Just saw the sky champions league highlights and after the Panathaniakos v Barcelona game they asked the panel of Souness, Hoddle and Venables to choose between these two. They unanimously went for Messi. Interested to see what general opinion is, because i don't think it's as clear cut as that. So, who is the better player?
(Intended to put a poll in but can't for the life of me figure out how that is done!)
-
Added a poll for you.
-
Cheers

Messi every time. Not even close. Ronaldo is good but no team player and a flat track bully. Messi puts in the effort for the greater good.
-
Messi in every aspect for me.
His subtle changes of pace and turns are a joy to watch.
-
Apparently in Ronaldo's favour Messi doesn't score headers or free kicks, Xavi takes the set pieces, according to Hoddle.

I remember them saying that just before a game (was it a CL final?) when Messi then scored a header.
Messi everytime for me.
-
Messi, easily. I reckon Hilts_Coolerking will go for Ronaldo.
*Joke*
-
Messi, I think he'll become someone we are all talking about in 40/50 years time, Ronaldo is unlucky in that he would have been the best player in the world during a lot of other periods.
-
Messi, streets ahead and also in his favour is that he doesn't appear to be a c**t.
-
On a related note, did anyone see the fan run on to the pitch in the Barca game yesterday and flick the bird at Messi?
-
Messi any day. He's miles ahead both as a player and as a person.
Whenever players are hacking at his heels, he carries on whenever possible. Ronaldo just goes to ground, pulls that face of his (punchable, isn't it) and waves an imaginary card around. He's a great player but an absolute tosser of a man.
-
Ronaldo, only because of my Maradona influenced hatred of all things Argentina.
-
both great players,
but ones the biggest cheat i've ever seen on a football pitch, no prizes for guessing which one
-
Lionel Messi. that Maradona-esque goal he scored was simply sublime.

I've seen that goal a few times and the similarities are uncanny. I almost wonder whether it was going through his head at the time to try and replicate it.

Messi every time. Better attitude, better work rate, better goals, better entertainer.
-
It has too be Messi for me.
Although Ronaldo is more complete in the sense that he is good in the air and freekicks etc, I think Messi contributes more to the team overall and undoubtedly has the best skill.
I think Messi will eventually be the best player of all time. Especially as he doesn't seem to have all the flaws Maradona had.
-
Can't remember who it was that said it, but an opposing manager once said of Messi that he had such a low sense of gravity and such ability that he was able to change direction so quickly that defenders couldn't get to him. That's supposedly why he's able to dribble past players with so much control.
-
messi for me...
his dribbling style is a joy to watch, and his close control is second to none... he doesnt need 30 stepovers before going past a player... he does the simple things when he needs to, works hard, tries to play even when hacked down, and when he is, he jumps straight back up... he has a great attitude and is a magnificent player....
cristiano ronaldo, while a wonderful footballer, overdoes things for me.. he does too many step overs, he does flicks and tricks when it isnt necessary, he doesnt work as hard as messi, and his attitude is appalling... that silly little humming bird impression he does when other players have the audacity to try and tackle him, and he dives over thin air is hilarious and embarrassing at the same time... hes like a petulant little child having a tantrum because mommy wont buy him some sweets...
-
Ronaldo isn't even as good as the original (now alas, tubby and hairy) Ronaldo.
Over here they don't even call him 'Ronaldo', it's ''Cristiano'' this and ''CR9'' that. Feckin' sick of the twunt.
-
Messi everytime.
Bloody hell, 101 goals in 154 senior appearances for a club Barca is no mean feat.
-
It's Messi for me i just think he is way out there in terms of skill and team work he can dribble, pass, and he know's were the goal is so Messi beat's Ronaldo for me.
-
Messi without a shadow of a doubt. Though ladyboy is up there its 50% subtofuge (sp?) step overs etc. what really impresses me with messi is the fact that he takes the ball with him and relies more on ball skills than dummies.
I was sold the moment I first saw that goal v Getafe.
-
ronaldo is a cheating diving ******, check this out, never seen anything like this in my life
-
The missus is a RM fan and she thinks Messi is better, also Messi doesn't moan or wuss around after being touched. Looking forward to the match on Monday!!!......after we rout Arsenal of course.
-
Ashley Young.
He is world class remember.
-
Messi by a mile. Complete and consistent all round footballer Ronaldo isn't in the same league the cheating, diving, moisturising tosspot.
-
Think Ronaldo will improve Aston Villa more than Messi, but I would pick Messi. I prefer Messi as he is a nice man and wonderful footballer and a team player.
-
I think Ronaldo would improve us more than Messi, his goal record is ridiculous and he has proved that he can score 40 goals in a season over here. I read somewhere that he has scored 52 in 54 at Madrid and has 15 in 12 league games this season. I also, think he has a more all round game. His jump to head the ball is the biggest i have seen live and his heading ability is often overlooked. I also think he would have more impact away at Stoke and Blackburn than Messi would.
BUT....if you asked me who I would want us to sign, it would be Messi. He is one of the greats already.
-
Think they said that Ronaldo had 52 in 54 games since joining Real, but Messi had 70 in 71 games in the same time period. That outrageous for both of them.
-
Ronaldo, Messi wouldn't get close to scoring as many goals in the Prem as Ronaldo did imo.
-

Even if that were true (which is highly debatable), that doesn't make Ronaldo a better player.
-
...moisturising tosspot.
What a fantastic phrase.
-
Messi the more pure footballer... Ronaldo is more the athlete.
-
Messi.
-
Messi is ace.
Ronaldo is a nob.
-
Ronaldo's a detestable twat but he's a better all round player for me.
Pace, skill, power, very good header of the ball, can take a kick (even if he does moan like a girl about it), set pieces, goal scorer...he's pretty much got the lot, much as it pains me to say it.
Quite surprised by the voting tbh. For popularity, Messi though.
-
Messi by a mile. As good as Ronaldo is I don't think he is at Messi's level.
-
Messi, the new Maradonna and I think he is even better.
At least Ronaldo can retire to Thailand where Ladyboys are in vogue. Or he could become Lady Gaga.
-

I'm sorry but if 'cristiano' carries on the way he is scoring, you won't be able to compare the original Ronaldo to him.
Ronaldo and messi are scoring a goal a game.
Nd i thought he had gone back to CR7 now Raul has gone.
