Title: 100 years of top flight football for Villa
Post by: Chico Hamilton III on July 07, 2010, 09:51:50 AM
OK, any other saddos like me realised that the coming season will be our 100th in the top flight.

Everton the only other club to have done this?

Anyone know if the club have plans to commemorate this? surely we can't let this pass by without something being done to recognise this milestone? Proud History and all that.

Chelsea can't buy the kind of heritage that we take for granted at Villa. Imagine the fuss they'd be making if it was them celebrating their centenary?

I didn't realise it but now that you've mentioned it I think you are correct. It should be marked somehow.

I don't think so.

I was thinking that.  I always thought Arsenal had spent more seasons in the top flight, followed by Everton and then perhaps us.  Or I could be mixing this up with number of continuous top flight seasons where Arsenal come out on top.

Does anyone have a list?

Not yet, they haven't. About five or six years short.

They weren't promoted to the First Division until 1904, 106 years ago. There's a relegation (1913-1919) and the break for WW II to knock off, so they're still on about 94 years.

Everton are number one having been relegated once which is some feat since 1888

we are number 2 I believe

And that's the number 1 played match in English football.

This is a big milestone that should definately be celebrated. As Everton are the only others that would be the perfect fixture for it to be rcognised.

Well spotted Chico !
This definitely needs to be commemorated...unlike Villa not to be already promoting this given the new regime are so on the ball PR wise.

I remember Graham Taylor moaning about the lack of medals for teams who finished second in the league.

I mentioned it in the General's thread a while back and he noted it. It would be nice to think the club would commemorate it in some way.

The General took note of the fact that the Villa have provided more England players than any oher club and look what happened! Just remind the gentleman when his thread is re-activated after the World Cup.

I think when Everton topped 100, they asked to kick of f their season against villa, as the other team with most games in the top flight. They were denied.

Is it also now the case that we've wont the league once in 100 yrs?

Yeah I remember that, it was a nice idea but I can understand why the PL said no, you would suddenly get teams asking for certain fixtures for all sorts of reasons. Still it deserves a mention when the two teams do meet.

The Everton fixture is in August and live on SKY.  It seems a perfect game to acknowledge it.

If only Everton had gone down in '94 instead of pulling it out of the fire against Wimbledon...they might not have come back up, they were that rubbish back then.

Ive always rather liked Everton, what I would call a proper football club. However, having looked at this we need them relegated soon and struggle to make it back for at least 8 years.

Who'll be the first of that list to break the pattern and get relegated?

You'd have to say Everton the most likely, unless Liverpool go completely bankrupt (which would be hilarious)

Yep.  It would seem that 1968-75 period is the main reason for Everton getting ahead of us - that and the dodgy keeping of Hans Segers (I think) in the Wimbledon goal who seemed to conspire with fate and allow Wimbledon to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory when Everton looked doomed.

If rumours are to be believed, it was more than fate that Segars conspired with...........

Indeed, Chico. The whole thing had the whiff of the "surreal" about it.
What was just as galling, if I recall correctly, was that our lad Gareth Farrelly scored a screamer thus setting in motion the Everton fightback.

Moving on to the Villa-Everton fixture I'm amazed both clubs don't make more of it and promote it for all its worth as the world's most played fixture (taking into account that the teams only meet twice a season).  If Sky and the Premier League got behind it too and promoted it in the right way it could become a fixture that everyone would be interested in tuning into.  There's no doubt that both clubs have a healthy respect for each other and a keen sense of rivalry that seems to have  become more intense over the last few years.

If there's a team out there that I love us to beat Everton is one of them.

I think it may have been Barry Horne who hit a 40-yarder for Everton?

It's a good point about making a fuss about it but with Villa and Everton not being fashionable clubs and with Sky and the Premier League of the opinion that football has only mattered since 1992 I can't see it being given any more than a brief mention in a Sunday 1pm kick off and that being interrupted due to having to go to another ground to watch the Chelsea team get off a coach.

Does wikipedia need updating by a season then?

To date Aston Villa have spent 98 seasons in the top-flight, the only club to have spent longer in the top-flight is Everton with 105 seasons.[51] As a result, Aston Villa versus Everton is the most played fixture in English top-flight football.

To be honest my whole memory of that match is a bit hazy...I mainly remember feeling rather disappointed that Everton had managed to stay up.  Fair play to them, though, they're a good old club.
