We've improved recently, but this is still Manchester United away, and I'll think  we'll play well, probably score, but will ultimately lose. Its the 10-11 games after this which I'm really looking forward to.

After this game we have 11 in a row against teams outside the top 7, a great chance to move up the table, this will be tough but we may just sneak a point- I hope we see a performance similar to Chelsea away, if we play with that effort and commitment we might get something from it.

I'm not expecting a result, so anything we get will be a bonus .

Well, we'll lose. But it won't be the disaster it could have been after our wins over City and Wigan (City especially as it was something of a bonus).

We go one up early dings, probably Bent. Hold out until HT mid way through the second half they score (Berbatov) then late on after we have missed a penalty Vidic scores from a corner runs into the crowd and avoids a booking because the wind took him there.

Got to agree with lovejoy

We'll score early, get to half time ahead and then sit deeper and deeper second half, unable to hold on to the ball, thus conceding two goals...

I'll be surprised (although that's become a habit this rather brilliant January!) if we get anything out of this one, I think they'll push past us 2-1, with a late-ish winner for them from that bloody Hernandez.

I'm being ridiculously optimistic and going for 5-0 to us as we still owe them for not shoving that past them back in October.

Good to see Ferguson showing us some respect by resting half his first team today knowing the mighty Villa are arriving on Tuesday.

Everyone keeps telling me they won't go the full season without a defeat but not sure we are going to be the ones to take their unbeaten record.

I think Man Ure will sneak it 1-0 but would absolutely love it if we beat them!

Wow.  So many predictions of a Villa win on here.  I can't see it myself, this is Man U at Old Trafford and we have had our 26-yearly-win there last season so I'm going for 3-1 to them.  Nani, Berbabtov, Rooney.  Downing for us.  Shame we had to play them now as it'll bring our run to an end, still, we can pick it up again starting with the Fulham game.  This one is a write off for me and anything would be a huge bonus.  :(

I hope you are right! How they are unbeaten is a mystery to me!   Apart from some very strange referee decisions! As the manure flag says "we do what we like"
Title: Re: Manchester United v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread

1-1

berbatov - gabby

    cuellar collins dunne clark

albrighton petrov downing gabby

              young
                          bent

I don't like that midfield, isn't that the one we went with at home to Man City?  I know we won that game but playing away at OT is a different story, its's too attacking and potentially lightweight.  Horses for courses and all that. I'd like to see one of NRC, Makoun, Delph in there instead of either Downing or Albrighton and I'd like to see Gabby upfront with Bent in a 4-4-2.  So I'd go:

Brad

Cuellar  Dunne  Collins  Clark

Young  Makoun/NRC  Petrov  Downing

Gabby  Bent

I imagine he'll go 4-5-1 though with this team and Gabby on the left.

I have gone for a manure home win as they seem to be getting very lucky at the moment and they usually get the rub of the green up there, i'd take a draw right now but the way we have been playing stranger things have happened than us getting a win, I think I said the same last season.

in reply to holtenderinthesky

i cant see young on the right though, GH likes to play him off the striker.

i also cant see him dropping gabby thats why i chose that team, it is an attacking midfield but blackpool took the game to man u and could have got the points if they'd defended better, like we did against city we could win with that midfield but saying that this is the midfield i would like to see

albrighton nrc petrov bannan young

with downing and gabby options off the bench to change the game

I would take a 1-1 draw. We're in form and confident and the win at OT last season lifted that particular monkey from our back. We will go there and give them a decent game and if we get lucky could nick it.

I think we should be good enough to get a point, but their ridiculous ability to find an extra gear in the last third of the game meeting our second half, last-ditch deep defending may well cock it up.
Title: Re: Manchester United v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: brontebilly on January 30, 2011, 03:15:23 AM
Think we will get a point at least. Surprisingly confident about the game. United haven't been playing well lately and we finally have put some results together. We will play same formation as against Chelsea. Delph and Makoun are ready for 90 minutes yet. Key is Clark getting tight to Nani. Gabby will have to put a decent shift into to help him. Need a big performance from Ashley Young but he is capable of it.

