*whistles Sweet Georgia Brown* (http://www.harlemglobetrotters.com/schedule/find/)

Went to see the Harlem Globetrotters in Vegas in February and despite the venue being half-empty, it was still great. The Washington Generals were appalling, so bad that I think I could play for them (hmm, there's a thought), but the Globetrotters demonstrated some great skills and were really entertaining. Wasn't disappointed at all and the retro hoodie and t-shirt I got have got some entirely justified attention on the tube. Quality stuff.

They're just finishing a brief UK tour and a friend went to see them in Brum and said it was exactly the same: poor crowd, great entertainment for little kids and big-never-really-grown-up-kids. Should probably have mentioned this sooner then really!

And so it is

LeBron's joining Dwayne Wade (who re-signed with the Heat) and Chris Bosh (who's joining from Toronto).

The Heat are now clear favorites in the NBA Eastern Division. However, the team will have to work hard to obtain a decent supporting cast within the salary cap.

US TV today has been "all LeBron, all of the time". ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN News are all covering the story at the moment.

There's been video of LeBron jerseys being burned in Cleveland.

LeBron asked for an got a one how show on ESPN to announce his decision. It seems a very cold way to tell the Cavaliers fans that he's leaving Cleveland.

LeBron is now right up there with Art Modell as the most hated figure in Cleveland

From the Cavs website

Quote
Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER 'KING' WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day....

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue....

Dan Gilbert

Majority Owner

Cleveland Cavaliers

Was just about to say have you seen Dan Gilbert's rant! - I'll be honest; I think on paper Heat should walk the East and to be honest win the whole thing but things aren't won on paper. My outside bet for next year is the Oklahoma Thunder. Kevin Duarant and the young lads down there with a bit of luck will do well.

I see that the Celtics have signed J - O'Neil; which will somehow cover Perkins for the start until he's back in Jan but also provide KG with a bit of support and rest when needed.

I wouldn't bet on the Heat until they have more than 4 guys under contract. Even the great teams need more than 3 great players and Lebron has said that himself. They will definitely be fun to watch this year though! Miami will be the center of the basketball universe.

Can I request that the name "Lebron" gets the same filter treatment that Steve Hodge gets?

He crapped on Cleveland fans in about the worst way imaginable.  Eveyrone here thought Barry was a traitor, but at least he was nice enough to not string everyone along for 2 months and make a national, hour-long TV show to stiff his old home-town fans.

But Lebron took a lot less money than he could of else were including Cleveland he moved for basketball reasons which I kind of respect he wants/NEEDS to win a Championship and Miami to be honest with Bosh and D-Wade was his best option.

Anyone who has a problem with Lebron is nuts...
Sorry, but the Cavs didn't "discover" him or "give him his big break", they drafted him.  And he gave them SEVEN years!!!!

SEVEN!!!!

They took him for granted, figured he wasn't going to leave and never put a solid team around him.  Who did they put in there with him?  Shaq? is it 1992?  Am I missing something?  Delonte "Without Jameer Nelson I suck" West?

I mean really.  He's 25 and has lived his whole like in an area of about 60 miles.

It's CRAZY to be mad at him.

We always say these guys are selfish and care more about being a star than the team.  So then when a guy gives up being the big solo star to be on a good team, we do the same thing?

Also, Gilbert has officially BURIED the franchise.  Mark my words, NO big free agent will ever go to cleveland after seeing what a nut job their owner is.
Title: Basketball
Post by: ExclDawg on July 13, 2010, 03:28:21 AM
I hate this rediculous, "He gave them 7 years" argument.  Big deal ... If he wanted to leave, that's fine.  But the way he did it was this biggest load of crap one could possibly do to a city.

