Maybe a tad optimistic but what the hell after 7 points from the last 9, we can but dream.
Achieving 6th would be a remarkable result given what happened earlier this season but I think its what the team should aim for.
I would see us in a race with Sunderland, Liverpool and Everton. I dont think Newcastle, Bolton etc will stay the distance.
At the moment Sunderland are in the driving seat with 37 points from 24 games but they have 4 games against the top 5 and 2 away to Pool and Everton.
Liverpool have 29 points from 23, 5 games against the top 5 and 2 away against the pack (us included , last game of season)
We have 28 from 24, only 2 games left against the top 5 and 1 Home vs Pool, 1 away v everton
Everton have 27 from 23 games, 4 against the top 5 and 2 home vs us and Sunderland
I would estimate that 58 points will be enough for 6th this year, meaning we need 30 - 9 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses - am I mad ?

To end up in 6th after our, well... 'interesting' season so far would be pretty incredible. Has a team ever been in the bottom 3 and finished in 6th position at the end of the season?
Hopefully we can make the top 8.
-
I said that I would be happy with 10th or above this season, due to the way incidents manifested themselves. So anything above that is a bonus.
Gregory did something similar in his initial season, so lets just go for it
-
I am kind of hoping for an Everton style 2nd half to the season.
It's not impossible that we could finish 6th, but we need to just concentrate on each game as it comes.
-
When you look at Blackburn with 3 more points than us and in 7th place - 7th or maybe 8th should be our objective.

We did it, under DOL.
I too would be happy with top 8. Our fixtures ar easily the best, though.
-
Mid-table mediocrity will do for this season
-
3 points off 7th now and if arsenal win league cup then 7th could qualify for Europe if fa cup is won by a top 4 team , let's aim high and see where we get!
-
If the four sides below us all win their games in hand we're back down to 18th.
Don't want to come across as pessimistic, but I think we still need to pay more attention to what's below us than what's above.
-
Personally think we'll finish 7th, would be more than happy with that after the first half of the season
-
id settle for 12th or above after the start we had. Hopefully im rong though and we go on a good run to the end of the season and maybe sneak into 6th or 7th place!
-
I wondered how long it would take an optimist to mention this.
Let's just keep winning as much as possible and let GH get his style of play across to all members of the squad. I think that's the important thing from now until the end of the season. GH preparing his team for next season.
-
Nothing like getting carried away....
Sunderland will struggle to maintain their points ratio, they haven't replaced Bent, leaving them with Gyan as their only fit striker.
-
6th? Pah! Where's your ambition? Champions League here we come.
-
Don't temp fate! I'd take 10 th to be honest.
-
Villa fans are very fickle. Aren't we?

Agree. Take each game as it comes. Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate.

Fickle to the bone son.
The one thing we can't do now is to become complacent. Our fixtures aren't too bad, if we can string another couple of wins together, taking a draw at United, we'll be right back up there. Like someone said, I don't think Sunderland will be able to keep going to the end of the season.
It makes a change to the MO'N routine of fast start, poor finish that we've been so used to over the last few years. If anything, I'd rather it be like this, with us doing an Everton and picking up the points when it really matters.
-
I agree that we need to take it one step at a time but there is no denying that 6th is up for grabs for any team in the bottom half who can put a run together. The last couple of weeks make it look like we might be able to do that, the previous couple of months having made it look like we were far from being able to.
It's Sunderland's to blow but I have faith that they'll do so. I think our main rival will be Liverpool. Maybe a play-off for 6th last game of the season?

I am very happy to be referred to as an optimist. 6th is a real stretch, no denying that, but worth aiming for.
I think if we can get to 40 points as soon as poss then why not 'look up' and go for it ; we have the players to get win after win aagainst who we will be playing
-
take each game as it comes and hopefully at the end of the day we willl get the the right results....

