It means Gabby will definatly play upfront instead of the non scoring Ash?

Or do people think we will really miss him?

I am really looking forward to seeing Super Marc make his Derby debut!

1-1.

I predicted at the start of the season we'd draw both league games against them and lose there in the cup when that draw was made so 2/3 sadly right.

You can sure as hell be sure Houllier will go defensive in this.

If he did it at VP against them when he was still relatively new in the job and we were still in the top half by playing Clark, NRC and Sidwell as the midfield three, he'll certainly do it with his job on the line now.

I honestly think we'll sack him if we lose this one.

Front three picks itself really, Downing and Albrighton either side of Gabby, central trio of Petrov, NRC and maybe Hogg.

having Albrighton available for this one is a big plus - we missed him in both the previous games and he should make Carr / Ridgewell look like the mugs they are - backing us to win. Would love yesterday at Sheff U to have been Houlliers version of Notts Forest away in the third round for Fergie - if not for 20 years then at least 3 or 4 to to ship out the overpaid and under-delivering moaners and stamp his mark before Cowans / McAllister take the reins up

This game is bigger in many ways than the LC QF. They have a big game in the semi on tuesday which i hope West Ham give them a right battle and beat them of course. Losing this one dosent bare thinking about.
I predict a draw and wil take that. 2-2

Went for a draw.

Blues have won their last two games, but basically it's still two relatively poor teams scrapping for points in a local derby.  Crap 0-0, which wouldn't be the end of the world for us.

Title: Re: Small Heath Alliance v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: cdward on January 10, 2011, 09:46:04 AM
We really need our defence to tighten up on set pieces. If i was playing against us i would pepper long shots into the box for Zigic to knock down for Jerome, and just wait for Dunne and Collins to drop one of their usual clangers which will result in a goal for them, having said that Gabby loves this game.
If we can keep our concentration and not give away too many silly free kicks and corners we should be OK, if not we will lose.
Not confident so 1-1.
Gabby and Jerome

I am really looking forward to seeing Super Marc make his Derby debut!

As good as Ashley Young is, this role they seem determined to enforce on us creates an imbalance in the side.
Play wingers on the wing and on the correct wing!! If anyone was to move I would play downing in a more central role as he has a better range of passing.

0-1 Villa Agbonlahor 94th minute

If we can keep 11 players on the pitch - and error free - for 90 minutes then we could get a positive result from this.

Gone for a draw, but am holding out hope of sneaking it.

A point i'd forgotten of course is that at least with Walker in we can 'rest' Collins, it seemes to help the fat man.  And if we are lucky enough (lol) to have signed Bridge on loan maybe Clark to replace NRC in CM? Let Petrov move further forward, his passing seems to be a little more competent since his return and the attacking players could do with several hundred chances to find the net.

Lets be optimistic. I'm going for a Villa win (mainly because I cant deal with the thought of losing to them and being in the relegation zone).

0-2 Albrighton 12 min, Gabby 89 min. Blues missed penalty 82 min with a straight red for Coker.

A win here would be a great result for all the wrong reasons as well as the usual right ones. They'll definitely try to drag us down to their level on the pitch but I genuinely think our class will shine through, unfortunately we won't convert this into goals and go down 1-0.

Albrighton has spoken before about watching Villa as a kid and always supporting the club, so think you are barking up the wrong tree there Sheldon.

Gary Gardner has been confirmed as a villa fan by a few as well. Not that it really matters all that much, after all Craig was a boyhood Villa until Blues came in for him, and suddenly well... he sold his soul to the devil.

In terms of allegiances though, just look at the Everton supporting Liverpool players over the years that have been sensation for Liverpool.

My heart says we will win 1-0. My head says don't think about it, just wait and see.

I am really looking forward to seeing Super Marc make his Derby debut!

Yes and so am I. Predicted a win which is far more positive than I've been last couple of months. Mind you, I thought we'd win the cup one as well

Carew, Delph, Ireland, Salifou, Warnock, Davies, Beye and L Young haven't featured for the first team for a few weeks (or more) now and I was surprised none were in the reserve squad last night.  Are all unavailable through injury or are some on the verge of leaving.  Any one got any ideas.

Gary Gardner has been confirmed as a villa fan by a few as well. Not that it really matters all that much, after all Craig was a boyhood Villa until Blues came in for him, and suddenly well... he sold his soul to the devil.

They play horrible ale house football out of design.

We play something which sometimes looks like that out of disorganisation.

In the LC match we absolutely played them off the park.

