Without aiming to jinx anything, they looked awful the ther day. I know it was Man U, but it'not like the past where they had some very good players mixed in with the dross. There really isn't one standout player in that team, and if we can win against Rapid tonight, a bit more confidence, plus our rested players coming back we should have too much for them. We have to be wary of the first home game back scenario, but I'm going for 3-1 to us.

Didn't see them against Man U, but I think we're comfortably the better side man-for-man.  Don't like predictions before we play tonight, but I'll be looking to see if K-Mac can maintain the excellent away record we had under the previous manager.

we will beat them comfortably if we play anything like we played against the hammers
also with certain players rested for the Vienna game we should be fresh
they took a bit of a beating from man U but they will look at our performance and quake!

Maybe this will explain it. From an article about the day we sent them down in the Newcastle Chronicle:

"That day Villa fans unfurled some unsavoury banners reading “Sob On The Tyne” and “Whose Your Next Messiah, Ant or Dec?” as Brummie fans, surprisingly, took terrace banter too far for some."

They take themselves so unbelievably seriously, and they really believe that it's a crime for other clubs' fans not to love them for their "passion" which, as far as I can tell, consists of being really fat and really stupid. It's so irritating you could just spit.

It's more the lack of self-awareness, Bill. If they insist on using words like "Messiah", how can they possibly complain when people use that against them? Don't they know how pompous they sound?

Martin Atkinson is the man in charge on Sunday.

In his last match, between Liverpool and Arsenal, he showed 2 red cards.

Dean Mohareb (chequered flag) and Paddy Keane (yellow flag) are his assistants, while Stuart Attwell is 4th official.

They used to be irritating but now they're just a complete joke of a club, they really seem to dislike us for putting the final nail in their relegation coffing two years back, conveniently forgetting how appauling they were for the rest of that season, suppose its easier to blame others than to just admit that they were shit, having said all that they'll be well up for this and i can see a 1-1, hope im wrong and we annihilate them though

Hopefully Ireland starts for us in this game. Would be nice to see the same formation we thrashed West Ham with... gotta include Albrighton again.

This is a game we really should be winnning on paper, and we know the cartoons are pretty bad, but we've still got to be 100% up for this as I don't think we'll win as easily as most think, but I still predict a Villa win - maybe 0-1 or 1-2.

Think he might leave Albrighton out for this one and save him for Thursday.  4 games in 10 days when he has little first team expereince might be a step too far and we don't want to risk him losing his confidence.

Tempted to do the same, with Petrov and NRC holding behind Ireland, Young and Downing with hopefully Gabby playing in front of them.

I'd be happy with a draw tbh given our pretty dire record up there plus it's their first home game since promotion and the battering they took at the mancs. And we all know that in such circumstances, the little club will fire themselves up for the visit of a big club.

1-1.

I think it depends massively on who is fit to start up front for us. If we have to play Emile, I can see a bore draw.

Anyone know the latest? I'm unclear whether JC is injured or was just rested for today?

I too think he might bring Ireland in for Albrighton, and NRC for Milner, but we shall see.

It's their first home game back in the Prem so will be fired up. The Barcode fans still remember 'Sob On The Tyne' so it could also be a hostile atmosphere.

If we play as well as last week, and they play as bad as they did against Manure on Monday then we'll hammer them. 8 of their team that played at Old Trafford this week were in the team that got relegated a few years ago so they aren't up to much. That said I've got no idea what to predict for this one!

Although I have a bit of a soft spot for Newcastle for a few reasons, I have to say the writer of that article should realise banners like those would probably have been seen at any ground which happened to host their relegation.

Newcastle supporters think every other club are jealous of them, for some reason. They'll want to win this match more than they'll want to beat Sunderland. A draw will be a good result.

The atmosphere will be load and hostile as it is their first home game back where "They belong"  WE will need to take care not to concede in the opening 15/20 mins and to take some of their enegrgy out of the game. We need to score first to take the wind out of their sails and then take the game over

WE cannot lose sight of the fact that they are still very shit once all the hype and bluster is stripped away

a nervy 20 minutes then we take control

2-0 us     Ash and Ireland

Not sure why they've got a bee in their bonnet about us having a couple of banners when they got relegated.  What did they expect, black armbands?

I can see them being a yo-yo team for the next few years so they'd better get used to it.

OK, now last night is out of the way I'll make a prediction - K-Mac's Villa to keep the momentum going and get an away win.  We weather an early storm and get one on the break.  Final result 1-2 to us.

It'll be intersting if he has  afew back to see who he leaves out, although Clark not playing last night suggests to me that he isn't expecting Collins or Cuellar to be fit.  Wouldn't be surprised if it's the same side as we saw against West Ham.

EDIT:  except for Milner, obviously!

Is the general consensus that Ireland will come in straight for Milner??

Difficult one to call. I would definitely keep Albrighton in the team, he must chomping at the bit to play every game now, so I dont see any reason not to give him a good long run.

It will be interesting to see how Newcastle line out. Even though they are at home, I wouldnt be surprised to see them line out in a 4-5-1 again.

I reckon their main aim will be not to lose.

Is this a 1.30 kick off or 2 o'clock??

I really can't see Heskey playing, even as a sub, after his performance in Vienna last night. I hope we stick to 4-4-1-1, perhaps with Carew starting and Gabby coming on if needed.

On the evidence of the last two games I think Albrighton is going to scare a lot of defenders. His opposing full back last night picked up a yellow card and I can see defenders panicking and giving away free kicks. If they double-mark him, it'll leave more space for Ashley in the middle.

I dont know why they are upset about us taking the piss when they went down. To me the biggest piss take that day, was how gutless their team were in the 2nd half when they knew they had to score to stand any chance of staying up. Rarely can a team in that situation have surrended in the manner they did.

