Title: Stripey Filth v Aston Villa - Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Ads on April 25, 2011, 06:41:31 PM
Reading the Albion forums you'd think that they've only got to turn up to beat us. Every bit as good as us, if not better, apparently.

I don’t see it somehow.

Young, Downing, Bent and Gabby to prove much too strong as we beat them yet again.

Quote from: Legion
Villa to win 2-0.

Bent 31 & 67

We won't, sadly.

Bent will score but they will win say 2-1. It will be a close game though.

2 Wanky defences

2-2

I think their defence is worse than ours and they have Carson in goal, that has to be worth a 2 - 0 start.

We will trash these erm ..

I really think we will win this by a big margin. Dunno why. I think we play too wide for them. I reckon they will be happy with a draw. We will score first for once and take them as they come out to play. Another Stoke without the Delap factor. Depends much on our state of mind- and theirs. If we are complacent thinking ourselves safe and they are either fighting or in panic it could be a thrashing or a scoreless draw.

I go for  a thrashing.

From what I have seen this season, especially under Woy, they're a more than decent side when they put their minds to it.

They're still Albion, though, so we'll beat them, but it's nice that they actually try these days.

We get more space which helps Young, Downing and Bent...but we are more vulnerable at the back as no clean sheets away from home testifies. Think both teams will go for it so it could be anything.

I've been worrying about this fixture ever since they came up.  They have to beat us one day (a la Wolves) and I fear it will be now.  I really hope I'm wrong but I think it'll be 2-1 to them.  We just didn't really know how to lose derby games under MON and now it seems we rarely win them.

So what have we left to hope for at end of season? Optimistically with all wins we could have 54pts or 50 with 2 wins and three draws or will it be 44 and be happy with lower mid-table finish and a summer to consider things? I want to see all wins from here and it is not impossible..we get nowhere but we do get some hope for future.
I thought any lost game or even a draw, up to now, was unacceptable. Now it is just hoping we are get enough to remain a decent distance away from 'the zone' to come back revived and aware for the next season; without major figures going elsewhere any time soon.
It is all academic now. As long as we can accumulate 5-6 points over remaining fixtures we will retain some self respect, if naught else.

Doesn't matter who the assistants are or how good we have as good as lost this match before we start with Dowd in charge.  Cue several penalty refusals for Villa and a soft one for them.  On the other hand he owes us a good one, oh hang on I've just seen some pigs flying past my window.

Bent has scored 4 in his last 3 away games and I can't see him not scoring again here against the WBA defence. I can't see us keeping a clean sheet either - they've got 13 in the last 6 games (including Blues away, plus Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, and Arsenal - all in all a tricky run of fixtures).

I'd take a draw and a good performance I reckon. 2-2, perhaps 1-1. They seem to get a lot of late goals, and we concede a few, so I reckon there'll be a bit of squeaky bum time.

The only choice I guess is Gabby or Heskey. I think I'd go with Gabby's pace against their defence, though I get the feeling Houllier doesn't think Gabby and Bent make great partners (they don't).

Statistically it would seem we will go two up and they will equalise - we've dropped more points from a winning position than anyone else and they have clawed back more points than anyone from a losing pposition I think?

Bannan is back in the squad

sportinglife.com

Aston Villa midfielder Barry Bannan has been added to the squad for Saturday's Barclays Premier League derby with West Brom at The Hawthorns.

The Scotland international has been recalled from a loan spell with Leeds United after having only restricted opportunities with the Championship club.

Bannan, 21, forced his way into the Villa side earlier in the campaign when they suffered a series of midfield injury setbacks.

Caretaker boss Gary McAllister - still deputising while manager Gerard Houllier recovers from a heart problem - has a full-strength squad available.

Villa could again be unchanged after collecting eight points from their previous four games to climb into the top half of the table.

Team

Aston Villa (from): Friedel, Walker, Collins, Dunne, Luke Young, Downing, Petrov, Bannan, Makoun, Ashley Young, Agbonlahor, Bent, Marshall, Clark, Heskey, Pires, Albrighton, Delph, Reo-Coker, Cuellar, Delph.

I'd start Bannan behind Bent. I think it would be a massive boost to his confidence and show him we want him at Villa.

Freidel

Walker Cuellar Dunne Young

Downing NRC Petrov Young

Bannan

Bent.

That would allow Bannan to express himself and hopefully show what he is made of.

An oddly low-key 1-1. Bent for us, obviously.

There will be goals in this one.  2-1 Villa with Bent and Young scoring.  Obviously Odimwinge for them.

Close out Brunt and Morrisson and the points are ours

Bloody excellent news. Bannan more than any of the other youngsters suffered from MON's mentality and prejudices and perhaps took some time to catch up to where he should be in his development. If they feel it's time to blood him, I think we could just be about to see some exciting football in the foreseeable future.

I'd start Bannan behind Bent. I think it would be a massive boost to his confidence and show him we want him at Villa.

The most frustrating thing about Bannan is he's been played in such a deep midfield role, even when I've seen him with the Reserves. Like you, I'd like to see him play in a more advanced role, though not sure I'd have him that forward.

The thing is with that role is he has the freedom to drift around where he likes and express himself.

He is the most skillfull player at Aston Villa and we need to try our best to make it work with him in our team.

Brunt out for them along with Thomas and Reid.

I'd play Gabby up with Bent, with Bannan on the bench to replace Petrov after an hour. With us 3-0 up and coasting....

Lawro strikes again!

" As for Villa, they were never going to be in serious trouble. It's not that the team were too good to go down, but they had enough individual match-winners such as Ashley Young and Stewart Downing to keep them up."

Er... So what you're saying is we are too good to go down.  Pleb.

Anyone know of anywhere in South Manchester likely to show the game? It's not for me, it's for a mate who likes to get into animal shaped bins.

I met Peter Odemwingie the other day. He seemed to be a thoroughly nice chap. He said that he would be playing today. I think he was wondering why a Villa fan would want to talk to him.

He did his business and i did mine.

He then came back to shake hands and say bye. I wished him luck but he didnt realise i had my fingers crossed behind my back.  ;D

He climbed into his four tail pipe AMG Mercedes and burbled off down the road. Nice guy, but no win bonus for him this weekend !

Albion 1 Villa 2

He is not a big guy. I was suprised how small he seemed to be. Probably needs a good meal in him. Ive seen more meat on a sparrows ankle.

Decent player, certainly. But he offers nothing we don't already have.

I think we'll win today, and win well - and it'll see us up to 9th.

One change, Gabby in for Heskey. Bannan named on the bench and then replaced by Albrighton who was totally left out (as is Makoun)

Fridel, Walker, Dunne, Collins, Downing, Petrov, NRC, Young, Gabby, Bent

Subs: Marshall, Pires, Clark, Bradley, Albrighton, Delph, Cuellar
