Title: Carlos Cueller, maybe there is hope!
Post by: Shrek on December 09, 2010, 11:10:25 AM
Houllier on the OS has commented on Cueller

"Habib is back as is Carlos. Regarding Carlos, he did some training last week with us and looked all right. That's why I took him and put him on the bench. I was pleased with him.

"We've won three games with him - Blackburn, Wolves and Burnley."

Surely this means he knows Cueller's qaulities and is considering changing the back four?

I hope Carlos plays. He's a very good Centre back.

He must be put in for Richard Bella Emberg Dunne.

Cuellar, Collins, Dunne and Young. Tightest defence in the league last season.

Cuellar, Collins, Dunne and Young. Tightest defence in the league last season.

Won't be again unless we go back to zonal marking.

Cuellar for Collins for me and when NRC is fit and Clark available I'd give Clark or even Davies a go ahead of Dunne.  I don't think Lichaj, Beye or Cuellar are better full backs than Warnock and Young, but I would look to sign a new left back in Jan.

Cuellar, Collins, Dunne and Young. Tightest defence in the league last season.

try man u, chelsea, liverpool first. the reason it was soo tight was we played with everyone behind the ball trying to counter attack, resulting in too many draws.

this season our defence have made individual error time ad time again.

I thought our meanest spell defensively last season involved Young Carlos Dunne and Warnock in December, around the OT win?  That's what I'd try again now.

I used to think that the sight of Carlos at full back was quite depressing last season. This season I find that the sight of Warnock at full back is depressing and at least Carlos was defensively solid even if he had nothing to offer going forward. Carlos in for Dunne, where he should be. I'd give Licaj a crack at right back and put Luke back on the left until Warnock can find some confidence.

Whoever plays in the back 4 will need a bit more cover from midfield though, as they have been exposed badly in recent games.

I don't think L Young is far behind Warnock in the out of form and low on confidence stakes so I wouldn't do that just yet, but I can see why others would.

Part of the problem is the reserves only play once in a blue moon (last game was 22nd of November).  So other than arranging behind-closed-doors games, he's going to lack match practice after being out for this long.

He must be put in for Richard Bella Emberg Dunne.

Its a race to the bottom between Dunne and Collins. I actually think the laters decision making and positioning has cost us more goals than Dunne's poor fitness and mobility problems.

I like Carlos though. He oozes reliability for me.

Heh heh, the same Cuellar that people on this site wanted to sell a matter of months ago, and now he is the messiah.  Fickleness personified.  Young is the poorer defender than Warnock.  He leaves honking big holes and pressure on the back two.  For me Dunne is the problem currently.  His defending and poor decision making is putting too much pressure on Collins.

Who wanted to sell him?

I think people have wanted him to play at centre half for two seasons solid now. The previous manager didn't and the current one hasn't had the opportunity.

How would Warnock find his confidence if he gets dropped.

Hmmm, I think widespread opinion in the summer was that Curtis Davies should be sold if we could get around £5m, sense being the other three were pretty solid and Ciaran Clark was ready to be 'centre-back No.4'.

In any case, there's nothing fickle about calling for Cuellar to start at CB. I'd say the central defensive situation has changed drastically in the last two months, from previously rock solid to near-shambles. Warrants a fit-again Cuellar to be recalled, IMO.

Wasn't the Cuellar debate mainly about the fact that he should've in a cb instead of rb?
For what its worth,i always thought he was the cb at the club.

MoetVillan,

Cuellar is a very good centre back, his first season wasn't great but he soon settled down and did well.

Most of the fuss was caused by that prick O'Neill playing him at Right Back.

Hello.

We cannot be any worse in defence, so Carlos will definatly be an improvement.

Cueller showed avaunt wolves what we have been missing, that grit and gile to see a game out!

I'd sell him. If they were all fit and in form he's the worst CB we have but given his age and contract he's probably worth a few quid.
Title: Re: Carlos Cueller, maybe there is hope!
Post by: JJ-AV on December 09, 2010, 03:58:28 PM
What? Davies and Clark are better than him now?

I sort of saw the logic in selling him in the Summer. He's shite at right back and if Dunne and Collins are the two then why keep someone on such big wages as third choice, especially when we went out of Europe.

But as an individual, he's arguably the best centre half we have. Him or Dunne when on top form, but we've not seen enough of Carlos there to judge.

He certainly deserves a run.

He's a player I've never taken to at all, slow, poor distribution and lacks presence. I'd play him on Saturday though and thats how much I think the other two have slipped.

He covered so much for Dunne and Collins last year that your opinion is distorted. It may be just coincidence but this season they have been shite because Carlos hasn't been there to cover their arses.

The central 2 have been poor, surely when that happens for a lengthy period then changes have to be made.
Time for Carlos to step in.

Houllier called Cuellar his 'collossus' and likened him to Jamie Carragher, then promptly dropped him! It can't have been because of form.

I can`t believe some are clamouring for Cuellar - does not say much for Dunne and Collins.

That's the whole bloody point.   Cuellar is a good center half, we need him in the team.  Dunne and Collins have made too many errors recently, we need to freshen up at the back.

No, he dropped him for the following game against Spurs. Cuellar was on the bench that day but got injured in training shortly afterwards. Dropping him after the Wolves game was ridiculous.

If Dunne continues to play whilst a fit Cuellar stays stuck on the bench it'll be one of the most baffling decisions in post & pre war footballing history.

Heskey, fair emuff.
