Title: Rod Liddle at it again
Post by: Mister E on February 13, 2011, 08:24:08 AM
Today's Sunday Times has the "opinion-forming" Rod decrying Fabio's comments about D Bent. Which is fair enough; I thought Fab's belief that moving to VP has improved Bent's England's prospects somewhat random.
But Liddle then goes on to make the "size matters" comparison between ourselves and Sunderland ... controversial and rather one-eyed.

Don't know what we've done, but this guy (whom I used to think was faintly amusing) is becoming a serial critic. Perhaps he is a friend of MON?

He's saying they're a bigger club than us?

He is paid to have controversial opinions, to a deadline. He also has as much in-depth knowledge of the game of football as the average tub of margarine. Ignore.

Although he's paid to be a dick, I'm willing to bet real money that he's also a dick in his spare time.

I've read the article and can't see he's said anything anti-Villa.
He merely pointed out that Sunderland and Villa have similar attendances, Sunderland have won the League title 6 times to Villa's 7, but Sunderland are chasing a Europa League place while Villa are 3 points away from the relegation zone. All true.

I wish I could get paid to do what I love.

It is quite fair to say that both ourselves and Sunderland are historically big clubs. Anyone who complains about our history being ignored is being hypocritical if they do not agree that Sunderland are around the same level of big club as us.

Honestly we need to grow up. It's an opinion and this is not Saudi Arabia or other similar places. He can say what he likes. I know lot of Sunderland fans  and we have mutual repect for each other. Capello was over the top with Bent comments and yes they were  disrespectful to the Black Cats.

We have a similar history up until about WWII and that's it.

Since then we've won the league, FA Cup, EC, various league cups, been involved in a few title challenges and qualified for Europe on numerous occasions.

Since the 40's, Sunderland have won one FA Cup in the 70's - as underdogs- and qualified for Europe. Once. The only time in their entire history.  They've spent the rest of the time dodging between the lower tiers of the game. I know football is becoming increasingly short-termist in outlook, but does one season of reaching the giddy heights of 7th by Feb suddenly constitute a club on the move?

I like the Mackems (well like is a bit strong, how about dislike a bit less than most other clubs) but notions that they are on a par or (laugh) bigger than us don't really stack up. Which is why most of their fans, the ones with a bit of knowledge/ awareness anyroad,  wouldn't be daft enough to say as much. It's left like twats like Holt and Liddle to fill the void in a desperate attempt to stir a bit of a reaction.

If Sunderland are bigger than us how come we click our fingers and their best player can't get here quick enough?

Sunderland are not bigger than us but your reasoning is flawed. When Andy Gray joined wolves or Gareth Southgate joined boro did that make those two bigger than us?

Totally different circumstances. They'd both been asking for a transfer for ages.
