Interesting question a mate of mine put to us this morning (not that its ever going to happen of course)...
If you were Randy Lerner, and Martin O' Neill rang you last night after the game, apologised for the way he left, said he was way too hasty and wanted to give the job another crack - would you pay Houllier off and give MON his old job back?
In other words - Straight choice - who would YOU trust to get us out of this rut?
MON the motivator and hoofball merchant or GH who has us passing the thing at long last but without the results to show for it?
-
I'd be astonished if anyone would go for that.
-
No
-
A great big NO from me.
-
No.
-
No way
-
No brainer. No thank you
-
A big piss off, no.
-
I'd like some of the things MON can bring to the party -things we're definitely lacking at present.
Simple things such as organisation at the back and competence at set pieces. This time last year we had the best defensive record from set pieces, now we have one of (if not) the worst. We don't seem to be offering a threat attacking them either.
But I'm pretty certain managers other than O'Neill are capable of delivering the above and --in time- if Houllier isn't, I hope we can find one.
So it's a no for me.
-
If MON was to walk back in tomorrow I would put my mortgage on us not being relegated. Under Houllier, at present, I wouldn't be willing to take the bet.
-
No way!! And I d tell him to enjoy the Championship when he next gets a job
-
Sounds pretty unanimous then......
Does everyone feel the same way for the same reasons though?
Too much bad feeling? Don't trust him with the next 20mill in Jan? Fed up with the performances and favouritism?
(don't just say yes , yes and yes though) ;-)
-
We had long spells without victories under MON too.
-

Surely the overwhelming issue is that he's done it once and he'd probably do it again?
-
No **$%$ chance!
The shit we're in now is mostly down to the actions of MON (in my opinion).
-
No way!! And I d tell him to enjoy the Championship when he next gets a job
More likely we will be in the Championship next season than him.
-
A firm "thanks, but no thanks" from me.

Yeah, that's my worry. Unless Houllier gets a couple of gems in January, if Martin O Neill were to take the Newcastle job, I can see him/them finishing above us.
-
I'd say no but there is a vacancy going in the North East, do you need cab fare!
-
No from me. Even if I was remotely inclined to say yes, there are too many variables, it's all hypothetical.
-
The way MON left, if you allowed him back you might as well ask Steve Hodge to join him as assistant manager!
-
He'd get better from some of the mediocre players we're now saddled with I suspect, but no.
-
We had long spells without victories under MON too.
Funnily enough in his first season in charge (2006) didn't we go a long spell at exactly this period without a win.
I certainly remember at the time that got Coopers injury and a few others in a tiss about getting relegated.
-
No, nein, nada.
-
not a chance, he left us in a mess , we will be ok...
-
Id take him back yeah. And then id sack the selfish fucker tomorrow morning.
Fuckin cloughie wannabee failure prick, cock piss partridge.
(wipes spittle off chin and goes back to sleep)
-
I'd pack him and Houllier into a taxi and appoint Hughton.
-
No.
We might be shit thus far this season, but I've seen us play more "football" under Houllier in his time here than I did in the last entire season at home under O'Neill. In fact, under KM, we played more football in the first home game of this season than in the last dozen of last season.
I at least get the idea that, if we have a bit of luck and get our injured players back, we're moving towards a better level. Under Martin I just felt for two years that we were doing exactly the same all the time with no real improvement in technique or style, and he'd not done anything to suggest he could improve on it.
Getting away from that, though, there's also the pride of the club to think of, and there's no way we could take him back and expect not to look like an absolute laughing stock. It'd be the sort of thing Newcastle would do.
So, just to reiterate, that's a no.
-
Never. Not in a month of 12pm KO Sundays.
Martin NoDeal can rot as far as I'm concerned. Houll will sort it out.
-
Easiest question I have had to answer in ages - No
-
I think Reo would run up to him and drop the nut on him before Lerner could get the reply out ..........
-
Not a chance. Never go back works both ways. Let's draw a line under this topic and the bashing of GH (even though he deserved it) and move on. He and the team need our support.
-
Not a hope, I would trust him any further than I could spit him after the way he left. Aside from that, like a lot of others I was sick of the shite football we were playing. It's not too crash hot at the moment granted but I reckon with a few players back from injury and a couple of signings things will improve
-
No, too much water has passed under the bridge...
-
Nope.
-
Of course. Id go and pick him up
.....
.....
sit him and the French man in a room. and then tell em both to fuck off !!
-
Absolutely no chance.
-
I think Reo would run up to him and drop the nut on him before Lerner could get the reply out ..........
With Barry B head butting him in the bollox.
-
An astounding no from me. You'll get more unhappy players and I wouldn't trust him in this situation.
-
We might not have been in the mess we're in at the moment with MON but he wouldn't take us any further than he had anyway so a big fat no.
By the way, hello Mr Woo, I prefer to be a bit more informal and not use titles!
-
Absolutely not.....he left as a gutless quitter and in my eyes will remain that
-

