Too right, Paul. Home game against Blackpool when our away form is what it is and the month we're in for. We HAVE to win, no doubt about it.

Would probably agree with that line-up legion. Interesting to see if Bannan can do it twice in 5 days.

I read that the way Blackpool play means they are quite narrow when they lose the ball. That would play to our advantage if we can get our wingers one on one against their full backs. Am a bit concerned that our midfield may be a little naive and open to being broken against though. A good composed performance from Clark and robust defending from set pieces will be crucial.

Such a fine line between where we are and where we could be. I think we'll get a much needed win against Blackpool with Fonz having a great game

3-0 Villa - Fonz, Ash and Downing.

Agree with that line up Legion. Only change could be Ireland for Bannan because I think he provides a bigger goal threat if he turns up.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Blackpool Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Shrek on November 07, 2010, 09:00:49 PM
Delfouneso must start, he needs encouragement and dropping him could really effect his confidence, especially after being denied a chance to go out on loan.

Plus Ash n Ireland upfront against Burnley didn't work.

I know the football world always talk about 'must win' games for like every match, but this is a must win match for us. We've got to get a win here stopping the rot and carry some momentum because even though we've been playing well the W's count for points, performances don't. A nice comfortable victory here will reassure Villa fans I think because the longer we go without our W, the worse it'll get...

Blackpool think they are going to 'rock' up at our place and have it easy like they are lying on the 'beach' then they've got another thing coming. And hopefully we will have no donkeys playing.

How was that? 2-1 Villa, really open game with loads of chances.

They were unlucky that the Hare's goal wasnt counted at the weekend. Looked alright to me.

We will have to play well to win but I think we will and if the Fonz gets chances this week I expect him to score. We simply cannot continue missing chance after chance. I'm hoping that it will be the day that the goals actually start going in. Dont think Blackpool are capable of playing the Bham type football that will frustrate us. They are woefully short of pace at the back so hopefully the Fonz can get in behind and cause damage.

Two changes for me - Ireland for Ashley Young. Yes that 5 minute cameo has convinced me its time to give him a chance. A kick up the arse might not do Ashley Young any harm either especially with his contract shenanigans. His attitude problems continue aswell, yes he is our most talented player but he has been acting like a dickhead on the pitch for a while now. Id also bring Cuellar in for either Dunne or Collins just to give him some deserved game time.

----------------Friedel--------------------
L Young, Cuellar, Collins/Dunne, Warnock
Albrighton, Bannan, Clark, Downing
---------------Ireland-------------------
-------------Delfouneso---------------

Will Gabby be back on the bench?

A comfortable 3-0 win for the Villa (Bannan, Delfouneso and Downing).

People who are saying we should drop Downing and A.Young are incorrect in my opinion.

We just cannot accomodate Ireland at the moment.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Blackpool Pre-Match Thread
Post by: UK Redsox on November 08, 2010, 11:29:14 AM
I can't see why Downing should be dropped at the moment.

A pretty good 5 minutes isn't enough for me to give Ireland a starting role over Stewie or Bannan / Clark in central midfield.

I'm looking forward to seeing Olly and will offer translation services of his ramblings to those lucky enough to be sat with me behind the opposition bench

We played well on Saturday, I think we will win and also that it will be a good game. Blackpool play some good attacking football, so I think there will be goals, 3-1 Villa maybe. I think we will see the youngsters continuing their impressive progress. Maybe Bannan will do a Coleman and score against the team he was part of last season. I wonder if Holloway will start with Harewood or use him as an impact sub like he has been lately?

As ex-Villa players always seem to pop up and score against us, its about time the opposite worked in our favour so I'll go for a Bannan winner. I'm sure the Hare is nailed on to score though.

I think we're due to give someone a twatting. It should have been Fulham, but for bad finishing and a front two lacking in confidence.

The youngsters are looking good. Downing is playing pretty well too. If we can get Ash to relax a bit and just not try too hard, it'll be good. There's far too much pressure on him to be our main man, so I'd take him out the firing line and give Ireland a game. Ash may just need a rest too.

3-0

This game could be another one to suit Bannan in the centre of midfield, as Blackpool are as lightweight as Fulham in midfield. He'll learn to cope with more physical teams in time, but right now this could suit him.

We really need a win in this one with the four fixtures we have after that.

Blackpool are a very open team playing three strikers so we'll get plenty of chances, they won't come and stick 11 men behind the ball that's for sure as they didn't when they went to Arsenal or Chelsea.

Worry is I don't think we'll keep a clean sheet either.

feck it im overly optimistic perhaps but our defence has been very solid, with two genuine wide men I think we can really stretch them. The Fonz will get chances of that I'm sure.

The simple thing to do is to swap them around when were defending a cross coming from left to right towards the left back area.
On the game, though im far from panicking,we really need to win,Blackpool should allow us to play and create chances,a tight 2-1 win.

If you give the opposition's best header of the ball a free header you'll struggle not matter who is picked.

Uh Oh

Lawro has only gone and predicted a 2-1 win for us, is that the kiss of death?

