Title: Vote for your classic claret and blue game-changing moments
Post by: Legion on February 02, 2011, 05:47:49 PM
New initiative launches with club partners 188SPORT (http://www.avfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10265~2283072,00.html)

Quote
188SPORT today launched its new 'Moments In Time' initiative, encouraging Aston Villa fans to vote on their all-time favourite game-changing moments.

The online campaign draws on how a specific moment, whether a 30-yard thunderbolt, an injury-time equaliser, a last-gasp tackle or a goal-keeping blunder, can change the course, and ultimately the outcome of a football match.

With support from six Premier League partner clubs (Aston Villa FC, Bolton Wanderers FC, Chelsea FC, Everton FC, Liverpool FC and Wigan Athletic FC), the initiative has collated some of the greatest game-changing moments from the respective clubs' histories.

Is it Peter McParland's second goal against Manchester United, which effectively clinched the 1957 FA Cup or Nigel Spink coming on as a substitute, due to a Jimmy Rimmer neck injury, in the 1982 European Cup final?

Spink pulled off some glorious saves to keep a clean sheet against a strong Bayern Munich side en route to a 1-0 victory.

The online forum features exclusive content from Aston Villa club legends and ambassadors, including Ashley Young detailing his favourite 'Moment In Time' playing for the club.

But the site is designed for football fans of all ages to join in the debate, simply by uploading their own moments or commenting on others.

Terry Venables, former England manager and 188SPORT Ambassador, said: "So often in a game of football there will be an instant that either impacts or changes the outcome of the match.

'Moments In Time' is a great way for fans to discuss these moments and we're looking forward to seeing the suggestions that supporters come up with."

The campaign is completely free for fans to get involved with and a range of match tickets to see Aston Villa in action are being given away as part of the initiative.

Those who contribute to the site by uploading their favourite moments could see their moment featured in the match day programme.

To get involved in 'Moments In Time' and be in with a chance of winning match tickets, simply click here (https://www.188sport.com/moments/) and join the debate.

Something to do with the League Cup semi back last season I'm sure.

I will go for the time the referee gave an indirect free kick against Spinky in his own box at the Manor Ground. Oxford scored, we lost, we got relegated.

Is that the kind of thing?

Or the time Beelzebub came on for QPR while we were 2-0 up, and we booed him so mercilessly that he scored a hat-trick.

That will live with me alright

Ditto his goal in the home leg.

The penalty and subsequent red card in the semi last season were pretty game changing.

When the parachuting Santa crashed into and then fell from the roof of the old Trinity at half-time of a home game against Arsenal, 13th December 1998. Trailing 2-0 at the time and not looking in it, completely different game in second half and the extended delay seemed to play a part in it.

Damon I remember that Francis hat trick for qpr but I don't think we were 2-0 at the time ? It was 1989 and if I remember rightly we lost 1-3.

I was booing so hard I probably wasn't paying attention. I remember him laughing after he scored

Yes he took the last down on his knee and then volleyed it in, even a lot of trinity road Enders actually applauded that goal, glad he did it for qpr though and not blues.

I wouldn't call it "classic", but Richard Wright's challenge on Luc Nilis.

No one will ever know how good we'd have been that season, but I still maintain we'd have finished top 4 had he not broken his leg.

Jimmy Rimmer having the professionalism to put his hands up at Rottherdam after 9 minutes or so.

The rest is, as the say, history.............

This was the first one that came to my mind when I saw this thread. Collymore came on as sub at half time and tore Arsenal to pieces, in a way that we saw all too rarely from him. Truly game changing.

Imagine if such an injury has befallen Sasa Curcic a few minutes into his 2nd game - we'd still have been mulling over what might have been now.

I see the point you are making there, but I think we'd seen enough in the Intertoto and first couple of league games from Nilis that he was something special.

That was what I was thinking as well....really don't think we were 2-0 up. He was good that day, you simply had to admit it.

Definitely 1-0 up I think Platt had scored for us and we thought it was all over but then beelzebub showed up.

Staying with 1989-90 - David Platt's missed penalty at home to Wimbledon at 0-0 and Villa going on to lose 0-3. Probably the beginning of the end of the title challenge.

I was just going to post that. We would have gone five points clear if we'd won that, and had a Cup quarter-final to look forward to. We fell apart after that missed penalty in the league and it wasn't long before cheating plastic pitch bastards Oldham knocked us out the Cup too.

Perhaps if you're looking for massive moments in Villa's history you could include Stuart Gray's late equaliser against Middlesbrough in 1989 that provided us with the point that eventually prevented us from making an immediate return to Division Two.

Shaun Teale's spectacular og against Forest under BFR. We suddenly decided to start playing, and ripped them to bits. I think it ended up 3-1. Some of the best attacking football I've ever seen.

Nigel Spink's last minute punt upfield (at home to Crystal Palace 1989-90), resulting in a Platty special and a 2-1 victory, kick starting a season that was so so special.

His goals kept us up that season, the one you're talking about was against Sunderland.
