I'm surprised Bannan is in instead on Ireland, but he did well last week when he came on. As I say we desperately need to win.

Midfield looks a bit lightweight to me with four attackers and only one defensive. I'd have gone with Ireland or Hogg instead of Bannan.

Looks horribly inexperienced to me, hope this isn't going to go pear shaped. I can see Murphy and Gera running rings round us if we're not careful...

Suprised no Ireland, but excited by the line up. Not in the best circumstances but I'm happy we've got three exciting and unpredictable young players from the off.

Just shows how much Gerard didn't want to lose last week though - willing to go for the three today.

I'd have picked Clark instead of Albrighton.

Ireland would provide even less steel than Bannan.

I don't think anyone can accuse GHou of being negative today though...

Very positive attacking line up, I wouldn't be surprised if ash played more deep central role with Bannon behind Delfouneso.

But definitely not negative, let's just he hasn't gone from one extreme to another.

But spurs played this formation against inter allbe a more experienced side.

Post by: eastie on November 06, 2010, 02:38:33 PM
rather bannan than sidwell , but i think ireland will only get his form by having a decent run in the team.

i really dont see where the goals will come from , not gerards fault though, we have been crying out for a natural goalscorer for many years.

I meant Clark, not sure why I typed Hogg instead, old age at a guess.

I'd have even considered Sidwell ahead of Bannan, not so based on ability but more to have a bit more bite in there.

And you're right, certainly looks like we'll be going for it, which could be a joy to watch. Or a nightmare if we get over run in midfield.

I'd call it brave, refreshing even, rather than mental. Fonz, Bannan and Albrighton know each others game very well. Barry is in better form than Ireland and all three are good at passing into feet. We're not gonna win by pumping it long today.

Oh and Hou said in his press conference yesterday that Sidwell had been ill the last couple of days.

I wonder if Downing might be playing a little deeper in midfield today. Out of those players in midfield, he strikes me as the one with the best passing range.

Don't much like the line up.  Would probably have chosen Sidwell or Clark alongside Nige for more defensive solidity.  Wonder if he's playing Downing in the middle alongside Nige?

I like the line up to be honest. I find Bannan a very intelligent player and he puts himself about. Ireland is an upgrade if his head is in it. If not he's a liability. The line up is quite young and quick. I like our chances today.

Well, their central midfield is Greening, Murphy and Dempsey further forward. If anything, with NRC in there, we're the heavyweight ones.

Don't know why people are so worried about the lack of physicality in the team. We're against Fulham, for goodness' sake, this is not going to be a game decided in crunching challenges in the midfield. This is a team set up to try and keep possession and create chances, and I welcome it. Not only that, just look how many youth players we have in the side! And some would put Clark in as well, ahead of Dunne on form. I for one am feeling very proud of our youth set up today.

I hope 'the fonz' shows some more class in the second half.

Early days for him and Bannan (who looks like the player we've been missing in our midfield - almost Scholes-esque).

Albrighton's goal was the best I've seen us score since Young's against Everton.  On Young, it's a good job all that contract talk hasn't distracted him....

The Future's Bright, the Future's Albrighton. I am so clever...

Good first half from us, could of possibly scored another but we're winning and playing well which is the main thing. We're passing the ball around nicely Barca style and we're retaining most of the possesion... and we're doing all this playing a 5'6 kid and another kid bossing the midfield.

I forgot to say......fair play to Houllier for giving the kids the chance, I know in some respects he has no choice, but I'm sure under O'Neill, Sidwell would be on the pitch, either from the start or when Coker came off.   Also, not to flog a dead horse, Luke  Young showing why a right back should play at right back.

The frustrating thing for me is that the kids are doing brilliantly, but the 'stars', i.e. Downing and Young look like they're hiding. The game against Blues was so frustrating; Downing didn't even want the ball and Young just ran around like a headless chicken ignoring the acres of space on the right wing. When he finally got there and isolated the fullback near the end he hit the post. Houllier needs to sort him out.

Bannan and Albrighton have been superb. A joy to watch that first half really. Fonz missed two good chances but his touch has been excellent, his pace gives us an outlet and he has held it up really well. Think our full backs have improved after shaky starts. Cant understand how people are criticising Dunne!!! Clark too has come in and improve things. Two negatives - Downing - did he want an invitation to have a shot at the start and Ashley Young has been awful. We will need those two to improve after the break. Think we were 2 goals a better side in the first half.

We're doing pretty well so far. The youngens are doing well. Fonzie looks pretty sharp. If he can get a goal, it'll do his confidence the world of good.

I realise that this a team selection more or less forced on Houllier due to injuries, but it is has an exciting look to it.

With the timing of MON leaving and GH coming in we have to accept that this is probably a season where we build rather than challenge (we may have a decent cup run).

So it is a great opportunity for Albrighton, Bannan, Clarke, Fonz and others to make a claim for a regular place. Based on glimpses so far this could be a good thing.

And Ireland has a season to get himself sorted out. He was Man City's POtY not so long ago, he needs to get back to this form and I hope he does.

Such optimism!

He's one of those players I always fancy to score against us when I see them coming on.

I thought the Fonz did well.  The role up front on your own is a tough one and he held up play and linked things okay - a la Heskey.

On the plus side he gets in more goal scoring positions than Heskey.  He missed a few today but I'd prefer my strikers to get in the positions than not.
