Interesting.
If upheld it will certainly hit Sky's income from pubs.

A victory for the common man.

Without tthinking too deeply on it, I hope this is the beginning of the end for Sky and their huge influence on the game.

Its probably not though.

Well they won't just let it happen. I'm sure the tories will be trotting someone out to speak against it soon enough. Perhaps someone who doesn't think we should be in the EU and will use this as proof of more 'interfering' from Brussels.

It's different when SKY turn a blind eye to the ex pats in Spain who watch PL on sky boxes. The PL and SKY are proper wankers.

So what if it wasn't upheld?

It's not as though the pubs who show these games would be pulling the plug if the outcome was unfavourable.

The PL can think and say what they like about it. As it stands, there is nothing they can do to prevent any of us installing and using a system compatible with any EU satellite broadcasts e.g. a cheap Greek system.

The adjudication is very strongly worded "(The) exclusivity rights in question have the effect of partitioning the internal market into quite separate national markets, something which constitutes a serious impairment of the freedom to provide services."

The PL/Sky may eventually get things turned around in their favour but it will be a long process.

No it just means they would have been done more easily than they are now.

You can buy the receiver for about £400 that gives you access to live coverage of every single premiership match.

My parents subscribed to Sky from Spain for 8 years, and they were only too happy to take the money.

148 BGN (~ 65GBP) equipment + 16 BGN (~7GBP) monthly for the package that gets both channels showing premiership football (Diema and Nova Sport). You get 6 PL games per weekend + FA cup games (don't know how many) + you get between 4-6 CL games in CL weeks plus UEFA cup games. (plus quite a lot of other stuff like Spanish primera, Bundesliga, Russian top division may be italy too etc.)

Whilst anything that's bad for Murdoch is good news to me, I'd worry that the 'big' clubs, on receipt of a reduced offer from Sky, would push for the abandonment of the collective negotiation principle and do their own deals.

Even I would be tempted.

Of course what woyuld happen is that Sky would become the EUROPEAN broadcasters and there would be limited (if any) reselling to other broadcasters.

I think there's money to be made buying the kit locally Tsvet and bringing over to Birmingahm and re-selling!

It's still Sky who provide all the content.

Hopefully Virgin Media are exploring getting hold of Nova sports carrier rights and have it for next year's premier league matches for a lot cheap!

So if I have sky , how do I go about getting this instead, anyone local who fits decoder etc and will I need a new dish? What sort of monthly cost and installation cost ?

Paying sky £80 a month at the moment so I am interested to switch.

That's the big fear for me. If we think it's all about the Sky 4 (5?) now wait til clubs are allowed to negotiate their own tv deal - the gap between the Champs League clubs and the rest will just expand tenfold. It's already happened in Spain - Real and Barca's tv income dwarves the 18 other clubs to such an embarassing degree that the relatively recent days of Valencia and Depor winning La Liga seem a fond and distant memory now, and are never likely to happen again.

As i understand it the dish satelite set up is old technology, the increased telecom  band width that is around the corner will make it impossible for any TV co to control where there broadcasts are captured, internet streaming is allready having an impact and the days of a single broadcaster like sky controlling the transmission will soon be over. i have no idea how this will shake down.

Can't see the necessary 14 clubs voting for that.

What's Greek for "Did you smash it?".

Portsmouth pub landlady Karen Murphy, fined for using a Greek service, had argued the EU single market should let her use any European provider.

Can we call the new ruling "Murphy's Law"?

Play only Premier League games on a sunday afternoon, with TV coverage for all games through the red button, then all games in all other leagues have saturdays to themselves, might increase their attendances as well.

The only worry is the amount of junior football played on a sunday afternoon.

Is it legal to stream online?

Exactly, I don't know of one pub where I live now that has Sky as it's so expensive. Plenty have these cheap alternatives though...

Whilst I should rejoice at anything that undermines the hold that Sky have on the game, I do worry that if will simply hasten the end of the collective negotiation of TV rights.

They have this channel at the Boot (opposite Good Hope) which shows pretty much all the villa away games.

Tbh it's a no brainer as this Nova thing only costs them 800 quid while pretty sure I read somewhere Sky costs pub around 7000 a year?