That entire team was based around moves that Lebron approved or wanted to make.  He has his fingerprints all over that entire roster.  They never took him for granted ... they bent over backwards to appease him.  Also, name one player the Cavs could of picked up that would of really helped or one trade that they shot down that would of made the Cavs instant contenders.  You can't ... because the NBA is set up so that the good players usually stay where they are.  The Cavs never had a high draft pick to draft another bigtime player, there were no great free agents they could of signed, and there were no trades to be had that would of given them a superstar.

But outside of that, if Lebron wanted to leave, fine ... not to many people would of held it against him if he really wanted out.  But he did it in the worst way possible.  Mailed it in for the playoffs so the Cavs exited early, led everyone on thinking they had a chance to sign or re-sign him, then made a 1 hour TV special, where he basically flipped his finger at the city of Cleveland to 30 million viewers.

If you're going to leave your wife for a younger girl, do you slip out the backdoor, or do you announce it on the jumbotron?  He didn't even bother to notify, let alone thank the guy who paid 7 years worth of his checks.  Even in the business world, most respectable people give 2 weeks notice.  Lebron just flipped a finger, and said "enjoy the crappy roster I helped build for you and enjoy the table scraps from the rest of free agency cause I dragged this on for so long."

Was that the Miami Heat James was playing for? I swear it just looked like he was playing for the Cavs doing all the work getting the most points. You can't hate on LeBron, his debut was pretty good for Miami... THIS IS LEBRON'S TEAM NOT WADE'S.

Bosh was just poor... for someone who is 6'10 he's a bit of pussy. Wade wasn't as bad but he wasn't exactly good either, Lebron kept it going for them until Boston just edged it out in the end. From an offense point of view Miami get a grade C... this is a work in progress, it was their first game of the season against a very solid defensive Boston Celtics, it's gonna get better in due course.

Deron Williams is class... I watched a great Utah team topple the Lakers on Friday night, great comeback for them, I do really rate Utah highly; they've also got Okur to comeback from injury too.

Oh, and it's the 'unbeatables' who are at 9-8 now... oh dear, not looking very good is it? They're like Man City, just a team of individuals, no cohesion - nothing. I do believe the job is too big for Spoelstra, too much pressure on such a young coach - if this continues they need to get Riley as coach ASAP - an experienced coach who'll know how to manage all these 'superstars'. Miami @ Cleveland next week - gonna be epic, especially if the unthinkable happens, Cavs win (with how Miami are playing, especially on the road, I might put a Bid on Cavs to win that one).

Miami Heat have got LeBron's former team to thank... ever since that demolition of the Cavs they have been unstoppable, just losing once in 25 games. They've clicked, and the big 3 are starting to play like the big 3. Wade is such a baller.

The Lol Lakers looking very shaky at the moment... can't see them making a 4th straight finals appearence.

A mate of mine is a Syracuse alum. Therefore, one of the few NBA players whose career I've followed is Carmelo Anthony.

It appears that he's got his wish and will be traded from Denver to New York.

If the Knicks can now obtain Chris Paul and maybe even Dwight Howard, they'll have a lineup that'll be able to contend with Miami and Boston

The Carmelo Anthony Trade Show Part 563 is now over folks. Finally we can stop hearing ESPN say "Carmelo Anthony is going to sign for *insert random team here*.

Melo is a very good player though. I imagine Stoudemire will be doing more of the defensive work now, but I can't believe the Knicks have traded two really solid players who've done well for the Knicks this season. Felton and Gallinari have done really well, interesting to see how quickly this team can 're-form' and gel.

P.S. March Madness is on the horizon. So excited.

I have been away, but now I am back and let me say two things...

1) I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS CARMELO TRADE!!!

It actually makes me mad when I hear other knicks fans say they gave up too much.

