Title: Match Day Pubs
Post by: itbrvilla on April 07, 2011, 11:18:24 AM
As the trains are off on Sunday and we have a late 4pm kick off I was thinking of taking in some match day pubs with a Dutch friend who is coming with me (he supports Ajax).
We will get into town and move on from there.  Can anyone recommend any pubs that I should take him to as well as any pubs good for a sing-song?

Many thanks!

Not a sing song pub - but it would be very rude if you weren't to show him the delights of Bartons.

If it's the City Centre you're after, most pubs are shit.

But, two good ones here

Wellington
The Old Contemptibles
Old Royal
Ruskin Hall
Barton Arms

Your best bet would be to have a few in the first two and get a taxi/bus to the Bartons.
Taxi rank is close to the OC's outside Snow Hill Station, or walk over to Bull Street and catch the number 7 which drops you right by the Bartons.

I don't think we've ever denied it Chris :) though I'm glad you've not included the females of this parish who attend the Bartons :), though how they put up with us is another matter?

Anyhow one more possibility in town, the Shakespeare on Lower Temple Street is now run by the same outfit that have the Old Contemptibles  http://www.nicholsonspubs.co.uk/theshakespearelowertemplestreetbirmingham/ so there is now decent beer there as well.   I was going to say  Edmonds is alright just over Colmore Row and down Newhall Street when you come away from the Wellington,  http://www.edmundsbar.co.uk/index.php, but looking at the website It's not clear whether it's open on Sunday's (so It's probably not).  It's a wine bar (spit, spit) but does serve Real Ale and can be useful neutral territory for meeting "The unconverted" (larger drinkers :))).

The Wellington really suffered from the smoking ban. The layer of cigarette smoke firmly masked the pungent mixture of B.O. and ale-infused guffs, but now there is no protection.

When I was a kid I remember the singing in places like the Witton Arms and the banter we had with the away fans.  Does this exist anywhere around VP anymore?  The only atmosphere in terms of singing that I have found these days is at the Adventurers.  I live in Spain and so when I get over for a game I want a bit of atmosphere and it seems there are not too many options in that respect.  I get the impression that some pubs regulars see the whole singing thing to be below them as if it's some kind of second class activity.  Is this the case or have I totally misread the situation and if so where is the atmosphere these days?

I sell the fanzine before the game, so can't comment on that. The Social is better than the Ads after games nowadays, so could well be before as well. King Edward's selling point is fit barmaids, so that's something to consider. Good atmosphere after we win as well.

Hello all, I thought I'd bring this thread back from the dead.  I'm keen to take in some match day pubs with my bro and a few of his mates. It's his 40th and he's hardly been to see the Villa since the David Platt days but we've got him tickets for the Saints game in Jan. I'm keen for a couple of decent pubs pre-match (from about 12pm) for some nice pints and then a sing song before the game. Will be with a couple of non-villa supporters but they will be for the day and not the sort of idiots to cause trouble about that.

Any thoughts would be really appreciated. Are we still looking at places like Bartons, The Old Contemptibles, Jekyl and Hyde and The Aston Social?

Barton's Arms is the key pub. Pre-match there and Ruskin post-match? Or, just tell the club what you told us and negotiate a hospitality package at the ground. Estimated crowd for that game 30,000-35,000. Deals will be available for usually 'premium' packages.

The big problem as I see it is that it's 'official,' used for corporates and therefore any sort of behaviour which might even slightly be termed unseemly is unacceptable. What would be normal in any other matchday pub would have Tarquin and Nigel having to apologise to the client they're entertaining and that would never do.

I thought it looked different when i looked in as i walked past the other night. I'll have to pop in next home game.

As for The Holte Pub, it's a nice and handy if you sit in the Holte End but it's a bit on the small side to be charging to get in. The Gordon Cowans Suite is free now though but it's a bit drab in there if truth be told.

Good beer, Green King I think. Brilliant view. 20-20 mins from ground walking. Better than any of the sh*tholes around Shepherds Bush..go to Wetherspoons on the Green as a place for a chancy cheap pint..probably full of 'gers fans tho.

Where is everyone drining tonight to watch the game?  On my lonesome so fancy a beer!  Had an offer from a Bradford supporting colleague but fear it may be upsetting for one of us!

Relax dan, pie cannot appear on cup duties due to contractual reasons.
Captain birds eye will not allow !

Also much better if pie is nice and fresh ready for the saints game .

Tonight we can win with a sausage roll!

Well known for good real ales that area.
Fanny's ale house 63 Saltaire rd, Shipley, and The Brewery Tap, 51 Albion rd, Idle are recomended in the real ale guide for that area.

It was shit in the Strahtallan, I was the only Villa fan in there. When I heard some of them taking the piss it took every ounce of my fairly recently found calmness not to batter anyone. The old me would be proud.

Might swerve the Strath in future though, realised our record when i've watched us there is now D1 L5. Maybe I should have asked them to heat me up a pie at HT.

Just seen on Twitter that the Briar Rose in town ‘will no longer welcome football fans, home or away, on matchdays’

Good luck with policing that.

Couldn't find where else to go with this so sorry for dragging an old thread up.
I'm heading up to the Brentford game with my wife and kids, normally id drink in town if alone but would rather grab one near ground before and head back to same pub after for one or 4 and grab a cab back to my inlaws from there. Any suggestions would be great. Cheers.

That is the one although you can miss out the park and carve through the back streets if you wanted to get there quicker.

It was also meet up pub for some of Villa's naughty boys in the 80s.

I remember those days. We used to get the 46 bus to Perry Barr and stop off in there on the way to Villa Park. Popular with rascals until the early 80s although some of the old timers would still drink in there for a few years. Luckily we missed the day Chelsea stormed in and and started throwing glasses around 1978-9.

Somebody organised a coach form there for Rotterdam and they had black and white Crown & Cushion t shorts printed.

The last time I went in there was probably 7-8 years ago and it was very quiet for a match day, maybe 25-30 people in there. It was clear it was on its last legs.
