Pete colley at bodymoor just confirmed phil Thompson will be assistant manager if houllier accepts the job. He's been offered it and is talking to family in France, expected to accept.
-
AAARRGHH!!!
(THompson, not Houllier)
-
Sit down Pinocchio...
-
SHIT !!!!!! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

STUPID FUCKING SCOUSE PRICK, ILL BOO THE C%NT

STUPID FUCKING SCOUSE PRICK, ILL BOO THE C%NT
Are you twelve years old? Or just a bit dim?

i am ok with houllier, but thompson, that dick hasnt said anything good about villa when on soccer saturday !!
im FUMING
-
STUPID FUCKING SCOUSE PRICK, ILL BOO THE C%NT
you really are immature. Why in the hell would you boo an assitant manager of YOUR TEAM?
-
Don't worry he will learn to love the club and will be raving about them after his Villa career ended. As long he doesn't behave like a certain David O'Leary.
-
STUPID FUCKING SCOUSE PRICK, ILL BOO THE C%NT
That's the spirit. Great way to support the team

i will boo who the hell i fucking want!! i have had a season ticket for a very long time now and i am entitled to my opinion and this is a totally rediculous appointment !!!!!
i was happy with having houllier in charge and passing some of his experience onto Kev mac, but to have bloody thompson as assistant manager is a joke
-

i will support the team and i will support the new manager but that dick can do one!
-
What's the opposite of "Dream Team"?
-
I've heard thommo say many good things about us, they even took the piss out of him last season as he was the only panelist to tip us to finish top 4!
-
ah well, having a season ticket a long time is no guarantee of intelligent life.

why do you "hate" a person that you don't know from a hole in the ground? Do you think he'll come to Villa and secretly plot to undermine the entire operation? Or do you think he'll do his very best to make us successful? That despite whatever you may think of him as a TV pundit, he was a very good footballer and he's trusted by the manager working alongside KM.
-

Yes, the idea of a manager wanting to work with his former assistant is 'rediculous' (sic).

You do realise that together they finished 2nd in the league with Liverpool, don't you?
-
That means I have to like Thompson...Christ/Mohammed THAT IS GOING TO BE DIFFICULT!
-
What's the opposite of "Dream Team"?
Birmingham City FC.
-
It'd be interesting to see Phil Thompson's reaction when 'Stevie G' hits a 25 yard screamer in injury time to beat us 1-0 at Villa Park this season (I could have said Torres but he scored against us last year). I mean, it's not as though he's circumspect about his Liverpool FC obsession on Soccer Saturday.....
-
This appointment is fast becoming a pantomine..................
-
I aM hAving TRouble with mY internet connection thi's morning. EvErytOIME I try to get on H&V, I get onto Villa Talk. pHil ThOmps'on. Whos'e he?

-
Cant see a problem. Good fun to take the piss out of but at the end of the day he was a top player for club & country and will bring a wealth of experience to the job. Bring it on
-
How would you expect someone who spent many fabulous years playing and supporting Liverpool to react whilst being paid to be TV pundit? People on here comment about how McInally, Merson, Gregory or Dublin favour Villa on TV/radio (Merson less so recently), and they likely don't have a tenth of the allegiance as Thompson would to Liverpool. He's a professional, and being a professional, if he is appointment to Houllier's staff he'll do his best to make us successful. Just like Nigel Spink does at Blues.
-
Most players and coaches support other teams but when employed by Aston villa I'm sure they give their best to Aston villa whoever they support- I'm sure Thompson would want villa to beat Liverpool!

and every manager Villa have had has been a Villa fan?
For some people no manager / assistant is going to be good enough, perhaps we should just not bother to appoint one at all and just let a x factor style voting system pick the team
-
Was Thompson at Liverpool when Kev Mac was? Just a thought...
-
most players managers and coaches arent supporters of the teams clubs there working for,but there profesionala and have pride and self beleief.houllier thompson and mcdonald give them a chance.remember there all winners.randy lerners no fool.please lets get behind the club up the villa.i am not one eyed just villa till i die
-
Ofcourse Thompson would want the best for the Villa if he came - silly to think otherwise.
This will be a hell of a ciulture shock from the statues on the bench that were Robertson and Walford to the 90 minutes of screaming, swearing and pointing that they'd get from Thompson.
Atleast Villa have always been a happy home for Scousers down the years, Saunders, Withe, Mortimer, Waring etc.
-
They can confirm this, although Houllier hasn't taken the job yet?
-
This appointment is fast becoming a pantomine..................
This pantomime will soon become an appointment!
-
No, I'm sure you are right, Toronto Villa & East 19, but I bet he'll have a sneaky little shaking fist hidden up his jumper whilst he rams his other fist into his mouth to stifle the cries of joy.
-
i agree yes we have had some great scousers in out history
-
Again, it's a bit suprising but there are benefits. Atleast we'll be talked about more affectionately on Soccer Saturday now. It'll be good PR nationwide.
-

At least Villa have always been a happy home for Scousers down the years, Saunders, Withe, Mortimer, Waring etc.
Good post. I find Thompson a very interesting pundit to listen to. If he says some things about Villa that are a criticism then perhaps we should take notice. Not as if we are perfect.
-
Appoint a coach who's a born winner having accumulated every possible honour at club level? Perish the thought.
-
Not sure that kmac is going to be 1st team coach- from what colley was saying he's likely to return to his old reserve job, maybe houllier and thommo will bring their own coach with them, Sammy lee?
-
Gotta admit I find him the most irritating pundit on TV, and I think he talks a lot of shit! Oh well.
-
I'm trying to keep calm but this is a potentially disastrous appointment (Houllier and Thompson).
I don't think I have ever been so pessimistic about a season before - this will end in tears by January, I'm sure of it.
-
They confirmed Thompson will be assistant manager if houllier accepts the job- as thommo works for sky it's obvious they'd get tipped off by him.
-
Was Thompson at Liverpool when Kev Mac was? Just a thought...
KM joined in 84 just as Thompson was leaving. Saying that, I'd be surprised if they didn't know each other to some extent.
We shouldn't forget here that we lost three members of the first team coaching staff when MON departed, leaving us virtually bereft. Its therefore not just unsurprising, but essential that Houllier brings one or more staff in with him and I would be happier with someone he knows and trusts than someone he doesn't (even if it does mean big nose).
-
thompsons passionate bout football ok hes a scouse ,but hes a winner been there etc, would sort out the defence, houlliers no mug.how about a coaching roll for brian liitle/ dennis mortimer too???
-

Is that because they were disasterous and unsuccessful when they worked together before? Just trying to understand why you would say that.
-
pinnochio pinochio give us a wave, could be fun ,bring a great atmospher too villa park, but we are villa so no doubt some fans will moan,
-

