicking match. There's few things sexier than seeing lasses kick the shit out of each other.

Number 14 for France is a corker. I'd love to get her at West Ham. I'd also love to rub Wintergreen Ointment deep into her sumptuous thighs.

Was once offered a job managing a woman's football team. I gave them my list of demands and they threatened to go to the police. Queers.

France deserved to go through but it was a shame we didn't hold on, we were the walking wounded at the end.

Quote

If Hope Powell is soon to step down after 13 years as coach of the England women's side, she has delivered quite a parting shot. After the defeat to France on penalties in the World Cup quarter-finals she accused some of her squad of "cowardice" for failing to volunteer to take a spot-kick.

Three of the back four stepped up in the shoot-out, with the 22-year-old left-back Claire Rafferty, who had been brought off the bench to make her World Cup debut 10 minutes from the end of the initial 90, and the central defender Faye White, the captain, in what may well have been her last game in an England shirt, missing the fourth and fifth attempts from the spot to send France through to the semi-finals.

"Three times I had to ask [for volunteers] before anyone stepped forward," said Powell. "'Where are you?' I was thinking, and then a young kid is the first to put her hand up. And Kelly Smith was dying on her feet but she stepped up and took one. You've got to want to take a penalty, but other players should have come forward and they didn't. That's weak, it's cowardice."

Superb Final.

USA led with ten minutes to go when Japan equalised.

The Great Satanettes then led again with two minutes of extra-time to play when when the Japaneses snatched another leveller.

2-2, Japan win 3-1 on penalties. Much better than the men's final last year.

A deserved win for the Japan ladies.

Especially as the Yanks had a man playing at number 20.
