3 part special - Will be discussing the title triumph, missing the EC final and Alec McCleish.

Ron Saunders was our guest this afternoon. Watch out for our three-part special with him on AVTV next week. #avfc http://twitpic.com/5f6t2o

Is it free yet, or do you have to wait for your 'welcome pack' with the season card?

There is some psychological game going on here..Ron back soliloquising on the lost years and McL becomes the realisation of his potential when lost in the wilderness.
Desperately trying to patch over the abyss that separates the two clubs and the wounded fans disappointment.
It will all go well if we just sit back and imagine the last 30 years never happened.
It is just a hearts and minds game now on Randy's part and the yanks are great at that..Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan..the Alamo.

So they didn't come round and ask you who they should appoint.
And we haven't been a cross between Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid since 1981.
Any chance you might give it a rest now?
-
I refuse to be happy with a kick up the arse.
I refuse to fall for some nostalgic trip down memory lane designed to appease the long suffering fanbase.
Do we deserve what we have been given or been given what we deserve?
Give what a rest?
I will not be happy until we come out of the shadows and put one across the Liverpool's and Man U and Real Madrid's of this world..again!
Is this an open forum for freedom of expression or a closed world of courtiers nuzzling up to the naked king?
Up the Villa! ..We will always be The Villa..we are more important than those who see fit to dictate to us for our greater good. We always will be because without us they are nothing! I will stop before I get banned for being a lifetime fan!
-
What do we deserve? I'd love to know what's so special about the Villa that we in some way 'deserve' better than we get. We don't, no club does. We are what we are. You can talk about the past thirty years all you like but how many trophies did we win in that time? How many in the previous thirty? The thirty before that? How many times have you ever been asked who should be the manager? How many times has it happened at any other club?
And please stop the "You're going to ban me because I'm really independent and you're all part of the system" nonsense. We've had it before, it was childish then, and it's not improved.
-
Sense of humour failure I think..we get what we deserve then and make it a crime to want more.
Stalin was famous for his wicked smile.
I want More than I seem to getting; a lot more
We have to make do with what we are handed out then...Long live the King of franchised diluted shinola.
A seachange has taken place here.. We are a different entity now.
Villa the new home of neo-revivalist protestant asperationism..
the New Church of the second awakening of elvis the unconverted.
Hallelujah Lord..Hallelujah!..I's bin saved Lord.. I see it all clearly now like the blighted Damascene..take me to the river Lord; wash a me down!!
Up the Villa.

He looks fit and well for 78 years.

That's what I thought. Bloody delighted to him looking so good. Made my day.
-
What a great team he had and what an acheivment with so few players, a true legend glad he looks so well.
-
A couple of years ago he was at Villa Park (he went a few times - not sure he does now) and got talking to Randy's son who told him that he played himself. A few days later he receives a list of instructions from Mr Saunders on how to train properly.

I like Brian's bizarre comparison of Randy Lerner with Stalin.
Looking forward to Martin O'Neill getting an ice pick that makes his ears burn.

That is bloody ace. Think how you'd feel if a legendary football manager dropped you a few tips in the mail or in person? He better follow them. If it was good enough for Gary Shaw it should be good enough for Lerner Jr.

Did it involve running up and down a lot of hills.
Seriously - the point of this thread was the sheer and unexpected thrill that at last we will see and hear Ron speak - a lot of us old ones never thought we would see the day. If Mr Taylor thinks this is just part of some club plot to appease us then he is not very familiar with the person that is Ron Saunders, I would suggest, and it frankly diminishes him to suggest that, after all these years of silence,he could be hoodwinked like this.
-
Agreed. Looking forward to this as someone too young to remember Ron at the time.
-
That picture doesn't half warm the heart. Wow indeed. Takes me right back to the days of Rimmer, Swain, Evans.....
D'you wanna bet against us? Get in!
-
If Mr. Saunders, is the same Mr. Saunders that built the three best teams Villa teams I've ever seen. Then it will be worth watching. I know of one ex player who is still in awe of him.

