Jol signs 2 year deal.
-
One thing you can say about the Phoney Pharaoh-he picks managers very well.
-
Surely Hughes can now talk to others if he's been replaced and it would save fulham paying his wages.
-
I think its premier league rules that stop him from taking a job for a month. Our options are getting less by the day though.
-
Lets go Dutch and get Van Gaal .........
-
Was it not his contractual situation - ie he was essentially under a months notice. Now they have filled that job, then surely Hughes becomes available.
If he is, he should only be appointed if the only alternative is Schteve.

If we've made McClaren and Hughes the only options, then there is something seriously wrong at the club.

More chance of getting Van Gogh.

Can't agree more.
Hopefully not.

The biggest problem is its not in London.
-
Fulham haven't pissed around.
-
i was gutted at this, Jol would have been good for us, now its nailed on-umbrella man.

not quite sure I follow you there.
We weren't in London when we acquired one of the biggest draws in the game five years ago, either.
-
The best managers take time to get. Jol was free and an easy appointment to make. If it was a case of offering the job to the first available manager we'd have a new boss by now.
-
we always seem to piss about would be nice to get someone in so they can draw up what targets they want and get them here before pre season and have a bit of organisation about the place not like the shambles of last year whoever gets the job we must get behind them even if it is brolly man i dont think he would be that bad TBH
-
Wouldn't have minded Jol for us to be honest. Fulham have not messed around here.
-
I think our apparent slowness off the mark is a lot to do with RL dividing his time between here and the USA and he naturally likes to do things in person.
-
I would have had Jol as manager but I think he only wanted to manage in London as he still has a house there!
-
Jol was my first choice so disappointed he's gone to Fulham. I think it was so quick because they wanted him last year when Hodgson went to Liverpool but he wasn't available. Maybe that's why Hughes was only on a 2 year contract with a 1 year get-out clause? Timing just fell perfectly for them
-
Think its more to do with the timescale of actually drawing up a creditable list. Unless you're picking exclusively from the unemployed, clubs have to put out 'feelers' to find if certain candidates would be interested and the way we seem to operate i doubt we want to be accused of tapping someone up. Al Fayed's interview process probably just consisted of him asking Jol, Curbishley and O'Neill how much they hated the Duke of Edinburgh
-
One thing about Jol going there is that I'm farely certain he would have preferred the Villa job. So, if we weren't interested then that should mean we've got better in mind. And given that JOL is quite a good manager, surely that means we have someone VERY good in mond?
-
I would guess that we are looking primarily at the unemployed actually and not wanting to approach another club about their manager. Just my opinion

Does not necessarily mean better, that is subjective really based on who is doing the picking. Who they think is better may not be who you think is better.

Probably, but there's nothing wrong with trying to get an employed manager as long as you do it the right way. I'm sure we've explored that route but it takes time to do that
-
Fair play to Fulham, Jol has a decent record, they have moved quickly and filled their vacancy giving the new boss maximum time to make plans and act in the transfer window. I honestly don't know what our lot are fannying about at. They knew several weeks ago there was a good chance we would need a new gaffer this close season, so they've had several weeks to seek advice, see who might be available, sound them out as to whether they may be interested and to make their minds up. At the speed they are moving we'll end up with McLaren by default as there will be no-one else left - or McCallister.

I agree. In fact for me the better menagers are those already in a job (in the main) so it is that crop you should be looking at not those who are out of work because they have failed (admittedly there are levels of failure, Ancelotti would not necessarily have been a failure for example but you get my point no doubt)
-
Randy seems to me to dither in these times- he should have been here last week and already had a shortlist as houlliers departure was widely expected- the interviews should have been done and the new man getting on with sorting out his squad rather than randy just flying in today.
We cannot afford this to be a long drawn out process or we will miss out on available transfer options.
-
Well there goes my number one choise :( Bring back Doug!! ;)
Im not slagging our board off one bit, but it does worry me that we have a NFL owner and Vietnam vet in charge...Paul Faulkner who??? How are they going about the recruitment process as I dont see a lot of football knowledge dripping out of the 3 of them. Wouldnt surprise me if they advertsied the position with Randstad they way its going...we need the right man this year or the work Oneill started goes out the window.
-
Surely this leaves a green light to appoint Mark Hughes, no compensation, no notice period. I can't see it going anywhere else, last weeks events all point to it. Just waiting for Randy to arrive.

That was my take too. Assuming he would have at least met with us before signing a contract at Fulham, which he doesn't seem to have, that suggests we must have other solid options in mind, if not nailed on.

Really can't agree with this.
We couldn't approach/interview managers while Houllier was till in the job. And confuse us not knowing what's happening with Randy 'dithering'.
-
If we are only following a code of etiquette in not pursuing managers already employed then we will always end up with the likes of the wally with the brolly.
-
I just hope we appoint the right man soon we don't wan't a situation like last year.
-
I'm still putting my hope on Carlo ... plus I have £20 on him @ 20/1.
-
Dithering? Fannying about?
Fuck me. It's been a week and there are two months left until the season starts. Utter hysterical nonsense.
I reckon we will have made an appointment by the end of this or the beginning of next week. Hell, I think we might even appoint a manager better than Martin Jol by then.
-
As someone mentioned on one of the 15 other new manager threads didn't Martin 'no facial expression' Jol lose out to Schteve in a title race in Holland? Seems a bit strange to be refusing to get a season ticket if he is appointed whilst saying Fulham have done really well to quickly appoint Jol when his record is hardly miles better IMHO.
Not saying I'd rather Schteve than Jol, but I do think its more that his credibility was destroyed by the press rather than his ability as a football manager that has created such vehement opposition to him coming here. It's been mentioned already but I see lots of similarities to Graham 'Turnip' Taylor's treatment.
I still would be gutted if we end up with him, though!

I'd not expect us to be approaching managers with GH still in situ, but would be utterly amazed (and disappointed) if they hadn't started to think about possible candidates for the succession from the minute GH was taken into hospital. It was always on the cards we'd need a replacement from that moment on.
-
Interesting that MoN didn't get it.
You might back him ahead of Jol and he is supposed to be friends with Al Fayed.
-
Especially as we *seem* to have ushered him out the door quite firmly.

I think there are a lot of similarities with managers coming in as with players coming in - there is a perception that foreign is better.
-
I think the english versus foreign thing applies when talking up Martinez as well.
Might well be a very good manager but his achievements with Wigan don't even line up that well against potato head's.
