I second that jp- Coventry is the place I would never be seen in a villa shirt! Once I took out my wheelie bin forgetting to cover my shirt, within an hour someone had put a brick through my windscreen!

The hatred of Aston villa here is quite incredible and having lived in the north east for 3 yrs in the 80s I can tell Coventry hate villa far more than any hatred I saw between Newcastle and Sunderland- sad world we live in I'm afraid!

There's nothing more pathetic than a club really hating another who couldn't give a toss about them.

Still, the Specials are good.

One occasion when they descended upon Villa Park (before my days of selling H&V) I was absolutely terrified on the walk back to the car after the match. A large bunch of skinhead lunatics wearing Coventry shirts were in the middle of the road just after Witton station smashing bottles, threatening all and sundry and being extremely aggressive to anyone they thought supported the Villa. There were plenty of innocent women, children and the elderly around as well as other Villa fans. The police intervened to cordon them off and I ended up trapped amongst the mob who were baying for blood. I was wearing my Villa shirt under my coat. I tried to get away and was immediately stopped by a PC with a truncheon across my chest. I undid the zip slightly to show him my shirt and credit where credit is due he raised his truncheon and moved me away from them, enabling me to get away. A bunch of thugs. Took years before I wore a shirt to a match again. Even now I am still wary. I can't stand them.

From my life's experiences, I haven't seen that Cov have enough fans to be of concern.

Granted, it only takes a small bunch of pissed up tosspots to start trouble, but I have never seen Cov as anything other than a small club belonging to a city that should not have been re-built after being bombed in WW11.

It is a complete shithole of a place.

Apologies to Villa fans who live there, but that's my experience.

PS. Warwick Uni is nice, that's in Cov....but that doesn't really count !

i lived in coventry between 1978-1983, good years to be a villa fan,
they dont like us, but thats to be expected, its nothing on the level of Villa-Blues in my oppinion.

remember Andy Gray scoring with a diving header right in front of us one night match, then trying to leg it out down the Gosford road, always quite an adventure.

as for Coventry itself, i liked it,
loved living there, night life was a bit rough, but so is everywhere,
dont know if its changed a lot in the last 25 years or so, but i have some very happy memories of the place

One of the main reasons for the hatred was that they went something like 50 yrs without beating us home or away.

Even when we were relegated we still beat them
home and away.

Not an away day I recall with any great affection.

I always thought the local council should finish the job the Luftwaffe started, just write it off as a bad job.

Surly, misshapen middle aged natives-  the type who look like the remnants of the human race after a mid range nuclear strike-  trying to outstare 10 year old Villa fans. Those weren't the days.

King should fit in well there.

Before the war Coventry was one of the most picturesque unspoilt Tudor cities in the country, on a par with York and Chester. There were something like 400 timber-framed medieval buildings in the city, whereas now there are 50 - and after the war there were 300. The council did far more damage to Coventry's architecture than the Luftwaffe ever did. Here endeth the history lesson.

They hate us, we don't care about them and buy any of their players we deem good enough. Sounds a bit like us and Manchester United. From what I can remember of going there, it's also a bit rich of us to complain about their hooligans causing problems.

And the residential leafy areas are still decent.

But the city centre looks like Chernobyl after a Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen makeover.

There are a couple of decent areas in Coventry and Warwick Uni is close to these on the southern outskirts. Living in Coventry I tend to get loads of grief from the inbreds but its best dealt with by playing it down and reminding them they are of no interest. They do tend to big up their rivalry. The thing is no one can be bothered with them. They hated Wolves in 60,s, Albion in 70's, Leicester in 80's and The Villa since. Believe me, a small time club with a small time following.

Rubbish bigad- I've lived here on and off 35 yrs and they hate villa far more than Leicester, never ever heard qpr mentioned by them and I've worked with loads.

Sports soccer even withdrew our new away kit 2 yrs ago because it kept being spat on,against Leicester on BBC last season all you could hear was 'shit on the villa ' throughout from their fans.

Delighted when merson sent them down!

It always seems to be nasty when we turn up. I remember seeing a big mob of them outside some pub on the way to the station. Then they broke off into little packs and headed for the town centre. Pockets of villa were coming into the station saying that they were everywhere. Cant remember the year but i think dublin scored for us first but it finished 1-1. I know a few people who have been battered outside. Mainly due to the 'they cant hurt us' thought. They hate us with a passion thats for sure

I think the Luftwaffe should be invited back.

Oh I dont want anybody killed (I have a fair amount of family there) but the place is twinned with Mordor and Prypiat. Its depressing and shit.

I love going to Nottingham because it's like 80s Birmingham. But Coventry is like some alternative timeline 60s when Soviet Tank divisions drove all the way to the midlands.

Back on thread title - I was listening to the radio this morning discussing this and they said may be a problem with women having demo etc , my thoughts are why just women protesting?  I would turn up to protest against him he is vile and should not be back being paid to entertain people , I understand he has served his time and has the right to a living etc but go and make one out of the public eye you vile man

East19 comments are bang on. They despise Villa more than anyone else by a long way. I have lived in Coventry for most of my 48 years and have many mates that are Cov fans. The only wind up I have with them is to occasionally show them a copy of my Birth Certificate stating Born: Nursery Road Lozells, Sub District of Aston, Birmingham 1961.
2001 and relegating Coventry was a superb day. My Season Ticket that year was next to the away enclosure and nobody sang "We'll Meet Again" loader than me that day, mates or not.

Yes great moment when Merse curled it into the top corner-marlin king shouldn't be given a chance to play at that level in my opinion but then again neither should lee Hughes after killing someone drink driving and then running from the scene, but I guess clubs these days have no morals .