I'd rather have the best people for the job regardless.
-
Sky quoting general krulak saying on fans websites give houllier a chance , where is this on our website?
-
pinnochio pinochio give us a wave, could be fun ,bring a great atmospher too villa park, but we are villa so no doubt some fans will moan,
Surely it would have to be 'Stand up Pinocchio' ;-)
-
This thing about having to hate all things Scouse is similar to how they all boo You'll Never Walk Alone when we were all quite happy to sing it years ago with our Villa scarves held aloft. Liverpool is not only little urchins breaking into your car. It is home to some great pubs and I enjoy our twice yearly visits there every year, now the chance of getting slashed by a Stanley knife has passed. Sorry to refusing to comply with the code of conduct. It will be interesting if they start a 'stand up if you hate Thompson' chant. They will all be like kids in a school assembly looking around to see what everyone else thinks before standing up.
-
My problem with Phil Thompson is that I don't think he's very good. I'd be disappointed to think that KMac will get overlooked in favour of Phil Thompson. As far as I can tell, they haven't worked together for six years, so I don't particularly see the need for them to work together again at Villa. To clarify: I'm not against Ged, but certainly not keen on Thompson.
-
If you're Ok with Houllier, you're effectively happy with his judgement on players, tactics, youth development, etc. So how can you be OK with that yet not with his choice of assistant?
I'm not the bloke's biggest fan either, but if we're willing to give Houllier a chance then the same courtesy should be extended to Thompson.
Afterall, it's the actual manager who will be picking the team and signing the players.
-
If Thompson doesn't want the job if he is offered it, he will be pissed off by his own employers allegedly touting him for the appointment.
-
Phil Thompson went up in my estimation when he condemned Curtis Davies for his post-MON interview/self-obsessed whinge.
-
Thompson NO NO NO and FU*%ing NO
-
Good point - hardly good news for Curtis davies though!
-
The problem I have with Scousers are not the real life variety, it's more the 'professional' Scouser (Copyright Carla Lane) that loves to play up the the stereotypical bull shit of scally, GSOH, look after their own crap.
And the fact that the media largley joined in (hence the endless shite sitcoms) before it all went out of fashion post Hillsboro/Hysel and they were then replaced by the 'professional' Manc and then 'professional' Geordie.
I used to work for a company based in Liverpool the people I know have always been great up there and as embarressed by the stereotype as anyone.
-
Good point - hardly good news for Curtis davies though!
I think he's living on borrowed time anyway!
-

I always think it's ironic that as soon as Liverpool (city or club) is mentioned, we come out with Your 101 Best Scouse Cliches yet threaten fatwahs on anyone who talks about Thick Brummies.
-
This will go down like a lead balloon but....
I quite like Thommo. He is passionate and a born winner. Most of the comments I have watched on TV have been fairly positive about us.
Yes he said we over acheived with MON, but fair play to him for now wanting to improve on that. I would like someone to ruffle some feathers. I think he dovetails Houllier's "aloofness" very well.
Both will be a very welcome appointment in my eyes.
-
Ultimately, if appointed, Gerard Houillier and Phil Thompson, will be judged on their results so we have to give them a chance before rushing to judgement. However, I really hope that they produce a style of play that makes Villa an attractive team to watch. I know it might appear churlish to criticise three top 6 seasons in a row but I'd long given up on the idea that going to the Villa was going to be fun. The regimented tactics and style of play felt akin to eating stale bread and drinking water every day for lunch. I mean, it'd probably keep you alive (I guess) but you wouldn't look forward to it.
-
According to Wiki, Phil Thompson's middle name is Bernard.
-
Some people on here will moan about anybody. Okay, Thompson is a scouser / LFC fan but so what ? From what I know about him he's a top bloke. When I lived in Liverpool in the late 70s he was (allegedly) the only Liverpool player not to sell his Europeal Cup Final tickets through touts as he didn't want to see the fans ripped off.
-
This will go down like a lead balloon but....
I don't see why, the majority seem quite happy with it.
-
He has in the main been positive about Villa, but his comments about us over achieving under MON worry me a little. Still he had a good relationshi with Houlier at 'The Mighty Reds YNWA', so can see the logic. Keving Mac etc should be retained though.
Curtis Davies will be screwed. Thompson was scathing about his comments when MON left!!
-
Curtis Davies will be screwed. Thompson was scathing about his comments when MON left!!
He will only be screwed because of his own ego!
-
I don't see Thompson as being anti Villa. I think the players will enjoy working with him,he'll give the players confidence.
The only problem i have with him was his bubble perm of the early 80s.
-
I don't mind him, he's always seemed a pretty straight bloke to me.
Wasn't it Thompson who put the European Cup in the boot of his car after they won it, and took it down to his local to show it off to the regulars?
-
According to Wiki, Phil Thompson's middle name is Bernard.
Bootiful.
-
The only positive way to greet this possible appointment(s) is to give any new managerial team time and support.
Unfortunatley, this will be in short supply for Houllier and Thompson. For the latter in particular it will be difficult following his long standing appearances on Sky and his obvious affection for Liverpool, something he actually shares with Houllier only the Frenchman is far more coy. It shouldn't matter but in the mind of the fans it will, particularly if we are loosing.
If things don't go well pretty quickly I believe our support will turn against them and patience will be in very short supply.
It wouldn't be a bad appointment but it will be loaded with risk and could go tits up in a matter of weeks
-
According to Wiki, Phil Thompson's middle name is Bernard.
Bernie Bin-Dipper! Excellent :D
-
As long as the loyal Villa coaching staff ie K Mac , Tony Mac and Sid remain or are given enhanced roles I don't see what the problem is. This is Villa we are talking about if you don't want to back the club or the chairman after all he has done then I suggest you wouldn't be happy whoever was appointed!
-
Maybe someone can correct me, but didn't we have 5 scousers in our 1st Division title team? Withe and Mortimer definitely were, but I think Morley, Swain and Rimmer had a connection too. Oh and Tony Morleys first name is William but Willie Morley does not sound so good :-)
-
Curtis Davies will be screwed. Thompson was scathing about his comments when MON left!!
He will only be screwed because of his own ego!
can i add lack of ability too.
-
Morley and Rimmer aren't scousers.
Thompson played in the Liverpool side that shipped in 5 goals at Villa park.
Irrelevent, I know, but always nice to mention
-
Seem to remember Friedel conveying his hatred for Thompson in that book he wrote or an interview.
Looks like it's going to be Houllier and Thompson...can't say I'm enthused in anyway...but the best of luck to them.
I for one will be firmly behind them...does it really matter what he has or hasnt said on Soccer Saturday?
-
Fans of Soccer Saturday will doubtless be glad to see the back of Thommo. I think he's a twat, but if he does a good job, who cares? Obviously, to a point that pairing worked well at Liverpool. Certainly in the earlier years, and it also means Houllier can hit the ground running a bit quicker. Hopefully they keep Kmac around as number 3.
-
Seem to remember Friedel conveying his hatred for Thompson in that book he wrote or an interview.
By the time they can start building their own side in earnest (next summer) I think it would be pretty much time to replace Big Brad anyway!
-
Sounds like the media putting 2 and 2 together to be honest. Thommo was the bad cop and roundly hated by a number of players, mainly because he used to push them so hard. No bad thing if it gets the desired reaction.
-
Dont know if its been added, as I cant be bother searching through the scouse slagging that no doubt appears between the first and last pages of this thread, but I actually see a lot of sense in this.
Houllier is quite reserved on the touchline, as is KMac, whereas Thompson was always up giving instructions to the players, motivating etc. I think this is one of the things that will be missing without MON.
-
I will give them a chance and hopefully they will come good for us.
-
I can't pretend I suddenly love Phil Thompson just because he's likely to be sat in the Villa dugout but what I think of him and what he does for our club are two wildly different things. I want to see us win things and if Houllier and Thompson help achieve that then fuck it, they have my full support.
-
Seem to remember Friedel conveying his hatred for Thompson in that book he wrote or an interview.