Absolutely. The idea that the club is doing this in order to divert attention from other matters is taking cynicism to a plainly ridiculous level. Its called good PR, its giving supporters something they will be interested in and find enjoyable. However, as with almost everything that happens in life there is always someone who is willing to turn round and see some deep sinister motive and hidden agenda being operated. Indeed, many probably think Mr Woodall and his moderator cronies were instructed by the club to set up this site. Then gradually introduce sections like memories, off topic, and time wasters etc. Why ? As a way of distracting the attention of the supporter masses from the selling of players, season ticket increases, and the hidden agenda to take every last penny we have via shirt sales etc. Yes, Brian is right...there should have been a supporters referendum to pick our managers, the coaching staff, match day stewards, and the team put out on the pitch each week.
-
Looking well isn't he. Can't wait to see this.
-
What a great team he had and what an acheivment with so few players, a true legend glad he looks so well.
It wasn't about the final prize that was the joy of Saunders, it was the journey he took us on.

Exactly

Yay finally worked it out. Here he is - and hes smiling!! Looks well.

What a fantastic photo.
-
Looks great doesn't he? I nearly bowed!
-
He looks fit and well for 78 years.
It's all about the Humanoids Primarily, and then the Prawns tbf
-
Christ he's beaming.
Never seen a pic of him with a smile that big.....or a smile.
That man will still be a legend in a hundred years time.

Rightly so.
-
Ron?; I bow down too.
He created something out of a lot less.
Let's see it again. The crowd believe in that sort of history, and I do too.
The Ron got shafted for all his efforts
We are left footers now, restoration style. That is where the difference lies!
-
Can't wait to see him on AVTV.

I thought it was gregnash talking about somebody who thinks O'Neill's a good manager.
Until I read 'Up The Villa', obviously.
-
What a great opportunity for me to waffle about my forum name, when (apparently) at the end of the match Villa 0 Ipswich 2 (Champions season) and Eric Gates scored both goals. Eric was laughing when he walked off.
Ron: I hope your laughing at the end of the season Eric cos its coming here!
I was there that night and had to go back and work nights pondering how we had probably lost the league. How wrong eh.

Brian, I dont doubt your love for AVFC and I'm sure you're a decent human being and that your friends and family love you but whenever I read your posts I get the urge to open my veins in a warm bath. Lighten up mate, it's a game

The full Ron Saunders I'm sure he will give AVTV 110%!

I have never said a detrimental word against Ron Saunders. He was always the one who got the bad deal that is all.
Football is not about being nice other than when you win a lot of games.
We have just undergone an enforced conversion where our noses have been rubbed in it and now we are expected to say all is lovely in the garden and everything smells of roses.
I know what it smells like to me but then I hope it helps the roses grow.
We are due a radical shift of attitude and outlook. I want it to be good but they are looking at it in a new way.
Maybe it is Randy teaching all those anti-houllier miseries a lesson?
It feels life a more fundamental shift myself.
They made the decision and will live by it.
They had better be right or there will be fireworks.
I ain't been burned as heretic here.