What a great day it was. I'd actually arrived late thanks to a delay at New Street, and the first thing I saw as I came up the stairs was Hadji making it 2-0 to them. Then Vassell scrambled one, JPA's first goal (great goal as well), and then Merse well and truly fucking them with one of the goals of the season. SX, I agree with you, the "We'll Meet Again" that day was the highlight of the season.

It sure is. The missus went there. It's like driving into a different country when you drive through the campus.

You can walk around the campus at 3 in the morning, not giving a toss about who's about. I wouldn't dare do that in Coventry town centre.

Speaking of which, I went once. Didn't like it. Never went back. And from what everyone else has said, I'm quite glad it was cold and I was wearing a coat ... I'm sure some of the locals would have enjoyed picking on a 21 year old student with a Villa shirt on.

As I said earlier, I went to buy the new villa away shirt a couple of years back at sports soccer only to be told it had been withdrawn from sale because people were spitting on it in the shop- strange why they didn't just put it on a high rail out of the way, but apparently people were turning nasty and the manager had been threatened for selling it.

The sports facilities are great and I enjoy using their athletics track for free, only downside is the local tesco is packed with students every time I visit , strangely there seems a huge percentage of Chinese or japanese, almost like shopping in Tokyo.

I worked in Hillfields for 25 years. Once the prostitutes knew your car you were safe from them. Many a time a high ranking Director on a visit would approach our factory and a prostitute would jump in the passenger seat. Great amusement for me and my workmates. Great deal of drugs and gangster stuff going on there too.

The worse places for us (Housing provider) were the tower blocks. There was one that the Police told us we could not go into on Fridays due to the drug dealing going on and suspected dealers being armed. Its unemployment figures where always far higher than the benefit take up figures so 'alternative' careers were a plenty. I am told Hillfield has improved in recent years.

I got invited to Coventry v Villa 97/98 with a friend who had a spare ticket in a corporate box. We were met by the guy who's box it was and he proceeded to tell us how much he hated the Villa. Being a guest and not wishing to cause my friend embarrassment I bit my tongue and laughed it off. After the meal we sat watching the players come out and warm up and the teams were announced on the television in the corner. No word of a lie it said Sky Blues team....then said not Aston Villa or Villa but SCUM in caps with the Villa team then listed. Cue me after a few drinks roundly giving the guy who's box it was plenty of stick especially when Yorkie got his second. Everyone left as soon as the final whistle came. My friend asked if anyone was stopping (free drink going and all that) and the 'host' said nobody was but we could stop if we wanted to. So we did and drank all the contents of his fridge till someone with a blazer told us we needed to leave. All in all they have no one else to hate and can't stand it when we say we don't care about them. I didn't care one way or the other about them before that day so Merse's goal a few years later made it all the sweeter.

I once had a cheeseburger thrown at me in Cov.

My crime? Having a Mohawk. I took a bite out of it

Out of the burger or the Mohawk???

:-)

The burger. But I would take a bite out of someone's Mohawk if they asked nicely.

Good work.  Was that the game when we scored after about ten seconds?

I think they should contact Leicester and have a 'hatred' agreement, a bit like cities twinning. Not so far apart, both hate teams that have more serious rivalries, both are a bit rubbish. Perfect.

I remember seeing some very heated scenes between the police and some Coventry fans after a Villa game, possibly after they were relegated in 2001. It was uncomfortable in town beforehand as well.

Without wishing to sound patronising/condescending, I almost feel sorry for Coventry - the city on the whole that is. It might be considered terribly sophisticated to mock Birmingham in some quarters, but paraphrasing someone famous [ie, I can't remember who right now] there's only one thing worse than being mocked and that's not being mocked. And that sums up Coventry for me. Always in the shadows.

The police at Highfield Road were particularly wanky as well, they’d only look one way.

Godforsaken place. My old company's head office used to be in Coventry and so I did a lot of running in and around the city when staying up there on business. I never did find one single nice bit...

Yeah, the shadows of Solihull. Our interest in that neck of the woods ends somewhere around Balsall Common.

Used to work in Coventry, when Blose beat Villa they celebrated like they had won the Cup. They know that's as close as they're likely to get to getting one over on Villa.

Sad bastards.

I reminded one of them that nobody gives a toss about them and he said "Leamington hate us". I assume he was joking.

I doubt Leamington are that sad.

Marlon King's agent is Tony Finnigan.  Is he the ex lower league player who was done for possessing heroine a few years back?  If it is, he'd seem to be the ideal agent for King.

I can tell you for a fact that Leamington FC are more concerned about Nuneaton and Bedworth. Even the now sadly dreadful Racing Club Warwick.

My Dad was very ill in Coventry Hospital a few years back. All turned out OK but we were in the same intensive care waiting room as a bunch of Coventry fans. We were getting on OK until I mentioned our family were Villa fans - I have never seen, or heard, a response like it. Familial similarities were instantly put aside by the crazed Coventry fan that went off of one, telling me how he hated the Villa and Villa fans in general.

Says everything, really.

I have lived in Brum and supported Villa, and lived in Leamington and supported Villa. Bluenoses detest us but we are, at least, joined by our Brummieness. Coventry fans have nothing and they are just bitter.

Haven't been there with the Villa since the mid 80's but always seem to remember us descending in droves on the old Highfield Road ground with Villa being all over the place - especially in the 70's once when I think we'd just won the League cup.

Leamington fans came to Hinckley and smashed the place up, not that we really needed it smashing up as they did us a favour , it looked better after....

I parked my car up in Cov on a car park and went to see a supplier, I came out with wing mirrors broke off , ariel snapped and a dented door.. I had forgot to take a villa window sticker out...