You're probably right...still means that we have to get through a season with a goalkeeper who can't stand the Assistant Manager. I wonder how he feels about Houllier. I'd also worry the same re Carew, Heskey.
I know it's not Houllier's fault, but these are the players he is going to have to rely on til January and more than likely end of the season.
Doesn't help if he already has a poor relationship with a couple of them.
-
Nose-Thompson failed to recognize the genius of Jari Litmanen ten years ago. He repeatedly benched one of the best players in the world. For this I shall never forgive him.
Best of luck for him at the Villa though. Let's hope he doesn't get the chance to bench our most talented players.
-
Remember Thomson and O'Leary nearly coming to blows at Villa park a few years ago?
He deserves credit for that
-

If Thompson was going to bench our most talented players we'd start every game about five players short.
-
Let's think this through.
Andy 'Mr Claret and Blue' Gray. Told to choose between being assistant manager at Villa and working for Sky. Chose Sky.
Phil "Er, he's a Scouse bastud" Thompson. (seemingly) Same choice. (seemingly) Chose Villa.
Which one of those is more deserving of our respect?
-
STUPID FUCKING SCOUSE PRICK, ILL BOO THE C%NT
Yeah, totally agree. I hate Scousers. Peter Withe, Tony Morley, Dennis Mortimer, Ron Saunders... bastards the lot of them. Boooooo!
-
Gotta admit I find him the most irritating pundit on TV, and I think he talks a lot of shit! Oh well.
I'll think that you'll find that's Charlie Nicholas .. total tool
-
Charlie Nicholas is the only ex-Clyde player I dislike. He is also the only Arsenal fan who seems to love it whenever Manure/Chelski/Spurszzz score.
-
If a combination of Houllier/Thompson/McDonald achieve a trophy and a good league position I am not arsed.
To be honest most villa fans dont want MON/Sven/Houiller
Who do you want jesus/God/ the pope???
-
Just out of interest, would anyone have preferred John Toshack?
-
pinnochio pinochio give us a wave, could be fun ,bring a great atmospher too villa park, but we are villa so no doubt some fans will moan,
Hardly the best reason appoint someone?

Liverpool played better under Thompson, when he took over from Houllier, following Houllier's heart attack.

Will Thompson be mates with KMac from 'Pool days?
-
Morley and Rimmer aren't scousers.

Irrelevent, I know, but always nice to mention
Tony is from Ormskirk = West Lancs, whilst Jimmy is from Southport = Merseyside.
What do I think on Thompson possibly being on board ? Personally he irritates the **** out of me, however so did MON before he came to the Villa - I could learn to tolerate him if he is successful.
-
We need some coaching staff so if it is Houllier, and he wants Thompson, so be it.
-
Thompson a winner of league championships and European Cups
I dont see the problem in that.
Surely Robertson was not a villa fan
There does not seem to be another Brian Little around at the moment to come through the door of B6
I want someone there who been there and done it and then maybe the likes of KMac working in the first team system in 2 years time can take over
-

I quite like the idea of Thompson joining the Villa and having to revaluate all the snidey comments that he has made about the club over the years whilst being on the Soccer Saturday panel. Eat some humble pie Pinocchio.
As much as I get annoyed with Thompson and his silly comments about all clubs other than Liverpool, the guy is every inch a genuine and passionate football fan. He understands what its like to follow HIS club. More than what a lot of other players and former players can say
He will soon understand what it means to be a Villa fan; in fact, I guess he already does. It is no different from being a Liverpool fan. I cant wait for him to give an interview in 6months time saying just how impressed he is by the club and chuck in a line such as I tell ya Geoff, until youve been there, until you get a taste and feel for it- you have no idea just how massive a club Aston Villa is
-
Liverpool played better under Thompson, when he took over from Houllier, following Houllier's heart attack.
Maybe it is better to have a manager (Houllier) who builds an organization that can work even without the manager -- than a manager (MON) who (intentionally or not) ensures that things fall apart if/when he leaves.
-
If we're going to give Ged (I'm going to use this name for him like I've been doing it for years) the job then the board need to back him 100%, and that includes allowing him to bring in his own staff. Hopefully Kevin Mac will be allowed to continue with some form of coaching role at the club as he undoubtably has a lot to offer. I personally don't mind Thompson, he shows genuine pashion about the game and seemed to do pretty well in his role at Liverpool even if that was six years ago.
-
Personally, I was hoping that Ronald Koeman would get the job and appoint KM as his number two, thus giving us the Ronald McDonald combo.

Personally I am disappointed that Partrick Berger and Phil King didn`t get an interview - I am advised they had Dion Dublin set up for a role - our very own Big Whopper
-
Stand up Pinnoccio !
I am getting quite excited about a Houllier/ Thompson team.
There's some serious knowledge there, and potentially way better than the previous managment team imo
-
Not sure how true it is, but...
I was told the other day that Phil Thompson and Dennis Mortimer are the only two people who have played together in the same school football team, and lifted the European Cup as captains.
-

Nah Dipperville is a shit hole.
That said I let a jolly Scouser loose on my head with a pair of scissors about an hour ago, so some of them can be trusted with sharp objects. As for Thompson, I have no problem with the appointment. Hes got a good record at Liverpool, did a very good job when Houllier had his heart problem and most importantly hes a winner. I couldnt careless if he has an irritating accent, a large conk or if hes a big fan of his local club whom he played for. The fact these are raised as criticisms show just how superficial the argument against him is.

Just ordered thommo s autobiography to get an insight into how he thinks- can't believe he called it "stand up pinocchio"!
Hopefully we can get the official annoncement soon and look to the future.

You're going to regret that purchase if it's all bollocks.