My team would be

Friedel
Walker Cuellar Dunne Warnock
Petrov NRC
Albrighton Ireland Downing
Agbonlahor

Id like to see Ireland given a shot with a strong midfield pair behind him. He has class in there somewher, even if he is a bit of a tool. If not him, I think Bannan could be the link man. I wanted to see him there for half an hour on Saturday, but no such luck.

Maybe give Carew a chance to bag a few before he heads to Smethwick?

given that they managed to lose to 10 men and Foster did a very decent impression of Carson for the second West Ham goal, I am now worried that Small Heath may have used up a large quota of this week's crapness and bad luck to boot - can see them sneaking it against the run of play. Either way, as S-H are involved, it's probably best watched on ceefax, they do seem somehow to make any game cack.

I'm not just saying this because Carr is a small heath player, but he really does look like a neanderthal. Always has an angry looking expression on his neanderthal-looking face.

We really should beat this rabble on Sunday, but I fear we'll concede in the final 10 mins yet again because we are suffering pyschologically in those important last few mins.

Absolutely, if he went on all fours, he wouldn't look out of place - in fact, I'm surprised he evolved to walk on two legs.

Re. Sunday, new game - keep the ball on the ground, play Gabby / Downing / Albrighton and if they're on song, we can definitely do them.

The referee for the match will be Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Wear)

Hopefully there will be a repeat of the last Birmingham derby he oversaw, as we convincingly triumphed 5-1 over Blues. It will be his 3rd Villa game, and we are yet to register a point with Clattenburg in charge this season. Birmingham are also yet to win with him in charge this season.

The assistants will be Adam Watts (yellow flag) and Scott Ledger (chequered flag). Michael Oliver will be 4th official.

They wanted to give us even less, we argued, a compromise was reached to cut both our allocation and their numbers near us.

When? Please don't say Blackburn at home in the semi's was a pitch invasion... I hope no-one is going to compare that to small heath's pitch invasion. We just made it to the final of the league cup, happy fans were on the pitch but remained near the Holte End united in being happy and singning songs. I can't believe you've said that.

ok you're moving the goal posts now i see .

Change Blackburn for a number of other clubs who might've brought a bigger following, now do think that pitch invasion would've still passed off peacefully ?

It did, it was years ago, perhaps as much as five. Pompey weren't in the Prem yet. Whoever it was, it wasn't Bentley.

Good signing for Blues though, to be fair.

Good news for us that Dann is out...any success they have had over the past 2 seasons has been built on that settled back 4. It will be disrupted now, so hopefully we can take advantage.

Worried about Bentley though. He will go back to being billy big bollocks and that was when he was at his best for Blackburn. Could be a massive coup for Blues.

Really? They are what one point above us? I would say that there's not a lot in it. They are tough to break down, thier style doesn't change home or away but we do have the ability to turn in a performance like we did vs Chelseas and Man Yoo, whereas they don't. Get them chasing the game and we are more than capable of giving them a good twatting.

Not worried about Bentley (famous last words). When was the last time he played for the first team? Unless he's suddenly turned into Messi overnight I am not overly worried about him, if indeed he starts...

I was with some friends in a restaurant and Craig was in there. I spoke to him (really nice lad) but while I was at the bar one of my mates asked him if he was a VilLa fan and he said yes. Why wouldnt I believe him? The bullshitting scrote.
Anyway, I'm pretty certain Gary is. I asked one of the academy staff who laughed and said "No, this time we're sure he's one of you lot".

Wouldn't really bother me that much anyway. As long as he did the business on the pitch. To be honest I'd rather he be a bluenose than a Man Utd fan or something.

There was no need for Craig Gardner to give it 'I'm a Bluenose, always have been' when we wellied him out of B6.

Whether Gary is or not has an air of couldntgiveafuckabiilty as far as I'm concerned.

I've mellowed a bit on that, he'd just joined that lot and they are far less sophisticated than us, he'd been quoted numerous times saying he was a Villa supporter and that really wasn't going to endear him to the chimps at StA. He was bound to play on his family's affliction.

He's Blues. According to his uncle anyway. And that's straight from the horse's mouth.

Couldn't care less who he supports. He's a Villa player.
Mind you he wouldn't be the first born and bred Bluenose to turn down the chance to play for Small Heath so they could sign for their more illustrious neighbours from Villa Park. Villa are an obsession to them.

Who would not say that to wind a Villa fan up. HE is telling the OS he is Villa, which would be making the same mistake as his brother did, exclaiming his boyhood support for Villa before switching.

