I am fairly surprised Ireland is starting.  I think NRC did enough midweek to earn a start.

I'd take a draw. Despite the fact that they're newly promoted we rarely seem to do well here.....

According to BBC he has the 9 shirt.

I know squad numbers don't mean a lot nowadays, but I'd have preferred him to get number 8 instead.

how odd, could he have been given 8 as JM played in the 8 shirt this season I wonder; it might be a weird PL rule.

Afternoon gents.

I'd have preferred to have seen NRC starting and Ireland replacing him at half time. Neither have had many games in the last 12 months and I'm expecting the Newcastle midfield to start kicking lumps out of us. It seems Kevin Mac would prefer to rip them a new one. I just hope the ref doesn't play to the crowd and leave his balls in the dressing room.

Come on lads, lets stuff them. It's going to be a tough one but we're more than capable of beating them.

it's on ESPN so there will be lots of streams about I would imagine.  I am still using Villa Streams; the new flash site has simplified matters.

Really looking forward to this.  Very attack-minded line up and it'll be interesting to see how we accommodate Ireland and what effect he has on the way we play.

Very important not to concede an early goal though.  Having a quick glance at a few Newcastle forums, a lot of their fans hate us for the stuff that went on when we relegated them.  Not all their fans feel that way - some reckon had the roles been reversed they'd have done the same thing - but a lot of them do. So if they go in front I expect the crowd will really get going and then we might find it tough.

But our attack vs their defence looks very one sided on paper.

Exciting line-up.

Would be a good game to get 3 points from.

Daft bird on ESPN "If Villa win today, they'll make history as they've never won their first 2 games of the season. Well they have but not for 11 years"

Beat a very poor West Ham 3-0 at home in a game we should have probably scored 6 or 7. We are not world beaters as some of us mistakenly believed last week (me included) and we are not as bad as this half time scoreline suggests.

Newly promoted team with lots of passion everything has gone there way in this first half, the gods are smiling on them today. We are a very inconsistent team, excellent in patches, average and clueless in others, this is why we are not a top 4 team.

Just hope we go out in the 2nd half and show some bite and win the half.

Mr Pissed off says, I really hope we can keep it down to 3 or 4 the way we are playing, and fuck off Carew, game after game you take the piss with your insipid performances.

I agree whole-heartedly about Carew, he seriously needs replacing. By Delfouneso at half-time, and by God knows who in the long term.

We really need Gabby back fully fit, and fast!

When was the last time we made a sub at half time?  Hopefully we will have today with NRC for Albrighton or Downing, or even bring Fonz on.  Wonder if KMac will have the balls to take off Carew at this stage?

Albrightons doing Ok in my opinion he's taking on his full back either side and keeping him guessing
but we are not crossing enough
that may have to do with 'Big' john going into his shell after the blazed penalty
Ireland made some nice forward runs but no one is used to playing with him yet so it is not going well for him
Petrov is not a defensive midfielder-nice passer of the ball but can't tackle or head or play rough

Carew and petrov off
NRC and Fonz on
for me

Well, at least we'll find out what Kevin Mac is all about.
It's been boys against men so far. Newcastle have had style when style is needed. They've been strong when strength is needed.

Right, I'm off to the "Who's our next penalty taker" thread.

Ridiculous first half.

I don't understand why we appeared to be playing out the first half.

The only dice to throw in from the bench is NRC and Heskey/Fonz.

We could get back in to this but hearing Keegan tak about 6 or 7 makes me want to puke.

Well, some dreadful stuff there. It was always going to be a tricky game (Newcastle first home game etc etc), but we really have looked terrible in places.
I really think the formation is the first balls-up; Ireland is wasted as it stands, and with Petrov charging forward then we have noone to break up their play. Reo-Coker on, and switch to 4-5-1, would immediately halt that, I think.
Carew is using up any goodwill I held for him very rapidly with this sort of lumbering performance.
I've never been that convinced with Luke Young, and today he has been quite appalling in my view; shoddy tackling, poor positioning.

I'm probably reading too much in to this, but I can't help but think that the players looked a little lackadaisical at the start of the match, and I wonder if that's an issue with no manager (permanent)? I'm always suspicious when players start pleading for their choice of manager - is that the right relationship between manager and players?

Ah well, well see if there's an improvement in the second half - there better be!