Personally, I was hoping that Ronald Koeman would get the job and appoint KM as his number two, thus giving us the Ronald McDonald combo.
''Would that be with fries (French) sir''
-
This appointment is fast becoming a pantomine..................
Oh No it isn't !

Some people need to grow up and give them some support. They don't have to come here. Thompson could easily sit on his ass in the Sky Sports studio raking in a grand salary. He doesn't have to give that up to try and help our team.
Whether you like him or not, is not going to make a difference as to whether or not he will come here. The fact of the matter is he's trying to improve our situation, after we were ditched 5 days before the season. Grow up and appreciate the work that they are attempting to do. Same with Houllier. 63 and had previous health issues. He doesn't have to come here. We could have went for Alan Curbishley or Brown.

You make us sound like some needy charity case, we are not looking for somebodys help, we are looking for people to fill the vacant posts of manager, and assistant at Aston Villa Football Club. It is a job, we are not looking for voluntary work from a couple of do-gooders.
-
So we may be getting a manager who has won shedloads, has been responsible for bring a huge amount of young talent through in his own country.
For that he wants to bring his own guy as his number 2, a player who won everything as a player, watches the Premiership, including ourselves quite a lot, and is passionate about the game.
We are an unlucky bunch aren't we ?
this could be an exciting new time with a manager who is known for bring good, young talent on with a great knowledge of the european game.
Exactly who were we expecting to get any better ?

No, I don't make it sound like anything like that. That is the truth. With all the bitterness and resentment going about, why would anyone want to go to a club where they are immediately judged, even before their work begins? It's preposterous and embarrassing.
-
We could have went for Alan Curbishley or Brown.
edit* did not read the post correctly.
-
Exactly. Curbishley who said - Joining Aston Villa was the biggest mistake of my career, yet wants to manage us when his career has went tits up. Piss off Curbs.
Then you have Phil Brown, who is literally brown for a white man. ;D

I was not at all enamoured with the thought of Phil Thompson at Villa Park, but I must admit that was a knee jerk reaction
Just got this from thisisanfield :
Phil Thompson's biography
This isnt just a boring autobiography about an ex-Liverpool player. It isnt just one about one of the most successful players of all time. Its a fairy story about a Liverpool lad who loved his team so much, and went on to fulfill every dream a Scouser could have about his beloved Liverpool. This is the real Roy of the Rovers. What strikes me is that this book is written by a fanatical fan, not an ex-player.
http://www.liverpool.is/myndir/legends/euro81Tommo.jpg
It is structured well, starting in the middle where he returns to anfield after a long absence as Gerrards assistant, but doesnt linger there long. It going back to his start at Liverpool and works his way forward. The obligatory boring family part is actually at the end of the book!
What do people think of when they see Thommo?
Most people think of the Fowler incident when God was badly treated or the fact he was the man who did the dirty work of disciplining whilst Houllier picked the team. The fact he has a big nose.
But it is time to shine a light on all that he did achieve for this great club. He is as integral a part of the club as Emlyn or Yeats or the Iron. He was part of Paisleys (not Hollands) vision of total football: Midfield players as centre halfs.
Its like a real Roy of the Rovers. The local Kirkby lad, the last of Shanklys proteges, his future told at 18 (he would captain Liverpool and England). Replacing Larry Lloyd and keeping the Anfield Iron out of the team. Winning the Championship at 19, captaining Liverpool to league and cup success, then finally, climbing the steps in Paris, after beating the legendary Real Madrid in the CL final, to collect big ears as Captain of Liverpool: What more could any red Liverpudlian want?
His career spanned from Shankly to Ronnie Moran. He won everything there is to win. He became a member of the legendary bootroom after his playing career ended.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/liverpool/content/images/2004/07/21/alt_lfc_diy_mid1_150x200.jpg
As Liverpools star waned under Souness, mistakes were made. Thommo was sacked. But like all comic book heros, he got on with his life, til the day a phone call came through. His Liverpool career was ressurected. He returned in triumph to take part in the legendary treble, and to forfill the last of his dreams: He managed Liverpool as Houllier fought for his life.
If you want to pick holes, you could say well, he never won the title as a trainer. But, really, after all he has been through, after all he has achieved with the club, isnt that rich? Its like blaming Dalglish for resigning, without accepting everything else he did for the club as player and manager.
He was the first Liverpool born lad to raise the Champions league trophy. After the legendary Tommy Smith he was the next Liverpool born captain. He was a real Roy of the Rovers . He loved what happened to him, he couldnt believe his luck, but he was talented, determined and lived up to his early promise. If anything, he has a lot in common with Gerrard. The only difference, his medal haul is massively bigger !
In the book you could also get the idea he wears his heart on his sleeve or he takes some decisions against him to heart: But, then again, those moments that hurt him were losing the capaincy of Liverpool, not being allowed on the European Cup winners pre final bus, getting sacked from the bootroom by Souness without knowing the truth. I think any Liverpool born and bred person, who gave their life to the club would feel hurt in these moments.

I think we should thank him for being Houlliers assistant. Without him we may never have got rid of the Spice boy label and may have dissapeared downwards, losing money, players and status. It may have taken 25 years to recover. Thompson took on the hard job of disiplining a squad who were dictating to the manager. He did what Shankly did when he first came to Liverpool, he put the pride back in wearing the red shirt. We can all praise Benitez, but, he would have had a harder job if Thompson hadnt preceeded him.
One of the most underrated, undervalued players of all time at Liverpool, but, in actual fact, you cant find many better.
So it appears he has done a good job, is immensely qualified and played a big part in turning Liverpool round. I have an open mind....

Ok Reality you've convinced me; I offer my full support -''who needs Mouriniho; we've got Pinnochio, who needs Mouriniho, la la la la la la''

As much as I get annoyed with Thompson and his silly comments about all clubs other than Liverpool, the guy is every inch a genuine and passionate football fan.
The first wave of anger and confusion having passed, this is exactly how I now see it. He's a football man through and through and likes decent, attractive, winning football at that. And I would defintely welcome that down at Villa. Cuuple that to a potential European scouting network (at last!), a winning, respected and experienced European manager, and I think this is a really good result from the paddle-less boat MOn dropped the club into a few weeks ago. Well done the Board.
-
Just before everyone jumps on his back, I think looking at his honours list in football suggests he is a winner and we could do a lot, lot, worse.

