Title: Kent Nielsen vs Inter Milan 1990
Post by: Deano's Mullet on June 21, 2010, 09:08:34 PM
A bit nostalgic after watching One Night in Turin. Stuck a dvd copy of the classic Inter Milan 1st leg match on when we played a team containing  several of the West German World Cup winning  team. Twenty years on and still one of the greatest goals i've ever seen at Villa Park. I remember being in the North Stand Upper that night so was stood right behind him when he swung his right boot and smashed it past Zenga. I'll have a look and see if i can find it on youtube and stick it on here. Anyone have any memories of this match. I remember Andy Comyn playing instead of God and even Cas had a decent game that night. And Paul Birch bless him was a real terrier in midfield.

Remember looking at their team sheet and thinking Not. A. Chance.

Zenga, Bergomi, Serena and a few others from the Italian squad; Brehme, Klinsmann and Matthaus from the German squad.

And we hammered them. Birch kept Matthaus in his back pocket and Tony Daley produced the kind of performance that we all knew he was capable of. But to do it against such top class opposition was something else.

The mind could be playing tricks (has it really been almost 20 years?!), but I think he had a goal disallowed that -had it been given- would have topped the ones he scored v Everton, Arsenal  and Man Citeh for quality.

It was a great solo run but the referee blew for something so Zenga didnt even bother diving for the shot so the final effort looked quite tame IIRC.

Believe it or not, that was the only time I have ever bet anything on a game of football, and I bet that Kent Nielsen would score the first goal of the game, at odds of 25-1.

LOL

It would have filled a bucket lol

Remember Platts goal as well a defence splitting pass by Sid I think.

Then the travesty of the game in the San Siro.

Cheating bastards

This is the 2nd leg. You can see how how far the ball was over the line in the replay at 2:57.

I can still picture it as clear as day from where we were stood.

As pointed out earlier though, we were way out of our depth that night and had it gone to extra time we would have lost.

It's a bit embarassing that we keep eulogising over a UEFA Cup first round game we lost on aggregate.

It was a massive game at the time Dave, thanks to the European ban, and they were just about about the finest collection of players in the world.
And if you're my age, and started watching the Villa just after the glory days finished, it holds a special place.

Forgot how bad the pitch was at the San Siro that night.

That was a year or two after the stadium was revamped for the World Cup - it took them a long time to get the pitch right in the San Siro.
