I just hope he plays his first team and Cuellar and Gabby are fit. A nervy 2-1.

Well it doesn't mean a great deal to me either at this stage ;)

I say fair play to the team that put on a solid display last Thursday but in such a tight game it would be too much of a risk to play that side again.  With a few bigger names back I will go for a nervey 1-0 win  Carew 48 Mins.

My team would be;

Guzan
Clark
Dunne
Warnock
L. Young
Ireland
Petrov
A. Young
Albrighton
Carew
Delfonso

I am sure Ireland can play as there was talk of rushing him out for the first leg [which was silly really], and having not been involved for City this season I don't see how there could be a problem there.  As for him and Petov, you need to give them more than a game to judge.

Rapid were very poor in the first game.  If we play two wide players not three and if we play the Fonz or Gabby rather than JC or EH, then we should waltz into the group stage.

The referee is Eric Braamhaar (Holland)

He is on the UEFA Premier List, having been relegated from the Elite category last year. Mind you, I'll be very surprised if he's worse than last week's clown.

Big guns will be back from injury/resting, and when 3-0 up, the youth will then make another appearance.

Yes, that's the spirit. You know you don't mean it really.

By the way, if we get through to the group stage, our first game is on Sept 16th, which is three days after Stoke Away and 2 days before Bolton at home. Not a very well planned schedule is it?

Apart from the Bolton game will be moved to the sunday (which also happens to be the day the Pope visits, possibly over-stretching the police?), so that we have 3 games either side. Though the Stoke game shouldn't be on the Monday night if we're playing on the Thursday.

The Bolton game would be the obvious move you would have thought, but they're still advertising it as Saturday 16th on the website, which is fair enough, but surely it might be wise to warn people that it could get moved in case people want tickets, especially the away fans (if they bring any that is).

Any news on the injury front? Would be good to see Collins, Cuellar and Gabby get a run out.

I'd quite like to see Fonz start, but TM seems to have something mildly against him.

Need to have one eye on the Everton game, where we'll need NRC, Petrov and Ireland, so at least one of those needs to be rested, probably Petrov.

We should win, but a defensive performance anything like the last two games and we're in trouble.

I've heard that Collins, Cuellar and Gabby had a 45 minute run out today at Bodymoor Heath.

Collins and Cuellar looked good but Gabby was knackered.

I actually fancy us to win 4-0. More worried about the Everton game.

I don’t know about a win. They treat it like an FA Cup quarter final and their main tactic is lump endless high balls into our box, which we seem unable to cope with. The horrendous defending on Sunday doesn’t calm the nevers either. I wouldn't be shocked if they did us again.

Bit of positivity.  Nige has to play, Albrighton the man to be replaced as he's started every game so far, and could be a useful option from the bench.  Ash and Downing on the wings, Ireland in behind the front man (being Carew if Gabby isn't fit to start).  And either Collins/Cuellar to replace Clark.  4-1 Villa.

MacDonalds last game for us.

I don't think I've ever seen an optimistic or positive comment regarding Villa from you. I may well be wrong though.

Try thinking positively, life can be so much better!

A comfortable win for the Villa.

I've gone with a 2-1 home win ..................provided we don't concede early I believe
the confidence we showed against West Ham will return and the fans will relax and enjoy
the match -

Would give Carew an almighty kick up the **** as he goes onto the pitch and
similar for Downing - Gabby's only got 45mins under his belt from a behind closed doors
match this week but should be on bench

Albrighton & Clark did nothing wrong in my eyes and tried harder than more experienced
players around them - let them have a night off ready for the weekend match with Everton-

NRC must start with Petrov and Ireland playing in support of Carew -

Elimination from this competition is not an option, especially if KMac decides against
taking the job and we start looking elsewhere-

the resaon why i would play heskey is we need someone to hold the play up an allow those flair players waiting on his knock downs to do score the goals. would have gone with carew, but last 2 games he has played for us has been terrible.
westham game misses a few clear shots/ headers on goal. newcastle game he skied the penalty and after that he apperared if he did not want to be there

Downing and Warnock rested...dropped I'd hope after our left hand-side was torn a new one on Sunday by, er, Wayne Routledge and some dude called Perch.

Seriously, are we taking it seriously or not? I'd play the two and if they under-perform drop them for the Everton match which is seemingly a bigger game for the club.

Problem is if we take that approach we'd also have to drop the right side, middle, back and front too.

I'm expecting to see a good reaction and as long as Kevin gets the team selection right then I'm confident that we'll go through.