Agreed. Under the circumstances, I think that this is an excellent solution. In fact, as a Villa fan I can't help but feel gratitude towards Lerner. Thompson will most likely be our manager in the future.
-
Thompsons record as a player has fuck all to do with his coaching ability, see Charlton. B. and Moore. B.
He is a decent coach and Houllier is a decent manager by the looks of things but my initial reaction is that their time has passed.
If they do come to the club I sincerely hope they prove me wrong.
-
Suddenly this move looks far less attractive.
Admire his one-eyed almost feral support for all things Redscouse, but he always gives the impression that anything outside of his comfort zone bores him, particularly if he has to discuss the Villa.
-
Not sure how true it is, but...
I was told the other day that Phil Thompson and Dennis Mortimer are the only two people who have played together in the same school football team, and lifted the European Cup as captains.
I think they went to the same school, but as Mortimer is two years older I doubt they played together.
-
I won't be too bothered about the possibility of Phil Thompson being Houllier's assistant... I've always quite enjoyed listening to his rants on Soccer Saturday and screaming "GOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAL" whenever someone scores against Man Citeh, Spurs, Everton, Chelsea or Arsenal.
His partnership worked well with Houllier, there is no reason it can't work well again. Hopefully he'll motivate a few of the players (Petrov, Downing) who aren't performing at the moment.
-
thompson was far from complimentary about us before the west ham game on soccer saturday. Saying things along the lines of: "They have to remember they are Aston Villa, what do the fans expect". Now whilst I am not saying this makes him a bad coach, it's not the sort of attitude you want the assistant manager having really. as a pundit he is paid to say what he feels and he was certainly on the side of MON and pretty critical of us.
-
I expect a Damascene conversion along the lines of "You never realise until you get here just how big this club is and what potential it has."
-

Have you all read Brad Friedel's biography? Has Mr Lerner? Brad despises Thompson, so it does not seem possible they could work together. "I'm not sure what happened to him when he gave up playing. He changed from a guy who believed he was destined for great things into a coach who maintained a negative disposition.... Thompson would rant when things went wrong...it had an adverse effect on most of the players." (pages 183-4.)

EXACTLY, i will welcome houlliler, but please leave that big nosed scouse prick at sky , PLEASE !!!
-
Why is everyone so angry about Thommo possibly coming to Villa??? He's a good coach with an excellent track record of working with our (reported) new manager. It must say a little about our ambitions that he is willing to give up his cushty job with SKY in order to join. I'm sure he wouldn't do that if we were not serious about challenging at the top of the table still.
-
this will be friedals last season here and i would hope and expect he puts his feelings aside about thommo- id expect a new keeper to be coming maybe in jan though as guzan is nowhere near good enough for the premier league.
good job we took andy marshall back .
-
This whole sorry debarcle is a nightmare.
Houlier is the wrong choice by a Mile, so annoyed about all of this it's untrue.
Mr Lerner got his wish by not spending any Money in the transfer window - surely he should do the decent thing and pay the compensation for Martin Jol out of the JM money.................

Why is everyone so angry about Thommo possibly coming to Villa???
Because they think it is the fashionable thing to do.

Or maybe because having watched him on tv for ten years without a single good word to say about us they doubt that he has Aston Villa's best interests at heart?
-
we are all in this together , please lets get behind gerard and thommo and give them our full support and backing , they are coming to our club and they want to succeed as much as we want a successful aston villa - lets put personal feelings to one side and enjoy the journey and see where they take us!

Wise words - a few more on here should listen to them.
-
Mind you, the idea of Thompson motivating our troops is actually growing on me.
-
I will back both of them but I aint happy!- Thompson slaughtered Curtis Davies on Sky for his comments after mon left so that should be interesting.

I rarely get the chance to watch Sky Sports News so have not got the benefit of your experience there.
-
Let's think this through.
Andy 'Mr Claret and Blue' Gray. Told to choose between being assistant manager at Villa and working for Sky. Chose Sky.
Phil "Er, he's a Scouse bastud" Thompson. (seemingly) Same choice. (seemingly) Chose Villa.
Which one of those is more deserving of our respect?
thats the problem, its just jobs for them,
Gray stayed at sky he is well paid, and has a far bigger and better job there than Thompson who is only on TV a few hours a week,
i dont think Thompson is coming to Villa because of any love of the club, its because its a better job.
i know you didnt say Thomo was coming for that reason, but i dont think the comparison is a good one.
Gray is a Villa legend, Thompson is a Liverpool one
there are some well over the top posts on here,
but if i'm honest, i'm struggling with this one.
i dont know why people post things like 'i'm going to give them a chance' you havent got a choice,
we will just get on supporting Villa whether we like it or not, thats what happens and always will
it wont be a thrilling sight to look down at the dugout and see a ex liverpool manager and playing legend sitting there.
it will soon be forgotten if they bring success,
got me doubts now though
-
I will back both of them but I aint happy!- Thompson slaughtered Curtis Davies on Sky for his comments after mon left so that should be interesting.
Curtis Davies should look more at his own performances than criticise O'Neill. He has been useless ever since he came to Villa Park.
-
First thing Thompson needs to do is to come on an all out charm offensive. Say all the right things about Villa and he might just buy himself a honeymoon period.
He seems very enthusiastic and full of energy, maybe he'll play good cop (kop?) to Houlier's Inspector Clouseau routine? be the best mate of all the players
The last thing he wants to do, if he does get any stick from the fans, is to come out with any O'Leary-isms about fickle Villa fans. He won't last 5 minutes if he does.
I'm not overly enthusiastic about this, but them's the cards we've been dealt.
-

I wouldn't condemn anyone for slaughtering Curtis Davis.
-
There's this weird attitude with football fans, that to to be a good manager or coach a man has to also be a jolly nice person. I really don't care if he the players hate him or what he said about us an Sky TV it's the job he does and the results he gets that matters.
-
not sure bout thommo being the good cop , reports ive been reading suggest houllier is the quiet reserved one and thommo the brash sergeant major type who gives out the rollickings - either way it seemed to work for them , and i look forward to seeing what they bring to our club.
as chris says they will be judged on results.
-
He seems very enthusiastic and full of energy, maybe he'll play good cop (kop Holte?) to Houlier's Inspector Clouseau routine? be the best mate of all the players
Fixed it for you, mate.
-
The silence from Villa Park is deafening, nothing has been confirmed yet.
-

Or maybe because having watched him on tv for ten years without a single good word to say about us they doubt that he has Aston Villa's best interests at heart?
Why would he have Aston Villa's best interests at heart before being employed by us? Do you have Liverpool's best interests at heart?
Let's not turn into Midlands versions of deluded Geordies and start insisting we only employ people who have got programmes and ticket stubs proving that they have been attending Villa Park since Johnny Dixon was playing.
-

So what about the people on this thread that have said they've heard him being pretty positive about Villa, including tipping us for the top 4 last year?
And wasn't he the one who was getting exited when Villa kept coming back during the 4-4 with Chelsea? He wasn't negative about Villa then.
-
I really don't see what the big deal is. He's an ex-Liverpool player from that part of the world. Exactly how should he have acted as a pundit on TV? Especially when he has no affiliation whatsover with Villa. I expect him to completely biased and equally love it when I listen to McInally, Dublin or Gregory on TV talking about us. If he then works for us, where we are paying his salary I expect him to be committed to us. He's a professional and I cannot imagine for a second that he wouldn't want the best for his employer.
-

