Now that MFH is off the books, we have the opportunity to bestow the honour to someone to wear the famous number 9 shirt this season...so who should get it?
-
Robbie Keane
-
None of the above.
Surely the new No 9 has yet to be signed?
-
Mods can you add an 'Next signing' option for me as I'm a luddite with this. Cheers

Bloody well hope so, that list is so very frightening ( not to the opposition though).
-
Fernando Torres.
-
Fernando Torres.
Fernando Partridge would be more likely to sign for us

Would be better than Harewood.
-
Weimann was wearing it last night
-
I would give it to gabby.
-
Keep it free.
I'd be happy with Gabby getting it but he turned it down before didn't he? when Marlon got it Gabby and Luke chose 11 and 8 IIRC.
Giving it Delfouneso would be a big sign of confidence in him from MON though...
-
9 should be Carew, Gabby 10. Unless we sign somebody else of course.
Honestly, I'd be happier with Bill Weimann as one of the four strikers than Heskey.
So if he gets the number 9 shirt I'm going to roll my eyes and tut. Maybe a period of prolonged muttering too.
-
That'd probably be the final straw with MON for me if Heskey gets the number 9. I know numbers aren't really significant anymore, but fuck that lumbering shite as our new number 9.
-
ABH, Anybody but Heskey!
Probably harsh but that's how I feel. I'd see Robbie Keane as more of a 10 than a 9. I'd give 9 to big John Carew or a new signing.
-
Give it to Gabby - he knows what it means
-
Big John
With Keane at 10 if/ when he pitches up.
-
Carew.
-
Doesn't Gabby wear 11?
-
Tell me if I’m wrong here, but due to the fact that MFH didn’t play a single minutes football last season for us, would that make it the first season since numbers were introduced that the Villa haven’t fielded a single player wearing the number 9?
-
Has to be, surely? They should have given it to me for a season for all he achieved.
-
Heskey.
-
I wouldn't say that our number 9 shirt is particularly 'famous'. Although we have a great history the Villa number 9 is not something that many Villa fans never mind other teams fans would ever think of. Our number 5 has arguably been worn by more 'famous' names. We rarely ever make big enough signings up front to put into a number 9 shirt. Harewood for example..... Hardly the Brazil number 10 shirt.....
-
new signing or one of our kid Weinmann.
-
Carew should be the number 9. Number 10 looks wrong on him.
-

I disagree about the no 9's history. What about Harry Hampton, Pongo Waring, Trevor Ford, Gerry Hitchens, Derek Dougan, Andy Gray, Andy Lochhead, Dion Dublin, Peter Withe...?

Aside from Dublin, it's doubtful that any of those names mean much to anyone other than the Villa fans in the playing squad. I doubt Keane, for example, gives a flying shit about Gerry Hitchens.

Well using that basis then I am sure that many of the players give a shit about the number fives of years gone by.
Though on the other hand, I doubt many footballers of this day and age give a monkeys about the history of any of the clubs that they sig for. Only if they have some sort of boyhood allegiance to them.
But to say that the number nine shirt isn’t important or to imply that it has no real great significance with the Villa faithful is a pretty stranger thing to read on these pages.

I 100% agree with you mate, but you've just confirmed the point - the significance of either number in Villa folklore is not lost on many of us but to any of the cads playing today, the only thing it means is an indicator of where they might be in the pecking order at the club.

To the players I agree to a large degree, but when it comes to the fans I still think that enough of us, certainly those old enough to still hark on about the days of the good old numbers 1-11, all see the significance and have great memories of certain players in the number 5, 7, 9, 10 etc…
EDIT Sorry curiousorange, I have just pretty much repeated what you have said.
-
I would have Salifou at No.9 If it means I dont see Heskey ever wearing a Villa shirt again......
-
Give the 9 to Gabby and the 11 to Albrighton
-
SIDWELL
9
-
SIDWELL
9
Strangely enough he was 9 at Chelsea if I remember rightly.
-
Leighton - don't forget no. 6!!
-
Anyone but the tumbling bear
-
Fabiano? Forlan? Dzeko?
-
For me the number still indicates the position and style of player. Gabby or Carew are the only ones who could have 9. I like the big ild fashioned centre-forward so its Carew. Although I voted Carew but have changed my mind and want it to be Gabby so take one voye from the poll for Carew and pass it on to Gabriel.
-
Fabiano? Forlan? Dzeko?
With MON, you are more likely to get Fabianski, Folan and Zelic.
-
Downing at 6 annoys me, if Gabby gets it then I'd move Downing to 11.
I reckon Delfouneso will get it.
I'd say our number 5 is probably held up in highest regard. The closest thing we have to a Man Utd or Liverpool number 7 or a Newcastle number 9 which the press seem to bleat on about, anyway.
-
I'd move Downing to number 12
-
Peter Withe
-
1. Friedel
2. L.Young
3. Warnock
4. Cuellar
5. Dunne
6. Collins
7. A.Young
8. Delph
9. Agbonlahor
10. Carew
11. Downing
That'll do.

Petrov can stay at 19, it suits him.
Heskey can have number 9...
For Stoke.
-
Well Weimann was happy to wear it..
"Obviously it's an honour to wear the number nine shirt. I don't think I will have it during the season - I am just happy to wear it now.
"I am going to give it my best for the whole season. Maybe I can get it into a few squads and we will see how it goes from there.
"Hopefully I can get a few games in the cup and perhaps in the Europa League."
-
Forever the optomist I've gone with new signing. But I'm also of the opinion that in these days of squad numbers a player shouldn't change number unless they're signing a new contract commiting themselves to the club. In which case I'm praying Heskey won't be sporting the number 9 shirt next season!
-
My guess is Robbie Keane.
-
Number 8 McGeady, number 9 Keane.
-
Number 8 Bellamy.
-
I sincerely hope not.
-
Laaaaa la la!
La la laaaa!
La la laaaa!
Keano
will be Ire... I mean Villa's new number 9.
That’s the foreign market you want to tap back into. People who will buy a real shirt and who will attend the odd game.
