Ah bollocks. I really hope we don't pay for this. Bizarre tactic, 4-4-2 with no central creativity and two strikers one of whose effort at least is always suspect, the other on occasionally suspect. There is no creativity in the centre of this team - and no, Petrov doesn't count. A bizarre selection.

Since Carew hasn't 'got in' for god knows how long, I wish I could share your excitement. So much hinges on what sort of mood he is in given the line up and that worries me greatly. Hope I am eating my words in a couple of hours......

Big decision to bring Carew back, bizarre decision to drop Cueller when he has been our most consistent defender this season (which is not saying a lot) but at least theres no Pires and we start with 11.

At least we've got 2 fullbacks who can actually offer something going forward for the first time in ages. Formation looks better when you factor that in.

Right then, time for Gabby and Carew to put in a performance.

Pretty obvious our threat is going to come from balls into the box.

I suppose on paper he sees this as his first choice - mostly senior pros- selection. Webcam nothwithstanding.

Don't understand Carlos being out and I think I might have dropped Wee Barry in if it wasn't a Small Heath bloodfest. Petrov/NRC better be fired up and let's hope Downing has a good'un. Impressed with him this season.

I can see Marc riding some pretty hairy tackles an'all. They will give him plenty of verbal too. NRC might have to step in. A lot depends on JC.

Right now I think we need Carew with Young and Heskey out, and Gabby up front on his own just isn't working.

It is the sort of fixture under O'Neill I would have gone for a Villa win without thinking about it, but now the way things are going and with Birmingham being strong at home, I think it end a draw which is no good for us right now.

2-2

Carew and Albrighton for us

Bentey and Jerome for them

Johnson for Collins, Gardner for Petrov, Hleb for Reo Coker,

Not sure i agree with that.  We are 19th in the league.
How many of our players would you swap for theirs?

Johnson for Collins, Gardner for Petrov, Hleb for Reo Coker, Foster for Friedel (partly because he's younger). On current form Jerome is more of a threat than Agbonlahor.

Ridgewell and Clark are pretty similar.  Ridgewell edges in experience.

Downing, Walker and Albrighton i'd keep and Carew(on the odd occasion he cares is better than Zigic.

This is going on this seasons form.

Sorry Ozz but that's nonsense. If they cant put in a half decent shift in a lock derby against a relegation rival then something's serious wrong.  If we carry on not scoring, we'll go down.

They've at least got the bottle for a relegation fight, we look like we're going down without a whimper, while the players tell themselves it's all fine, they're too good to go down, we'll still finish 6th.

After a bright start, we are conceding midfield - Petrov anonymous

I would get John 'I may be bigger than you but I don't half play like a big girl's blouse' Carew off as he has fallen into his usual hop, skip and jump into a player, giving away a foul' routine, shift Gabby up front and beef up midfield

Clark awful positionally, Walker great going forward, dodgy at the back

Albrighton really needs to learn the art of defence as he is very, very worrying in and around our box...

Our formation and tactics are all wrong, the only purpose of playing gabby on the wing is to cover Bentley, he aint doing it, there is no movement in front of the ball from us, they are winning the midfield and to me look the better team,

We tried Gabby out wide against Sunderland and we lost.  Gabby didn't get in that game and everyone on here and the commentators at the game could see it wasn't working, everyone but Houllier could see it wasn't working and today he has done it again.  I have no faith in his tactics.  Gabby 87th minute hearder for the 3rd time in a row?  Not if he is on left midfield duty.   CHANGE IT HOULLIER!!  :o

Not only does Gabby on the wing not work, but he has a record of scoring against these monkeys. Why, then, are we doing our best to minimise his threat by playing him in midfield? Sorry, but it's the manager's fault. It actually defies belief.

Pretty awful stuff. So much for the football improving under Houllier. This is Stoke without the guts. Anyway diabolical tactics. Gabby on the left when Carew and himself looked dangerous up top together. Reo Coker and Petrov have been so poor. when they hide our centre halves have no option but to go long. Collins and Dunne have been excellent to be honest. Bad mistake from Walker but he has been good going forward.

Birmingham have been totally on top in midfield but Derbyshire up front by himself is terribly negative from McLeish. Murphy is rank at left back we need to target him more.

We need to be brave. Go back to 442. If Delph is on the bench I'd bring him in for Petrov. At least Reo Coker is getting tackles in

No, I think the tactics are about right, really. I think were Carew being a little more effective a a target man, he'd be able to bring Gabby into play more often. As it stands, the ball is just bouncing off him time and again, giving Birmingham more posession than is comfortable.

We've had a few decent chances but failed to put them away. Going forward with the full backs and Albrighton we've looked bright to little avail.

They have done their homework attacking down the right gabby not tracking back leaving Clark exposed. Negative from Houllier need gabby in the middle. Petrov has to be replaced, key midfielder done nothing and slows every move down. We are playing narrow giving their midfied far too much room.

We can win this if Downing grows a pair. A more gutless prick i have yet to see in a Villa shirt.

Stephen Warnock ?

Downing is a decent player but a bit bland really. For all his attitude issues I'd have Ashley Young ahead of him always.

Fluke goal there. No one tracking Johnsons run

I think the Fonz is nowhere near good enough for Prem football, he is another Stefan Moore.  Unstoppable in the reserves but won't make the grade.  Of all the youngsters coming through he is the least likely to play at the top level imo.