In my opinion, he's a bit of a prick on the telly. If fact, I can't stand listening to / watching him.
I don't see what his allegiance to another club has to do with anything, though. Of all the players who have played for us, and managers who have managed us, none of them have let a previous allegiance to another club prejudice their work for us.
Except for O'Neill's insistence on paying over the top for shit Celtic players, obv **

the other thing is that most of our players grew up with allegiances to other teams. I'm sure Ashley Young isn't a Villa fan, neither is Petrov or Dunne. But do we get concerned when they pull on a Villa shirt that they won't give their all? It's the same with a coach or manager. Mourinho goes from club to club winning things. He might have a special place for Chelsea but when he plays them he wants to give them a beating. I'd expect nothing less from Thompson or Houllier.
-
I can't bear the guy - an everythin - when he's on that Sky thing - an everythin - but if he comes to the Villa - an everythin - with Houllier an dhat, then I suppose I'll have to just put up with it an everythin

But that's the same argument over a Villa player playing for The Shit - they're professionals and of course they'll play for whoever is paying their wages. If Gray was offered a lot of money by Sky to work for them why shouldn't we be surprised that he thought it was a better move?
-
If this is actually true and both Houllier and Thompson are coming, then I wish them all the best.
I don't think Thompson has been all that critical of us when I've seen him on TV either, I remember him going berzerk when we had that 4-4 against Chelsea. I'd much rather have someone who isn't afraid to speak his mind about the players. I'd be shitting myself if I was Curtis Davies right now though, but I suppose he has brought this on himself with his post-MON comments and abysmal performances.

I don't blame him at all, but I wish we could be spared the Gray is a legend/Thompson is all things evil and Scouse rhetoric.

Don't really know him as a coach, as in not at all, but I quite like him on Sky, as in more than quite..

Hey, that was really clever. Very funny. Well done.
-
I was just coming around to the idea of GH too.
-
What a stupid bloody comment about Andy Gray.
He chose to become a pundit on sky as his career, not to go into management.
He has done nothing wrong by the Villa as he is still there and always speaks positive about us.
If he had gone into management after then yeah but he never, so stop the bitching.
-
When i 1st heard the news i thought OMG No!
But the more i think of it the more i think it will be a better fit than KMac as an Assitant coach. He is more vocal, more demonstrative, more intense than KMac.
I don't know why but i like to see a bit of enthusiasm on the sideline, and KMac doesnt fill me full of enthusiasm.
Thompson is a big nosed Scouse twat, Moyes is a bigoted bluenose, and Hughes is an ex-scum player.I don't like the history of any of them, but if Thompson is a sucess for Villa then i can put up with it, after all i seem to remember a rather successful ex scouse manager of AVFC.

You could also make the case that for Thompson, as with Our Bri, that when you care too much about the club you worry about avoiding defeat more than wanting to win. maybe without that pressure Thompson can bring more to the job than he did at Liverpool.
-
I think I will find it quite difficult to like Phil Thompson but if he's who the new manager wants then so be it.
-
What a stupid bloody comment about Andy Gray.
He chose to become a pundit on sky as his career, not to go into management.
He has done nothing wrong by the Villa as he is still there and always speaks positive about us.
If he had gone into management after then yeah but he never, so stop the bitching.
Are you aware that Andy Gray was Villa assistant manager under Ron Atkinson, was asked to choose between the two jobs and chose Sky?
Your post proves the point. He chose to go to Sky and has stayed there, he hasn't done a Barry or a Southgate and lie just to get away.

Nice excuse but it doesn't work. He had the choice of staying with Villa and leaving, and he chose to leave. For the third time. And less of the "bitching."
-
Proves nothing in all honesty. Just because he left as assistant manager doesn't mean he hated the Villa, or anything like it, simply means he had no interest in making a career after his playing days as assistant manager, or indeed as a manager.

I'm not saying it does mean anything. My point is that it's a bit off to call Phil Thompson all sorts of names, and regard Andy Gray as some sort of deity, when Thompson wants to work for us and Gray would rather work for Sky, although I do admit that's an improvement on the days when he preferred to work for Wolves and the Albion.
-
Oh I agree with you there Dave. I have read a few posts though and it appears as if people are coming round to the idea of giving Thompson a chance, rather than writing him off completely, like a few done earlier today without properly processing the information.
-

Isn't it understandable that some of us needs to adjust to the idea that a duo (Houllier and Thompson) that once managed an opponent, now will probably be managing Villa?
-
Haven't read all this thread as I'm going out so don't know if anyone has mentioned this but my fear is that if Kevin McDonald is overlooked for assistant manager/coach then he could very well walk. We all know he is generally acknowledged as amongst the best in the business at what he does as reserve team coach. Can we really afford to lose a man of his calibre? Villa were in a no win situation from the minute Martin O'Neill baled out Kevin was the only real choice for the interim but once having tasted the forbidden fruit, so to speak, and being moderately successful it was obvious he would want a crack at it full time. Will he be happy to go back to the reserves? I have to admit to being a bit worried about this.
-
Im a man of few words, well on this forum anyway but please for the love of god NO
-
i think they'll be offers coming in for kmac from other clubs quite soon, (if he's not offered the job). now he's made it public he fancied the job full time others from possibly lower league will come in and i think he'd go. might be a loss in short term, but if he does a good job somewhere who's to say he won't be back in the future
-
Andy Gray only tends to speak positively of Villa when he's got a new book or video coming out. I have never heard him refer to our players by their nicknames but he's always on about "Giggsy" and "Scholesy". I never really hear him say much positive about Wolves or Everton either. He just loves Manure.
-
Southampton reckon they have had 50 applications including 2 from
current premier managers, wonder if kmac is one of them?
Why would anyone quit and drop 2 divisions , holloway maybe?
-

Quite, Houllier and Thompson, what a load of old shit.
-
If he comes to Villa I'll support him fully. I think it could work quite well.
-
At least he might get to learn the names of some of our players....

Funnily enough managers and duos come ago. They generally manage other clubs.
-
Well if he is half as passionate about us as he is for Liverpool, he might be good.
-
Lets be honest how many people used to give him the w****r sign when he was at liverpool? Now ask yourselves if you would do it if he joins Villa. Is that 2 faced?
I did and i still wouldn't like him. Look at Heskey i didn't like him and i still don't.
-
I wouldn't mind Houllier but the problem is the baggage that comes with him!
-
To be honest it may be two faced, but frankly in football it's inevitable. If leo messi scored against Villa I probably would have harsh words for him, but wouldn't stop me wanting to have him at the club.
-

I give Lampard and Gerrard the wanker signs whenever they're at Villa Park, I'd give my left bollock to sign either of them.

