Mods, feel free to move this if it should be in the Villa Memories section, but here (http://media.newstalk.ie/podcast/22415/) is a link to an interview with SGT and God from Irish radio.
-
Great link, thanks.
-
Great to hear Paul talk so warmly about the villa.
-
Absolutely brilliant bit of radio.
-
Exellent work there Ger.
Thanks for the post.
I havn't enjoyed a bit of radio as much as I enjoyed listening to that, ever.
Good man.
-
Ger thanks Ger for post of great interview by Ger !!!
-
This should be stickied and be heard by every poster and visitor. Great listen.
-
Post of the Year.
Give him the trophy now.
-
Thanks Ger! Excellent stuff.

Thanks for posting that, it was great listening.
-
Terrific stuff.....including David Plat "scoring 4 or 5 goals" against Everton :o
-
Many thanks to the OP. I'm always listening to Newstalk and keep an eye out for anything even remotely Villa related and even I missed that one.
-
Superb. Really enjoyed that. Thanks Ger.
And the next podcast on the list was about Kerry football, where my old man is from. Great to hear the Kerry accent and the discussion.
-
There was a good interview , last week I think, on Talksport with Paul too.
Was great to hear that his fondest football memories were playing for us and that he always uses 'We' when refering to the club.
-
Thanks Ger it's a brilliant post a big thumbs up from me.
-
Any chance of typing up the interview please as I can't hear radio due to deafness. :(
-
All 40'47" of it!?
-
I'd forgotten it was mcgrath that fvcked up when francis got his hattrick.
ah well, still one of my favourite players over the years!
-
Great interview, fantastic season. I don't think we ever recovered from losing 3-0 at Coventry nor the 2-1 home defeat to Man City although we had a fantastic win at Highbury a couple of weeks later. Typicla of the Villa in that period that we followed a relegation battle with a title shot followed by a relegation battle followed by another shot at the title two years later. Exciting days.
-
Wimbledon at home was also particularly painful. That, coming a few days after a fantastic night at Tottenham where I was convinced we were going to win the title. Villa eh?
-
exactly why we follow them.
-
With all of these hosting and bittorrent technology, wouldn't it be a good idea to have a Villa archive - where members can upload and download all of their "off air" Villa-related TV and radio programmes - I'd love to hear some of the old BRMB sports forums, interviews and some old games, and would have a couple of things to contribute.
Does anyone have sufficient time and web-savvy to attempt it?

That was only of the only games my Mum came to,I banned her after that game. Didn't Platt miss an early penalty at nil nil?

A great interview.
This was a period where I'd only just become fascinated with English football and The Villa a couple of years previous. Back then there was little information about Div One football and the Villa floating about over here. Pre internet, with an hour highlights package on monday night, a few magazines released a week or two after print from the UK and not much more than a snippet in the local papers. That's all changed of course, so it's amazing to hear these two discussing that era.
Cheers.
-
Great listen, cheers for the link.
-
Thanks to Ger for the find and to placeforparks for the link that automatically dumped the file on this technophobes phone.
Really entertaining stuff. Pissed off my wife when I had my headphones on for three quarters of an hour last night though.
-
Great is a very over used word in sport, but Paul McGrath was a truely great player. Best i've seen in a Villa shirt.
Sir Graham is wonderful to listen too aswell. He still sounds so in control, almost like a soothing uncle that watches over the Villa.
Thanks for posting this, These too will be remembered by Villa fans for a long, long time to come.
-
Thanks Ger, that was a great listen.
It is obvious there is a great deal of mutual respect between GOD and SGT.
It just reminds me of what being a Villa fan is all about, we often seem to be the nearly men, and the what if.
I'd also forgotten how quickly a team that was relegated had been turned around to become title contenders, hopefully we see the same again this season or next.
Great to hear the two of them talking about that team, there really were some great players, McGrath, Platt, Cowans.
-
That was really great to listen to. Nice one.
-
Interesting too that, like Bent, God said he used to love playing at Villa Park before he signed for us. I've heard other players say that too.
-
Thanks very much for posting the link, Ger, great effort. A very enjoyable 45 minutes. Those who've read "Back from the Brink" will be familiar with a lot of the ground covered, but it was fantastic to hear the warmth that's still there between the two of them. Great to hear Paul saying how he absolutely loved being at the Villa. SGT came over superbly as well, which he doesn't always manage on 5 live. Ah, the memories......

I didn't realise Paul had tried to commit suicide, I really hope he is doing well and is not plagued by his addictions to much. I am going to get a copy of his book, it sounds like great reading.

It is good reading, but it's very tough going.
He does seem to be in a relatively good place at the moment, but it wasn't too long ago that I really did fear for him. A couple of interviews he gave showed that he was at rock bottom.
-
I wish Sir Graham had explained why he bought Cascarino instead of Sheringham.

Doug could get Cascarino for several hundred thousand pounds cheaper so he did and told GT who knew Sheringham was the better player, Millwall were happy and so we thought were we!
-

He has, several times. He wanted Sheringham, Millwall's chairman Reg Barr wouldn't sell. Doug said he'd try to talk his mate Reg into selling. Still no go, but did we want Cascarino? Okay says Sir Graham, he's worth maybe 7-800k. Deal done, Doug says. For £1.5 million.
-
I thought this was brilliant. The two obviously have a lot of affection for one another and McGrath is such a naturally eloquent character (not that SGT isn't eloquent, but he's been exposed to the media a hell of a lot more) that the interview passed really swiftly. Puts the gobshites on Sky and Talksport to shame.

Have you got a link supporting that - I've heard rumours along those lines, but never from Sir Graham himself.
If it's true, then Doug misered us not only of a League Title, but someone who would have been a Villa legend (or else someone we could have flogged for a tidy profit).
EDIT: Haha, just googled it and came up with an amazon link to one of your books!

I've got an entire interview with the great man. It's in the managers book which is well out of print and I keep thinking about updating, then we keep changing manager.
It wasn't Doug being miserly; he couldn't get the player we wanted so he wasted a small fortune on another one.

When he said in the interview on the DVD " My Life And Football" that he is just wasting away at the moment I thought Jesus could someone just give him something to do. He did have that "Director of Football" job with Waterford a few years back but it didn't last too long . I think it was more of a publicity stunt on behalf of the club more than anything else, which I think they admitted to themselves.

Of course you're right in retrospect but at the time I remember feeling vindicated when Cascarino was signed. I'd been banging on to anyone who would listen (and probably quite a few who wouldn't) about how he was just the player we needed. So in retrospect: hmmm.

Someone I know says that his propensity for falling off the wagon might just be his ultimate undoing. They said at Paul Birch's funeral he was in a terrible state of disrepair, although I think that's justified though not necessarily healthy.
-
But if Graham had just said he didn't rate Cascarino we wouldn't have made any bid for him and maybe got someone better instead. Considering he unearthed three of Villa's best players of the past 25 years I suppose slack should be cut.

great stuff- i dont know much about computers but how could i save it to pc and then transfer to a blank cd?