Bent to put us one up early on. United to equalize late on and we hold on for a point.

Not expecting anything. I think a few of us are getting a little carried away with the recent upturn; it is still a very fragile recovery and we're up against a team who scored 5 in their last home game.

I just hope we put in a good performance (and I'm sure we will), and that we (I!) manage to keep a sense of perspective should we lose - it's Man Utd at Old Trafford, there are much better teams than us who've been thumped up there!

The fixture list after this one looks promising, so regardless of this game, I'm sure we'll start to move up the table and finish top ten pretty comfortably.

I think we're more than capable of grabbing a point in this game, and the confidence being where it is, we have the weapons to grab all three. Having said that, our problems remain at the back, and it's unlikely we'll be able to keep them out for 90 minutes. I'll go for 1-1, with Dazza Bent for us and Dazza Fletcher for them.

Quite a few weren't looking forward to playing United last time round... result in the end was annoying but genuinely looking foward to this game; not sure why though as United @ The Theatre of Toads is usually quite a daunting prospect for most teams (as small heath found out) but I feel like we'll give them a good game.

Beating them at their stadoum in consecutive years? Odds our against us but we're starting to climb the table and we're playing pretty well, surely they can't escape the jaws of defeat this time 'round? ;)

With the recent form, the players should go into this with a lot of confidence.

More so, as after years of rolling over to them, we've suddenly become very difficult for them to beat us as it's only 1 defeat in 5 against them in the league and that was a 94th minute Macheda wonder strike.

The referee for the game is Chris Foy (Merseyside)

It will be this third time he's refereed Villa this season, the last being our Cup defeat away at Blues. The last time he refereed Man Utd he bottled a red card for Gary Neville (against Baggies - anyone remember?), but wasn't so much one-eyed as incompetent, as he also denied Manchester Reds a clear penalty.

He will be assisted by Turner (yellow flag) and Mohareb (chequered). The 4th official will be Stuart Attwell.

Friedel
Cuellar - Collins - Dunne - Clark
Makoun - Petrov - Downing
Ashley - Bent - Gabby

3-1 Man Utd.

Bent for us.

Apparently Bradley can play in this game, though I doubt he'll be anything more than a sub if is available. Makes our subs bench that much stronger which is a great sign for the future.

In his OS interview he said:

"I want to play at the highest level and test myself in the biggest of games. Whether it's on Saturday against Fulham at Villa Park or the week after, I am excited to be here and ready to get going."

So he doesn't think he'll be involved tomorrow.

I think he's still waiting for a work permit so won't be eligible.

I'd go with -

----------------------------Friedel--------------------------
---Cuellar----------Dunne-----Collins---------Clark----
------------Reo-Coker---Makoun---Petrov-------------
---Young--------------------------------------Downing---
------------------------------Bent----------------------------

Marshall
Walker
Bannan
Agbonlahor
Heskey
Albrighton
Lichaj

Manchester United 1-1 Aston Villa

Bent 43

Berbatov 76

When I listened to the full interview on AVTV he mentioned being involved in tomorrow nights game, which I thought was a little odd. One would imagine though that like Makoun he'll have to wait a few days for his work permit to come through. Fulham at home is more reasonable.

I have a sneaky feeling we may get a result here - would take a draw now

I cannot beleive how they are top and have not lost yet as i think it is the most blan, boring weakest United team i have seen for years - their luck will end soon

An alamo style 1-0 to us

I think we can and should forget about everything else and just have a go at them. If we lose, well, that's what everybody is expecting. No point trying to hang on or sitting back for the whole match. Just get out the traps and try and give them a bloody nose. They're good but they're not amazing or anything. We can get something there.

It would also be great to inflict their first defeat in the league. That should have happened at Villa Park in fairness.