Do you have many monkeys in Duxford?
I have seen a few in Sawston. At least I think they were monkeys

you know Sawston very well Damon, I was in the Alma a few weeks ago and bumped into a mate of yours called John(I think) he told me where to buy some lovely farm produce ;-)

The thing is, if the league was as stretched out pointwise as it is normally, being 9 points behind 6th with 14 games to go, having signed a top goalscorer and looking like we are starting to perform would not seem as crazy.
It's the fact that there are so many other teams in the same position as us.
However, I dont think many, if any, are as well equipped as us to make a go for 6th.
After all, the point difference between us and 6th is less than the difference between Man Utd and Chelsea and I wouldnt write Chelsea out of the title race just yet.
-
I am cautiously optomistic for top 8, however after the frighteneing position we have been in I would take where we are right now.
-
It's pretty open this season and 6th is not too much to ask. We now have a very good squad of fit players and the thing which would stop us now would be the attitude of the players. As long as these can maintain some focus and the belief that they can beat anybody then I most certainly think that 6th is on.
I would never want to rule Everton out of finishing strongly, but there's a stink about them this year. They've had hardly any injury problems but have continually been crap or chucked away points. I wouldn't be surprised to see Moyes go at the end of the season.
-
I was thinking the same last night. I went on points predictor on BBC and had us finishing 6th. Then I tweaked it slightly, changing a win at Blackpool for a draw and a win over LIverpool into a defeat and we finished 10th. That is testament to how tight it is and is likely to be right until the last day. Shame we are away to our nemesis and champions elect next as we coud have built up some real momentum had we had Fulham, Blackpool, Bolton etc now rather than after a likely beating at OT. I hope we can bounce back from said defeat (should it happen) and go on a run afterwards. Hopefully we can beat Blackburn in the FA cup before we go to United and build yet more confidence.
In conclusion:
6th is possible, but so is 16th and the two may only be 2 or 3 wins apart.
-
Villa fans are very fickle. Aren't we?
Should't that be in orange?
-
We're bored of finishing 6th.
-
We'll finish top 8.
-
If only those two Sunderland results had gone our way as they should have, then the whole picture would be very different.
Success/Failure has a very fine line.....I think 7th or 8th for us if we continue to improve
-
I would be happy with top ten considering where we are and what's gone on before the season started, i don't think we will get anything from OT but the rest of them seem winnable.
-
Won't it be great if we finish 6th and get to Wembley, it'll be just like old times.
Well, last year anyway. :)
-

This is very true. My biggest concern is what our points to game ratio is between the Man City game and the end of the season. That is a guage of how good we are with Bent, Gezza's othjer signings and him having a full squad to pick from. If that's top 6 form, or even top 4, it won't matter exactly where we finish as it'll point to what we can expect next season.
-
back to back wins do not make a 6th place finish.

back to back wins do not make a 6th place finish.
It's not about that though is it? I don't think anyone is suggesting that we are now a shoe in for 6th because of the last 2 games. It isn't just 2 wins it's Darren Bent arriving, Jean Makoun coming in, players returning from injury AND 2 wins, one of which over a title challenging team that we NEVER seem to beat. It is interesting to see us just 3 points off 7th compared to where we were 4 days ago. Why can't we have a bit of optimism now to help lift the gloom? Particularly with our run in. :)
-
I'm just glad that we're not as lightly to stagnate around the March/April time as we have in recent years.
-
Top nine and i'll be content this season. Next season we push for CL again.
-

I'd prefer to win it ourselves (and finish 6th). All things are possible
-

Not last year.
-
back to back wins do not make a 6th place finish.
How marvellously insightful.
It would take a lot of things to go almost perfectly between now and the end of the season to finish sixth, so while I don't expect it to happen I don't think we should rule it out.
-
Villa fans are very fickle. Aren't we?
Can we ban the F word? I'm sick of seeing it! (no offense to you by the way)
-
I'd take a top 8 finish now but I reckon we may end up in the 9-12th area!
-

they do if they carry on in that way
-
Lets just get 40 points first

Lets just get 40 points first
Yep, two games ago we were very much in the thick of a relegation battle. In two games time, we might be again. There's certainly potential for us to push up the table but I'm taking each game as it comes.
-
Don't think we can finish 6th although Sunderland have Chelsea, Stoke, Spurs, Everton and Arsenal as their next 5 games...
We can finish 7th though.
-
One step at a time. Any result other than a loss at Man utd would be a major stepping stone in points and confidence ........
-
If we do finish 6th I can't wait for the Europa league play-off against Rapid Vienna