As much as there may be to admire in our attacking play, it doesn't matter if you can't defend and get completely overrun in midfield whenever the oppo have the ball.  5 players in midfield and every one of them is only interested in attacking.  Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the line up never boded well.  I suppose this may at least force our hand into buying a quality defensive midfielder or two. (although we already have a reasonable one who should be playing).

Other observations:

1. What the hell has happened to Warnock, how the hell can you get ripped apart by fuckin Wayne Routledge.

2. Why is Clark the one continously challenging Carroll.  He can't cope with his physicality, Dunney take some responsibility.

3. Mr Carew, your one quality performance in 5 doesn't excuse your patheticness in the other 4, either show some heart or fuck off.

This games gone now, but at least show in the second half that as a team we can learn from our mistakes.

We actually started pretty well with Ireland and Petrov knocking the ball around a bit, but if you are going to shoot yourself in the foot several times it's going to give your opponents confidence.   Friedel should have easily saved the first, and the defending for the other two was a joke.  Afraid Albrighton and Clark are looking out of their depth at the moment.

TBH Warnock has been shite in all three matches this season. And Young is showing why Cueller was getting in ahead of him. I don' know if that is because the wingers are lightweights or have just been asked not to track back much.

45 Minutes gone and Ireland is shit, Petrov is shit, Dunne, Clark, Warnock and Young L. are crap, the midfield doesn't work, the owner and board are idiots for not getting a new manager yet, Kevin MacDonald isn't fit to be our manager and the end of the world is nigh.

A slight over-reaction or two.

As often as I can, and regardless of whether he plays shit or not, I never see him look as disinterested as Carew often does, be as lazy as Carew often is or go into hiding like Carew does.

By all means slag off a Villa player if they have been genuinely shit in a game, but not before they have even set foot on the pitch.

It may be a bit early for a post mortem
but i think the way we started was good we got wide and passed the ball

But you can't build anything without firm foundations
we need a big mobile defensive midfielder to do the job Milner did stem the opposition-plug the leaks track back win headers and tackles

petrov cannot do that, he must be competing with ireland and young for the Attacking mid/in the hole position

Young can go wide or play Gabby's second pacy stricker role

We looked the better side for large parts of the first half. IF Carew had scored the penalty, if Petrov had got on the end of the cross, if Friedel hadn't palmed the header away so poorly.

It's true that there's been some overstatement, but it has been a particularly dire performance. I think it's fair that most of us will be recalibrating our expectations of the season today. We have a thin squad, and in Warnock, L. Young, Friedel, Carew and Petrov we have players in key positions who are looking really shaky for reasons of form and age, but we have no ready replacements for. There is also a lack of apparent leadership beyond Dunne.

We're really missing Gabby, Collins and Cuellar (any arguments about him being right back now?), and the full squad is missing strength and threat in the midfield and up front. And a manager.

Without being funny, this kind of game is why England will never win a World Cup. These tactics of Newcastle's - ludicrously physical - have gone totally unpunished all game. I'm not saying we're brilliant or that with better refereeing we wouldn't be losing, but there's no doubt that this Neanderthal 'style' Newcastle are being allowed to get away with would be impossible anywhere else in the world because of refereeing. Because of this, or possibly along with this, other countries put themselves under more stress to produce technically better players. If this is football in England, we've got no chance.

1..We need Gabby back.
2..Ditto Collins.
3..Our full-backs need a kick up the arse.
4..We cannot play 4-4-2 without Barry or Milner
5..The youngsters were made to look good last weekend and may not be the answer.
6..There's a lot of dead wood on the books.

Another 6-0 scoreline this weekend?

I might have said this just after 3-0 in the first half but i never in my wildest nightmares  expected it. Arsenal against Blackpool and Chelsea against Wigan or WBA you can understand but we should not be losing at this score against players who most of them were relegated two seasons ago.

Quite simply Villa looked like a team without a leader. In terms of fight and spirit, as bad as almost any Villa performance I have ever seen, against a very very average Newcastle team.

We need a manager with presence who can lead the whole club from the front, just like MON did.  Unfortunately managers of that qualaity are rare, so who the person is, I have no idea.

Hopefully this performance won't lead to any knee jerk reactions from Randy, but the club simply can't let things drift.

For those thinking that losing our best player (for the second year running) and one of the leagues best managers I'd suggest thinking again. We have a worse squad from last season and no leadership from the top. 3 top six finishes in a row was our best run of league results since before the second world war and playing a few kids is not going to better it. Ellis would never have got away with what the current lot are doing at the moment.
