F**k it, 4-1 Villa, Bannan hat-trick and Carlos Cuellar with a bicycle kick to make Doug proud. Sidwell o.g. for them in injury time when he forgets who he's playing for and unleashes an unstoppable 30-yarder which gives Brad no chance.

8-0, revenge for last season. Heskey 4, Albrighton, Downing, Ashley (Young), Ashley (Cole) OG, Carew to miss 2 pens.

In reality, 2-1 if Heskey plays, 1-1 if he doesn't.

I think we owe them one after last couple of defeats. I think we can do it 2-1 like last season. What we need is Howard Webb or Phil Dowd to referee to guarantee us a penalty.......

Cant see Dunne being fit for this. By all account his knee is a bit of a mess. His general conditioning is also an issue, that injury before the end of last season seems to have screwed him though. Strikers are taking him on one on one and beating him pretty easy at the moment.

He had Achilles problems at the end of last season - so how is that related to his knee? You say by all accounts - is that your own assumption? RD completed 90 minutes last week.

RD completed 90 minutes last week.

Two nights ago actually. How he got man of the match for giving away the free-kick that led to the Prussian's first, deflected past a wrong-footed Given for the third and was beaten for pace on the turn on a few occassions I'm not sure.

I'd be happy with Collins and Cuellar for this but Dunne's seniority and the respect he gets will mean he's number one in central defence for a while yet.

After the semi-final and the drubbing they gave us,, you sort of feel the lads should be up for this one.  But then there a gulf in class and if Drogba or Essien are on their game we have nothing to cope with them.

I'm going for a Chelsea win, but with us playing well and walking out saying "That's edge a top player can give you."

Plus, Defensively, we're not quite at the races at the moment.

They are far and away the best team in the country.

Terry' s a doubt I presume as he is missing the England game tonight, I think Alex is injured as well and Frank 'looks to the heavens' Lampard is just coming back from injury. So we have a chance if we can just contain Drogba, Anelka, Malouda, Cole and Essien.

We'll give them a game but I fear they will have too much for us.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Chelsea Pre-Match Thread

I think NRC has to start this game and add defensive cover to any threat coming down the left from Cole and Malouda.

1-2 Chelsea but we'll give them a good game.

Would start Cuellar and Dunney at centre half, rest Albrighton, move Young back to the wing and bring in Ireland otherwise Heskey will get isolated.

We may see some changes for this game, with doubts over AY, Albrighton, Gabby and possibly Ivanhoe.

I reckon Ireland, Bannan, Gabby as a wide option would be the options in that order. Could we play Bannan and Downing wide, and alternating? If Ged was thinking of playing Bannan at spurs, I presume it would have been Albrighton he would have come in for, so I guess that was his thinking?

I'd be tempted to bring in Ireland for Albrighton in any case. Could see Albrighton struggling a bit against Cole, and Ireland may achieve more and help us keep the ball.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Chelsea Pre-Match Thread

I'm hopeful of getting a result here - Chelsea will be missing quite a few - Lampard, Terry, Benayoun, Kalou, Alex are all expected to be out, whether than transpires is another thing. I think the Chelsea squad is quite thin this season and a centre half partnership of Bruma and Ivanovic with Paulo Ferreira right back isnt great. Hopefully Gabby and Heskey will be back from their niggles.

We have a big decision at centre half, both Dunne and Collins played two games each midweek. I saw both of Dunne's games, not yet back to his best, still struggling for pace when isolated one on one but was pretty solid in Slovakia. I would bring Cuellar in regardless. Maybe with Dunne next to him. Our full backs were destroyed against Chelsea last season but they need more protection this time out. I really would give Albrighton a break for this game. Chelsea tend to run rings around us in the centre, Petrov has had a tough enough week too, if he is totally shattered then he shouldnt play even if its only Sidwell as back up. I think we will have to go with three in there. I'm not normally a fan of Gabby right wing as he doesnt have the guile to play there but just for this game he may keep Cole occupied and that is sufficient reason for me, Downing unlucky to miss out but I think Ashley Young could have too much for Ferreira if he drifts out there.