The board didn't ask him who he wanted as manager. Therefore everything the club ever does from now on will be shit. Villa's present is terrible, the future is doomed and if we mention the past it is all an elaborate ploy to smuggle nuclear arms/animal organs/illegal immigrants into Bodymoor Heath while we are all distracted by the Regime Puppet Ron Saunders.
If you can't see it, you're part of the problem.
-
Hysterical..Great stuff..couldn't have put it better myself cd..
Why should any fan have a say in running the club. It ain't ours we only pay for it.
We have what we deserve in the new regime.
We will see major changes as a consequence of the installing of McLeish.
It is a minor thing transhipping from the other lot on other side of town.
I do not like the vision I see for my beloved Villa..
Average mediocrity will be maintained with the odd highlight to please the deluded multitude.
The fans have a right to criticise as they see fit and I see that criticism increasing again..not that the management will give a monkey's about that unless the revenue slips a bit.
European Cup's I am glad I was around once before when we did it.
I'll be the first to applaud if we get anywhere near it again.
Now for the clearout and the risorgimento.
-
Lots of fans have had a say in running the club. More than at any other club in the country.
Explain why you think Villa should be the only club in the World (other than Ebbsfleet) where the fans pick the manager?
-
Realistically the fans will never pick a manager. They can only make their feelings known. Villa is a business and we are the one's that buy into it.
We chose/have been allotted the one who rose to the challenge set by management and their terms and conditions bounded by the financial state of the club funds.
I see a very frosty and cold attitude coming from on high.
I can't do anything bar use my voice to express my concerns.
Keep quiet and they will continue to abuse our undoubted loyalties.
I aam a nobody and have been so for years..other than being a Villa fan and in terms I of that I am a nobody again bar being able to express an opinion.
I don't like what they have put in front of us.
The way things are in football he could get the sack before the season satsrts but in reality he won't and could be around for years playing a sort of football that suffices without excelling and allows us to see the sort of player from other teams we can only dream of having on our side.
Build 'em up from the youth team and sell them on.
I rememeber the arguent last year that we were never a selling club and never will be. Roll on next tirade.
-
Explain "how they abused our undoubted loyalties"? Ticket prices generally better than elsewhere in the league, loads of money spent on players despite declining attendances... including smashing the transfer record as recently as January, rebuilding the Holte Pub, delivering some of the best training facilities in Europe, welcoming our greatest ever manager Ron Saunders back into the fold, overseeing the development of one of the best youth sides in the country, and so on.
Did they "abuse our undoubted loyalties" by err... not consulting you on who the manager should be? You seem incapable of listing any other faults they've got.
-
I do not doubt they have injected money into the club and general facilities. It makes it a better place to go to. Youth team has always produced the goods from way back before Randy's arrival.
We are looking at a few years of dearth in the wilderness while he gets that investment back.
Ashley Young is only the beginning of the exodus.
I will deliberate when I see who we replace him and others who will undoubtedly go, with.
Randy runs the whole kit and caboodle and we pay him for doing so. He better have some success or the Holte pub will be as forlorn a place when saturday comes round as it is on any given weekday evening.
Randy is of the Puritan ethic and the Villa were always dashing Caviliers...
I'm not sure what sort of plough he'll have us pulling next...but I can see the shires being groomed right now.
-
Wow, can I have some of whatever it is you're on, Brian?

Have you considered Prozac?

Time will tell..CD. Time will tell.
I want to think the best for the future.
I do not wish to continue seeing half-arsed attempts at being merely adequate any more.
I want the Villa to be the best team in the land..I always did and always will.
We had a good run under MON and then it went to pieces.
Houllier was a gentleman manager and got torn to shreds by the pressure to a point where his health became endangered. He did well in the short time he was there.
Now I sense a new order is coming to fruition and I have a sense of trepidation about what I envisage and what may transpire. Maybe it is fear of the dark syndrome? I certainly do not see top 4 challenge for a good while.
If it works out well and we do not get relegated I will be happy with reservations.
I do not see dynamism as in the several top teams who dominate the PL presently.
It is only football eh? 'not a matter of life and death' is it?
I will never hate the Villa and my outlook, as you seem to feel is dubious, results from my concerns for the future our great team and the return to greatness that the greatest fans in the country deserve to see back again.
This appointment still has to be seen to be an astute move.
I'll give it time..it is all we have.
Long live the Villa..it will be around for a lot longer than any of us and when the dust of old arguments has settled and wiped away.
Prozac.?.Villa is the Prozac in my life and it ain't doing the trick just now.

Is that an unpublished verse from 'I am the Walrus'?

Is there any point in bring back the past? I was not alive during our biggest period of modern success. I am sick of seeing us milk the success of the early eighties and the constant referral to the players of that era.
We need to create history for the younger generation of Aston Villa supporters! I thought we had a bright future?