I'd take a draw here on recent form, especially with the Hammers playing Arse and Wolves at Citeh.  Reckon we can beat Citeh at home with crowd behind us.  4 points from them two would do me.

Sheldon, sorry to upset you ;D. The League Cup runners up have never qualified for Europe, its only the winners.
If the league cup winners qualify through league placing, then the european place goes down to the next league place.
Its only the FA cup runners up that get a europa league place if the cup winners have already qualified.
Its always been like this.
As for sunday, we will win 2-0!

Inter Cabel-Tel. Wow. That brings back memories of Aberystwyth Town's famous 1-0 home defeat to them, despite the fact they had gone bust and lost their entire squad the day before , leaving their team involving nobody over the age of about 17.

Friedel, Walker, Cuellar, Dunne, Clark, Albrighton, Delph, Petrov, Reo-Coker, Downing, Agbonlahor.

A surprisingly comfortable 2-0 victory.

Gabby and then Delfouneso off the bench.

Blues haven't had to face Albrighton yet so I think we'll get some success there.  Gabby will as he always does will undoubtedly score and I fancy Downing to nick one too.  3 - 1 to the Villa, quite confident.
Hate to say it, but been pretty accurate with the last few blues villa predictions.... This time though, I reckon we will give them a spanking - 3-1 Villa.

3-1 Villa.

no pressure....

Last time I checked, you actually have to win the trophy to get into Europe. Hence we only qualified for Europe after league placings, not through being runner up.

And I doubt it won't make any difference to the overrall attendance because their support is so dire. I thought only 'proper Brummies' supported Birmingham City? Where are all these 'real Brummies' hiding? There's over 1 million people in Birmingham and they'll have a gate of 24k at the sty... when you think that club can't get anymore laughable, they do.

I thought last time Blues were in Europe was the annual players holiday weekend to Benidorm.
Seriously though, IMO Blues have done some very decent transfer business, I have always rated Keane, he scores whoever he plays for and always makes things happen. Bentley is a good signing too. OK they are players at the twilight of their careers but still mighty fine additions to any squad. I would have loved Keane to have come to us, even for a couple of seasons.
Ash and Emule are out and Carew does not inspire me at all, I fear for this one, it could easily go 3-0 though God knows I hope that does not happen.

Gabby on the wing was and is a disgraceful decision.
If we are to persist with this continental football and play passes around the pitch then it alienates Gabby even more. We can't expect him to receive a pass in a tight space then pick a pass. He isn't that type of player and simply cannot do it.

I voted draw, but to be honest I don't care!

This is a completely unimportant game at this stage of the season. It should be a win, but the fact that they are from down the road means it's a sideshow we could do without, as the fact that it's a derby levels the playing field.

If we win we are far from safe, if we lose we are far from down.

The important games start in February.

Quotes from centre half we're chasing's agent:

January 16, 2011
EMIR SPAHIC is stalling on a move to Aston Villa.

Bosnia's captain fears Gerard Houllier will be sacked if Birmingham win the Midlands derby and the deal will crash.

The Montpellier centre-half's agent, Bekim Dino Pasalic, said: "Houllier wants Spahic at Villa. But after he lost against Sunderland, his job is not secure any more.

"If his team wins the derby, he will stay as Villa manager and be given a free hand to buy anyone he wants. If he loses, he will be sacked and the Spahic transfer will be off.

"I know the Montpellier president said Spahic can't leave. But I spoke to him and he was realistic.

"If Villa's offer is good enough, he will let Spahic go to England. Now we are waiting for the Birmingham result to see what to do next."

So, it's down to the players - if they don't turn up with a fighting performance they clearly don't want houllier....

Sounds like an agent that knows bugger all about what is going on but is making assumptions. He won't be sacked if we lose, after just getting in the midfielder he wants to add stability without giving it a few games with him in the side.

Big plus that Carew is playing.  As others have said he must have worked for his place in training and he should put in a performance whether he's thinking of staying (improbable) or putting himself in the shop window (likely).  Feel marginally more confident but still bricking it - we desperately need points.

I think Houllier has got the selection spot on, 4-4-2 means we'll be going for the win.
4-5-1 like them and we'd have another game like at our place.
Lets wait and see how they line up and play.......it looks like  4 4 2 on paper

They should be much easier to smash up, how thoughtful of them.

WTF?  Will GH not learn?  Gabby to be isolated on the left just as he was against Sunderland.