Stewards at New Street will have to be on guard as there is a long-running feud between Rochdale and Rapid involving Lisa Stansfield and her non-appearance at Vienna's end of season do in 1993 when she was booked as the star turn and 39 tickets were bought on the assumption she'd be present to croon about how she'd been around the world but still couldn't find her evasive baby.

Seems a tad unfair as though Lisa attended school in Rochdale, she was actually born and bred a couple of miles up the road in Heywood.

I think we need a strong side out tonight to try and boost confidence, we can bring the young lads on if we are winning easily. Id go with

Friedel, Beye, Collins, Dunne, L Young, A Young, Petrov, Reo Coker, Bannan, Carew, Delfouneso.

Gabby to come on. He is crucial to us and we cant have him picking up an injury if he isnt fully fit.

I'm not overly bothered which of Collins or Cuellar partners Dunne. Whichever one is fitter I guess. Could be a big chance for the likes of Beye. I'd give Carew another chance up front. it is the kind of game where we are bound to create a few chances and I think he will be in a mood to put last weekend's display right.

We'll probably sneak a narrow win but the question is, at what cost? The match on Sunday is far more important in the scheme of things

I disagree! I think we'll find it very difficult to finish in a European spot at the end of this season unless something incredible happens within the next six days, but I doubt we'll be struggling to stay up. So we should really go for all the cups, domestic and European. Just imagine chucking this UEFA league thing away, and finishing mid-table as well- not exactly a morale booster!

I think we need a strong side out tonight to try and boost confidence, we can bring the young lads on if we are winning easily.

I thought that KMac had already said that he's more likely to play more of the kids rather than less of them

Has to play the strongest team available - simple

We are not Man U  / Chelsea / Shitty

Get the game won - we have a season to sort out the league - one balls up tonight and the season is as good as over

And another thing - this resting players because of tiredness after playing 3 games in 9 days - what a fucking shame

Not one of the broke sweat on Sunday so hardly taxing for them - the top tennis players play 3/4/5 hour games in ridiculous heat and then after 24/36hrs rest do it again

These fucking puff footballers are doing my head in

I think we will struggle to get 20K for this match - even with cheap offers on seats

I have not met anyone yet who is going   :(
well every season ticket holder who is in cup scheme is going because our ticket was free :-)

Loads of Austrians decked in green mincing about the City Centre with cans and bottles of wine in hand.  They should make quite a sight tonight!

Not sure about that. If you have a free ticket then its a bit easier to decide not to bother, given that its pissing down, cold and live on telly.

He said that he's thought about playing more kids, but he's also thought about playing more experience.

Agreed.
The only one who should be knackered and should have a rest is Friedel.
He must be fucking wrecked after all the bending over he had to do on Sunday, picking the ball out of the back of his net !!!

Bollocks - we could win the Europa league, we will never win the league nor, for this season especially, finish top 4. Netiher will we go down.

So, why is Sunday more important?

the resaon why i would play heskey is we need someone to hold the play up an allow those flair players waiting on his knock downs to do score the goals. would have gone with carew, but last 2 games he has played for us has been terrible.
westham game misses a few clear shots/ headers on goal. newcastle game he skied the penalty and after that he apperared if he did not want to be there

Agreed

Guzan; Cuellar, Collins, Davies, Beye; Reo-Coker, Ireland, Petrov, A Young; Agbonlahor, Heskey. Subs: Delfouneso, Clark, Lichaj, Bannan, Albrighton, Hogg, Friedel.

I don't. No width in midfield, and no left back. And Heskey. Still should have enough to go through.....

Only thing I don't like is Cuellar right back. You've got the two pivots for Ireland to play a free role and Ash and Beye down the left providing the width. Gabby coming in from the right, looks OK to me...

Oh good, I thought Ireland wouldn't of been able to play because he wasn't signed in time. It's a shame Macdonald is going down the same route as MON playing a central-defender at right-back... unless Luke Young is being rested or is injured I am baffled.

Ah well, decent lineup... come on you Villa boys. A nice comfortable 2-0 win will have all the panickers being, er... less panicky lol.

p.s. just seen Dave Woodhall again on TV lol.

Much more experienced and solid looking than sundays side.

But if things aren't going to plan with 20 minutes to go can't see much on the bench to mix things up.

What's up with Carew? Injured? Out of form? Or pissed Kev Mac off as much as the rest of us last week?

Come on lads, a good win tonight will make things look a little brighter.