You are right to say we have to create history for today's generation but worng to deny those of us who were around to witness those heady days of the Saunders era. What you have to be aware of is that my generation had far much worse shit to witness than what you think you are seeing today, ask anyone who stood in Rochdale, Bury, Halifax and the like. I'm sorry but for the rest of my life I will be grateful to Ron Saunders and his players because for once in my football following life I was top of the tree and damn proud of it! Any time anyone wants to remind me of those time they're welcome.
-
Do not misunderstand me. I appreciate the legacy Saunders created at this great club and I am also fully conscious of the depressing days you witnessed in the lower divisions. But surely the climb through the divisions excited you? And the utter delight when you saw us lift the League Trophy and the European Cup suppressed the disappointment of the previous years?
You must ask yourself what have the younger generation at Villa Park witnessed? When is our romance going to begin?
-
Ron Saunders has maintained a dignified silence on a number of issues over a number of years and has chosen his moments to emphasize his enduring affection for Aston Villa FC with consumate aplomp since his departure.
Don't drag an elderly and revered man into your petty propaganda wars, Lerner.

Yes the climb through the divisions did excite me but not the descent which is why I'll always give the Saunders memories priority over all the others to date. I think that everyone supporting Aston Villa will agree that it is one hell of a roller coaster ride. Paradoxically the future that you and I crave comes out of the past, history of the club and so on. I've posted on here during the AM thread that he's not my first choice and that neither was Ron Saunders at the time. How wrong could I have been? We have no choice but to give him a chance. Football has a funny way of balancing itself out, mark my words the day will come when the likes of the Ipswich's and Burnley's will again rise like the Phoenix and disrupt the perceived order. I'm sorry to say that it won't happen in my time now but I sincerly hope that it happens in yours and you get to pass on stories of Villa success and bore your grandchildren like I am doing to mine.

'Petty' best describes the way some people are looking for every possible reason to criticise the board at the moment. Petty, and pathetic.

What you have posted here is what makes this football club special and more attractive, IMO of course, than the likes of Manchester United and other perceived "top" clubs. I want there to be a struggle and a low point, it makes winning much more sweeter. Unfortunately we seem to be locked in mediocrity and lacking imagination at this moment in time.
We can only hope and dream of success for the future. But I have an inkling we will win the FA cup this coming season ;).

The first part of the interview was a bit shaky and Ron seemed a bit nervous. he did use the 110% phrase though. Part 2 today much better and Ron was getting into his stride - as dry and unforthcoming, and therefore recognisable, as ever - but always with a twinkle in the eye. Interesting he bigged up Brian Little and Sid but when asked about Andy Gray said he doesnt discuss individuals. Good story about Tony Morley and Ken McNaught ringing him a couple of weeks ago to see if they could pop up to see him with a few fans to get an autograph. Asked the one key attribute to be a good manager he replied Shape. I like the way as well he takes no personal credit - its all about the players. Good stuff - if he can be persuaded to write a book now that would be great.
Nie to see him in the dressing room. Not sure who the interviewer was but hes no Paxman.

Is there anyway any of us can see it that don't have AVTV ???

Thanks to B.T. I have seen the light!!

But surely the climb through the divisions excited you? And the utter delight when you saw us lift the League Trophy and the European Cup suppressed the disappointment of the previous years?
You must ask yourself what have the younger generation at Villa Park witnessed? When is our romance going to begin?
Sorry romance is a thing that lives in the past and will always be there and fondly remembered.
You should be asking when will our chance of passion begin and the answer is every new season, just like everybody else's

I watched the three sections on my IPod. I'm all up for remembering the past, I just wish we were still as good today. It was interesting stuff at times-but what an awkward so and so....legend that he undoubtably is. Bit rude at the end too I thought. I found it hard believe that he had so much difficulty using the word 'proud'

How do you get the Promo Code to register free as a season ticket holder? Renewed a few weeks ago and haven't had anything... should I e-mail them?

Dare I say it, although I have immense respect for the man and what he did for Aston Villa, it wasn't exactly the most forthcoming of interviews, and I suspect the interviewer found it hard work. He did look nervous at times and I almost felt sorry he had to answer some of those questions - like 'just how good was Gordon Cowans?' We all know just how good he was. But then again, what did I expect? Probably exactly what we got.
Highlight for me was hearing that he was surprised at his reception at Villa Park when he came on at half time a few years ago - good to know he knows the respect in which he is held by Villa supporters young and old. Also to hear that he did watch (at least part of - typical!) the European Cup Final, and although not proud (perish the thought) that he was delighted for the players and supporters. A true Villa legend.
