3-1 Heskey, Ash and Gabby. Bent for them. I don't want to get too carried away and suddenly predict clean sheets as well as a win.

I'm not getting carried away. Sunderland will be much trickier than we think I reckon though I hope I'm wrong naturally...

This is a must win.

I'm not going to let today's result lead me to any premature expectations of some great leap forward.  I expect a scrappy 2-1 win not dissimilar to the Albion game.

2-1 defeat.

Bent with both of theirs,

1 - 1  hope we can win though, especially after todays performance. It would be good for full backing from all  send Mr Potato Head back home with his tail between his legs, especially after his aproach for Downing via the press.

Sunderland win 2-0, Bent then Gyan from the bench and a stupid celebration because for some reason he thinks he can dance but looks like a right cock!

This won't be easy, they're good at the back and their strikers are dangerous, we need to take todays high and get at them from the start, an early goal and we'll do them 2-1

I don't think they're much cop. Certainly not away from home. They stole a point last season, but will get turned over on Wednesday now we have some belief to go back with our exprienced players.

I'll go for a very tense 90 minutes and a 1-0 win for the Villa.

Dunne to score the winner in front of the Holte in the last minute and then run to the centre spot and whip his shirt off a la Ginola revealing a newly acquired six pack to the Villa Park faithful...

A scrappy 2-1 win to Villa. 2-0 up and coasting then concede a goal in the last 10 minutes and panic sets in, but we manage to hold out (just).
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Sunderland Pre-Match Thread
Post by: SoccerHQ on January 02, 2011, 11:34:06 PM
Sunderland are 6th so should be respected and we'll certainly struggle to keep a clean sheet against the pace of Bent, Wellbeck and Gyan imo. Bruce also has a very decent managerial record at VP, one defat in 7 I think.

That all said, that 3-0 win at Chelsea they had was a fluke as since then they've lost at Wolves and drawn 0-0 at Fulham.

So hopefully 3 goals at the Bridge will give us more confidence going forward. 2-1 us.

I'd bring in albrighton for gabby. I think I'd play it safe and stick with the same back 4, even though it does mean playing with 4 centre halves. Has the look of a tight 1-1 to me. Sunderland's only away win was at Chelsea. I reckon we might just sneak this 2-1 with a late-ish winner. Heskey and Collins.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Sunderland Pre-Match Thread
Post by: supertom on January 03, 2011, 10:17:33 AM
They've got 3 decent forwards who've scored goals this season, so we need to watch whichever two play. I have no idea who's fit for them or not though.

But if we keep up the same level as last time out, then we should get 3 points.

2-1 Villa
Heskey
Agbonlahor.

If we can i hope we go with the same line up as for the Chelsea game, we need to build a bit of consistency in the team. 3 points is a must from this game but Sunderland are tough opposition so it won't be easy.

2-1 to the Villa.

We need a win, I don't care if its 1-0 as long as we win. We need to get a momentum going. Results first, a few new faces and then the quality football will follow......please!

Thought I had read that Bent was injured and not playing.  May be wrong though.

If we can keep the same team as yesterday that will boost confidence and should see us get another hard fought victory.

However they will not be easy and I hope the crowd get behind the lads and not on their backs!

You're right, Bent is doubtful with an eye injury and Wellbeck is also doubtful with a knee injury - add to that Cattermole is definitely out and they look a bit weak.

I'd definitely opt for the same team, if they play 4-3-3 they do seem to get very narrow so the 4 natural centre halves could be helpful in that regard.

Saying that, Gyan was on the bench last game... So who knows.

I would bring Albrighton in for Gabby too, and only use Gabby for last half hour for Heskey or Young depending on fitness. The delivery of Albrighton is our best route to goal, so we need him in at home for me, and he should be rested, and well bollocked for silly piddling about on the ball at Chelsea on the edge of his box in the 90th fecking minute!

Difficult one to judge tactically. Sunderland this season remind me of us during MON's second season - exciting, but given the chance to be because teams would attack and leave themselves open to the counter. When teams sit back against them, they have difficulties in breaking them down, they get a little cross-and-hope. To be honest, we're good on the counter as well, so this is one of those games where the always important first goal could actually help it end up 3-0 to one side or the other.

Cant agree with Cuellar at right back particularly with the emphasis at home to create chances. Did you see his effort of a cross towards the end of the game against Chelsea? Luke Young if fit or Beye/Lichaj to come in and Collins to miss out.

Id like to see Ashley Young return out wide and pair Gabby with Heskey up top and really go at them.

This is a massive game.  Yes there are lots of games left, but actually occupying a relegation spot could shatter our already fragile confidence.  Hopefully we'll romp to a straighforward 3-0 win, but I fear we're in for a tense, nervy evening.

It's all part of the new vogue for exaggeration.

If it was the final game of the season and we needed to win to stay up, then maybe you could argue that.

Although i like our youngsters i hope tonights team is similar to Chelsea game with more experience....then i hope our experience lives up to the task. We dont  need half a dozen bookings in the first 30 mins of a tense game

I'm going for 2-1 to us.  We'll go 2-0 up (Downing and Young) then they'll get one back with 10 minutes to go, and the H&V massive will all age about 30 years.  Something like that anyway.

There might well be the odd "oh blast" and "deary me".  But come on, let's just have a nice 3-0, first goal on 30 minutes, another just before half time, and a third on the hour.  Nice and relaxed, and my keyboard will be intact come the morning.

The experienced pros provided the platform, but it was still the youngsters who secured the draw in the end (Albrighton to Clark). I'd like a healthy mix, especially seeing as we've got some really bright prospects at Villa.

I dont know. Not only is Cattermole completely shit but he'd also give our midfield more room to play as he would be having a bath in the latter first/second half. On one hand its a shame he's not playing but on the other hand, somebody would be hurt. Difficult one.

3-2 Villa

End to end stuff for the first half, but somehow it's only 1-1. Second half calms down and we start to boss it and are 3-1 up by the 65th minute, they make a couple of changes to their system and we start to drop off and it's 3-2 by the 74th minute. We're all thinking 'here we go' and they dominate us, creating numerous chances but we somehow (via luck, deflections and an inform Friedel) manage to hold on for the three points.