2) On Tuesday, my boy Jameer Nelson and the Magic beat the knicks, which is bittersweet, because I always want Jameer to play well, but it's a dilema when he plays the knicks.
But what did Jameer's game show us in comparison to Chris Paul's game the next night?
From WAAAAAAAY back in the ncaa tourney when st. joes beat up wake forrest, Jameer Nelson has been outplaying Chris Paul on every stage of thegame.  He doesn't have the marketing, or the hype, but he is the better PG.  Period.
And he is a good person with a nice family (maybe CP3 is too, but I don't know), it is about time he gets some credit.  (yeah I realize he has been an all-star etc, but he is never thought of in the same sentence as CP3)

DETROIT PISTONS

Challenge the average American to play a word-association game with “Detroit,” and the nicknames “Motor City” and “Motown” are sure to come to mind.

Lucky for Pistons fans, the English equivalents are both neatly packaged in one city. Birmingham.

One-time home to British Leyland, the industrial giant behind Jaguar, Rover, and the Mini.

A shabby industrial town that also gifted the world Judas Priest, Musical Youth, and Electric Light Orchestra.

And ASTON VILLA FOOTBALL CLUB. A bland team, not unlike Detroit, that could benefit from a spot of rebuilding.

Thank god this is over.

I really do like basketball.

My father, despite being only about five seven was always a great player (at 61, he still can't miss a three), ans basketball (the knicks) were always on TV as a kid growing up.  I think I like the knicks more for the nostalgia than anything, but regardless, I like them.

being five nine, hockey was always my sport over basketball, but I have always loved the short guards like Jameer Nelson, Allen Iverson, Chris Paul,  Nate Robinson, Mugsy Bougs, and even named my older son Jackson, after Mark Jackson.*

*I really didn't do this, but I tell people I did just to see the shock on their face. **

**I also tell people I named the younger one Declan, after Elvis Costello (aka Declan McManus), but this isn't true either and makes my wife annoyed when I tell people this. (or, actually, maybe it IS true, and I told her it wasn't true in order to get the name...)

The Knicks won their 7th straight.

Remember, they're doing this without Carmelo Anthony. Although he's a star player, they're a far better team without him.

In fact, the Nuggets are also a better team since they traded 'Melo to New York.

As for Lin-sanity........... that three he knocked down at the buzzer to beat the Raptors showed the composure you'd expect from a Harvard man and some serious cojones to let the clock run down that far.

Why is LeBron so unpopular?

Because of the way he acted when he left Cleveland for Miami. He made a big fuss about choosing a new team, made the announcement in a TV special and then had a welcome party where he predicted that he'd win eight or more championships in Miami. Overall he acted very strangely for someone who'd behaved very well throughout his High School hype and early years in Cleveland.

Now, a few years later, he's not the hated figure that he was but he'll never fully recover his previous reputation.

Yes, in Cleveland at least.

Some people in Miami are probably a bit pissed off but its the type of place that'll always be able to recruit free-agents. Whereas, in the case of Cleveland you've either got to be from the area or offered a shed-load of money to go there.

Normally I take a passing interest and have a bracket. However this year I'm way behind on my US sports podcasts and I didn't watch any pre-madness games. Therefore I didn't do a bracket.

I've been seeing plenty of photos/reports from friends on Facebook who have been at games but haven't watched any of the games on TV.

I did check ESPN this morning to see who made the Final Four. I see that Kentucky is still on course for a perfect season.

The Warriors win the championship. Cleveland's wait goes on.

I was in Cleveland on the night of game 4. Tried all I could to get a ticket but couldn't find a work around for the restrictive ID requirements of the ticket resale system. The touts were also using the same system, so I couldn't even buy on on the street.

I watched the game in a bar close to the arena with a mate of mine and a Warriors fan who'd flown up from Atlanta but whose ticket had fallen through. The atmosphere was great.

Another friend, who's a Warriors fan, was in the arena and she gave me the freebie Cavs t-shirt that was on each seat.

Gonzaga and Syracuse battling tonight to be the only seed higher than 7 to make it to the Elite Eight this year. The South and West are all set:

South: 1 Kansas v 2 Villanova
West: 1 Oregon v 2 Oklahoma

(boring)

Still to play:
East: 1 UNC v 5 Indiana
          6 ND v 7 Wisconsin

Midwest: 1 Virginia v 4 Iowa St
               11 Gonzaga v 10 Syracuse

Rarer still is a double-digit seed making the Final Four. The highest seed to ever win the championship was my alma mater, Villanova (#8) in 1985.

