Blackburn and Scotland star Colin Hendry bankrupt
BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lancashire/10395494.stm)
The former Scotland and Blackburn Rovers defender Colin Hendry has been formally declared bankrupt at a Lancashire court.
Hendry, of Lytham, was served with a demand for payment by his creditors on 12 March, Blackpool County Court heard.
He had applied for an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) to pay off the undisclosed amount, but the request was rejected by most creditors.
Among the creditors was SpreadEx, an online betting firm.
The company's barrister, Tim Gosling, said there had been no contact from Mr Hendry since the application for an IVA.
No figures were given by the court as to what Mr Hendry is said to owe and no court documents were made available.
But it has been reported that the former Scotland skipper faces a tax bill of more than £1m and owes thousands of pounds to other creditors.
District Judge Michael Buckley granted the bankruptcy order.
Hendry was capped more than 50 times for Scotland and played for Rangers, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers. He also managed several lower league clubs.
The father-of-four's wife Denise died last year, seven years after a botched liposuction operation.

Sad personal circumstances. I hope he gets through it.
-
Yeah, always seemed a decent sort.
-
SpreadEX are a financials spread betting firm, like FXPro.
-
That is desperately sad news, I really felt for him when his wife died and now this...
-
i didnt think that Gambling debts were afected in a Bankrupcy case

Great player.

Aren't gambling debts unenforceable as they're "gentlemen's agrements"?
Guess what he does thie SpreadEx isn't technically gambling.
-
I think the SpreadEx counts as debts in that it's sort of stock-market trading rather than normal gambling?
Terrible shame about Colin. He has given up a couple of management jobs (including one at mighty Clyde) to look after his sick wife, then she died.
Hopefully, when he is ready, somebody will offer him a management / coaching role and he can get back on his feet.

Of course it's a terrible shame, but a cynic might say that death as a consequence of botched cosmetic surgery and bankruptcy as a consequence of squandering a career's earnings from a lucrative job are avoidable pitfalls.
-
My enduring memory of him is getting chipped by Gazza.

They are avoidable pitfalls - so are many other premature deaths. They're also very human pitfalls.
I no longer buy 'traditional' womens' magazines. They constantly bombard women with air-brushed photographs of celebrities, diets, articles on clothing, cosmetics etc. All designed with the sub text of making women feel dissatisfied and the message that the route to happiness is consumerism.
Added to which there's lots of comments on peoples' appearance - I can occasionally be guilty of that. I can't imagine undergoing cosmetic surgery [despite the fact that I can think of a few procedures that would supposedly improve my appearance]; I can understand why some people do.
-
I would guess that the wife of a senior player is going to be under a lot of pressure to match her younger associates.

My enduring memory of him was unintentionally launching Nii Lamptey almost into orbit at Ewood Park once.
I won't judge on the bankruptcy - I can only imagine losing his wife in that way was a massive blow.

It can't be easy when you see how beautiful Lizzie Cundy is in the magazines.

Good luck to him. Was a good player ....
