Title: Omar Cummings
Post by: Norm Crandles on January 06, 2011, 01:51:46 AM
If this has been posted previously I`m sorry.

Despite the opposition defence not being PL standard this kids looks better than anyone in our squad.

He can certainly finish - that's for sure. Doesn't matter which league you're in, his ability to put the ball in the back of the net is pretty good. Got speed, awareness, powerful strike and doesn't mind putting his head on the line quite literrally.

Have we actually signed him yet?

From what I,ve seen ( admittedly limited ) he looks quite good even taking into consideration the lesser rated opposition , reminds me a bit of a younger version of  Ricardo Fuller , coincidentally ,also Jamaican and the type of player we desperately need .      Lets face it , with ' Ivanhoe ' out for 3 games (?) we really don,t have too many strong -man options up front , so this guy maybe worth a punt . Last I heard we were waiting for this work permit to be cleared ................Godzvilla .....
p.s.......Have you got any candles Mr Crandles ?  ( in joke ) .

Pace, good control, excellent finisher, good vision, irrespective of the quality of the opposition in those clips he must be worth a try

If we decide to take him on loan he'll need a work visa.

He'd need one just to come on a trial. A short term one, but I wouldn't be surprised if he has a British parent or some such.

Being bored at work I watched the highlights of him on youtube and he appears to have it all. No matter what league you play in pace and first touch are great qualities to have. If we gave Salifou a contract then this guy deserves something.....

im not sure whats going on, i think houllier is trying to get cash to buy a striker before he takes omar as randy may say no to buying one after we loan omar if that makes any sense. i dont think we have a great deal to spend, my bets about 10 but houllier is trying to stretch randy to 15 min. that should cover 6 ish for mid 7 ish for a cf and 2 for a left back,

i was saying thats what i thinks happening, and as the center mid we are after is 7 million asking price and cisse was being thrown around in the press as 5-6 and traoure as 7-10 and geds history for being kind of pedantic when it comes to fees that hes probably tryin to get the price down, and taking cummings now b4 buying will make randy less inclined to open the chequebook as that will be 6 senior strikers on the books at that point, oh another fact, easy this counting lark,

Main worry at 28 is why no one has plucked him from the MLS before.

What's his record like for Jamaica? Has he scored against the US and Mexico for example?

YouTube can make Maloney look like a class act... That said he has a good first touch, decent pace and strength, and he plays with his head up, half of those highlights were him setting up others.  Not much sign of a left foot.  With our options up front we certainly can't be picky, got to be worth a punt if he can get a work permit.  Has nyone seen him play 90 minutes?

Finishing should go with the name. Despite his name though I doubt that he can equal Gabby's feat of 3 buns in the oven within the same period of time ;)

Joking aside Cummings is here on trial. That's a far stretch from imagining him getting into the first team straight away and scoring a bundle of goals before March.

I hope he impresses and does well but what we need is a striker that can come in immediately and do the business.

Colorado Rapids forward Omar Cummings has been training with English Premier League club Aston Villa since December 31. Today, he provides a look into his first two weeks with the Birmingham, England club.

"Well, first off, being on the plane heading to England, I was kind of two minds. One part of me wanted to be back in Jamaica hanging with my wife, and family and friends. But this was an opportunity to train and play with Aston Villa, and you just don’t say no to that – not at this stage of my career.

I didn’t get to meet the team until my third day at Villa with them having so many games. But putting the gear on for the first time and heading to my first practice was exciting, and cold.

There isn’t a lot of difference in training sessions from what we do in Colorado. At the Rapids, we pretty much do the same things leading up to games. The intensity is high and there are a lot of quality footballers.

I would say I’ve been accepted pretty well at the club, from both the players and staff alike. Two players that I would say I connected with immediately were Brad Guzan and Emile Heskey.

Every player knows about MLS and many ask me questions. Some even express interest that one day they would like to play in MLS. However not very many knew that I came from the championship team.

I’ve seen one home game, which I watched from the press box with one of the Villa media personnel. I didn’t go to the reserve game but the coach did congratulate them on a job well done, and stressed their improvement in the last couple of months. (NOTE: Villa's Reserves defeated Arsenal's Reserves 10-1 earlier this week).

I’m staying in a hotel called New Hall Hotel. In fact, Arsenal just stayed here for their game against Birmingham. It’s shaped like a castle and is rumored to be haunted – so say some of the players that have stayed there before. Much of my down time involves watching football games in TV and the ‘net.

Birmingham is a city shared by two teams, Birmingham City and Aston Villa FC. I’ve taken taxis to and from practice almost every day in my two and half weeks here, and I haven't met one taxi driver that supports Birmingham - all so far have been for Villa.

I would say the best part of being here is just being in the locker room and on the practice pitch with all these amazing players, learning to be a better professional.

The worst thing – other than missing my wife and my wedding anniversary – is that I’ve been here two and a half weeks and have seen the sun once!"

Its not that he failed to get a work permit but it would take too long to go through so the amount of time we'd actually have him before he had to go back to the US made it a pointless exercise. That was my reading of it anyhow.

Will Omar be here a bit longer after all?

Colorado Rapids striker Omar Cummings impresses Villa

Cummings played under ex-Liverpool winger John Barnes for Jamaica
Colorado Rapids striker Omar Cummings has impressed on trial at Aston Villa, according to manager Gerard Houllier.

The Villa boss will make a decision "soon" on whether to take the 28-year-old on a short-term loan deal.

Jamaica international Cummings, who was Rapids' leading striker in 2010, could link up with Villa until March when the Major League Soccer season begins.

Houllier stated: "I see Omar getting better with every training session. I will make a decision about him soon."

Cummings has been training with Aston Villa since 31 December and Houllier said that a work permit would be needed were he to be offered a loan deal.