Are you alright, Dave? As far as I can see you're the only one banging on about Andy Gray.
FWIW I remmber Gray working under Big Ron, and personally, the idea of a lucrative career presenting TV sounds quite appealing when compared to the possibly stressful world of football management, be that as assistant or whatever.

I don't know if this has been discussed elsewhere: http://www.goal.com/en/news/9/england/2010/09/06/2106150/breaking-news-french-football-federation-president-fernando (http://www.goal.com/en/news/9/england/2010/09/06/2106150/breaking-news-french-football-federation-president-fernando)
French Football Federation president Fernando Duchaussoy is to meet Gerard Houllier on Wednesday to seek assurances about his future amid reports that he is to be offered vacant manager's job at Aston Villa.Houllier is currently the national technical director of French football, but is believed to be top of Villa owner Randy Lerner's list to take the reigns at Villa Park and make a return to the Premier League. With the French currently in Sarajevo for their European Championships qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday night, Duchaussoy wants to speak to the ex-Liverpool boss upon his return to France."I will meet Wednesday to take stock of the situation with him [Houllier], I'll ask him," Duchaussoy said. And it appears that Houllier's decision may be complicated by the French Football Federation's desire to keep him, with the president adding: "I would like to continue working with him."

So if GH stays in France, Randy would turn to plan B or applicant X - Mr Curbishley? Can`t wait to see what some of our impatient and irrational posters would make of that ;)
-
I think it'll just be a thanks and goodbye meeting. A polite gesture from a departing employee.
-
the most annoying thing is if houllier stays in france, it is likely that curbishley will be offered the job
what is worrying is that they have spent a month looking for managers and a week interviewing them and the best they could come up with is houllier and curbishley.....
doesnt that scare you slightly ?

It's from goal.com, not a credible source whatsoever.

Nose-Thompson failed to recognize the genius of Jari Litmanen ten years ago. He repeatedly benched one of the best players in the world. For this I shall never forgive him.
Best of luck for him at the Villa though. Let's hope he doesn't get the chance to bench our most talented players.
If Thompson was going to bench our most talented players we'd start every game about five players short.
How about this for a PT11:
Guzan
Young-Cuellar-Dunne-Warnock
NRC-Collins
Petrov
Heskey-Agbonlahor
Carew
Didn't bother to check his lineups from his time as Liverpool #1 - just thought of a semi-realistic way to ditch Ireland & Young.

I think Kev Mac took the interview purely as his opportunity to gain leverage for an improved position under whoever the new Villa manager was going to be, I don't think he seriously expected to be offered the job.
To be honest, after all of the support Petrov, Collins et al. gave him, for him to NOT have an interview, he'd have looked like a bit of a joke. Pass up a free opportunity to sit down with the owner and talk yourself up? That would be plain idiocy.

Maybe kmac has applied for saints job as they have had 2 current managers apply from the premiership according to sky.

Thompson won't join Houllier
Sky Sports pundit will not be reunited with former Liverpool boss
By James Dall Last updated: 7th September 2010
Sky Sports News understands that Phil Thompson will not take up a role as assistant to potential Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier.
Former Liverpool boss Houllier is set to take over at Villa Park as the club's new manager following Martin O'Neill's departure this summer.
Thompson worked with the Frenchman at Anfield, and it had been suggested the pair could be reunited at Premier League side Villa.
However, it is understood that Thompson will not be joining Houllier, who is currently France's technical director, at Villa Park.
The latest reports in France suggest that Houllier has agreed a two-year contract with Villa.
Houllier left Liverpool in 2004 after a six-year spell in charge, and then coached Lyon from 2005-07.
It is claimed he is set to meet French federation president Fernand Duchaussoy on Wednesday to discuss taking over at Villa.

Still dragging on..
That's been our entire summer. Shit dragging on. We have a match next Monday for crying out loud.

Sammy lee maybe? He was coach under houllier!

I'm happy now. Go get fked Thompson. Give keV mac assistant job

Sky Sports News understands that Phil Thompson will not take up a role as assistant to potential Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier.
Whilst this may be true, he's hardly likely to tell Sky that he's off if he's not certain that Houllier is going to take the job, is he? He's not going to want to end up out of a job because he told them he intends to bugger off to a position that never materialises. Of course Sky think he's going to stay with them.
-
Mac would not make a good assistant to Houiller, both too calm. The management team needs some energy somewhere during matches.
-
Mirror website saying thommo has done a u turn- he told sky he was leaving to go back to coaching and then today changed his mind and said he's not leaving Sky after all- very strange!

Been on H&V I think!

Maybe Roy Hodgson gave him a phone call lol.
-
He's got it easy with Sky,and if he hasn't got the drive to do the job its good we know now,and get someone in who has. I'd love the idea of Sid working with Kev Mac as assistants, bit like the past regime, just without Walfords no socks and Italian loafers combo.
-
Oh please. Sky and their constant re-writing of history, re-writing of current affairs and all this 'knowing' what is happening can FUCK OFF. They 'know' fuck all apart from what 'sources' tell them and this info nearly always has some kind of agenda.
Bottom line, Villa will appoint the best person for the job and we'll be left to support that person. End of.
Houllier might be inspired, might be more of the same, might be worse. I'll be jaded of moseley until further notice.
-
The power of positive thought.
Why don't you be a goood Pinnochio and go and play marbles on the M6.
-
First they understood he will be, now they understand he won't be. How about they start reporting fact rather than just rumours, lies and incorrect leaks. Tossers.
-
Andy Gray, Phil Thompson....any chance Sky can give Emile a job?
Shame really, was looking forward to Thommo on the sideline when Carew was having one of his lazy days

I think Carew will be off PDQ once (if?) Houllier shows up - they didn't exactly get on too well at Lyon, did they.

Probably less money. He'll be the whipping boy for his SKY mates when Villa lose. Some of the players seemingly do not like him.
Makes no sense to take it. At all.

If true this is slightly worrying as any new manager needs to choose his own staff. If Gezza (I'm trying it out) likes K-Mac then brilliant, but if he prefers Pinnochio then that should be his choice and Kev goes back to the reserves.

We've lost a manager, assistant, coach and a goalie coach, so all of them need replacing, and if Houllier is our choice then he needs to decide who he wants helping him out.
I'm willing to whack half volleys at the keepers to help out in the meantime.

Soccer Saturday will make for interesting viewing to see what kind of (if any) grilling he gets off Jeff and the lads.
I suspect it was a case that the money on offer was no better than what he gets for shooting the shit with other ex-pros and who can blame him.
Actually, having thought about that, it must have been more but probably no enough to give up the cushy number he has.