Lots of great stats here:

Wardell the Younger is a bit good at this basketball lark.

When he was coming out of college it looked like Steph would be a pretty good sixth man (shooter off the bench) but would get an extended look based on who his dad was.

People are only just now realising that the NBA is fixed?

Quote
Since 1984, Stern’s first year as the head of the league, the gold standard for the Finals has been to have teams with big stars and huge personalities to pump up drama and draw viewers—not that much different than the way pro wrestling deliberately manufactures feuds between its stars.

When the matchups don’t raise the pulse—think of the San Antonio Spurs vs. the New Jersey Nets in 2003—the ratings are dismal. Sadly, for all his reliability and consistent play, it’s doubtful that Tim Duncan has ever kept anyone glued to the TV.

It's tough to be the best team over the course of 82 games (basketball and ice hockey) and then be expected to win 4 best of 7 game series as well!

Look at the Penguins this year in hockey, they were terrible half-way through the season, but were without question the hottest team going into the playoffs - the proverbial team that nobody wanted to play - and they won the lot.

I've been following the playoffs through reddit quite a bit and I find the narrative of "Durant broke the league" quite interesting. There seems to be a distinct lack of respect for a great player joining a great team and being great. He should have tried to build a franchise somewhere himself seems to be the consensus.

Shame they're now level with the Celtics but I can live with them winning this one for Kobe.

Jordan will always be the GOAT!

Jordan
LeBron
KAJ
Magic
Wilt/Russell (before my time, so not sure which would be 5th)

Wilt/Russell (before my time, so not sure which would be 5th)

Both of those before my time but Larry Bird would be in the discussion for top 5.

Wes’ other team, the Milwaukee Bucks are taking yet another kicking in the playoffs. So much talent and yet this coach who is brilliant in the regular season is once again fucking it up in the post season where it really matters. It won’t shock me at all if they go out in the second round he will get the bullet.

They went 3-2 down but have now forced game 7.

It’ll be tough for them at the Nets, all games gone with home advantage so far.

It'll be quite some performance if the Bucks win it all now

Giannis is out for the playoffs

Basketball is the team sport where one player can dominate the most

Winner of Bucks v Hawks will meet the Suns in the finals

Bucks (no Giannis) win, 3-2 up

Wes's Bucks at 2-2 in finals. Giannis is playing. Seems an exciting series but was reading something yesterday saying the Euros final got higher viewership than any of the Finals games so far.

Milwaukee v Phoenix ain’t Lakers v Celtics, so TV figures are likely to be down.

Just looked at the two squads. I only recognised three names, Giannis, Lopez & Chris Paul.

I’m not listening to anywhere near as much US sports talk radio as I used to or watching PTI/Sports Center, so I’m not up to date with the top players any more.

The discussion I saw said that a lot of the media coverage had focused on the finalists being small market teams with little general interest and suggested the broadcasters had shot themselves in the foot. There were also plenty of complaints about the number of stoppages towards the end of matches as a reason for people turning off.

Yep, the last couple of minutes of a basketball game is just about unwatchable

Meanwhile Milwaukee Villa are now 3-2 up. Game 6 at 2am our time on Tuesday Wednesday morning.

I known that it's being discussed in the main Owners thread, but just to tidy up this one.......

Milwaukee Villa are NBA Champions for the first time in 50 years

LeBron becomes the NBA's all time leading scorer

One of those 'I feel bloody old moments', because the hype over LeBron as a High School player 20 years ago was at the peak of my listening to US sports talk radio.

I think that was the same night as a player in another game scored 71 on his own.

Defense optional in the NBA at the moment

My late friend Red would have loved this incredible win by his almer mater, Fairly Dickinson University