Agree totally - we have to go there and from the off go at them - attack will be the best for of defense

Just need to not concede early, thats what the dog shit do and once they smell blood they can really hurt teams but frustrate them and their fickle fans get the right hump

Got a horrible feeling about this one.  They will be putting their strongest side out without doubt as he always does against us, plus he will be reminding them before the start how we tore them apart for 80 minutes at VP.  Then he will send them out to get revenge for that day and if they come at us and get a bit of luck early doors then we could be faced with a damage limitation exercise.

Hope to god I am wrong though.  Would prefer Carlos in for this instead of Walker, we need to keep it tight and I think Nani would give Walker a bit of a run around.

Doesn't everyone like the fact that we are all throwing together possible teams and few of them agree with each other. Bearing in mnd people like Heskey, Bradley (did he sign in time?), Delph, Pires have hardly had a mention on the thread so far. Makes a refreshing change to genuinely have options so that we can make a selection tactically.

I think the team will be:

Friedel, Carlos, Dunne, Collins, Clark, Downing, Petrov, NRC, Gabby, Young, Bent.
I think the we should play albrighton instead of downing but otherwise I would probably agree with that.

NRC and Petrov in a 4-4-2? That, my friend, is no attacking system, that exists for the counter-attack. Not that I necessarily disagree with either attacking or counter-attacking, but if you want to attack, that's the wrong system.

Still surprises me that people when listing their preferred team omit Downing and many omit Petrov. For where we are now and how Downing, in particular, has played this year they'd both get in my first choice Villa eleven at the moment.

I think he'll play Albrighton and Young either side of Bent tonight with Downing, Petrov and Makoun [if fit] making up the rest of the midfield. Not a bad team at all and regardless of the result tonight we should have a very good rest of the season.

Agreed. I hope that Villa have a really good go at them, without being naive defensively.  A defeat here does not matter and will not be a surprise, as long as Villa win the remaining league games that they should win, to reach safety and the top half of the table. An FA Cup away win at Citeh, then a home quarter final to take revenge against Blues would be the cherry on that cake.

United are undefeatedall season without really even hitting top form
It shows what a great side they are. Our best hope is to take the sting out of the game and try and hit them late on with a breakaway goal. Going a goal up too early could ignite them as we've seen so many times

Looks very lightweight in the CM area, the experience and strength of Petrov & NRC need to be in there

That's what I'd go with if my nickname was Clouseau

Not that I make a habit of betting against us, but at us in to win the first half but United to win the game at 20-1. I couldn't resist.

You'll have made worse bets, but still, behave.

Earlier in the thread I rather stupidly predicted we would win 4-1. Now we're nearer kick off common sense has kicked in. No way will they score, so 4-0 it is then.

Fergie tends to play slightly weaker sides against us, so i'm hoping to see the likes of Carrick and Fletcher in their midfield, who were both hopeless when they played Albion.

Surprised to see we've only lost to them once in the last five league games. When did that happen? Still expect to see the same old stat about only having beaten them once since the dawn of time trotted out. Although, at least they can't rub that winless Old Trafford streak in our faces anymore.

I thought that pairing bullyed us a bit at home although one of our CMs was Hogg if memory serves, we are well served in midfield now but I'd welcome either of them to VP if things changed, a very under rated couple of players.

I don't understand? Do you want Villa or Man U to win?

I'd call Carrick very over-rated personally. I hate to think how much stick we would have got if we'd paid 」17m for him.

So would I, and I've never met anyone worth their salt who doesn't rate Fletcher.

I agree, Porridge would have been shit without him.

9-1 for a Villa win?? I rarely bet on us but that was the easiest decision of my day.

Very happy with that line up. Solid central midfield, and I think Walker will help us to penetrate. I think Gabby having a hamstring tweak has helped team selection tonight.

Edit - i'm off to match thread..sorry

I'm glad somebody is happy with the team selection. I can only see Giggs and Nani ripping the full backs apart.

4-0. It's going to be ugly.