I still dont believe that K-mac wanted the job, he's always been reserves and has a proud record in that, if he wanted the job he would have made himself look more interested from the start.
-

Behave yourself, like past appointments we'll appoint the person willing to come for the money we're prepared to offer them to then give them twenty times more to spend/blow as they see fit.
We certainly wont get 'the best' person for the job.
-
I think that atricle is a load of bollocks, I feel they are making it up as they go along, Houllier has many years in the game, he'll have no problem getting a number 2 and I wouldn't mind if it was our Kev either
-
Having been initially chilled to the bone by the news of Thompsons possible arrival I have to admit that the idea had grown on me and that I think some of our squad could possibly do with a Thompson character making it clear when they aren't pulling their weght.

Definitely. Can't be doing with players telling the media which managers / coaches they like or don't like. Anyway, why didn't the come clean about disliking O'Neill before he left? Exactly. They will all be writing little articles in the papers about how great it is with whoever gets the job. Curtis Davies will be first.
-
It is good news for Houllier if Thompson isn't coming. Having him as part of the back room team would not have helped an already underwhelming appointment and given a bad start would have made things difficult because the crowd would have turned on Thompson. The negatives outweigh the positives.
It's not because he is from Liverpool or supports Liverpool that sets people against him, but the fact that he let's this influence his "punditry" on the TV. Biased towards Liverpool or any team playing a rival of Liverpool, acting with disinterest when not talking about Liverpool etc etc. He has no capability to temper his bias and as a consequence is a poor broadcaster, of course this suits Sky, after all they're not looking for incisive analysis of a match or they wouldn't employ Dean Windass.
If he was a good coach he would still be working in football and not pratting about in a TV studio every Saturday.
Having said that, if we appoint a manager he should be able to choose his back room staff, but in this case I get the feeling that Houliers job has become slightly easier without an unpopular assistant.
-
i'l be glad if Thompson doesnt come with Houllier,
i know its shallow, childish, nuerotic, or whatever but i just wasnt looking forward to seeing them both in the Villla dugout, and i dont mind PT when he's on SKY, he's bias but i accept that as he should be,
but will be happy for him not to be sitting in our corner to be honest
-
The thing about Thompson on Sky is he doesn't seem to have a single clue what he's talking about. Maybe in the Houllier/Thompson double act one is the brains an the other the mouth, but I've never seen him put across anything insightful a bloke down the pub couldn't.
-
Houllier should be able to bring in whoever he wants and not have have an employee (even one so respected and liked as MacDonald) thrust onto him in a key position. If that is the reason Thompson rejected Houllier's approach after seemingly wanting the role then it is an indictment of the Board's approach.
Either Houllier is the right man and you back him fully, or they shouldn't bother at all.
What happens when Houllier goes to Lerner to ask for £xm for a player? Is that why MON left? I wonder if those types of questions will be going round his head. Yes, it's a shitty way to treat a loyal servant like KM, but we either do this correctly right now, or we'll be in another mess at some point in the future.
-
I wouldn't have been agianst the idea of him being coach. Rather him than a statue like Robertson or whatisname 'the big sulk'.
He annoys the hell out of me on the TV, but I would never doubt his passion for football.
-
I've just found out what happened.
Thompson, Merson, Stelling and Le Tissier where all sitting round at home having a last cup of tea before he left when the lads started on their usual banter. In walked Charlie Nicholas with his Blackberry in hand saying "hey Thommo you big nosed scouse, twat" "Oi, that's out of order, la," he replied. To which Charlie says "Not my words, Phil, but the words of "Heroes and Villains website, look here" and handed him his phone.
He was then straight on to Murdoch asking for his job back.
-
Mike Bassett is nailed on to become his assistant at 4/5.
-
Having watched Villa and reported on them on Sky, and often not too complimentary, he decided that the rubbish Mon had left behind was too big a task so took the easy option and stayed with Sky.
More likely as he'd been foisted on Houllier once Houllier was avoiding the choice this time and went for someone with a decent track record.
Who, I don't know and won't guess.
Where have all the ITK's gone bye the way, did any of them predict Ged

More likely as he'd been foisted on Houllier once Houllier was avoiding the choice this time and went for someone with a decent track record.
Who, I don't know and won't guess.
Where have all the ITK's gone bye the way, did any of them predict Ged
I'm no ITK, but I did say this on August 9th in response to ozzjim's post

Jol is the only one that would give us the experience int eh prem and abroad, although him failing to win the league with Ajax to second choice steve worries me a lot!!
What is there in Spain - was Michael Laudrup doing well out there?
Rijkaard would be great in terms of the name, but not proven outside of Barca at all.
Someone that knows French football think there is anyone half decent in France that could do a good job?
I would have loved Laurent Blanc. Wouldn't be surprised to see Houllier apply.

Mike Bassett is nailed on to become his assistant at 4/5.
I really can't see Martin coming back, least of all as a assistant. He's holding out for the England, Man Utd or Real Madrid job.

It would have been amusing to see the backtracking he would have engaged in had he landed the role.
Afterall, in recent times he' said:
*6th is great for a club like Villa
*MON was right to leave
*Villa are a selling club
Even pre MON fallout back in 2008, when everything in the garden was rosy -save the bindippers coming in for Barry- and we looked like we were on the move, he was adamant that we'd need to sell as we'd spent a fair bit that summer and would need to "balance the books." (we didn't - not the first time he was wrong).
Don't have a problem with his Redscouse connections. Don't even have a problem with him not pissing in our pockets and telling everyone how great we are. Do have a problem with him having a constant downer on the club though.
As I would with anyone constantly rubbishing us either through print or spoken media. But maybe I'm funny that way.
Looks like this is textbook example of someone talking themselves out of a job.
Shame.

Thompson, Merson, Stelling and Le Tissier where all sitting round at home having a last cup of tea before he left when the lads started on their usual banter. In walked Charlie Nicholas
Short of adding Alan Brazil to the mix, I can't think of a selection of media types I'd less like to share a room with.
What a collection of horrific twats.

What has that got to do with my post?

He's suggesting that MON is actually Mike Bassett, by joking.

Ah, not on form today. Do excuse me. :p

I bought his autobigraphy on eBay to get more of an insight on him- waste of cash now but a good read- when GED had heart attack guess who was lying on the next bed terrified at the goings on in the treatment room at half time- a certain player who'd gone off injured - emile heskey!

I have to be honest, I don't give a shite who Houllier's assistant boss is as long as he's committed to the job. I never liked Thompson but I was prepared to give him a chance because he would have been the new manager's choice. Now he's not he can maintain his previous position as a know-nothing twat.

The guardian are saying it will be Patrice b...... something that was with him at pool till 2001 and then Lyon. Seems to have a good rep as defensive coach.

Some interesting observations (not Villa related) from Patrice Bergues on this blog. http://www.point-fort.com/index.php?Coach-patrice-bergues

Berger sounds okey with me. Knew his bits on the field.
