I really hope we put a strong team out for this, the matches with Portsmouth, Blackburn, and Reading in the cups last year made the season a lot more memorable than it would have otherwise been.Im convinced a prediction from me will jinx it for everyone and Im getting nervous already.

I'd rest Ashley Young and Downing and play Bannan, Ireland and Albrighton as the attacking three.  Carew to lumber around up front.

I'd go with Guzan, Beye, Collins, Clark, Warnock, Sidwell, NRC, Albrighton, Ireland, Bannan, Carew.  Young, Heskey and Downing on the bench if required.  Personally I'd keep Emile locked up all week, fed on a diet of raw meat ready to rip Roger fucking Johnsons head off.

Oh 2-0.

A nice win here with lots of confidence going into Sunday with hopefully another win over blose.

Warnock's just suspended for this game I take it after he got his 5th booking on Saturday?

Close game 1-0 or 2-1.

Providing we get through and don't pick up any injuries that's all that matters.

A bit of shooting practice might not go amiss for Ivanhoe though, who knows he might be saving his best for this comp. I think he's won it about 4 times already (twice with Leicester, twice with Liverpool) and looked like Dalian Atkinson (the good version) when he came on v Blackburn.

A routine win.

I'm starting to think we're going to Wembley again this season. Looking at the teams already out of the CC, and some of the draws in this round, we've got a good chance, I reckon.

Looking forward to this match. I love night matches.

From the minute O'Neill left, this season was always going to be a difficult one.

The new manager has had us for, what, four or five league matches. It seems a little bit early to get suicidal about the way the season is going.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Burnley Pre-Match Thread
Post by: brontebilly on October 25, 2010, 03:46:47 AM
this draw has opened up nicely for us. Burnley were spanked 4-0 at home by Reading at the weekend with Leon Cort sent off. Presume he will be suspended for this one. They have tidy ball players in midfield like Elliot and Eagles but we should have enough for them. Id like to see Clark get a shot left back, Elliot will be a good test for him. We need to try alternatives there. Id give Carew a start, last season he tended to have field days against the lower league teams, himself and Delfouneso combined well at Palace I recall so maybe this game can get him going again.

----------------Friedel-----------------
Beye, Dunne/Collins, Cuellar, Clark
---------Sidwell, Reo Coker----------
Albrighton---------------------Bannan
---------Carew-----Delfouneso

Pretty strong bench to come on if needed but I think the above will do the job.

A 4-3 win.

Four goals (Ash, Ivanhoe, Stew, OG) ahead in the 49th min.

Guzan caught napping thrice in the 60th, 70th & 80th min.

We managed to survive their onslaught by parking their coach in our penalty area.

I think some of you people put faaaar too much effort and thought into the scoreline.

IIRC, we won 5-2 at home against them last season ... I'm going to for something very similar on the scoreline.

I'd like to see a fairly strong team though ... as it's my first visit to Villa Park this season I'd like to see some of our best. That and plenty of goals. It would sure make the cold, dark October night a lot better if I was jumping up and down at regular intervals.

I'd go for -

---------------------Guzan---------------------
---Lichaj---Cuellar-----Clark---Warnock---
---Albrighton--NRC---Sidwell---Bannan---
---------------Ireland--------------------------
-------------------------Carew-----------------

3-0 home win

Carew 32
Ireland 56
Bannan 78

I think Ireland needs to start,so he can get some games under his belt, hopefully a goal will boost his confidence.

Like to see Fonz,Lichaj,Clark and Bannan all start, and get some more experience, but with the few injuries we've got,the team is starting to look like it will pick itself.

I'm taking both my daughter and mum on Wednesday and on previous form neither of them are "lucky mascots".

On this basis I will go for an awkward 1-0.

Oh well chips at half time will keep the 7 year old happy and a night with her "baby boy" will keep the old(er) one happy.

Just me set for disappointment then.

Interesting one this-does GH have a look at the likes of Bannan Clark and the other young tyros from the start

Or-does he value a good cup run(one of the the only bits of silverware realistically available)?

Either way Burnley are on a poor run of form so should be there for the taking.

or...they will try to use a victory over the Mighty Villa to kickstart their season("we used to be in the same league as them"etc)

funny old game football

Despite the hockeying against Reading, Burnley are in decent enough form. 7th in championship and knocked out Bolton. Yet they are very lightweight in midfield and neither of their full backs can defend.
Looks like they will line out something similar to
Jensen
Mears, Carlisle, Bikey, Fox
-----Alexander------
Elliot, Cork, Marney, Eagles
-------Iwuelemo

Game at weekend or not - i do not see too many changes as we just do not have the bodies and Gez will get some flak if he takes this lightly

Guzan

Beye - more games the better for him to get sharp
Cuellar
Clark
Warnock

Ireland - needs games
Sidwell - chance to shine after decent display on Sat
NRC - he is cpatain and Gez said he plays
Albrighton - could rip them a new one

Ash - never wants to be resetd and loves playing
Would Give Carew 45 then Fonz - whoever performs best plays Sunday

Lichaj-------Cuellar---------Clark--------Lowry

------Ireland------Reo Coker-----Bannan

Albrighton--------------------------------Young

Friedel, Collins, Beye, Downing, Sidwell, Heskey, Carew

It might be a bit lightweight in midfield but we'd tear them a new one.
Lots of quality on the ball, movement, mobility, versatility and pace.
With a fairly strong bench as a safety valve.

Torn between whether to save our energy for the filth at the weekend or to go hell for leather tonight. Torn between whether to save our energy for the filth at the weekend or to go hell for leather tonight. I see thins competition as very winable now with some high profile team exiting and I would love to celebrate some silverware at the end of the year. Also I think the match at the weekend has draw written all over it.

Ultimately, what would we remember best and longest, winning the League Cup or beating that lot again? 1976-77 is remembered as one of our greatest seasons of all time. They did the double over us.

Absolutely no need to be torn.  It's well within our capability to win both and that's what I expect us to do.