(don't just say yes , yes and yes though) ;-)
It's actually because of the way he f*cked off and left us in the lurch. How saft would we look if we just took him back?
-
It's a bit like being publically humilating by a bird who was a decent shag.
She rings you up out of the blue and asks if you fancy a bit. As much as you might be tempted you have to have a bit of dignity.
-
MON wont be coming back,
but in the twilight world where this senario happens, it would be the tipping point for me,
i'm willing to see where GH gets us when he's had a few more games and brings one or two players in,
i am not willing to put up the the boring unexciting long ball shit that MON served up last season,
-
no way - i would have sacked him before he resigned in any case!
-
I'd have him back in a heartbeat.
;)
-
I'd much rather M'ON was still here, but taking him back is very different, wouldn't be appalled by it however.
-
No i wouldn't have him back we have got to move forward.
-
From someone who passionately supported him-NO WAY. Regardless of reason for leaving in he dropped us right in it. I will never forgive him.
-
hell no...
but i would string him along so that he had to apologise publicly for his appalling behaviour, and grovel for the job back...
and then tell him via the press to do one...
-
I'd rather have a decent manager thanks
-
no way - i would have sacked him before he resigned in any case!
Why? For finishing 6th, and reaching a Cup Final and a semi Final?
I'm glad your not our chairman.
-
It all depends why MON left and if he is the one who should apologise (as opposed to Randy & co)

Regardless of this, it would be a NO from me. MON had run out of ideas and lacked the flexibility and imagination to take us any further. While I have reservations about Houllier at least there is a chance he can take us to the next level.
-
Obviously can't go back and can't see that either side would ever want to.
But I just want to wake up in the holiday flat in Bulgaria without a text from my brother telling me that O'Neill had resigned and Milner definitely leaving.
-
NO WAY JOSE!!!!! I want to see what Houllier can do with a fully fit team/squad. Something which we haven't seen yet if my memory serves me correct?
-
reason id have sacked him clampy is i did not think he was capable of taking the club any further - not saying he did a shit job but he had taken us as far as he could in my opinion - it was time to part company.
martin did a decent job for us given the amount he spent , but by no means was he a great manager!
-
Congratulations though to Mr Woo for producing the most one-sided negative response to a thread since someone came out with "Steve Hodge, was he just misunderstood?"

Very good.
I must admit to being a little surprised at the landslide, when the question was originally posed it was more a 60/40 'no'.
But then again, immediately after a poor result you may get a false swing. Oo-er missus.
-

Sorry about that mate, its a user name I've used on other non-Villa related forums for years.
No intention to nick yours. ;-)

Something like;
"If you were Martin O'Neill, and Randy Lerner rang you last night after the game, apologised for the way they forced you out of the club, said they were way too hasty and wanted you to give the job another crack - would you give up your beach recliner and take your old job back?"

All we need now is a Dr Wu and I'll be stuck in Steely Dan Internal Jukebox hell.

I'm not aware of anyone else who walked out on us.
-
One thing is for certain. I would rather have MON than Houllier as manager of the Villa any day. I'd say 99%of football fans would too. The problem is the way he left and his reasons for it. Can't see that Randy would have him back or that MON would want to come back. If I were chairman I'd let him come back in a heart beat if the alternative is Houllier.
-
So that's just Villadawg, Jonzy 85 and TopDeck in favour then. Considering GHou's poor start you'd imagine there'd be a few more pining for MON.
-
Id tell MON to stick it where the sun don't shine. No more favouritism will mean better performances from certain players, boring football with the occasional exciting counter attack. I'd give Houllier the money in Jan. Some people on other sites dont like him because he's not energetic enough! He's hardly gunna be skipping up and down the touchline!!
I dont like the waving to the kop/ignoring our fans buissiness though...

I think there are two answers to that question.
1. If it's a straight 'who would be better for us right now' then from a pure football perspective I'd say MON as what we need right now is a bit of character and resilience on the pitch, which his sides certainly had.
2. If it's a case of would his return work in the real world, then no - too much water under the bridge now!

The above is pretty much the way i feel.
-
always expected us to go backwards this season. If you've got a squad of hoofball merchants then performances will suffer short term when you ask them to change and if we went back to mon's style no doubt results would improve but it won't get you top4. The big worry is if the money is there to rebuild if the existing players can't adapt - Dunne was being called the bargain of the season 6 months ago - he hasn't suddenly become a crap player but if you want to chase honours maybe you need a more cultured player - certainly citeh thought so.. that takes money and if the previous manager has stripped the cupboard bare then MON's appointment could be Lerners most costly mistake
-
Coyle is slowly changing the way Bolton is playing and look at the improvement. In entertainment, and now results. Big Sam is at Blackburn and is hitting the ceiling. MON, I loved so many parts of his time here, I liked his forthright attitude, and where he took us from and too, but have to admit, I think he may have hit his ceiling too. Houllier did progress Liverpool and left a legacy for Rafa to exploit, then plunder. Id feel more confident in my thoughts after the next window is closed, but I think Houllier could take us on further. We have had some poor performances, but not many, just poorer results. Liverpool was my low point, but I have enjoyed an hour against United when they didnt know whether they were farting or sneezing, bliss. Come on lads, lets see more of that.
-
if he want to come back he have to be GH's deputy and no bringing his groupie. So MON got no friends in coaching staff. That would be interesting. But no thanks for him.