---------------Friedel
Young, Dunne/Collins, Cuellar, Warnock
------------------Petrov/Sidwell---------------------
------Reo Coker------------------Ireland-----------
Gabby------------------------------------A Young
---------------------Heskey-----------------------

Chelski's defence will be playing "getting to know you-getting to know all about you"
so hopefully we can cause them problems

If we can get it wide and cross it-make them turn and face their own goal a bit, their lack of togetherness should be exposed.

I hope

Luke Young has to get better protection than he did last March at Stamford Bridge. I'd be hesitant to put Albrighton there for that reason as Chelsea will target our right side as being our weakest link - Marc's inexperience and Young's possible jitters about playing Chelsea again.

My most dreaded game of the season because of the number of gloryhunting chavs I know down here

I reckon 1-1 though I would love us to win, even if just in memory to a couple of their obnoxious fans I had a run in with on the tube on the way back from Wembley into London last season. Father and son who summed the lack of class that is Chelsea absolutely to a tee...

Malouda absolutely destroyed Luke Young at Stamford Bridge last year.

I reckon he'll put him into Row Z after 6 minutes.

To be fair to Luke he had no cover, as MON flapped at half time and went 4-4-2 for the second half and moved Gabby into the middle. That match still winds me up as a display of mis-management on an enormous scale.

I'm not sure if Drogba being out will benefit us too much as they may change the way they play to suit the like of Anelka. It will still be a really tough game, as Chelsea have been the best team I've seen at VP over the past two seasons and they have good strength in depth. We normally have to defend really well against them but tomorrow I'm hoping that some of the new training will pay off and we'll keep the ball more.

I'd be happy to get anything out of the game.

For some obscure reason I am really excited about this game in a way I haven't been in a while! I think we will have them!

I'm going to go for 2-1 to villa. Heskey and Young for us.

I just loved GH's comment about Heskey being as good as Drogba but just needs reminding about how good he can be! Up and at 'em villa!!!!!!

2-0 Chelsea. Even without Drogba, they really are the most complete side in the league. They can mix it with the best and have so many match winning players, we can only hope we catch them on an off day.

Over 60% predicting Villa not to lose.  You wouldn't have seen that a month or so ago.

Now that Drogba's out I'll be positive and go for a 1-1, but whilst it pains me to say it, I wouldn't be surprised if Chelsea sneaked it by the odd goal.

Aston Villa have lost just 2/8 home matches against Sky Four sides since 2008/09 while Chelsea have lost 5/6 away fixtures against top-half non-\sky Four teams.

Their right back is the weak link, so I'd move Ash on the left to attack him and put Ireland in the middle.

I'd play Marc on the right with Reo and Stan in the middle.

Ow and I'd drop Dunne for Cueller.

I dont like Chelsea.
In fact I`ve never liked Chelsea.
I didnt like them in the 60s and 70s when they were a cinderella club winning nothing.
I dont like them now when they are a cinderella club winning things.
Tambling, Hudson, Harris, Lampard, Terry....all the same to me, all their players have always been too full of their own self importance thinking they are playing for a big club. When in fact the only reason Chelsea ever got any attention was because they are a London club, in fact probably the club who have always epitomised more than any of the others down there what the rest of the country hates about London clubs.

As I say I dont like them, never ever have.

Villa 1 Cockneys 0.

Just about to set out with, I'll admit, a feeling of trepidation.  I can see us winning uncomfortably or getting well and truly whooped, a draw is about the least likely result for me.  Please...

Heskey, Albrighton and Luke Young are ill and won't play? Shit. All 3 players are in great form, such a shame, I was looking foward to seeing Albrighton rip cashley cole to pieces on the wing. Time for Ireland, Carew and Beye to step up in a big game - we need them all to play really well.