Having Albrighton, Young and Downing across the middle of the park will scare a lot of teams.
That we'll have a player of the quality of Ireland coming off the bench (I'm obviously assuming he won't start due to match fitness) is a very good sign and really something to stir up a tiring defence in the last half hour.

How on earth do you mark those three players who can rotate in the blink of an eye? Man marking is out of the question and being even slightly drawn out of position to one of those players will leave the not only the other two open but Petrov bombing through the middle.

It is truly scary. I'm glad we don't have to face them!

Quotes from some of the toon lads on their forums

"Young v Perch makes my bottom squeak."

"By the end of the game Carew is going to be calling Colo his new bitch. It's going to be a long season."

If we can frustrate them for 30mins and get a goal the fans will soon get restless too. They're clearly not too confident about the game. One guy said we're nothing special what's everyone worried about and he got slammed.

I think hard 20 mins. First goal goes in, they'll bottle it and the fans moan "here we go again" and we could come out of this with comfortable 2 or 3-0 win

I hope Ireland starts, creates and then can come off in the last 15 mins for NRC to be more combative in application.

2-1 Villa

I think there may be something in this as his non-stop running really covers for a lot of players that fail to get back due to ball-watching, unfitness, lazyness or lack of willingness to tackle.

However, I think it'll only take a couple of games to get over that and Newcastle are no contest for the fire-power we have.

yep, reminds me a bit of the Stoke away game two seasons ago when we got turned over there.

Won't be a walk in the park, I'd be fairly content with a draw.

Cuellar's just tweeted that he's not in the team tomorrow. He's been given another week to get fully fit, so Luke Young should be playing at right back.

I'm not sure whether we should pop Downing or Albrighton on the bench for this. both played mid-week, and both played well last Saturday, but then Downing has played 180 minutes in two games which has left me thinking of a switch.

Maybe bring Ireland in and put him the hole behind Carew, with Ash going out onto the flank and Nigel keeping his spot in a central two with Stan. We’ll still have of width and pace, a player in the hole and a lot of industry and running from Nigel, but without the dopey European referee to ping him for nothing.

I hope Ireland doesn't start.

Chances are if anyone has to make way under those circumstances it will be Albrighton, and that will be a bit of a slap in the face after the start to the season he's had.

He might tire after the 60/70 minute mark though, as he looked dead on his feet in Vienna in the latter stages. Perfect time to bring on a not fully up to speed Ireland and exploit any gaps with his pinpoint passing.

The other option would be to start Ireland more central, alongside Petrov.
But a midfield containing Ireland, Downing, Albrighton and Young might be too lightweight, even for shite like the Toon. I'd prefer to see NRC in there. It will be his type of game, and I don't see the likes of Barton, Smith or Nolan worrying him.

As poor as Newcastle are, I think they'll be well up for this. And if they get some momentum behind them early on it could be tricky.

I'll go for 1-1 or 2-2.

Same team as last Saturday with Ireland instead of Milner.

A win.

Have Newcastle got someone who can throw 40 yards in an almost straight trajectory? And iirc we had a pen turned down and then they went up the other end and got a dodgy one.

Anyway if we do win we could be second until ManU play.

I know football's a game where anything can happen
but i can't believe the pessimism of those going for a draw :o
Our squad is on a mental up/buzz etc shackles off all places up for grabs etc
Newcastle have had a sharp reminder that mistakes are punished -and so quickly(not used to the pace yet)

(John Gregory's autobiog has a story of him not believing how fast the Prem was after being Wycome manager-he had got accustomed to the pace at his level,as some newc players have)

Ill admit it im getting totally carried away by the signing of Ireland ive totally forgot we wont have Milner today I think the lad has been honest and really has a point to prove and we need to get behind him to see his best ....Still unsure if he will start but I hope he does come in as somebody else has mentioned same team as last week with Ireland will suit me fine and at 13-1 for first goal Superman is worth a cheeky tenner of anyones money if he does start especially on his birthday ........also 4.5/1 for a red card is also on the books with this trigger happy ref !

Ill stop with the betting tips now and for the match itself.......Never easy on Tyneside especially on Live TV where the brown ale drinkin, pot bellied geordies will be screaming for a win over usafter us sending em down tho I really can see a hard fought victory for the boys in claret and blue.

1-2 Villa - Ireland  42
                Young   65

Come on u villa !

Crowd will be up for it, but their team's confidence will be fragile, so we MUST come out of the blocks quickly and make the place go quiet. First goal's the winner today.

Still refusing to subscribe to ESPN, so I'm taking my sons into the wilds of a Waltham Abbey town centre pub today.

---------------------Friedel-------------------
---Young---Dunne---Clark---Warnock---
--------------------Petrov---------------------
---Albrighton-------------------Downing----
---------------Ireland---Young---------------
--------------------Carew----------------------

That is the formation I'd like to see. Let's attack them from the off.

Friedel; L Young, Dunne, Clark, Warnock; Albrighton, Ireland, Petrov, Downing; A Young, Carew. Subs: Guzan, Delfouneso, Reo-Coker, Bannan, Beye, Lichaj, Heskey.

Note. 1 Change from team against West ham Ireland in the Milner and Davis completely out of squad injury?

I think Ireland will come on off the bench. Ease him in. Not played a game in ages. Wont be match fit. Makes sense seeing how the game pans out then bringing him on with 20 mins to go when their defence is tired and he can have a run at them. Maybe have Ireland starting against vienna, seein how he gets on there and then maybe start against everton

I wouldn't be suprised if downing starts centre midfield or maybe NRC and getting petrov further forward