Aston Villa v Blackpool

I saw Blackpool the other week, and the thing you can always say about them is that they start really well and go for it, but their problem is that they can't soak up pressure, and Villa will be able to pick them off.

Despite the absence of big-name players like Gabby Agbonlahor and John Carew in the 1-1 draw at Fulham, Villa should have won. Gerard Houllier's counter-attacking approach is perfect for playing against a team like Blackpool, who just go for it. Other teams may know how to deal with it, but against Blackpool, I think it'll be enough.

Prediction: 2-1
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Blackpool Pre-Match Thread
Post by: eamonn on November 09, 2010, 03:40:23 PM
What is is with Lawro and ''Houllier's counter-attacking approach''? We took the game to Fulham on Saturday after a sluggish start. It was your old mucker O'Neill who loved the counter-attacking approach yet.

That over-used cliche "must win game" is trotted out far too often but this is a must win game with the fixtures we have coming up.

Agree that it will be an open game which will be better for our creative players. I just worry about our finishing.

5-2 Villa, with a shocking start leaving us 2-0.  Back level by half time and steam roller them second half.

my personal choice:

       L.Young----------Cuellar----------------Collins--------------Beye
       Albrighton----------Ireland-------------Bannan---------------Downing
            -----------------------------Ash------------------------------

For the record, I predict a 0-0 bore draw. Though I really think every one of us in the stands needs to get behind the team 100% and give them our full support, no moaning, no grunting...untill after.

I think a midfield three of Ireland, Bannan and Young further forward has pretty much no defensive instinct. I'd still put Clark in there, just so we can have that platform for the creative players to build on. For that system there to work you'd need all three contributing fully defensively and offensively, and I don't think that Bannan is ready to play that demanding a role yet - and Ash probably never will be. Ireland could, if he's taken GH's words to heart recently, but I'm not so sure yet.

5-2 Villa, with a shocking start leaving us 2-0.  Back level by half time and steam roller them second half.

Friedel
L.Young
Collins (1)
Dunne (would prefer carlos but it won't be him)
Warnock
Albrighton
Bannan
Clark
Downing (2)
Ash    (1)
The Fonz (1)

Subs:  Guzan, Beye, Cuellar, Ireland, Gabby, Lichaj, Hogg

Can't stand vague posts like this. You couldn't be a bit more specific could you?

And every goal will be scored with an outside of the boot 40 yard curler.

Just read an article 'interview with a Blackpool fan'

It was about tomorrows game, when asked about a predication he said villa 2.0 win, because Blackpool are resting a few for West ham.

Abit weird to hear that.

By my reckoning, a 4-1 win takes us above Spurs, who are currently 6th. A defeat leaves us at best 15th. I know it's still pretty early in the season, but it's a weird league table this year.

Gate prediction : 36,750

Blackpool are bringing 1,700, and we should be able to manage at least 35,000.

From the OS, hard to tell, but I would have thought at least 35k plus, we must have 26/27k season tickets plus the away fans, so I doubt we'll ever get sub 30k for a league match

Availability

Trinity Road Stand - Upper: Low [Blocks A1, A2 and A3 only]
Trinity Road Stand - Middle: Single seats only
Trinity Road Stand - Lower: Low [Blocks C1, C2 only]
North Stand - Upper: OK
North Stand - Lower: OK
Doug Ellis Stand - Upper: OK
Doug Ellis Stand - Lower: Low
Holte End - Upper: OK
Holte End - Lower: OK

The gates always include ST holders, present or not, so I think you're right.

I think I will take my prediction downwards mind you - to about 33,750.

We really do require some inspirational activity from GH in the transfer window in January to get the club going again.

I bloody hate games like this. The ones we should win but never seem to be able to.

Also, if by the end of tonight, I've heard Mowbray or any other of the over-excited, incessant, loud and shouty BBC commentators, once again, using the expression "Tangerine Dream", then I will get into my car, drive down to their studios and play out my own "Baseball Bat Dream".

I'll predict a difficult win, but I won't be at all surprised if we lose.

Are you sure?

They only have the top bit of the doug ellis as the club are offering 4 for £40 in the lower part

I think the whole away allocation is about 3,200, so 1,700 doesn't sound far off, for the top tier only, as it is deeper, but i may be completely wrong.

I think the general conception is that it is a "must win" game which we need to avert a "French farce".

I haven't got time to audition for any French farces. I'm trying to put the wheels back on this bandwagon

This season is threatening to turn into a fondant fancy, if Houllier is unable to maintain levels of screenwash in his claret and blue juggernaut.

I know what your sayin I just think we need to win tonight as Saturdays game will be very difficult and we should beat teams like Blackpool at home thats no disrespect to them though as they have had good away results this year

Love it, Maz. Reminds me of when someone asked Roy Keane if a game was a six-pointer and he replied "last time I checked it was still three points for a win."

last time I went to see us play them in the FA cup I hitched there as usual but only got as far as Wellington. Went instead and watched Telford get stuffed at home to Weymouth. Deep joy.

Business as usual after this one though, struggling to score more than 1, throwing leads away in the last few minutes et.c
